Major American plays were put on at the theater - by writers including F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Eugene O'Neill, W. H. Auden, Gertrude Stein, Samuel Beckett, Pablo Picasso, T. S. Elliot, Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, David Mamet... The film studio A24 bought the theater in 2023. After an extensive renovation, the theater reopened in the fall of 2025. I visited the theater last week for a performance of You Got Older. The play was great. The theater is small and intimate and was very comfortable. It felt more like an upscale movie theater than a theater (cupholder in the seat in front, comfortable spacing between the rows). My only complaints are small. I don't mind paying $20 for a glass of wine, but if I do, I'd prefer an actual pour. They're charging $20 for half glasses of wine in tiny plastic cups. It's natural wine, and I'm sure it's pricier than what other theaters are pouring. But $20 for that amount of wine almost made me laugh. Or cry. My other small complaint is that there's no lobby to speak of. When you walk in, there's nowhere to go - some people were standing in the concessions line, thinking it must be the line to scan your ticket. It's just tight. There's nothing they can do about that, since it's a small, historic theater. But the next time I attend a performance, I'll probably show up just a few minutes before - it'll save me money on a second thimble of wine, too. I really enjoyed my first performance at Cherry Lane Theatre. It has an incredible history and is now a plush, comfortable little Off-Broadway theater option. If their future theater productions are anything like You Got Older, I'll be back.

I don't want to give too much about the play away because I know she will perform it elsewhere but if this is the sort of theater coming out of Cherry Lane, it's a harbinger of good things for the future. The theater itself is quite intimate, with only 16 rows or so. I was near the back and didn't feel like I had to squint to see the performance on stage. Whoever did the set design made very good use of the stage space such that the audience could feel transported into different "rooms" and time zones. Acoustics were pretty good too though I would occasionally miss a part of the dialogue over the sound of the cacophonous laughter in the audience. There is a bar in the front and you can bring drinks into the theater. I wish I could've also checked out Wild Cherry, the restaurant attached to the theater, but it's too poppin right now. Some of the best stars got their start at Cherry Lane and it's lovely that they're drawn to such a place a short subway ride from where I live.

I am rating La MaMa based on the concept alone…read more The actual event I attended there was not quite what I thought it was going to be, but I don't regret attending. I attended "Jupiter Invincible." I thought it was going to be a play, but it turned out to be a comic book reading with voice actors. And that wasn't what I expected, but was still very interesting. And the voice actors were talented and entertaining. Where things went sort of south is that the event was sold as 7-9 PM, but it lasted a little less than an hour. They only read the first of four comics. My thought is that they had planned the second hour for an author talk, but the author couldn't make it. That being said, the staff were super nice. So nice that the producers of the event contacted me later because when I bought my ticket, the price was 20 dollars. When the event price changed to 10 dollars (and really, that's a bargain), they made sure to refund me 10 dollars. They didn't have to do that, but they did. Again, the content was interesting and experimental, it's just an hour is an awfully short period of time, especially if you aren't coming from the immediate vicinity. It is a small theater space, so there isn't a bad seat in the house. They aren't folding chairs as some reported, at least in the theater I was in. They are pretty nice straight back chairs with velour or a similar material. I wasn't uncomfortable. They have a lot of edgy and experimental theater here, so I can't help but support them. They also do a lot of workshops and community events. I'll be interested to see what they come up with next. Regardless of short running time, the show inspired me to check out the rest of the "Jupiter Invincible" series.

The location it was held was so small and intimate, allowing for crowd interaction, while limited as it was, was extremely welcome. You go to watch a dancers perform on stage and while the choreography was just simply amazing, what you also get out of watching this show is an amazing story acted out by amazing performers/actors. You can see it on their faces and their movements, every emotion and intent they meant to portray on that stage to illustrate an amazing story telling experiences. I honestly do not think there was a dry eye in the house the night we went. I can't wait for the next chance to see Beyond Babel again, there is no doubt I will try to see this or any other production this troop does next.

The seats are like the stacking chairs you usually find at conferences. What I really like about the Gym at Judson are the productions. I recently saw PigPen's The Old Man and the Old Moon there, and it was one of my favorite theatrical experiences yet. I highly encourage you to check them out!

