I don't know how Peapod gets reviews less than four stars. I have no.vested interest in this company except I continued to be amazed at the value we receive from their service. Even if you're on a tight budget you will surprised at how cost effective your delivery can be. One strong point of Peapod's service is your ability to sit down for a few seconds, a few hours or even a few days to order from Peapod. It takes the pressure off the "did I get everything on my list?" Did I mention the price? Okay they're not giving away stuff, but this Tiramisu was four lousy dollars...for two. That's supermarket prices and this Tiramisu was "mialior". (good!) How can tell you a really good Tiramisu? The taste...lady fingers drenched in rum? Yes, but not too heavy. If you hold your fork above your Tiramisu, prongs down, and let your fork gently drop without pushing it too much you have the right consistency. Peapod's partner in this awesome Tiramisu is none other than Palermo's Bakery in Norridge,IL. We just got Buona Beef delivered by Peapod this morning. Believe it or not I have never been to a Buona Beef primarily because Al's and Portillo's are so good there just wasn't room in my head...nuff said. Since, I am trying Buona Beef's shipped product, like a good yelper I will go to a local Buona Beef and try them. I would be remiss if I judged Buona Beef just on frozen foods. However, I expect it to be good because Peapod has evidently made a commitment to quality foods not just service. Oh, did I.mention that Peapod is locally owned? There you go...another reason to support your Chicago area businesses, as is Palermo's and Buono. Hmmm...something wonderful is happening...here. Wait...I just checked. One of the earliest internet start-ups, Peapod came into being in the Chicago area in 1989 as a grocery delivery service. It has survived challenges from much better financed competitors (see WebVan debacle), and is presently held by the Dutch grocery company Royal Ahold. They are active in about a dozen cities and deliver groceries from their owned stores as well as warehouse operations. A more recent innovation is the company does the shopping only for you, and customers pick up their order at neighborhood centers. Delivery fees max out at about $10, are less depending on the size of the order. The company has a very deep inventory of brands, including a house brand, and sell everything a modern brick and mortar grocery does, including meat, fish, produce, boxed goods, deli, pet food, beverages (including alcohol), and prepared meals. A separate category includes some hardware, household and office supplies. Prices are close enough to regular stores so as to not hurt, and like your weekly grocery shopping, if you actually "shop" the Peapod website, you can save some money when you need to. If there's a drawback to the current service, it is that the minimum order is $60; one of the great services in the space was Pink Dot, in Los Angeles, from which you could order something as small as a single bag of chips, and they were working 24/7. Pink Dot has survived, but not grown. The Peapod website is easy to navigate, and like most web enterprises these days, it's intuitive, learns your preferences quickly, and has features like saved shopping lists. You can receive delivery very quickly (at worst, by noon the next day), and there are delivery windows which offer discounts on the fee. You can specify whether or not you will be home for the delivery, and in that instance, the company packs perishables into cooler type containers. I've used services like this in the past, Safeway had one on the West Coast for quite awhile, and I never had an error with them. You'll receive a text prior to arrival, you can pick a two hour window. If you're on hand for delivery, the driver unpacks bags (separated by department) from sturdy cardboard boxes, and perishables from foam coolers within boxes. The driver doesn't put your groceries away, but he does carry them inside if you wish. Deli meats are available in 1/2 pound increments, sliced to your specifications, and delivered in zip-locs. I've been peapoding since they opened. My family has mocked me for years until recently when some of them needed to go grocery shopping and were too tired and I placed the order on peapod instead. I made a believer out of em - right down to the fact that they were able to get wine and beer of their liking delivered the following morning! Excellent! No more mocking from the family! If you are a city dweller, don't have a car, or have a car and hate to deal with weather conditions, traffic and parking, peapod is definitely the way to go. They usually pick excellent produce and everything is packed carefully and delivered to your kitchen counter. If you can't be home, or just don't feel like being sociable, you can pick unattended delivery and your groceries will be packed in coolers and fresh for you for up to 2 hours after your delivery window. And, if you get stuck in a snow storm on the way home from work and are going to miss your delivery window, you can call them and as long as there is a place for them to leave them (I imagine the sidewalk wouldn't be good) they will do so without a problem. The slight problems with Peapod: As Stacey D said, you can place things in your cart and keep on shopping for days. I have started shopping, gone back, started again, etc. and then forgotten to delete the items I no longer needed or wanted before the change cutoff time (8pm for next morning delivery and midnight for next evening delivery) and ended up with 8 five pound bags of flour (I was experimenting with different breads and pastries) and 4 cases of iced tea because I was putting the sale items in my cart while deciding which ones to get and forgot to go back before cutoff. BUT, I was able to call and tell them, and they said I could give the driver back whatever I didn't want, and I wouldn't be charged. And if you have a problem with anything, call and 4 out of 5 of the customer service reps will credit you back for the items or offer to have the items redelivered without question. Every once in a while you get someone snarky who makes you feel like you're stealing, but usually the reps are very pleasant and accomodating. And if you go to use peapod, make sure to do a search to get the $20 for new customers. Happy indoor shopping, and always remember to make those final changes before cutoff time or you may end up with a week's worth of cravings!! Jooooyyyy! Some people pamper themselves at the spa, I feel all refreshed and rejuvinated when two hunky men shop for/deliver my groceries. I used Peapod years ago, usually when getting ready for a party, but it's left my radar since. We got a $20 free groceries offer as part of the slew of 'welcome to the neighborhood' crap since moving. So yeah, worth another shot. They offer a pretty wide selection of brands and types of food, including kosher and organic. The delivery dudes were super cordial and just within the delivery range. One item substituted for something nearly identical, one out of stock thing that I didn't really care about, one mistake (i.e., different brand than I ordered/not listed under substitutions - who cares). They gave me an extra red bell pepper, a few extra limes and sweetcorn for free, I think unintentionally. Pros: produce is awesome, no doing the screaming brats at the store thing, no driving, saves a little time (it took a half hour to order online). Reliable drivers. Food kept in coolers while in transport. They take coupons. Accurate. Did I mention the hunky guys hauling my shit in the house as if I were some affluent broad? Cons: prices for some items are steep. read more

