Cannot recommend Peace Vans company enough times over. We did the Olympic National Park Loop in their Mercedes Metris Van. The car was so clean / detailed that we thought it was on a maiden voyage. It was perfect for our family of 5 (though really ideal for 4) and drove like a mini-van / slept great (was warm and cozy) and had all the little things we needed to tool around ONP (mini-fridge, stove, cabinets) and fully stocked with all you need to camp (dishes/spices/ first aid kit, etc). The company is actually a really small core group of folks and amazing to work with (shout out to Jess and Sam!). They both rent and sell camper vans. They answered all my questions super quick, even setup a Zoom Q&A just for us and threw in a lot of extras for free! All super chill, no paperwork when I arrived or left. They just really want you to have a great time and want to share their love for camper vans and the outdoors with you. Their website was excellent resources and guide for traveling around ONP. Oh! And their private campsite in Kalaoch was amazing and one of our favorites (amazing views of the beach, semi-private beach experience). We rented one of their old VW vanagons for a week of camping on the Olympic Peninsula and had an absolute blast! I wasn't sure about renting a 30 year old car but man, it ran so well and was in perfect condition (all things considered!). The service was awesome - picking up and dropping off was super easy - and on night one when we realized the camp table was missing a leg, we contacted them and they said to just pick up a new one at a store the next day and they would refund us. All in all we had a great trip and can't wait to do it again someday! read more

Greatly overpriced work for a simple oil change, payed $87.00 for oil and oil filter I could have got on Amazon for $30.00 and another $66.00 for labor. Total $158.00 for a simple oil change. We rented a VW Vanagon for a week long road trip around the San Juan Islands and through the North Cascades National Park and had the BEST trip! Peace Vans was so easy to work with - excellent at communication before, during, and after our trip, offered trip tips and help finding campsites, flexible with early pick up and late drop off, you name it! The van had everything we could think of that we might need and more! The complimentary coffee was delicious. It was comfortable to ride and sleep in, very clean, everything in working order. Is it possible to have a six star review? We had a somewhat unique experience with these guys deserving of a review of that caliber. In general, the reservation process and email communication went fine - there were a few minor mixups along the way, but they were swiftly reconciled after I pointed them out via email (we changed our reservation dates and a few fees automatically applied, etc). A good primer for the overall vintage van experience - give yourself a bit of time to work things out, don't push it too hard, keep in touch with the staff and it will be great. We did a fall shoulder-season rental to take advantage of the slightly lower rates for a longer rental. We were casually considering a early 2000s Eurovan purchase, so specifically targeted a 2001 model on their rental roster. This was (cue ominous music) the only post-1999 Eurovan they had available, so we were glad to have the option. Due to no fault of their own, the trip went awry about halfway through. We had planned on a fairly long trip to Vancouver Island via the Southern Gulf Islands, not in miles driven, but geographically (multiple ferries, border crossing, etc), and the end of it would be pretty remote (west side of island), so when we had big mechanical issues we were *thankfully* still in cel phone range (with a minor international roaming fee). I won't go into the details, bc the important part is how immediately responsive they were to our situation from afar, via text, on a Sunday. They swiftly put us in touch with their emergency roadside service and after a bit (it was a sunday in rural canada, after all) a local character showed up to give us a hand. It turned out that it was the alternator, so we *just* made it down the hill from his shop to the local repair outfit in their network. Peace Vans said to make sure we were comfortable overnight (repair shop was closed till Monday) and they would cover any expenses. We stayed in town, and they later reimbursed us for the hotel, the airbnb rental we had elsewhere that we had to cancel, and the in town taxi from the dead van to the hotel - very generous! In the morning, I walked down to drop the keys off as the shop opened and they were already in touch w Peace Vans. We had a nice breakfast and waited for news, which initially seemed good (found a alternator option - vintage parts being a bit scarce out in the hinterlands). However, after we set sail again over the horizon there was a big thump and the engine started smoking (later learned the mechanics did not quite mount the serpentine belt correctly and it slipped off, it is apparently complicated). At