My daughter has been taking horse riding lessons with Mrs. Peck since January 2025. This has been an amazing experience and opportunity for my daughter. Not only has she come out of her shell, she has developed more confidence and self-esteem. She is learning how to ride a horse, how to care for a horse, how to properly saddle a horse. Brooke has learned responsibility and respect for animals. Mrs. Peck takes a serious approach to teaching her students about horse riding and care. She starts with the basics of how to care for horses like brushing and grooming them, cleaning the face, using the correct body terms and how to saddle and tack up a horse and ready for riding. She takes safety, very seriously her no nonsense approach teaches children not only to respect an animal that weighs over 1000 pounds. But to have compassion and love for horses. Do not come to Peck Farms expecting this to be a pony ride experience, it is not. She will teach your child how to be responsible. She will teach your child how to take ownership of riding a horse from start to finish. She teaches with love and kindness and compassion, but she also wants to make sure that your child understands directions thoroughly and that they do not get hurt or hurt her horses. I've sat in on my daughter's lesson I have watched and listened, and I appreciate the respect she gives my daughter as well as the kindness and compassion. She shows her. For anyone that says differently about Mrs. Peck. I invite you to come down and actually watch a lesson.Aa few reviews I've read do not match my experience or my daughter's. Listening to a male instructor talk about how much he hated Trump and politics was so negative. I was here to have fun. I am just a young person who would like to have a good positive experience outside of my life of schooling. Lastly, I felt misled at times. The owner often made promises regarding the quality of the lessons and the state of the facility that did not hold up during my visits. This inconsistency was disheartening and left me feeling as though I could not trust the information provided. In summary, I cannot recommend Pecks based on my experience. There are many other stables that prioritize both quality instruction and a well-maintained environment, and I urge anyone considering lessons to explore those options instead. Mrs.Peck and her assistant Vivi are down to earth and wonderful which is a breath of fresh air. They create a welcoming and safe atmosphere where my daughter thrives. Horseback riding is teaching my daughter patience and discipline and it's giving her some much needed grit. Well, I must say I am a total fan of Nance Peck. I have been around horses for 30+ years, and I have never met anybody at her level of expertise! I met Nance a few years ago when I set out to find a seasoned professional to teach my son & daughter how to ride and care for a horse. From day one, I knew I was dealing with an exceptional horsewoman with a vast wealth of knowledge as well as extremely insightful and skillful with horses. I think she has been a Lic professional for over 50 years, with over 10 years of experience prior to that! Not to mention, there is no one around that's a fraction as decorated as her; she has over 10 certifications! Hardly anybody around has any certifications, let alone more than one! And let me tell you, it shows! Everyone I have seen who listens to her and takes her tutelage seriously becomes excellent with horses, and their horses are healthier and happier (and way better looking) than 90% of what's out there. And to say she is the real deal is an understatement. My kids are so confident and solid on a horse now! They look better on a horse than most because Nance educated drilled the fundamentals, skills, and good form into their minds. We started with summer camp then immediately went into private lessons for my 8 year old daughter. The first day of camp my daughter was hesitant and nervous and by the end of the week Mrs. Peck turned her into a completely different rider. We have done several private lessons and each lesson she learns more and more. Mrs. Peck's style of teaching can be strict, but it's for the safety of the rider and horses. I will start with the negative and then proceed with the positive as I always try to end with something that is good. Negative: stalls are run down and facility upkeep is lacking, everything needs a face lift. The owner Nance is not a good business woman, and that's why she always has stalls open and a small clientele. She stole my saddle and lied and said she didn't have it when I owed her money. I would have paid her if she wouldn't have stolen my saddle and started getting extremely nasty with me and threatening to sue. Things would have gone a lot differently if she hadn't stolen my saddle and basically held it for ransom without my knowledge. Lucky for me I found my saddle at a near by saddlery where she had it on consignment and bought it back nearly 3 years later. Now we are even and square on me owing her money. I did not give her permission to hold my saddle as collateral. I advice against doing business or working out any deals with her without having a written detailed contract. Positive: two very nice sized arenas, and the footing is fairly nice. Couple decent turn outs, nice round pen and bull pen. (Round pen and bull pen footing isn't super great but gets the job done). Also great trails near by. Overall I advice anyone who wishes to board, take lessons, work here, or do any sort of business be careful and proceed with cautions. Nance can be very sweet, but also very mean and nasty. Get everything in writing always. read more

