First time here and I thought it was going to be just one studio I discovered that this building is huge with many other showrooms. We were there for a dance class with Dance Divas ,the session was very fun. Clean bathrooms in several locations on the floor. While walking around I saw studios with musical instruments (piano etc) so I think they offer all types of classes. Friendly staff. Must showb ID to enter building . read more

Interesting building with lots of artists, dancers, actors, etc. Seems like space is rented for various classes in the building. I took a Salsa class here since I was in the area and read up on one of the dance companies. The receptionist was very friendly and the group was small and intimate. My review is only about my one, limited experience with one instructor, one dance class and a small room with mirrors and no windows. In spite of that, it was comfortable. I'd prefer a room with windows but it was a cool experience nonetheless. I'd be interested in checking out other instructors/dance companies in the building to get a more varied experience. As soon as you arrive on the 12th floor, you'll notice two kids managing a candy booth that sells snacks and drinks. That is all they do. Don't try to ask for information, you'll be dissappointed. Becuase this space (multiple rooms) is rented out to different companies for dance/ rehearsal/ meeting space they are ignorant to their details. Check out the two TV screens if you need to find out which room your vendor is hosting the event. As for the rooms themselves, if you're looking for a well ventilated and clean space you will find a dusty room that needs a bit of TLC. After months of hounding from my friend about going to Zumba classes, I finally gave into her whims and let her show me the way. The studio is located on the 12th floor and also has classes on the fourth floor. Our Zumba class was on the fourth floor. The room was a nice size with mirrors. Our instructor was friendly and welcoming. All the students were really nice. it was easy to enjoy yourself. And although Zumba didn't kick my ass like Bikram, it was still a good workout and I broke out a sweat. I also really like that each song has a routine and you feel like you are learning dance moves. Unfortunately, I have no coordination. One of my all-time favorite songs, "Suavamente," has a great routine and really gets you to work the hip action! I will definitely come back for more classes. Zumba was fun and a nice change-up to Bikram and running. My only gripe is that they don't have showers or water fountains. They also offer other dance classes, including salsa and hip hop. I want to try them out and hopefully with some practice, I can try out my new moves on the dance floor! read more

I've only had the pleasure of singing and practicing in church, my bedroom with friends, or the shower. Not a professional Broadway singer but I can hold a note or 4. However, here the professionals will put you in your place with their side eye...as if they know you're a complete amateur. The dancers are the same but if they checked my background I feel they would give me a little love. Anywho, the rehearsal rooms are mirrored, may come with a piano and a few chairs. The rooms do tend to get a bit warm the more bodies added so be ready to crack a window open. I would have liked to see art among the directions for rehearsal rooms but that may be asking for to much. Rehearsal spot is what it is and serves just that purpose. read more

I have been coming to Pearl Studios twice a week for the past three months for fitness classes. The classes were excellent, but my experience at Pearl was anything but. The rooms themselves are very dirty. Dust balls line the room and collect in the corners. The floors are covered in dirt. Often times we would do a floor exercise and I would have black streaks on my back and arms from the filth on the floor. Also, the rooms are often freezing cold, which is not ideal for dance/fitness training. There are vents in the rooms, but oftentimes they are unreachable or they do not close. The bathrooms and changing facilities are disgusting. There are two bathrooms on the fourth floor of studios. Most of the time, 90% of the toilets are clogged and unusable, and several of the stall doors do not lock. Paper towels and toilet paper are also strewn about the floors of the bathroom. If I just need to change my shirt, there is no where convenient to do this. There is one pint-sized "dressing room" hidden down the hallway, but there is no lock and incredibly poor lighting. But above all else, my biggest complaint with this place is the staff. With the exception of Jeremy (the only reasonable employee I have encountered), everyone else who I have spoken with at Pearl is on a huge power trip. The employees are some of the rudest, most disrespectful people I have ever met in my life. Nicole (staff member at Pearl), does not know how to handle customers. She interrupted the fitness class at 8:55 (class ended at 9 p.m.) to tell us that we had to leave the room, despite the fact that no other bookings were listed on the sheet outside. Our instructor explained that we had several minutes left of class, and closed the door. At 9:00 p.m., we had about 30 seconds left of meditation, when Keith (studio manager) barged into the room and shouted at us to pack up our mats and exit the room immediately. I'm not sure where he was at 7:02 p.m. when the booking before us ran two minutes over. No one seemed to care then. Once the class exited the room, Nicole alleged that our instructor had "slammed the door in her face." This simply wasn't true. Nicole began arguing with the class, as we calmly explained to her that no one had slammed the door in her face. The second she felt overpowered, she started screaming at us that she was going to call security and told us that we were dismissed. I have never experienced more atrocious customer service in my life. Other clients in the hallway were alarmed at Nicole's behavior, and Keith (the manager), did nothing to calm anyone during the argument. As a result, they lost a client. Pearl Studios will continue to lose more clients if they continue to behave so unprofessionally. I've been to multiple studios in Manhattan and no one else feels the need to treat customers this poorly. Steer clear of Pearl! read more

