I guess I didn't really explore this park as much I should have during my first visit, as my memory did not recall how big the park actually is. And perhaps I was just bothered by how inconspicuous the park entrance is: it's a gate that does not immediately look like the entrance to a park, which is how I missed it the first time I visited over a decade ago. During my recent second visit, I came back with a better appreciation for parks and birds. I did not expect to find any birding lifers here, but I in fact found four in one day. I heard the Green Heron before I saw it, and photographed it without realizing what it was. I just thought it was another Black-Crowned Night Heron, but boy was I delighted to find out later when I was reviewing my photos that it was a Green Heron lifer. The park appears to know it's a great spot for birding as there is signage indicating possible seasonal bird encounters. Perhaps I should stop talking about birds, but I can't help it. Also, "Peck" Road? Birds are the point. It's a large park with a delightful amount of nature to get immersed in. I can't wait to come back for a third visit! read more

A friend of mine introduced me to this hidden gem a year ago for birding. I recently returned and fell in love with it all over again. This place is a birder's paradise, with its large lakes and blooming flowers, inviting many bird species. I've counted over 20 different species in just a few hours of walking a whole loop. My only complaint is that it was closed the one day I made the long drive out, on a day that it wasn't supposed to be closed. But thankfully there is a cut out on the gate to the side so you can still walk in. You'll just have to park on the street instead of drive in and park inside. So this is just something to watch out for - random closings. read more

This park is literally 5 minutes driving distance from my place, discover this park few years ago during pandemic and it has become my regular place ever since. Plenty of parking spaces, very friendly and convenient environment and there're restrooms and water fountains. It's perfect for family outing, friends hangout and definitely pet friendly. I always come here when the weather is not allowing me to hike but I still need some nature time to recharge and refresh my restless mind. Highly recommended to all age groups. read more

There is so much water too (yes, it looks a bit dirty but it makes a nice environment and scenery). We came on a beautiful 70 degree weather day with breeze and clouds in the sky. A small park near a lake. I took my dog here for a quick walk around the park and it was pretty nice and peaceful. The normal route is short maybe half a mile but you can checkout the bike trail which expands quite far down. Overall seemed pretty well maintained and they had plenty of parking plus restrooms. When I arrived the place looked a little run down and could use a bit of maintenance. I'm not complaing though especially with no entreance fee, there seemed to be plenty of parking (I showed up on a Friday afternoon) has restrooms,which seemed to be pretty maintained. I was pleasenly surprised by the size of this lake it was much lager than what I was able make out on Google maps. The goal was to fish & catch large mouth Bass,the lake looked very promising with all the right elements to make for successful fishing voyage. However I found it to be a pretty hard place to hook up. Fished for a good 7hrs and thankful halfway through I finally landed a nice Bass (2.8#'s) to be exact and later had one trailing a lure but it never took it, other than that the bite was extremely slow to known existant. I also noticed that later in the afternoon it can get pretty breezy and depending on where your at on the water it can be challange to fish. Overall not a bad place to spend the day fishing or hanging out. If you have a bike, looked like there was a decent bike pathway to go riding. I'll probably come back again. read more

Recently started going here and it's been a great experience. I actually did community service at the park and that's how I found out about it. I've lived probably like 15 minutes away from the park all my life and recently found out it was opened to the public. Took my son to go throw some rocks at the water and he loved being there too. Great atmosphere and got to watch families fish too. The parking lot is a bit sketchy at times though, but all in all it's a nice park. read more

