The total rental pick up and return process at the SAV airport needs to be reevaluated. I rented & prepaid a compact, fueled car online. My pick up was scheduled for 7 AM. When I arrived, there was nobody at the counter. (Their website said it opened at 7AM. ) A call to Payless customer service was not helpful. After 30 minutes of waiting, I learned that AVIS and Payless were part of the same company so I went to the AVIS counter and got my key. The car I had selected and paid for online was not available, so I was forced to upgrade for $10 per day. The car was clean, but the gas tank was less than full. There were no instructions provided on how to return the vehicle. I returned it to where I got it and brought my key inside because there was no attendant outside in the parking lot. After waiting in line, the counter clerk told me I had to drive the car around to a different lot. She said it would be easy. But it was not. She told me to just leave the keys on the dash and I'd be all set. I drove all around the airport to the lot indicated, and there was no parking sign for AVIS or Payless. The security guard suggested a place to park. I followed her instructions. The car was in perfect shape and the gas tank was completely full. I left the keys and prayed that the car would be safe. Later, when I got home, I saw a tag stapled to my receipt that perhaps should've been left on the dashboard when I turned in the car? It took 30 minutes for me to return my vehicle! The review is for the car that I received. I made reservations and paid for it in advance about a week before I arrived to the Savannah Georgia location. The location is along the baggage claim area with the rest of the car rentals. There was no one in Payless but they referred me to budget. Budget was able to look up my car rental and even gave me an upgrade at no charge. I was really happy. The guy at the counter was super unfriendly and cold, but he was working on January 1 and everyone else was closed. My concern was that no one walked out to the car to look it over for dings and scratches. There were a few so I want to make sure I don't get charged for it. I videoed the car myself with a few friends that I was with to make sure that I had note of it. I returned the car two weeks later, and no issues at all. It was easy. I'm really surprised at all the one star reviews because that was not my experience. Had I read those prior. I probably would not have rented a car from them. They were the best price with unlimited mileage, and super easy since it's at the airport. You pick up your luggage at the baggage claim and walk just a couple of feet to the car rental. When we complain they did not care and did not address, solve or even pretend interest in our situation. I was shocked to come on here to find such negative reviews after having a very positive experience with Payless and Maggie. When there was an issue with my partner's card, Maggie worked with us patiently to assess and try out all options before giving up on the rental. Further, she reviewed all available cars in order to get us a cheaper one (we had initially reserved with budget, but they couldn't help us- although, they were very nice as well). Short story long... I made reservations one week prior to my pick up date. I got to the Customer Service desk and gave my information, only for the gentleman to inform me that there were no cars available. In fact, he stated that there would be a four hour wait on any potential cars being returned. When I questioned the unsavory business practices of his employer, the gentleman begins to tell me that this establishment has operated in this manner since he has been an employee! First and foremost.... cute car for the weekend.... and that's the ONLY THING. They charged an EXTRA DAY FEE when we we literally at the airport the day before at 5am. So whoever made the dates at the desk put the wrong damn dates after confirming it with the renter I was with!!! An almost $400 charge FOR A WHOLE 48 HOURS WE WERENT IN SAVANNAH. Probably the worst customer service experience I have ever had in dealing with any company.. there is no way to catalog every difficulty I have had with them locally or at their National call center. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE WHATEVER YOU DO. A little bit about my experience: I had scheduled and prepaid for a rental car at the Savannah Georgia airport at 11:30am when my flight was supposed to land. Unfortunately, my flight that morning was cancelled and I was scheduled on the next available flight which would get me in at about 4:30 pm. According to my confirmation email, if I needed to make any changes to my reservation I should call the 1-800 number, which I did. I received at updated confirmation email with the new pickup time. When I arrived at the Savannah airport rental counter at 5pm, I was told they had no cars available, even though I had booked my vehicle in advance and they had a sign at the entrance to the line that said "cars available." The employee manning the kiosk asked why I hadn't called the Savannah location directly, an instruction not indicated on the