I can't believe I'm going to waste my time trying to answer this woman's made up story. You can not be rational with someone irrational. Trying to make my horse's colic to test a machine is insane, since we were monitoring healthy horse's gut sounds to find out what the normal range is for a horse.There has never been a device before that could continuously measure guts sounds. We were establishing the standard. I was working for a very large Medical company developing a FDA approved device into the equestrian market. We were simultaneously at an Equine Hospital measuring unhealthy gut sounds of colicing horse's. As far as her accusations regarding wanting her contacts. I worked for Sheik Mohammed from Dubai for over 10 years! He is one of the largest breeders and owners of Thoroughbred race horse's. If she has been more pleasant, I could have actually helped her, sending her horse's for lay ups and horse's for her to train and resell. As far as her farm being busy and spooking horse's, there was no one around me at all. My horse loaded quietly in the trailer, as she had done 100's of times before. If you drive to her barn, you will see it is very quiet and not busy. She had recently had a surgery and was in a lot of pain and on medication. Maybe that is why she got things confused? I was not trying to make any horse's colic, nor did I need her contacts. read more

The horses are all fed well, the stalls AND paddocks are mucked every day. My horses always have fresh water and they have never been more peaceful, calm and happy. Nance Tapley-Peck's care of my older gelding and the hands-on compassionate support (including dosing with meds) during my mare's final illness has meant so much. The horses are very well-fed - if you have older horses, they will be well looked after - no skinny horses here! The paddocks are large (no, really, they are HUGE) so the horses get their Yeehaws out and stay in decent shape just cruising around. The facilities aren't fancy, but they are clean and well-maintained. Nance has tons of knowledge and is very willing to share it with the boarders. There is no arrogance in her - just no-nonsense, straight talk - quite refreshing from some of the "salesmen" I've encountered in the horse world. I have felt so at home here and made some wonderful friends, especially Nance - she took my friend and me in on extremely short notice without batting an eye, even moving her own horses to make room for our three. I started lessons a couple months ago with Mrs. Peck. I knew from the first lesson this was the place for me. Mrs. Peck has such a great way of teaching you, she constantly gives you little reminders, (i.e feet down, how to position your hands), that are kind of tricky to keep track of everything when you first start riding, so it's super helpful. She also lets me know when I'm doing the right thing and is very encouraging. She truly cares that you are learning to do things the correct way, ensuring safety of rider and horses. I highly recommend Peck Farm. I have been at Peck Farm for many years. I was there in 2005 for about 5 years (I bought my first horse from Nance) and then returned back (with a new horse) in 2015. I was with 2 different trainers for the five years I was away. The first trainer moved to 3 different facilities and then abandoned all of her clients. My second trainer drank beer while she was training and also allowed her drunk boyfriend to ride my older gelding. My new horse, who had been at several different facilities, is the happiest I have ever seen him since he has been at Peck Farm. Nance is a working owner, which means she is aware of everything that is going on with each of the horses on the property. The stalls are kept spotless and the arenas are kept well groomed and watered. Nance provides top of the line feed. I am confused by some of the more recent negative reviews. Nance has NEVER stolen horses. She recently saved the life of several horses who were in terrible condition when she picked them up. Nance is a very knowledgeable teacher. She is very careful with her students AND never puts her horses in any type of danger. No horses have died recently and I cannot imagine that Nance would ever try to make a horse colic. I have also watched Nance train children. She is extremely professional and expects her students to be willing to learn. She always works closely with all her students to ensure that they are learning what they need to know to not only stay safe, but also to become accomplished riders. I visited Peck Farm a couple of times. Once to meet the barn owner/trainer and see the place to see if this would be a good fit for me and a potential horse purchase later on down the line. I took a lesson the following week. From my first impressions of this barn as a customer & as a fellow business owner, taking the time to review is important both for the potential customer and the business to grow and thrive. I spoke with the business owner over the phone before meeting and found her to be VERY knowledgeable of the horse world all around. She is honest, up front, will tell you pros and cons, and tell you financially just how much a horse and the horse world will