Just went there recently after longing for a place that isn't too crowded to walk my golden retriever, and it was a great spot for a brief walk with my dog! She really enjoys the off the path routes that lead you to the shore - where a comfy breeze sets the mood for relaxation. The Mungi Lake there hosts many different type of fishes, and folks of all kinds seem to come here to relax and do some fishing. Many parts of the trails are still under development, where you can see small plants being planted. Went biking here for the first time early in the morning. The views during sunrise were really nice! There is a dedicated bike path specifically for cycling as well (although plenty of walkers/runners use it as well). My only wish about this place is that there was more to see. Nice place for a stroll and views of a man made body of water! It's so nice to have something like this in SGV. It's very calm and I see people fish here. There's also a walking trail and a bike trail that leads south all the way down to PCH I think. I wish people would be more considerate of their trash and not litter but overall very nice place for a stroll. Probably wouldn't come back. I wouldn't really recommend this spot to anyone. This place might be cool for biking or having a small picnic but not much else. The park is full of vagrants. It is somewhat well maintained but the water is absolutely gross. Sewage gets dumped into the lake and it shows. You'll get to see ducks and cranes if you get close enough to the water. If you want to loop around the lake, don't, it dead ends it does not loop because the gates are closed. I was really enjoying my walk around here until I realized they didn't put in the work to make the trail loop back to the parking lot. You can bike all the way to the beach (29 miles). There's a good amount of parking but Legg lake is much nicer. I recommend just going there instead. read more

This is a great hidden gem in the San Gabriel Valley. I enter thru the bike path off Las Tunas and if you follow the bike path you end up with a view of a body of water and if you face north it's a beautiful scene of the mountains and the water. It makes for a nice bike ride. It's part of the Emeral Necklace path so you can make your ride shorter or longer depending on when you want to stop and turn around. Alongside the path there is the occasional trash and tents but overall a nice path. And if you don't bike I see people walking on this path as well. read more

went there today the park is beautiful But... the safety of this location is questionable!! to say the least. There are many shady people and vagrants hanging around!! When I arrived, I parked way to the right of the restrooms, I sat in my car to survey the area as I have never been here before. This guy was standing outside the restrooms staring at me and my car. I noticed him almost from the time I parked because he was staring... He is a young Hispanic man (20-30) with very short hair. He has a cast on his left leg and was on crutches. He finally went to his car which was parked way at the end of the lot to the left of the rest rooms. I got out and walked around the lake I was not gone long maybe 10-15 minutes When I returned to my car, he was parked one space over from my car with one empty space between the two cars. This was very suspicious... So, I took two photos of his car. I got into my car, and he peeked at me seeing that I was now staring at him.. Then he rolled up his heavy tinted windows so I could not photograph him.. Be careful out here ladies... I have no idea what he was planning to do but... I will not be coming back. read more

This park represents a concerted effort to create green spaces in otherwise urban-industrial areas. When I was a boy, this area was little more than a service road and a small dirt lot, adjacent to the greater Rio Hondo runoff area, commonly called "Peck's Pit." We fished here a few times as kids, and caught a stocked trout or two. We always thought the shallow, muddy water might also be hiding a dead body or two, but that was more associated with the cutthroats and gangsters that used to hang out here. This new space is pretty clean and xeriscaped. A small walking path weaves around the small park, passing grassy areas, heavily mulched planting beds, picnic tables, and some younger shade trees. The restrooms are clean and well stocked. This park is also the terminus of the "east fork" of the Rio Hondo Bike trail... A fork in the path about 1/4 mile south of the park leads up to Live Oak Blvd. in Arcadia. Heading south along this trail actually links up with the San Gabriel River trail, and goes all the way to Seal Beach. A few folks park cars here early morning and use it as a starting point for their bike rides. Because it is adjacent to the storm drain/River channel, and well within the industrial parts of unincorporated Arcadia and El Monte, there are a few homeless guys here from time to time. Otherwise it's a nice little spot to hang. read more

It's super local near where I live. Just recently built i think about a year ago. I remember this place was still under construction. There is lots of routes to go running for a nice mile run or even longer. There is lots of wild life around, especially a lot of birds near the lake. No fishing, alcohol and there is a sign to tell you what you can and can't do. Come here during the morning during the week where it is empty. It feels very peaceful. read more