A twisted way to save money on groceries. Yes, you pay for the delivery (they usually have coupons) and yes the groceries cost more. But they have a little total that gets updated each time you add something to your cart! Imagine that at the grocery store! You wouldn't be tossing so much stuff in there. Besides that, their stuff is ok. I got some green bananas when I specifically stated yellow and they were out of the Dove bars I wanted. The delivery times vary and it can be tricky getting the time that you want if you wait too long to order. All in all, I would recommend it. It's a great feeling to have your groceries brought right into your house! read more

I disagree with the other reviewer who said that you don't toss as much random stuff in your cart when using peapod vs. a traditional grocery store. You can update your cart until the day before delivery. Since they don't schedule your delivery for 2 days or so, there's plenty of time to think of more things that sound good when you're hungry. I can plan to run to Jewel only after I've eaten, so nothing sounds good, but in 24 hours, I'm sure to get hungry and want to add Totino's pizza rolls to my order. 20 Totino's impulse adds later, I'm dangerously close to exceeding freezer capacity. (On the flip side, I suppose I could get home and realize I never ate any of my previous late-adds and delete them, or confirm that I already have 10 cans of chicken stock.) But it's too convenient to make excuses. I love it. I can make my order at work as I think of things, click away happily as I browse cooking blogs for recipes, and have someone bring it to me. Like take out, except I do the food prep. (If only I could hire someone to clean the dishes.) $20 on your first purchase is awesome. There are always other coupons online, like free delivery and such. And their prices are reasonable, comparable to other stores. I find the produce to be outstanding, good job produce pickers! One thing I don't like is that deli meat is pre-weighed, so you have to order in half-pound increments. (I can't eat half a pound of salami, I like a slice here and there.) Be aware - they have recently implemented delivery cancellation fees and we were just charged FIFTY DOLLARS due to a cancellation (which was within our time of delivery window!). After several years of being a loyal customer, and now they want to charge us a cancellation fee, which I'd be fine with, but FIFTY FOLLARS!! Outrageous! NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