be as well as the time and the training you may need, etc. That part about her was very pleasant. She has a light and funny sense of humor and is a REAL person. I was excited to meet her. When I visited the farm, we had a scheduled appointment time for 10:30am. I didn't see anyone at the farm for a half and hour after that time. I waited and then was greeted. The meeting was fine and we scheduled a lesson. Arriving for my lesson, there were people at the barn that morning. No one said hello. No one was friendly, they just kept to themselves. I went to meet the barn owner and she was yelling at the horse she was lunging with a not so pleasant tone. I understand that there is a level of sterness you need with an animal, but being in the horse world for 20 years, I have seen all kinds of treatment and this wasn't what I would call good. I gave the benefit of the doubt though. We all have ways of handling and I didn't know the horse or morning she had so moving on. She did introduce me to the couple owners that were there, that was fine and they were nice. They said the horse care here is great and they never have to worry. My lesson was a half and hour to 40 minutes later. For a single person with no responsibilities that would have been fine, but I had my little one being watched and I felt terrible for how long it took. The lesson was good. We didn't jump. She is big on equitation and safety first. Good. She wants to get to know the rider before anything else, totally fine. Her tone was good with me, but I felt like everything I had ever learned was torn down and instead of it being a good time, I felt more and more anxious. I learned a lot from her knowledge, but I think there are ways to deliver that knowledge that could have been better and more encouraging. There were a few times I almost got off and walked to my car and after the lesson I wanted to cry. Haven't felt that way with a trainer in YEARS. She uses a lot of examples and similarities to other things to make it easier for people to understand, she stands behind her training, she follows George Morris, and she is very serious in safety it seems. I would be too if I was running my own show too! She does it all! Now with that being said, running your own show is a LOT of responsibility. It gave me a perspective of the horse world to look at. A lot of responsibility can mean a lot of stress too. She has a few ranch hands, but everything else is all her. My husband and I own a business so I can understand that stress. I do believe though that there is a way to conduct yourself and your business that is professional and kind and that I did not see at this barn. When she wasn't stressed and just talking on the phone, lovely, but under the working circumstances, not relaxing and not enjoyable. We do this sport and throw our money into this "land pit" to enjoy, to relax, to learn to be better riders, and to love horses and I did not feel that at this barn. As much as I would have loved to learn from her knowledge because that she has indeed, I kept thinking life is too short and I need this to be positive. My daughter has been riding at Peck Farm for about three years now and Nance has basically become family. The dozens of equine-related licenses and certifications she holds shows through in her work. Not to mention the wall full of show ribbons my daughter has thanks to Nance. And safety is always number one; something you don't always see at those "fast food-style chain operations" that are solely interested in horse-leasing scams and getting you off the horse as quickly as possible. We "shopped around" before choosing Nance and got over a dozen recommendations from friends in the industry and Nance's name was a recurrent theme. I am only rating this business as a training facility for children riders. If you are looking to board your horse, the owner of this barn will bend over backward to properly care for your horse. However, if you want your child to learn to ride horses, please look elsewhere. I spent the better part of a year trying to understand why the owner of this barn was so mean to my child. While this trainer is the singlemost knowlegeable horse person i know, she is also surprisingly rude. I have watched, slack jawed, as she berates workers and ferriers. I never know what to say when she is popping off with rude remarks to student riders. I have noticed that the worst verbal beatings are dolled out when parents are absent... Parents, beware of the verbal abuse that takes place behind your back. The happiest parents are the ones who drop their kid off and dont stick around to watch the lesson. The owner of this barn asked my child to work her day camp, then after three hot difficult weeks, refused to pay the previously agreed upon wages. She advised us to pre-register for horse shows that she later cancelled at the last minute, leaving me out my hard earned money. While I can go on with personal accounts, the worst violation made by this business owner is that she lacks the caring and patience that makes for a good teacher. This trainer will insult, ridicule and make fun of your child, then turn and greet you with a smile when you pick your child up. Life is just too short to pay mean people to hurt your kid. I have been riding for over ten years and I have been at Peck Farm for over two years. I tend not to leave reviews, but after the other negative and petty reviews, I have decided to