I really want to give a good review, but I can't. I ordered progressive lenses for some frames I already owned. The price was $250, much better than the $450 I paid my optometrist last time. When the glasses arrived, one lens was in focus inches above the other one when I looked at a computer screen. I took them back and Felix replaced them. The second set of lenses was focused evenly, but after wearing them for a few weeks I was getting headaches, and constantly moving them up and down my nose to find a place that focused on what I was looking at. I was traveling in Asia, so I couldn't bring them back. I replaced the lenses while traveling, and the new lenses worked fine. I think the problem is in the shape of the progressive lens focal area. I won't go back to Payless Optical for progressive lenses. read more

I like these glasses very much and have worn them for years. I dropped into Payless Optical hoping that they could be saved. The arms were not repairable but, if we could find a good fit, replaceable! This had not even occurred to me. That's what Felix did. In ten minutes he replaced my broken frame arms with compatible arms from an old pair of reading glasses. They are as good as new now. I was quite happy with this service. Like my dad's corduroys, this place falls under the category of "unintentionally retro." They've learned that if it was in-style once, it'll come back around again if you wait long enough. The glasses here look like they've been on the shelves for about 30 years. They've got a bunch of Ray Bans, Persols, and other designer brands. I got some Charlie's Angels-type sunglasses after bargaining the price down a couple Hamiltons (that's how they roll. no price tags. bring your street-market A-game). They also tinted the lenses darker for free when I complained about people being able to see my eyes too clearly. It's not dirt cheap, like $20 or anything, but the frames are under $100 when they would probably cost way more in some "vintage" shop. I cannot testify to how they grind lenses (I go to City Optix for that). read more

Felix was incredibly patient with me. I walked in and told him what I was looking for. He picked out some round frames for me while explaining which pairs were flexible or more comfortable due to their material, but while I was trying the frames on, he asked me if I would like to see more styles. He took out a box of frames that weren't on display and I tried most of them on before I finally decided on one. Admittedly, I took a very long time trying on most of the frames as he displayed them on the counter for me, but he assured me that I could take my time trying them on. (I wanted frames that were comfortable and were flattering for my facial structures...) He was very knowledgeable about everything and explained to me that since I had such a high prescription, I would need the thinnest lenses available. He also asked me if I wanted a certain type of lenses (I'm sorry to say that I forgot the name of what it was called) but basically, for an additional fee, it would be better for my eyes whenever I use the computer or drive at night. In the end, I paid a very reasonable amount for the frames (it was much more reasonable than the prices that I have been charged in the past by other stores) and I was notified within one week that my glasses were ready. They were beautiful and comfortable. I was asked by a stranger where I purchased my pink glasses because apparently, they looked very "retro" and "vintage" which I'm not sure if they actually are, but they're certainly unique and most likely unavailable in most stores. She was surprised that they were my actual glasses because most people these days wear these kind of frames for fashion. I'll definitely be coming here in the future when I need new frames. This is my favorite shop to buy glasses in the city. My dog has a talent for finding my glasses and destroying them, no matter where I hide them, and I must have replaced 5 pairs over the course of a year. (He has an obsession!) Excellent selection of frames, courteous and rapid service. Additionally, excellent prices and they keep a record or your prescription on file, in case you forget to bring a copy. As someone who cannot see without her glasses, I am happy to be able to get a new pair in 30 mins that won't break the bank. Some frames require special lenses that cannot be made in the shop (they send those out), but they arrive within a week, which is much faster than my medical insurance provider, Kaiser (also half the cost). I also like that it is an easy location for me to access via MUNI (I take the 49 bus) and it takes me within a block of the shop. read more

Wonderful find. I had numerous sunglasses that needed adjusting and repairs. I was embarrassed to enter the shop with a bag full of expensive glasses that were useless.
