It is bad enough that we get several power outages a year when there is no storm or heat wave. PEC also doesnt take any accountability for any damages caused by these power outages that are not due to acts of god. During the recent power outage, the GFCI in my garage was tripped which caused all of the food in the garage freezer to go bad because we were out for a few days. When i called PEC, they first refused to take accountability claiming it is due to natural causes. When i pressed them on which acts of god, the rep changed her tune and quickly told me that she can send over a claim form. When i got the email, it clearly states that PECs policy is that they are not responding for any damages caused by outages. I emailed back asking for clarification and never heard back. No stars if I had a choice. I just moved out on April 25, 2025 and I forgot to put a disconnect order and I asked for grace on having to pay for the month of May since I wasn't living there and obviously, they had proof of where I moved to as they mailed me the bills. They said, no and they do understand(What do they understand?)that everybody has $100 laying around to pay for a service that they didn't receive? They even went as far as listening to the recorded conversation I had with them just to prove me wrong that I didn't place a disconnect order. I don't know if this is a plus or not or if they felt bad but they did disconnect me on the day that I requested when they said that I have to have a 24 hour request for disconnect and it is Friday and they would have disconnected me on the following Monday(how nice of them). I looked up my area and I can only have one service provider and it is Pedernales. I know as I just got off of the phone with them and they have control over my area. I tried googling if I could have another provider but no luck because I was ready to take my business elsewhere. I guess I have to deal with this company until I die or move to another state or country. Pretty sad that the customer's right saying in no longer valid anymore. In conclusion, even with ALL that you have to do with moving, DON'T forget to put in a disconnect order with your utility companies. You will pay for it! PEC has a monopoly over the highland lakes region. It is supposed to be a coop, passing savings on the members. Instead, we have no control over rate hikes because there is no competition. They have used funds to build a grandiose building north of Marble Falls which does not benefit customers at all. They are shutting power down to businesses in Marble Falls on March 26, 2025. When I called to ask if they could perform "maintenance" at another time (like the weekend or after hours) that would not affect my medical practice (patient phone calls, emergencies, etc.), they basically told me to get over it because it was necessary. I paid a 150 deposit with the company when I first moved to the area, then I move, and I am told that I have to pay another 150 new service deposit just for a change of address. Then our lights were disconnected for not even 20 minutes paid it then was told that we would have to pay another 150 new service deposit because of the disconnection that will be added to my next bill. I am single, living in a 900 sqft apartment and I have only a few lights on. With winter here, my electric bill started climbing higher in September and higher each month as I continue to turn the thermostat down and use less electricity. Last month I reached out via chat, since they have no phone number to talk to an agent. I was told the bill increase was consistent with the time of year and weather. They gave me the tips to save energy. One they tout is to keep the thermostat at 65. In my building, if I set the thermostat to 65, I would have to wear cold weather gear under my clothes along with a jacket and a beanie. Super uncomfortable. So this month, i turned the thermostat way down to where I have to wear a jacket and beanie at all times. Used less lights. Combined laundry for less loads. Used less hot water, given I have an electric hot water heater. It should have gone down some right? Guess what? The bill went up another $30. Today I reached out to the company and told them how my electric bill went up again even though I was using less electricity. I was given the same song and dance. So I asked if they would please send somebody as a courtesy to check my meter. I was told "No"!!! They said there was no reason to send an engineer out because the higher bill was consistent with being winter and the weather, I asked again just to clarify that they do not intend to help me out. The agent wrote "Thats what I'm saying yes". I plan to write my local congressman and senator and see how they feel about PEC's deceptive billing practices and unwillingness to help their customer who are trapped into using their service. read more