this point we were in danger of our trip being a bit derailed, as it initially seemed like it might be a bigger deal. While we were waiting for the tow truck, we conferred and decided to see if we could bail on the trip and just go on in a rental car, as per Peace Van policy. We coordinated with the office and they were very generous with the situation, swiftly understood our instance and agreed. Two hours later we were heading west in a new rental car, and after some back and forth on return, the refund(s) were posted. The staff there confirmed that they were finding the Eurovans a bit...fragile...for bigger trips at this stage in their lifespan, and were contemplating just focusing on Vanagons. It is firmly off our future purchase list lol - but we are very impressed by the level of service, responsiveness, and decisiveness of Peace Vans in our sticky situation out in the wilds of Van Isle. We were able to rapidly change direction and have a great time out in Tofino, then drop the rental car in Victoria and passenger ferry back to SEA and home. In the end, it all ended up cancelling out on the balance sheet, we learned a lot, had a real adventure, met many friendly Canadien mechanic-types and had an impressive customer service experience with Peace Vans. Peace Vans helped bring my dream to life. In the early 90s I owned an old vw bus. Our adventures included travels throughout the West, from Tucson to Klamath Falls, from Vegas to San Francisco to Santa Fe and Telluride. We saw the Grateful Dead in many of those places, many times over. Also Neil Young, Taj Mahal, the Allman Brothers Band, and countless others. We journeyed to visit a beautiful park ranger; she was having none of us, not then, and although one day she would come around, that is a story for another Yelp review. But after a few years I had to head East. That old bus saw the direction we were driving and it refused to go, refused even to approach the shores of the Wabash river. Her injectors melted, not once but twice, and I sold her for nothing in Effingham Illinois to a used car salesman with a lot full of Fords. I've regretted it ever since. Now older and wiser, with a bit more spending money, but with a family and responsibilities, too, I put in place a plan to reclaim some of that past glory. The internet does strange things to a man, and, having invested a fair amount of time searching through blogs and craigslist ads and other such things (and sites like the one you are looking at now), I hatched a plan to buy a van. The immediate justification was a family vacation - me, the wife, three kids, the Tetons, Yellowstone. The big time. But the more important justification was deeper, less instrumental -- it was the call of the open road, a love of adventure, a desire for movement that expressed itself in dreams of seats set atop wheel wells and steering wheels so big you need to use your whole body to turn them, throwing your weight into the turn, power steering be damned. I spoke with people at most of the well-known VW shops, and received any number of recommendations. Of all the people I spoke with, it was my conversations with Harley, the owner of Peace Vans, that really stood out for me. He had sage advice, and warned me in no uncertain terms about the real costs of pursuing the dream. When a van looked too good in an ad, he reminded me that they all need something. He urged me to be sensible and have the prospective vehicle checked out. He served as a combination godfather and Sherpa for the purchase and for the plan. In the end I bought an '87 Weekender in Las Vegas and drove it 1000 miles to Seattle to have Peace Vans give it the treatment. June is Vanagon season in the American West, and although it is invisible to most drivers -- automotive muggles in beemers and subarus and hondas and the like -- if you hang out in Seattle or Portland or San Francisco you will see the vanagons emerge, road beasts waking from hibernation and circling the oases that keep this invisible ecosystem alive. Peace Vans has become one of the most important of these oases in recent years. As you approach Seattle or Santa Cruz, after hundreds of miles of seeing not even one other Vanagon, all of a sudden you begin to have more frequent encounters, and joyous recognition passes from front seat to front seat as both drivers, in unison, flash the secret signal they reserve only for others of their kind: the peace sign. My van spent two weeks at the shop, while I went back home to fetch my family for our big adventure. Harley went out of his way to carve out space for us in the busy June schedule. Most of what they did was work on suspension, brakes, the cooling system, the fuel hoses. These are the un-fancy things that are needed to get one of these vehicles in shape. We were all aware that passengers 1, 2 and 3 were my kids. Leave the upholstery and paint for the future, focus on the important stuff. I had spent a not inconsiderable amount on fixing up the van -- almost as much as the purchase price, in fact. The results