The classes range from restorative and gentle to more physically challenging- but most of the instructors use their intuitive sense to do what is needed at the time. So be open to a variety and be open to working on your mat if you are in a class that is different from your expectation. That's part of opening yourself up for positive change and growth. I began my practice in the Bikram studio down the road, which I won't knock because I think that the year that I spent in that heat allowed me to develop some flexibility, but after about a year I got really tired of the rhetoric and the same sequence every time. So, I ventured down the street to the Mindful Turtle and I found my yoga home. Mindful Turtle offers a variety of classes with some really great instructors. Overall, the studio has a large ashtanga influence, but they also offer vinyasa, hatha, kripalu, and evening yoga. The teachers are really great. Each teacher that I practice with has gotten to know me and my practice and pushes me to reach new places. They also have a great ability to have fun with the practice and to incorporate the mental piece of yoga. The studio owner, Danielle, is a true yogi. She embodies everything that you think yoga should be and has supported the growth of this amazing little yoga community in Stony Brook. You will quickly see the community if you come to the Mindful Turtle. The teachers and students all look forward to laying their mats down next to one another and sharing their energy. From beginning and beyond. Her guidance, support along with the teachings of not just physical yoga, but for your spiritual sense is incredible. She is who you want to learn from if you are looking to create peace inside & strength on the outside. Her classes are always new & fresh. I feel her prices are reasonable, especially if you just want to try it out & not commit to a membership. I've been at it for 5 months now, and I'm so glad I gave it a try.

I have been to a number of yoga studios and continue to practice at several (including Bearfoot)…read moredepending on time, availability and instructor. I have only taken classes with Gina so far, so I have a limited amount of experience with the studio's offerings, but from what I have seen I can say that Bearfoot offers solid classes for beginner and intermediate yogis. Gina's classes are slow and controlled with good explanations of alignment and balance. She strongly encourages the use of props in the correct manner - level 1 and 2 classes include bolsters, blankets and blocks. Do not expect to get overheated and sweat it out at Bearfoot - temperatures are kept at the comfortable level (something I like) and classes are set at a slower pace than most other vinyasa practices (something I like sometimes). The other thing you get with Gina's practices is a longish talk regarding her personal insights, some stuff about astrology, shamanism, and the various spiritual aspects of yoga. The latter stuff is certainly not my cup of tea, but you may feel differently - her classes are full, so apparently many people do!

It's a wonderful opportunity for them to decompress and Dave does an incredible job of connecting and getting to know each individual. There are times his entire room is filled to the max capacity. When our individuals first started doing yoga they weren't able to concentrate and now they are finding their centers for two minutes which require total silence. Dave does a great job of explaining each pose to the individuals. Dave accepts and fully engages with our individuals and the individuals reciprocate with his kind heart and wonderful sense of humor.