Had a horrible experience here tonight. Employees interrupted our class yelling and screaming at our instructor in an extremely unprofessional manner. I understand if you have a disagreement but it should never be handled in that way especially in front of clients. Employee Nicole and Manager Keith actually made us feel threatened by the way they were acting. They claimed that we had to get out because there was a class waiting (our class ends at 9pm and they began yelling at us at 8:50pm) when we left the room after being forced out before 9pm there was no class waiting at all. Apparently Nicole had gotten in a minor tiff with our instructor earlier and doesn't know how to deal appropriately with controversy. So disappointed in how this whole thing was handled... read more

I come to Pearl Studios twice a week for fitness classes. The rooms are reserved for all different purposes including acting, dance and fitness classes. FACILITY: The facility is adequate for the most part. It lacks in cleanliness- if I am on the floor during classes I often get up and am covered in black filth. The bathrooms are grimy and are very cramped. They could really benefit from having showers and a larger dressing room space. The only dressing room is a 1-person sized stall behind a door (no lock) and a light on a timer with a flicker, strobe effect. Studios vary in size. STAFF: I have had pleasant experiences with Jeremy, Justin and Steve. Unfortunately, my experiences at Pearl were ruined last night by Nicole (staff member) and Keith (manager). Our class was first interrupted by Nicole with 5 minutes left and our instructor explained that she had 5 minutes to wrap up class and closed the door. Then our class was brought to an abrupt end by manager, Keith, with about a minute to spare on the clock. We were wrapping up within the next 30-60 seconds, finishing our Shavasana which is arguably the most important part of a yoga class. There were appropriate ways to handle this situation, for example, taking the instructor aside and quietly explaining the need to clear the space. However, Keith chose to yell at and threaten our instructor in front of the entire class and ORDERED us all to roll up our mats and leave immediately (despite the fact that no one was using the space after our class...) The argument escalated and led to both Keith and Nicole yelling at the members of the class who tried to explain what happened. I am appalled at the lack of respect by Pearl Studios staff for their clients and the unprofessional manner in which they "handled" the situation last night. The efficient functioning of this studio space relies on both the instructors and the Pearl Studios staff to be respectful of the space and the time they have it reserved for. We never did get a chance to finish our Shavasana. The rejuvenation of mind, body and spirit that I usually achieve during class was completely ruined by this experience. If you want to be treated with any kind of respect, I suggest you look elsewhere for space to rent or a place to take class. read more