were noticeable from the moment I drove it. Above all, I felt a sort of security, knowing that the van had been gone over from top to bottom and that most of the important issues had been addressed. In fact, while camping with my kids the first night, we realized that one or two things had come out a bit off. There had been a miscommunication about the need for a seatbelt in the rear-facing jump seat. We brought it back to Peace Vans on Monday morning and they took care of it, and did not charge me for the work. It was, in fact, not an inexpensive fix, and I was incredibly impressed. Later on that same trip, when I ran into a problem with a faulty oil cooler, I called Peace Vans to inquire. They called on their friends at the local shop to take care of me. Jeff and his crew are the first mechanics I've ever met who can not only work on my '86 vanagon and make her shinier than a brand new penny, but share the passion I feel for VWs. I know a lot about VWs but next to nothing regarding the mechanics--a potentially hazardous situation for such a high maintenance vehicle! (And they don't make me feel stupid for being a girl who doesn't know how to work on her car) :) After having her freshly painted and worked on some issues, (fuel lines, new tires, replace windshield, etc) we drove away happily feeling as though we had a brand new car. A couple of months later I was stuck in North Bend with a starter motor problem, called them up and one of the guys talked me through getting her going again. I highly recommend Peace Vans to anyone who really cares about their Vanagon. (Which is everyone!) I'm a total van newbie. I bought a passenger Vanagon to convert it on the cheap into a high top Westie. The original plan was to put a subie engine in right away but money didn't allow so we took her to Peace Vans to get her running. We got the detailed inspection write up in addition to the engine work. Jeff has been great, sharing information and selling hard to find parts: propane tank, Westie cabinets and bed, and the coveted front seat swivels. I've spent enough time on the Samba by now to know what parts cost, where common pitfalls are and what happens from poor workmanship. Corey and Harley are seriously incredible. 5 stars is 100% deserved. My van had an incredibly bad electrical fire and they helped work through insurance, they rebuilt my whole dashboard, fixed the power windows and fully detailed the car. I walked out super satisfied, drove the van down to San Francisco, when I found a few problems with the stereo and the camper equipment. Corey made sure everything was taken care of to fix these things, including sending me a new stereo, which was faulty, even though it wasn't their fault. Peace vans is the most memorable way to go camping! They have thought of everything. They provide almost everything. We only had to pack food, clothing, and sleeping gear. They even provide a number you can use if you have questions while on the road. The staff was quick to respond when we needed help navigating to a different camp site when the one we booked was less than desirable. My kids couldn't love Peace Vans more. Update. After the owner Harley promised two days ago in person that he would replace my battery cover and emailed the same day that he would give me one out of his rentals (and that he would definitely get in touch within a day), he did none of those things. This morning I noticed there was a bolt missing from my radiator...I drove to Peace Vans to get it put back in.( Peace Vans had to take this out to do the work they did for me...a simple error). Harley was there, admitted he hadn't bothered to do anything to replace my battery cover, and hadn't bothered to get one off his rental. I was finally angry enough to demand an apology for stealing parts off my van intentionally(my curtain rings, which he installed in his rental after stealing them) after he trotted out the mechanic who worked on my heater core replacement to try to tell me I had never had a battery cover. I pointed out the day I brought it in that I had put coolant in and rested the coolant cap on that cover literally moments before putting my van in their hands. (Needless to say this lie did not go over well with me.) Harley eventually admitted to stealing. "Yes I did steal your curtain rings to put in our rental. I shouldn't have done it. I admit it." He also told me he never would have stolen from me and kept my van after it was fixed (causing me to miss half a family reunion) to use for parts if he had known I was a cancer patient waiting to visit my family. (?!) He admitted he did this to get his rental van on the road so he could have more money coming in, and that's why my van was still sitting in the shop a week after it was fixed. Run from this shop unless you don't mind the owner stealing whatever parts he needs and thinks you won't miss off your vehicle. It was plain as day this was business as usual for Harley and the only thing he seemed to be sorry about was getting caught. Oh, and before I left this