The real reason I'm writing this is in hopes that someone in the company (that can make a change) actually sees it. Neither Customer Service nor driver dispatch really cared enough to try to make it right- they just wanted to get me off the phone and on to their next phone call. This is my second attempt at ordering from Peapod. I almost exclusively order through FD when I need groceries delivered, but I got a follow up coupon in the mail, so I thought what the heck. Here's the explanation for my *1 Star Rating* - My first order with Peapod arrived late (with no phone calls from a dispatcher, even though I got the email confirmation explaining it would arrive during the window I specified). This order arrived with items missing (no explanation from the driver). When I called Customer Service I was informed that the items were out of stock! One, it was in stock according to your website when I placed the order, and two, if you prepared the order and the items were unavailable, don't you think you should let your 'valued customer' know before you show up to their doorstep sans items?!? Terrible experience. - My current order had even more issues! The delivery window was 7am-9am EST. I got a call at 7:45am by an extremely rude thing named Priscilla. In THE most rude tone (as if it's NOT her job to call customers) she advised me that my delivery was instead going to be from 12pm-2pm EST. I advised her this was going to cause issues as I ordered the food early for a specific reason. This thing didn't even make an attempt to apologize! She advised that everything was delayed due to weather and would offer no other details. When I asked for employee info so I could identify her in later reports, she hung up on me! I promptly called Customer Service (spoke with a very nice man named Gary) who gave me further details as to the delay and even offered to take some money off the order. TL;DR If you want your order to arrive fresh, complete, on time, and with none of the issues stated above, order from FD. Peapod seriously needs to step it up. read more

I've used Peapod several times now and I have absolutely no complaints. Their drivers are wonderful -. I've needed extra help bring my groceries into the kitchen after having surgery and they were most accommodating. Also their customer service seems to be excellent. Any problem that you have with A food item they will refund your money without question. Really like the feature where they will notify you when your delivery is up next. Worth trying especially if you are in a situation where who are housebound or strapped for time! read more

Agree with other poster - I was just charged $50. We were home and the driver either didn't knock loud enough or know how to ring a doorbell. I called their customer service - waited on hold for 10 minutes, then waited 30 minutes for them to call me back. When they did call me back they told me that the route had ended and I was charge $50 for this. I told them that I was home the entire time - they said they would pull up the GPS to show that there were there. I have used peapod for years but will no longer be using their service. I'm giving 2.5 stars. I ordered from peapod for the very first time and got my delivery today. I decided based on the cons these are deal breakers for me so until something improves I will continue shopping at aldi and Mariano's for my groceries. Pros: surprisingly about the same price I pay for weekly groceries at my fav stores. For hubby and I we spend just under $100 per week, we buy lots of produce, shop generics whenever available and cook most of our meals. -convenience of shopping from your couch and staying out of the cold. -fee is reasonable and varies depending on how much u spend. Think we paid about 7 bucks. -produce was as fresh as Mariano's. Cons: My complaint is that they did not have enough delivery times available so prepare to order your groceries at least 48 hrs in advance preferably 72 hrs in advance. -What really pisses me off is they didn't seem to have a handful of the stuff I wanted in stock so I had to substitute with another brand or bought a bigger or smaller size of something. The stuff I am referring to is basic food like hot dog buns! Who runs out of hot dog buns?!don't have that problem at Mariano's! Also most of the tortillas were out of stock but there was 1 brand that said it was still in stock so I ordered it. They forgot it so I called customer service and their response was "sorry we didn't know until we put the order together that it was out of stock." So WHY aren't their computers updated to notify me of this?! I could have bought another brand of tortillas. It didn't say that it was out of stock online. I wish Mariano's would deliver groceries, they never have stuff out of stock. Now I will have to go out and brave the cold to buy tortillas for the enchiladas I was going to make for dinner. So yeah, ordering from peapod defeats the purpose of avoiding going outside since I will end up having to do this anyway. -other cons - unlike the grocery store it's hard to visualize online how big 10 ounces really is. I'm a vegetarian transitioning into veganism and I juice. That being said, I go through aaaa lot produce. I live by a lot of grocery stores but the quality has gone down. I used to go to Meijer a lot but their produce has been lacking quality lately. I started going to Jewel more but same thing. I hate paying whole-foods/ Standard Market prices because they do cost more. I also just hate having to go into whole foods. My parents have used Peapod in the past and told me the quality of fresh produce was very high. I have to agree, I order a variety of things. I was also surprised at the amount of Vegan/ Vegetarian options. I've ordered four times in the past few months and each time I'm extremely satisfied. The drivers are always in time. I usually have them bring the food only into the front hallway, but they do offer to carry it all the way to kitchen. read more