Trying to pay my deceased parents bill. I sent them the death certificates and the trust that was set up naming me as the trustee, they said they could not tell me anything since I was not the executor. The whole point of a trust is to not have to go thru the court process to be named an executor. I am just trying to pay their final bill. They told me to use the automated, the automated no longer recognizes the account as active and says they can't find the account. The customer service told me they can't even tell me if my parents still owe anything. Very frustrating for someone just trying to do the right thing and settle all accounts. The death certificates and trust info was good enough for life insurance policies, the federal government, funeral homes etc. but not for the might Pedernales Electric, apparently dedicated to see just how difficult they can make things for the consumer. I have had PEC services for 40 years. I do not understand the low ratings. I have been extremely happy with their services. When we have a power outage they work tirelessly to restore services, their rates have been competitive enough until all of this solar crap invaded the space making it harder and harder for "real" services to make a profit. This company is so terrible that I am considering selling my house to move out of their service area, for which they have a monopoly. We bought solar panels, and then learned that this company disincentivizes solar power by charging us several flat fees that we have to pay regardless of kwh usage. In addition, they have lowered their buyback rate so that it is close to zero while raising their purchase rates. Because we have a loan to repay for our solar panels, we now pay much more per month than before we had solar despite the fact that we generate more power than we use. We are forced to buy power from them at high rates at night and then sell them the daytime power generated by our panels for almost nothing. Unbelievable. We feel trapped in this debt cycle, and angry that there is no protection for citizens from these kinds of business practices. read more

During the extreme cold temperatures that we have encountered in the Austin area over the last few days, PEC has failed miserably at maintaining even subpar standards of electrical service working properly in my area. In the last 24 hours, our service has been out 3x for several hours at a time. Each time they sent a crew out that seemed to just put a bandaid on the issue...only for it to fail again. In between the 3 outages (so far), the electricity was never fully restored. It has 'somewhat' worked...as the power would continue to go on and off intermittently every 10-15 min. As I am typing this now...the 3rd crew has apparently been out to restore power. My power has been back on for approx 30 min and I have had power failure 3x again in that 30 min. How is this acceptable for a service that I rely on and pay for? read more

I would give zero if I could. During ice storm of 2022 we were without electricity for more than 36 hours. Not rolling blackout, ZERO electricity. Now little ice storm on 02/01/23 and ZERO electricity for going on DAY 2 with no information. There outage site shows outage for our area on 02/01 at 4:11 AM with restoration expected 9:30 am. That was a 27 hours ago and not a truck or crew to be seen again with ZERO information and ZERO power. Complete and total incompetence with no response and no communication. All surrounding cities and communities with other electric providers have power, except PEC customers. Where are they and why do they not care that we have substandard electric grids. I look around my apartment and ponder all the things that electricity powers and I rejoice! I love electricity! So thank you, PEC, for providing this service. I don't use A/C in the summer, but I love using heat in the winter; misery and discomfort would describe me if I had no wintertime heat. Furthermore, because I don't use A/C, PEC keeps my bills down in the non-winter months! Hurray! PEC excels at service reliability; I have service 99% of the time. You cannot update your auto pay after the card has expired; you cannot update over the VRU as you get stuck in an endless loop that takes you back to the beginning, or just hangs up. Furthermore, the only way to get in touch with an actual person is to select the option for a "power outage," however, those people cannot help with your bill, or autopay corrections, etc. In this day and age there is absolutely NO reason why this should happen. They don't care because they know that if residents in Liberty Hill, TX want electricity, there aren't any other options. Their business practices are belligerent and arrogant. It would be a wonderful event if we had actual competition in this area, and then perhaps PEC would get their act together and actually come into the 21st century. read more

PEC is a continual source of frustration and irritation for me. If PEC suddenly went out of business there would be widespread cheer and celebration for a brighter future with a better electric company. When I make a payment arrangement with any other company I can expect them to withdraw the funds automatically on that date; not with PEC though. They like to punish their "members" so they'll quietly notate your account that you broke the arrangement, set you up for disconnect, and refuse to make arrangements moving forward. PEC is lame and feeble because they don't have to be great, they just have to be acceptable. They're barely acceptable. I want a competitor for PEC without having to invest in solar panels. The co-op aspect means very little to me when literally the only benefit of being a member is paying them for service. During ice and snow storms in 2021, Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) dropped power for almost 60% of their ~300,000 customers at one point. These were not the necessary "rolling blackouts" prescribed by ERCOT, but rather our neighborhood and surrounding 4,000+ households lost power for 30+ hours amidst 6 degree F temperatures. Even worse, PEC was miserable at updating news, customer support calls, outage maps, and communicating when power was restored as promised. Comparing with other neighbors who had TXU, Georgetown Utilities, and others suffered far less and reasonable outage during this weather catastrophe. In short, PEC has substandard infrastructure both for generating power and keeping customers happy. read more