confirmation email. I asked this employee what my options were, she said the only thing they would be able to provide was a refund. As that option would have left me stranded at the Savannah airport, I deemed this response unacceptable and asked to speak to the manager, who was not on premises but was called so I could speak to her the phone. According to Maggie, the manager, my only options were to wait until tomorrow to get a car or to get a refund. In my opinion, this is not an appropriate or helpful response to a customer. Here are some options that I suggested: 1) since cars will be available tomorrow, you can pay for my transportation from and back to the airport to pick it up the next day, 2) you can give me one of the cars you have that do not necessarily fall under the category of car we booked at no additional cost since it is your mistake that no cars in our category are available, 3) you can help get me get a car with one of the other agencies in the airport. The manager, Maggie, on the phone refused these options and said the only option was a refund and then said "I can't talk to you anymore about this because I am picking up my kids" and hung up the phone. In desperation, the employee at the desk tracked down an employee from National and begged her to help us. Before we went to the next counter, we asked to proceed with a refund of our Payless rental, which they couldn't do, even though it was THE ONLY OPTION offered, and told us to call the 1-800 number to process a refund. The employee from National, could not have been more helpful. Not only did she have cars available for us, she gave us almost the exact rate that we had from Payless AND upgraded the type of vehicle free of charge. The manager called me the next day and left me a message asking me to "do her a courtesy" by calling her back. I did, and when I spoke to her she said she was "very busy" and she would call me back in 20 minutes. I never received a call back. When looking at these two customer experiences, I couldn't help but notice the disparity. Is this just an issue at a specific franchise or is it a larger company wide policy issue? Save yourself the headache and just go with a company that may (or may not) be a little more expensive. read more

Don't ever book with Payless. I booked a VW Jetta or similar for a week while my car was in the body shop. Arrived at the counter at 12:05 to be told they had dropped my reservation. The only car available was double the price, even though the area was empty of travelers. I went on the website to check and rebooked a car, got a confirmation, and went back to the counter. The manager informed me that there is a 24 hour wait on Internet bookings, and would not be able to rent any car to me that day. I left their counter fuming about the lack of service. I have recorded audio of this Maggie person and her helper Bernard stating my confirmed reservation was not available for early pick up by a few hours. I was able to reach corporate and they also stated it was a lie and there was ongoing problems with this Maggie and Bernard. And to go get my car it was there and had been. I was told by Maggie to find another agency. I've never experienced such rude and unethical treatment from a business. Please don't let this happen to you. I booked a Chevy Impala or compatible and when I arrived was told the only car available was a Mazda 3...really????? Newsflash to Payless...A Mazda 3 is not even close to an Impala. I had little choice but to get a bigger car and when I complained to the counter person, all they offered were excuses - When I pointed out the obvious differences in the two cars, the representative agreed with me (what else could he do?) but said there was nothing he could do. I rented a car from Payless from January 17-18, 2015. The short story: DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS The long story: First issue that bothered me was that I was charged for a full tank of gas before I was even handed the keys to my car. I was only in Savannah for 25 hours and would be traveling to my hotel and the town area which was 20 minutes away. Not far at all. The lady working at the Payless counter told me that if I returned the car without paying for the tank of gas when I picked up the keys, I would be charged a higher rate for the full tank. National and Alamo have a 3rd option where you return the car with a full tank that you've fill it up yourself. Payless doesn't have this option. I was charged more for that tank of gas than the rental of the car itself. This issue bothered me the most because the lady didn't tell me that their 2nd option (where they charge me for the higher rate) is based on if I returned the car below empty and I would be charged by how much gas they needed to put into the car to get it back to full. Throughout my short stay the needle never dipped even slightly below full. Second issue is that I pre-paid for a "compact car." After being sodomized by the fuel charge I would never end up using, I walked to my car to see that it was an "economy car" (a white Toyota Yaris 2-door.) Payless' website even states their lowest level "economy car" is "Toyota Yaris or similar." Although the difference in price between a "compact" and "economy" is less than a dollar, I felt pissed at being bait and switched. I wanted a compact to provide more safety for me and my girlfriend in case of an accident. If Payless claims that our Yaris is the 2nd smallest car they rent then I hope the poor person who does choose "economy" is happy with their road-legal Razor scooter. In summary, you'll get a far better and more honest experience with Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, a taxi, bus or hitch a ride from a man driving a windowless van. read more