put in my two cents. All trainers have their own way of teaching. There will be people that come and go from each barn, for whatever reasons. I have never been disrespected in any of my lessons, nor have I seen it. The "yelling" is not to be mean but to hear what has been asked of you to do. Nance's number one priority is safety for both the rider and the horse. I have ridden at many different places and have seen people come and go. She is an honest trainer who will not put in in danger and will be honest. If you do not like honesty, than maybe this is not the place to be. None of the horses at Peck Farm are over worked. All the horses are well taken care of. Nance is well versed in the heath and care of horses and makes sure that they happy and healthy. I have been put on horses to help other students because show by example after repeated tries of explaining on how to ask your horse to do it correctly. If you had a bad or unpleasant experience, I am sorry, but to hide behind a computer and say the untruthful things online, shame on you. If I could rate higher I definitely would! Nance has a lot of experience and can teach you a lot if you are willing to listen. The horses are always cared for and if you need anything just ask. I have never seen my horse happier to be boarded here and is improving every time I ride her. read more

Nance Tapley Peck is an honest, caring and compassionate person. She loves her horses, is an accomplished rider herself and really knows her stuff. Safety is her first priority, but she makes it fun for the kids and very educational. My daughter has learned so much from her - about horses, horse care, riding, as well as responsibility and self-esteem. My 7-year old gets her own pony, puts her halter on, leads her to the cross ties, brushes her, picks her hooves, washes her face, tacks her up, all by herself before her lesson. It is amazing how far she has progressed. She's loving every minute of it! I was looking to find a comfortable, down-to-earth, wonderful equine experience for her and I'm so glad we found Peck Farm - Nance's a gem!!! read more

I have been riding at Peck Farms for the past three years. I can highly recommend Nance as a great trainer with an encyclopedic knowledge of horses and riding. She is a genuinely nice person, as well, and her serious students all respect and love her. Unlike most instructors, Nance is a certified judge and is a well respected rider herself. She encourages her students to participate in organized competitions and has coached numerous champions. She strives to have each student live up to his or her potential. Her first priority is that her students learn proper technique and that they protect themselves, their horse and others. If you are serious about horses and riding and being safe, then Peck Farms is the place for you. read more

Several aspects keep me and my two horses at Peck for four (five?) years and counting despite the 40+ minute drive (each way). Chief among them are the basics: Food and water. Nance goes out of her way to deliver good hay (as good as anyone can get in SoCal at any given time) at the best possible prices, she then has it fed on a consistent schedule, and my horses always have ample clean, fresh water (they live in a paddock -- a quite large, pleasant one by local standards, perhaps the primary thing that keeps me at Peck year after year -- and so they drink from a water trough, not bubblers, much to my silly, water-loving gelding's delight). I also like that Nance treats all the horses and their owners with equal consideration whether or not they are in a training/lesson program or, like me and my duo of equines, more self sufficient and thus not tremendous revenue streams for her business. But when you do need her help -- for instance when I first arrived and my then 23 year old gelding (currently 28) was extremely sick, suffering from aspiration pneumonia and anaerobic sinusitis after choking on some pellets up north a week earlier -- she's EXTREMELY reliable about working with the vet and carrying out his/her instructions, whether that be dispensing medications, giving shots, wrapping injured limbs, or otherwise being the onsite caregiver we all WANT to be for our animals but living circumstances, work, etc., perhaps prevent us from being. I hemmed and hawed as to whether to award Peck Farm four or five starts (I hate such rating systems) and went with four only because I think nearly all barns have some room for improvement (personally, I miss having a large turnout arena but get why some barns don't have them; Peck does have normal sized turnouts) But it's a tough call: How many barns, particularly ones so fair on pricing, are as considerate and accommodating about each horse's needs (within reason, of course)? And at Peck the basics are absolutely there, Nance is considerate of owner's pocketbooks and gives options rather than demands whenever possible and safe (for instance, would you like additional sand in your paddock, or would you prefer to wait, there still being some from last year, and not see any changes in board fees?). We have three nice arenas + an exercise track to ride on, great access to the phenomenal Happy Camp Regional Park (sandy soils allow for riding nearly immediately after most rains), and the overall atmosphere at Peck Farm is friendly, low key, no drama, which I love and find healthy for horses and owners alike. read more