The ONLY reason I am giving them a 2-star rating is because of how PHENOMENALLY welcoming, helpful, professional, kind, understanding, and apologetic the two gentleman at the front desk were to me. I booked the studio for some rehearsals for my company. They don't have the best rates, or the best 501(c)3, but not the worst, and you know you're getting a clean, amply air-conditioned, conveniently located studio. So I popped for the slightly higher rate to make my cast and production team happier. I arrived early to pay for the space. The guys at the desk were SUPERB!!! But they gave me a total higher than the amount I was quoted on the phone. I asked why this was. They informed me that their rates increased two days ago. I informed them that I booked the space a week ago and was quoted the old rate, never being told that I would be effected by an increase. He asked me for my invoice. I informed him that whomever I spoke to wouldn't send me an invoice, telling me that one wasn't necessary. The guy didn't even bat an eyelash. He simply said, "Make them email you an invoice every time you book a room here." Price gouging happen much??? He then asked me how I would like to proceed. I asked him to request that booking honor the price I was quoted. He went back to speak with them. He came back and asked if I would like to speak with them directly. At no point did he seem flustered or surprised by what was going on. I walked back to room filled with really bad energy and a very gruff guy who said, "What does he want?" to the front desk guy. Excuse me? We speak this way to a client, let alone one on the books as an Artistic Director for a production company that will need rehearsal space often? Oh, heck no! I remained professional, but made it very clear that I wasn't having it. The gruff dude cut me off with a shooing wave of his hand and said, "Just give him the old price." I'm already done. But the poor guys up front were trying to be so nice I really tried to reign it in around them. I eventually got my room at the discount price I was quoted. But, with all of this drama, PLUS the fact that you have to wade through a see of pre-pubescent and teen aspiring ballerinas had me in quite the tizzy. Then, to add to the drama, you have to fight Facebooking teenagers to use the complimentary computers Pearl provides. I had to wait for this, because they wireless they provide wouldn't let me connect! The guy at the door was UBER professional and kindly asked the teens to relinquish one computer for my business use. But all of this agita for a space that isn't even the best in the city?? Came to an event here over the summer and I was absolutely disgusted by their lack of professionalism. I came to an event that was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at 7:25 an employee barged in our event and didn't bother speaking to the organizer in private but yelled that we had to pack up all of our belongings, chairs, etc. because the room was being used for another event at 7:30 p.m. How rude and disrespectful are you. Number 1 we are a bunch of women and if your studio overbooked a room maybe the other event should have been moved to the other room instead of having us move and we had 30 minutes remaining. Then when we weren't moving our belongings fast enough she burst in the room again and told us we had to get out, move to another room and if we needed help she would help us. So after that, we all became so irate that we made the employee move all of our belongings and chairs to a much smaller room all by herself. I personally would never book a room here or recommend anyone utilize Pearl Studios for anything. read more

Super Clean Super nice Super duper I went here for an audition and I came to realize it's not a dance studio, but a place where people can rent studios for auditions, recordings, classes and lots of other stuff. It's pretty impressive. I really liked how organized everything was, how clean it was and how big the whole place was. The audition I went to was in Studio L which is super teeny, but for the amount of people that were there it worked (there were about 6 of us and a choreographer). If you're looking for a place to hold a class, do auditions or anything like that Pearl Studios is definitely the way to go. read more

there is 2 buildings but only 1 publicly listed so that may be a little confusing because its such a busy place! Affordable dance/performance or rehearsal space in nyc is a battle and issue- the price is worth it because the studios are well cleaned & maintained. The dressing rooms & changing areas leave something to be desired when there is other rehearsal spaces across the street for the same price. There is 2 wide screen complimentary lap tops for public usage on each floor. There is Air conditioning + fans through out each studio, a great maintenance staff as well as pianos in some of the rooms. They do not " play" with time slots= if your rehearsal/studio time is up at 10:30, they are in the room at 10:32 WITH you! There is alsoa digitized large flat screen with schedules on the wall of who is in each studio- there are 12 studios on each floor, along with an information desk. read more

It seems like the studio is rented by different organizations for events, classes, practices, etc. It would be very difficult to change in them. The studio space that I was in was large with lots of mirrors, but the facilities are simple. In the building I was in, I did see a door with a sign that says Changing Room, but didn't take a look inside. The bathrooms have tiny stalls and are somewhat dirty. No lockers either. Just place your stuff on the floor of the studio your class is in. I came to the 519 location for the Beatbox Fitness class via Classpass. From the description, I thought this would be a really pumped up kickboxing class, but it was less intense than I thought and I wasn't a fan of their music. To start off the class began slowly, so I thought I would have to do a second workout after. I was mistaken, because after he warm ups, the pace really picked up. The punches they had us do did not really do much, but the combinations with the kicks made up for it. Hardest exercise was at the end when they made us do leg lifts and holds while on our hands and knees. The workout kicked my ass in the end, and my ass also got a pretty decent workout. Still, not sure I would come back. This class was ok, but there are definitely better ones offered on Classpass. read more