We've only been here 3 days and the power has gone out 3 times already. But, the fees, e.g., $20 per month service charge, $30 per month "Delivery" charge, all this before your usage - this is absurd: we were paying around $55 per month in electricity for a three bedroom home in Southern California! Then absolutely no grace period if you're late. I read that you actually get a fine levied by them if you are late more than twice on your payment. What sort of Orwellian mind f*ck keeps this company in an apparent monopoly and gives them the audacity to say we're "owners" or "members" of a joke of a "Co-op". Perhaps the people who've lived with this all their lives would be astounded at how they've been gouged once they move somewhere else? I don't get it... We love this area and our new place, but we'll never come back after our first year is up. I have been with PEC for almost 30 years mainly because there is no other provider in my area. My bill is normally due on the 3rd of the month. Last month I had an unexpected emergency so thought I can put off making the payment until the 15th. It's only 12 days. I figured there would be a late fee or something. BIG MISTAKE! On the day I was set to make the payment they shut off my service! Never late in the past, always have paid every month and 12 days and they shut off a service that you can not live without. Now they say I have to leave a "deposit" of $150 as well as pay my regular bill. During the Great Freeze I was without power for 8 days. PEC had no info on it's web site, never answered a call. Since then I lose power at least 2 times a month for no apparent reason. The attitude of the Customer Service people is "that's the way it is". Absolutely horrible. We previously had Bandera Electric (they're owned by the same company as PEC) before moving to the Austin area and never had one single problem. We've had PEC for a few months now and have had a horrible experience from day one. For starters, their 'deposit' is required (even though we had an account in good standing with another co-op owned by their company.) and only under certain stipulations will you get it refunded. They charge an exorbitant amount just to set up your account (something like $75-$100). And, now that our lease is up and we are moving to a new house they charging a bogus $75 fee to press the button that transfers service from one house to another. There is such a thing as price gouging and this joke of a 'co-op' is definitely a perfect example. Since we moved into our current home we have had major issues receiving our mail, which includes our PEC bill. We received the bill after the due date and notified PEC, but their response was basically, 'too bad' and they tacked on a $20 late fee. I'm sorry, but $20 is RIDICULOUS. I don't have a single bill from any other company that charges more than $5 for a late fee. Due to our mail situation, and PEC's complete lack of concern for their customers, we've had to resort to automatic bill pay which is another issue in and of itself. If you have another option, which it seem like many people don't, stay far away from this crooked company. For being a 'co-op' I find it incredibly ironic how much their members actually mean to them. Is their a way to vote the crooked board members out? It needs to be done ASAP. read more

If I could give ZERO stars, I definitely would, without thinking twice! In fact, I would give -1,000,000 stars if possible. PEC is possibly the anti-christ Seriously, if EVER you consider moving to an area in which PEC is the sole provider of electric service -- Don't think twice, just don't do it. I realize that no electric utility would probably receive high ratings on Yelp, but realize that most would receive NO ratings. The fact that there is already (11?)+ NEGATIVE reviews should speak volumes as to how many customers are absolutely livid with their service! Plus, this company is NOT regulated by the PUC so you're basically stuck ranting on Yelp, Facebook, or other social media if you have an issue. ZERO recourse! Oh well, hopefully after I finish this rant I'll at least gain some satisfaction (unless of course it is removed at which point I'll probably just...well...do nothing because I CAN'T!). In fact, with my luck I'll likely get sued for slander or some other ridiculous charge. Whatever, PEC sucks and I hope the people they've crooked over the years get some form of justice at some point in time. Karma is real, right? If so, I hope to God it applies to corporations!