morning he did say he would do whatever he had to do to make it right, that he believed they did lose (or steal? We'll never know) my battery cover, and that he would get on the phone immediately to make a replacement happen and drive it to my house when he gets one. I will believe it when it happens and update if it does. These are basically the same words he said to me three days ago. This morning at the shop he admitted he had done none of the things he promised three days ago and had instead just decided to go home from work early that day. All this from a man who told me how much he cared about what cancer patients go through, as his wife was a cancer nurse. (He was the one who brought up my cancer to try to manipulate me into thinking he was a caring guy, and not an actual thief.) Just a guy who made a "bad judgement call". "Can't you see my humanity Carol?" was another good quote from Harley as he lied to me on my trip in to retrieve the curtain rings he stole. Wow. update 6/14 I received an email from Harley this morning stating that he had seen my (honest and accurate) reviews here and on google reviews. My review on google has disappeared. My advice: if you had a van in the shop 6/10 - 6/13 you may have curtain rings missing from your van. I believe they have been given to me to replace the ones Harley stole from my van. I saw them running around from van to van out back before finally throwing a handful of different colored curtain rings in my hand to replace the ones Harley stole.Thanks to Yelp and Google! After four trips to the shop to retrieve my missing parts I may manage to get them all back. Harley made it clear he cared enough about my experience going public to finally try to do what he should have weeks ago. Here's the google review he had removed: 'I have been a three time customer at Peace Vans. I have spent 3k $ and will never use them again after the owner Harley admitted to me today that he stole parts off my van to use in his rental van. "I admit it. I did steal your curtain rings for the rental, Carol. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done it." No kidding. He even tried to make himself seem better by telling me he would never have stolen my van parts and held onto my van after it was fixed if he knew I had cancer and was trying to get to a reunion. I guess in Harley's mind that is where you draw the line. Stealing from and lying to a healthy client is okay, I guess. He told me he wasn't really a thief, just someone who made a "bad judgement call". A bad judgement call is when the umpire calls a ball a strike. Vanagon owners are lucky to have a shop like Peace Vans in the Seattle area. This shop has cool style, friendly people, and quality service that keeps my van on the road to freedom. Another rare aspect is that they work on diesel Vanagons, which is hard to find (thanks Nick). Peace Vans recently fixed my front end and walked me through the major repairs that had been bothering my van for over a year. They also were able to locate several issues in my electrical system and explain to me what was going on. They are very straight forward and work with me on getting my 1.6l diesel up-to-speed. I would also use this shop to customize my van as you can see the quality projects that they work on. They understand the full potential of VW buses and vans and their attention to detail really shines. Maybe someday they will help me upgrade my engine to a 1.9l turbo diesel. It was very clear to me, that Jeff and the PeaceVans crew really really care about your van. They have gone way out of their way to do the right thing instead of the quick approach. I am a newbie when it comes to mechanics, however I do considerable research and Jeff was always in line with all the research. He was open and honest with his opinions, was opened to my opinions and was practical about the decisions we landed on. I swapped the Subi engine elsewhere and Jeff was able to clean up some potentially dangerous set ups from the other garage. Jeff went way out of his way to ensure I paid the right price for parts, offered up some of his parts, resold some of my parts, etc. etc. I felt he always acted as if he was working on his own van. We did a major overhaul for my van. I felt the price was fair, and I have a very stable van that I've been enjoy the h*ll out of for over 6 months! read more