I know I've been spoiled by Classpass but this place is confusing to say the least and rather gross to say more. Yes, this is in an office looking building. Yes, you won't entirely know where your class is because it could be in any room (just look at the placards outside). Sure, the studio spaces themselves work fine enough but I'd definitely think twice about coming here if the class I'm considering is offered is at this facility. The bathrooms are pretty dirty and there aren't really any changing rooms so you have to squeeze yourself into the small bathroom stall. read more

PROS: - Clean Studios - Lots of mirrors - Small windows on the doors with an optional covering to allow for privacy. - Affordable, Per Hour Rates - An upright piano is available in the room we used. I'm not sure if it's in every room. CON: - The dancers and instrumentalists in the next room were clearly heard - distracting But I am still considering renting space here for summer music classes. Organized and easily accessible (huge plus). I've gone to 4 auditions here and all have been great. I get right off the bus at Penn Station and walk straight there within 5 minutes. It's wonderful. The bathrooms are small especially since you're usually changing in there with a bunch of other people but it wasn't a big deal. Also, I'm never sure if you actually are supposed to sign in at the front of the building or not... sometime I do sometimes I don't and nobody minds. I've grown to feel comfortable in the building which is good for a place where I audition, so thank you Pearl Studios! read more

I love this place! I was able to book the same day, and extend my hours at last minute. They also provide IPOD hookups/boombox ect.,and the staff is quite friendly. Highly reccomended for dancers who are looking for private rehearsal space. They also offer Union discounts. read more

What a freaking gorgeous studio! As an off-on dancer for the last 9 years, I've been to many a dance studio and this one takes the cake. They have several classrooms and a plethora of classes going on at the same time. I took a peak into several rooms and most were large and well-kept. I can't get over how huge their space is! Rental rates to rent out a room isn't terribly expensive either. So if any dance clubs/groups are looking for an awesome space to practice in - pearl is it! P.S. Water is $1.50 :) read more

I came here for a striptease intro class. The facility is pretty nice (unlike some of the other more shady and warehouse type studios in the city). There are two floors with several rooms. It's not fancy by any means, but at least it's clean and well-lit (this just made me realize how low my standards have become!). The room for the class seemed pretty small, but that may have been due to class size. There is a mirrored wall so you can see how you dance - but the narcissist in me just appreciated the mirror in itself. They can definitely do a better job with having more bathrooms / changing rooms, as well as cleaner bathrooms. The striptease class itself was a bit cheesy, but they're fun to do with a friend. I was with 5-6 other girls and we learned a few different moves. I'd be interested in the stripper workout class since it seems they're more of a workout. Classes cost $22.5 per class which is a bit more on the pricer side. I had a deal - $18 for two classes so I thought I'd give it a shot. They do have other classes as well (salsa, ballroom, etc). If you're looking for a dance class, I would recommend this one for the facility, as well as variety of classes. read more

Practice Space If You Don't Mind Hearing Other People Practicing Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. Sometimes I've gotten quiet rooms. But other times, there'll be a trumpet on the side of one wall and a vocalist on the other. You just have to tune them out. It depends on the room -- someone more experienced with Pearl Studios than I might be able to recommend the calmest ones. It's a good place if you need a practice room in an emergency. Let's say you've got a gig coming up in Midtown and you don't have time to head to NYU or Julliard or wherever you usually do your practicing. You've very likely to find a spot at Pearl. You can do same-day, often same-hour booking and the prices are really not that bad. $20/hour for a room with a piano? OK, not great. That's pretty steep to play the piano for an hour. But if there's more than one of you and you split the bill, it's more reasonable. Lots of dancers flitting through the corridors in dancing outfits. Handsome actors standing outside of rooms, presumably waiting for their audition. Coffee and other refreshments. Wifi, if I recall correctly. You can copy your score there, too -- but I think the guy said it was a dollar a page, of something like that -- it was more than I was willing to pay. Pianos are well-tuned. I've only been there in the evenings. I wonder if the commotion dies down during the day. There's also just something nice in the name "Pearl Studios". Makes you feel like your performance is a precious gem. read more