I had the worst experience in the Savannah Payless car rental location. Customer service was despicable and I was made to wait one hour in the airport only to be turned down because I was priced gouged with hidden fees that were not quoted in my original reservation. Left the airport at 1:30 packed up my dogs and headed down on I 95. Car broke down because I was given the junkiest beat up old rattle trap piece of crap car only to have to turn around on interstate 95 and trade out the car. I Was yelled at by customer service and now it's 3 PM in the afternoon when my reservation was for 11 AM. I will not be paying any more than the original amount quoted on my reservation. Payless doesn't deserve the one star! This has to be the WORST car rental company! I booked online and didn't realize the debit card policy; which is they run a credit check and hold an additional $200 on your card. I arrived in Savannah and the woman at the counter immediately told me that I was a 1/2 hour early and the car wasn't ready and was quite rude. I waited and at exactly 1PM she calls out my name to the only ones there which was me and my family as there was NO ONE Else waiting. She was rude again as she told me their awful policy. My sister offered to use her credit card and we were told no and that we couldn't start a new reservation. My sister asked about the policy and we were told that she wouldn't repeat it again and said she was canceling my reservation. She said there was no one else there or a supervisor there that I could speak with and she left the counter. We were left there with 2 children and no car. I called customer service and was told it would take 10 days to get a refund and there were no supervisors that I could talk to and then said they would try and find one and never came back on the line. I called back and was told that the call center was in MEXICO and they didn't have a Corporate office to call or supervisors. It has been almost a week and I called and there was never a request made for a refund and I was told that I canceled the reservation myself and would not be offered a refund due to their policy. I just received an email with my cancellation and another email with a ticket number to request a refund. Needless to say this is the WORST agency EVER. We rented a car from THRIFTY and were told that PAYLESS was their best customer because everyone ends up coming to them after trying to rent from PAYLESS. DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS!! Unfortunately I didn't read these reviews until the day of my rental. I called 30 minutes out from pick up and was informed that my cars were there and all ready for me. Yeah, that was a lie. No cars available, no empathy or apology at the desk. I was told to call the 1-800 number that assured me cars were available, they hung up on me when I told them what happened. I went back to the desk to ask what options I had and they said wait and see if someone dropped a car off later that night. At this point, it was already after 7 PM. I prepaid for the car online the day before and when I went to pick the car up, I was told that they would put a $500 hold on my account and charge me an extra $100 on my card because I was under 25. Reserved a mini van for 4/4/16-4/9/16 for $396. When we arrived early, they told us we had to wait until 6 pm or rate would change. We waited until 6, and then were told the ONE mini van they had was in for repair. We told them we reserved the van 2 months in advance for our golf vacation, and we needed the extra room. They said they could only give us a Ford escape. Because of their ineptness, we had to rent an additional car for $457 for the 5 days. I got to Payless and they said they didn't have cars unless I paid hundreds of dollars more and that Orbitz should not have confirmed. I had to rent from National at $364. My friend put the rental on her credit card because Payless would not use my debit card. I have never had this happen. Made my reservation over 1 month in advance - when I got to counter I was told that they did not have my requested size but I could pay more for the next size up. Turns out my car was sitting waiting the whole time. Despite locking in a rate with Expedia in advance, they informed me the rate would be higher since I was bringing it back 2 hours later in the day than the time I was picking it up. So they added that charge, then when I returned the car at the agreed-upon time, they charged me an additional penalty claiming that I was late for my reservation.