Jeff, Nick, Joe, and Corey at Peace Vans do fantastic work, but it's their community/customer-first philosophy that really sets them apart . We have a 1990 Westy and take our van to them for services and tune-ups. They found fewer "problems" than the other guys, and have kept our van running great. They've been super at communicating with us every step of the way. When our van mysteriously wouldn't start after a weekend trip to the yakima canyon, I brought it in to Peace Vans. Joe spent the better part of a day and a half diagnosing and rechecking the electrical system finally isolating and fixing the problem. When I arrived to pick up the van Jeff told me how much time they'd spent and my heart sank--no way could I afford that bill. Jeff and I talked it through and arrived at a price that worked for my wallet and that was fair to us and the shop. Although he took a financial loss on the job, we both felt good about the outcome because I was happy, the van was working, and the value of Joe's good work was highly appreciated. Kind of old fashioned, but a good way of doing business. Being a vanagon owner, it's a fact of life that a good relationship with a shop and the vw community is a must; these babies take care and feeding. I'm glad that we found Peace Vans! What a fantastic experience! I had such a great time in the van I rented. Everything worked perfectly and the van was super clean. James and Harley set us up beautifully and were more than willing to share a number of inside tips on where to go as we drove around the peninsula. The van was way more comfortable than I expected. Nights were easy to set up for and very cozy in our traveling abode. I have to Say, James was extremely helpful whenever I had a question. I would text him and he would get back to me promptly. First let me just say , in nearly 30 years of dealing with the auto related industry my experience with peace vans was by far the most dis-tastful ... I wouldn't even have bothered wasting my time here on yelp , except Jeff the owner reciently wrote me to request I not leave negative feedback ... This coming after he noticing the day prior I was emailed a free t-shirt for positive yelp comment offer ... Positive comments for peace vans - I don't have .. In fact I'm jammed packed with WARNINGS .. and I'm not just spewing without merit .. I have documents, pictures and witnesses that share my concern ... I responded to a Craigslist post by peace vans ... My '87 vanagon was in need of a engine , and peace vans not only had what I needed, but wanted my business and was going to do everything possible to make my experience cost efficient , trouble free and most of all quality - becouse that's the only way peace vans does things. As you might have guessed my experience was zero for three .. let me just say that yes, Jeff had great communication and I have kept them all via email, no he said - she said , and would happly share for those looking not to be miss-led or taken. This wasn't my first car care experience rodeo , and won't be my last ... But rest asure its my LAST with peace vans. I was told one price in writing - and it was increased almost $1k , my Vanagon incurred body damage at their hands - they admitted yet took no responsibility, again in writting , I took delivery and in 20 miles my vanagon engine died coming off freeway, would not hold a idle and my father who took me up to get my van that was following me pointed out a oil leak ... This all within 30 minutes of repair .. Add another 100 miles and the main coolant hose installed busted on freeway forcing roadside repair. Later that same night with my family in Van after midnight the newly installed shift linkage feel apart and left us stranded stuck in 4th gear ... Call in towing.... Jeff's response is I'm nickle and dimeing him , after I refused to cover his cost overages ... I don't how you the reader do business .. but if I promise to do job "a" for $500 at the most .... I don't care what it takes to complete job "a" , if I said $500 , then its not a penny more .. In frustration , and after replacing the shifting components, new hoses, waiding past countless wire ties that were holding what should have been mounts , sobering why the p/s wasn't installed ? Where did the a/c go? And every time I drove addition memories of "lack of peace of mind" existed. I went so far as to show several "v-dub" lifers the job , and all could not believe the hack job. Long story short, I looked into court action and had a very winable case, if I wanted to progress ... But costly to pursue, so with utter lack of faith in the drivetrain conversion performed , in less than a month from paying over $2k to peace vans, I took a loss and sold my Vanagon of over 4 yrs. I'm not here to trash or make false claims. If your looking to have your be serviced or repaired I'm afraid this operation is not at all getting a recommendation from me. Jeff and his crew at Peace Vans have performed various tasks for me on my 91 Westy. Jeff truley cares about doing the job right which is not always an easy task, especially on these vehicles. He has alot of experience and does a good job in explaining and standing behind any maintanence or repair he or his guys perform. I would take my van there any time and wouldn't hesitate recomending them to another vanagon owner. These vehicles are not cheap to repair and those that own them and love them understand that. I wish I'd found these guys when I first got my Eurovan five years ago. I could have saved A LOT of cross-town trips to the dealer and I'm guessing a lot of $$$ too. I just had a minor issue addressed and will be taking it back for some major PM work before we take a longer road trip later this summer.