I've been coming to Pearl Studios for several years and I was always respectful of their time. When I was close to my end time I always started to wrap up my sessions about 5 minutes prior so the next group can come in. If there were times that I was staying in the room after my slot it was only bc nobody was coming in after me n I would only be finishing up. Well... Today I happened to still be in the room way past my time. 30 minutes. Yes I know that was a bit of time but the receptionist came on the room about 10 minutes after I was done as I was packing up n talking to my client. It was still. Off peak at 4pm. She didn't say I had to leave or give me any warning I would be charged extra if I stayed in the room. Then another staff person came in, who I guess is a supervisor saying, "I'm going to have to charge you extra 30 minutes for being in the room. Can I just charge it to your card? " No warning about 20 minutes ago that if I stayed in the room I was going to be charged. If that was the case, I would have just stepped outside the room because all I was doing was talking. No consideration that I have been using their studios for over 3 years n this was 1st time I'm late in exiting. I'm in the customer service industry. If I had a customer that was running late, I would have given them courtesy notice that there could be extra charge if they stayed longer but I did not receive this. So going forward, if you choose to rent space here, beware of your time. I'm going elsewhere. read more

I LOVE PEARL. We have been renting space for our Striptease classes here for several years now....back in the day when just Rich, Victor, Kelly and Candy were the only faces you saw. Now they are blowin' up. Added a 12th floor, super cool new staff, coffee!! (a little on the weak side, but cheap so it evens out), treats, vending machines and even pop tarts. Yes, I said it, pop tarts. They bend over backwards to accommodate. They keep the rooms clean and stocked with needed chairs and tables and pianos if you need em. i just can't say enough about these guys. Its been nice to watch them grow and they've been nothing but good to us as we expand and rent (and sometimes cancel) more space as well. I like the fact that every room is closed off, so no windows to peek in and see whoever is in the room, so total privacy. Some studios have windows but to the outside. The 12th floor has a/c you can control yourself in each room which is good if you want it hot or cold for dancing. Now we teach striptease classes but there is EVERYTHING going on here. Major auditions of Broadway musicals, dance classes, yoga, acting, opera, kids acting, dancing, and singing, and even those how to pick up girls seminars. You even see the occasional celeb. I walked in on Anne Hathaway once. Super cool. If you need to rent space for anything, they got ya covered. Much love to Pearl! MUAH! read more

I started taking classes here a couple weeks ago through the Piel Canela school. This review is not about the classes themselves, but the facilities at Pearl Studios. The staff is consistently rude; I know that they don't manage the Piel Canela classes, but every time you ask a question about them, you can expect an eye roll, a mean tone, and told that they don't have anything to do with them. Even if the information is something simple like whether a class is canceled or not (which they know at the front desk) they will tell you that they "aren't supposed to tell you this" before giving you your answer, as if to discourage any future interactions. I know that they don't run the classes, but they should still treat visitors to their building well. So if you're considering renting space here, just know that your guests will be given a huge amount of sass by out of work actor/dancer types with an attitude who clearly don't care about their day job. And the floors, bathrooms and elevators are kinda dirty. read more

Used the place to practice dances for our wedding. Went a total of 4 times. Location is right by Penn Station. Facilities are adequate, and they are reasonably priced for the area. Rooms are well kept. One issue is some of the rooms have inadequate A/C, which is tough on people during the summer. read more

This place is a great place to find dance, fitness, yoga, and martial arts, and rape prevention classes any day of the week. Very spacious and affordable hourly rates if you are hosting a class, and most classes are affordable to the public because of the low overhead cost to the host of the class. There are pianos in every room and polished sprung wood flooring. Clean enviroment, snacks, tea, coffee and vending machines on the 12th floor studios. Great place overall. read more

I've rehearsed several Off-Broadway shows and other productions at Pearl, and it's probably my favorite studio in NYC. The studios are comfortable and getting enough chairs, tables and music stands has never been a problem. The staff are always helpful and often have gone above and beyond in helping us with last-minute and unusual requests. The copy machine by the front desk is a great convenience for rehearsing new works, where script and score changes may be needed immediately. read more