I can't believe it's so close-by and it's near where my parents like to get cheap eggs (Nichol's Egg Ranch). This is a pretty good place for pictures and a nice place for a stroll along the lake with a buddy. It may look like a scene out of "Criminal Minds" (so don't go alone) but it's quiet and serene, and a unique place to escape from the boring suburbs haha. This is an interesting park: it has a mixture of desolation, size and beauty. Nestled in the strange land known as Unincorporated LA County, -it's on the border of Arcadia and El Monte, you can enter the park from Peck Ave, or a few bike paths, the main one is next to the golf range on Live Oak. There really is a strange beauty in this park. You can easily spend an hour or two in here walking around observing. Bring a friend or two, some water and you'll have yourself a decent time. Great park to just take a walk or go cycling. There is plenty of open space to wonder upon. Crowded? Not so much. You will still stumble upon others who are merely going on a bike ride, a run, pr even walking their dog. My love and I have been coming here for a while now. Great place to start your cycling morning. At around 7am, there's lots of parking available. From here to Bell Gardens is about 16 miles of trail. Average ups and downs but generally easy ride, even for the rusty cyclists. I don't recommend going alone. Some homeless here and there that, although many ride this trail, you may find yourself riding alone and some points. Be safe. Bathrooms are newish, clean. Recommend for cycling start/stop only. Not for picnics or other activities. read more

This place is another hidden gem that I stumbled upon. Place is huge. There's plenty of open space if you ever want to walk around, sight see, or have a picnic. This is definitely a place to go if you want to take some pictures or go for a run. There are also bike paths that go around the lake too, which goes pretty far out. Depending on what time you come, you can get a pretty nice view. I came around sunset, and I got some pretty good pictures while running. There are ducks in the lake, and sometimes they fly around too, so you can make use of the photo op if you're ever into photography. This feels like a place where people will come to shoot scenes for movies. Tip: If you stay til dark, they will sometimes close the gate to the exit. I thought I couldn't get out, but I got a tip from someone that you can just lift up the gate handle and open it because it's not locked. This was before their actual close time at 6pm though. My go to place in El Monte for jogging. It's a nice park for fishing, walking your dog, biking and jogging. They've redone the park since my high school days so the older, bigger trees are gone. They're trying to rebuild it up so lots of areas with picnic tables and bbq pits. The bike path goes along the wash and is a great stretch of nicely paved road to run and bike down. Can get narrow with both bicyclists and runners, but the park opens at 6 am, so just come early! Tons of parking spaces too. I prefer to walk/jog over. =) read more

The park itself is just so-so, but perfect for walking or jogging with an amazing view of the lake. Time your trip right, and have a romantic sunset moment. *wink wink* Personally I think it's an even better place to go biking, with bike lanes that have a couple of small inclines/slopes to make it an intermediate challenge. I've only gone down as far as the El Monte Airport (go watch small planes fly overhead), though it looks like the lanes continue further down. It also connects to the Santa Anita Wash trail northbound (perfect as it makes it easy to ride to the park from my house), though that lane is only partially paved, better suited for mountain bikes and horses. Park hours are from 6:30am-4pm, which isn't terribly important unless you plan on using their parking lot. No admission fees, which makes it a better deal than going to the Santa Fe Dam. read more

My fella and I have been on an exercise kick lately. While visiting family in LA we were in search of a place to do a little walking with a nice atmosphere. My aunt is a regular here, always taking all the neighborhood dogs for walks and enjoying the scenery. Since she recommends it so highly and I used to come here when I was back in school, I decided to give it a shot. My fella and I had a lovely morning walk here and enjoyed the greenery and animals all around. We saw ducks, chicken, squirrels and plenty of people walking in the area walking with their dogs and fishing in the water. They are working on construction here, so I hope to enjoy even more loveliness in the area in the future and will probably frequent this location on our future visits to my hometown. read more

How is there something as nice as this so close to El Monte? I mean it isn't the most awesome park there is but for where it is... Pretty nice. I took my pup here and had a great stress relieving time. There are nice clean paths that stretch out. I ran around with my pug like an animal! Wild flowers here and there. I'm going to go on a picnic here soon because being at the waters during sun set was just relaxing. It's so close to where I live and I didn't even know about it! Now go El Monte people!