Just got my first delivery from Peapod. I had scheduled delivery between 8&10 am on Fri May 27th, but got a call, an email & a text msg by 7am saying there was a problem & my delivery would be up to 2 hours late. It arrived at 11:35. It didnt really matter to me, Ive got a broken ankle so I wasnt going anywhere. The driver was very pleasant and apologized for being late. I got a text when he left the delivery before me saying he was in the neighborhood & I was next, which was nice. I live in a raised ranch and he brought everything upstairs to the kitchen. I had arranged for a neighbor to bring it all upstairs for me, it never occured to me he'd bring them all the way to the kitchen. The selection of items and brands is very limited & some prices little higher than what Im used to, but in a pinch, this was great. Will continue to use them when I need to. read more

Peapod might be good at delivering food to customers but they are horrible with their employees. I know several people who work for the company and none of them have anything good to say about it. Peapod does not care about their employees health, needs, or their safety. They have a regulation book yet they don't follow it. I, myself use to work for this company and needles to say the team leads were rude, would tell me I couldn't use the restroom unless I was on break. Peapod is always late or never pay over time that is worked for. I don't know anyone who wakes up happy to go work at this place. read more

I use them to order my disabled siblings groceries when I don't have time to shop myself. The service from the driver was amazing. My brother tried helping him but he insisted that he has everything covered and took the time to walk everything INSIDE and not just out by the security door. I have used Peapod for over three years and had been happy with them, but the last 2 months have seen many problems. 1. Out of date food and meat that is out of date on the day of delivery. 2. Change of sale dates without letting you know. I put sale items in my basket like bacon at $3.99 a pound at checkout the bacon was $7.99 a pound. 3. Potatoes with eyes on all of them which I ended throwing out. I have called many times about issues and have gotten to the point where I no longer call. It does not make a difference. read more

We just started using Peapod a few weeks ago. First delivery was great - on time, all items accounted for, friendly delivery person. The last 3 weeks the delivery has been at least an hour late (this week 2 hours late). Food items and delivery staff have still been good but maybe Peapod should increase the number of drivers if timely delivery is an issue every weekend. We also seem to be near the end of their route, making the 8am - 10am delivery window closer to 11am or 12pm depending on the length of the delay. Not sure we'll continue unless we start to see more timely delivery over the next couple weeks. read more

I just received my first order and was a little worried about letting a stranger pick my produce for me but they did a great job!!! the produce is fantastic and I didn't have to spend the time poking through the cast offs at the grocery store late at night! It was easy to shop although if you have specific brands and products that you like you may not find them on this site. Most prices were comparable to Dominicks and the sale prices were definitely similar to what I am used to paying and, in some cases, better! read more

Disappointed. Used peapod two years ago and never an issue. Now two deliveries in, confirms order then doesn't deliver because out of stock. Both times essentials: milk and no notification so I could run out and get it(which defeats the purpose). Customer service aware of issue but does not know when app will be able to text you issues. We are done here. I was a Peapod cheerleader for years and over time their service (in the city) has gone way downhill. I am not sure what changed but here is my recent experience: On a Friday I was assigned a 5-7 time window. After sitting around for an hour and half, I received a call stating my driver was running late and had an ETA of 8:30. I think three and half hours is plenty of time to make a delivery. This was also the last of several instances when, despite a two hour window, the delivery was still late. I also find it weird that once you are into your two hour time frame, they can't give a text or any kind of update to indicate where in the queue your order is or the driver's status? C'mon Peapod, with the miracle of GPS this should be a no-brainer. It is disappointing that after so many years of great service Peapod has really gone downhill. read more

Do NOT order from here. The food is absolutely gross and this is coming from an employee. They don't get fresh food in often and when they do it sits in the warm part of the warehouse until it can fit into the cold section. By that time it's gross and moldy and all they do is pick out the mold and put it back on the shelf! A lot of their food comes off shelfs all dusty and out of boxes where there are dead bugs and even mice. None of the supervisors care about the quality and one of the supervisors especially is rude, degrading, racist, and uncaring. Worst company to ever work for or order from. read more