However, patrons consistently cite frustrating downsides, including exceptionally tight legroom, very steep balcony inclines, and obstructive side-orchestra sightlines. At the orchestra, while offering an up-close experience, extreme side orchestra seats often suffer from obstructed views. Legroom and seat widths throughout the venue are noticeably tight, so booking an aisle seat is highly recommended for taller patrons. The mezzanine has the best balance of price and view. However, the rear section can suffer from the balcony overhang, which cuts off the top of the stage. The balcony offers a surprisingly clear and affordable vantage point, but the steep pitch can feel precarious to those afraid of heights. Restrooms are famously tight and lines move slowly at intermission, making it best to plan ahead. Drinks are available for purchase, though lines can be long. Because food/drink policies can be strictly enforced by house staff, be prepared to consume any outside snacks before entering the auditorium. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed watching " Hell's Kitchen"

And yes, once again an obvious head obstructed my view, but this review will be focused on the show. Getting back to the production. The clever premise of the show spans several years back in L.A. whereupon comedians join forces to literally stand up and read from celebrities memoirs/autobiographies---and it works. A 90 minute solo, mash up and dialogue being read by the comedians offers hilarious entertainment. The celebrity memoirs included those past and present. Granted some of the audience roared with laughter while I remained amused. I was never a stand up comic show kind of gal though I've seen plenty. In my opinion, what was really funny was the manner in which the memoirs were written. Some were so painfully bad. No disrespect to those who passed on, but it included Suzanne Somers, Bob Newart and Carol Channing. The contemporary autobiographies were equally bad, including Matthew McConaughey, Tiger Woods, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sylvester Stallone and so on. The roster of comedians will always be changing until it concludes its run in August. I saw Mario Cantone, Ralph Macchio, Brooke Adams to name a few. I didn't recognize some of the other comedians. If comedy with a twist is your thing, it's worth checking out. As the comedians emphasized, they can't make this stuff up as it was spoken in the words of the celebrity authors.

I splurged on a seat on the stage and it was worth every penny. The Hudson Theatre is such a beautiful, intimate venue, and being that close to Tracee during a one-woman show made the experience even more special. She even chatted with me before the show! There's audience participation, and somehow I ended up with a speaking part. The staff who escorted me to my seat and coached me through my lines beforehand were absolutely delightful. Funny, moving, incredibly human, and unlike anything I've experienced in a theater before. An unforgettable night.

Many talented folks have graced this stage before fame and after as well. The staff is friendly yet effective and some are even work study students depending on the event. The beauty of it is that you can't tell the difference most times. Bathroom facilities are in the lower level and incredibly clean. Best seats are orchestra center after Row E.

The Park Avenue Armory is a historic 19th century, Gothic Revival, military building that was…read morerestored to become an incredible NYC cultural institution. It was build in the late 1800s for a prestigious Civil War regiment... it was preserved and then became a cultural center in 2007. Make sure to enjoy the architecture, decor, art in the smaller rooms open to the public (Tiffany glass windows, turquoise tiled fireplace). The only play I've seen in this space was The Doctor. I also saw their productions of The Lehman Trilogy and Illinoise once they transferred to Broadway. Most recently i visited the Armory for the CLINEMAN installation. I spent a couple of hours watching the porcelain bowls glide across the pools of water... listening to the different pitches of their chimes.

The architecture is incredible, and the second you walk in you can feel the history. In a weird way, it kind of makes you think, "Wait... is this place haunted?" or "What stories could these walls tell?" I've been lucky enough to see a bunch of really cool art installations here over the years, plus a few fashion shows. If you've never been, definitely check out their website to see what's going on because there's always something interesting happening. The latest installation I saw had three huge pools inside this giant wooden deck with blown glass bowls floating around on the water. The whole thing was super relaxing. Some people were taking naps, some were quietly talking with friends, and others were just sitting there watching the glass drift around and soaking in the ASMR vibes. It's such a cool example of how creative they get with the space. In my dream world, I'd get married here lol.
