Last Monday 8/25 between 1:45-2:10pm myself, a coworker, and an individual that we serve (whom is on the Autism Spectrum) came to Peet's to enjoy some treats. Our friend enjoys people watching, particularly at cafés, and the vibe started off great! He got a chocolate chip cookie. It wasn't too busy, so he easily found himself a personal table where he had kicked back, placed his feet on the chair across from himself, and made himself comfortable. My coworker and I sat at the table next to him. Michael, (an employee at Peet's) had just started his shift. After ringing up a customer, Michael deliberately walked over, placed his hands on the chair, and physically pulled the chair out from under our friend's feet. He didn't even wait for an answer, or give him an opportunity to move his feet himself. What is the problem with a calm individual, relaxing at a coffee shop, with his feet politely kicked up on a chair, enjoying a cookie? Imagine the sensory nightmare it is (especially for a human on the spectrum) to have someone come up to you, and rip a chair out from under your legs for no good reason. He was not disturbing anyone, he is well groomed, and was just enjoying his time at a coffee shop like anyone else. We have gone to dozens of coffee shops of the years, vibed the same way, and have always been met with kindness, and felt welcomed. This is my go-to coffee place. I always place a mobile order for pickup for my morning commute to work. The staff is friendly and efficient and they always remember to put the drink stopper in my coffee so there's no spillage during the ride to work. After I get my coffee sit at a table and start snack my chicken nuggets when I zip my coffee. The cashier/barista came and said "we don't let people dine here, you need to go out!", asked "why?",he answered "we don't serve lunch!". Any sense! Have been here about 5 times now, usually if I'm stopping in to Safeway or RiteAid for something. Service is friendly and it's set up to handle heavy traffic. I usually get a coconut milk latte and they do a very good job on those. I've also tried several of their baked goods which are delicious. Have always enjoyed Peet's until they stopped allowing customers to use their restrooms. When asked staff directs customers who have paid money to use chevron or a grocery stores restroom. Could someone explain how pushing their customers to use the bathroom of another business that they are not customers of is helping during a pandemic. This would cause more social interaction. I would best describe this Peets Coffee as an environment of hostility. I experienced an act of othering from one of the employees here. The Peets employee must have been getting paid $1,000 dollar an hour to feel a sense of entitlement and come up to us and say, "You are taking up too much space". Keep in mind, my friend and I were the only two women of color in this predominantly white space at the moment and sitting by the windows. While other two students (who were also women of color) were taking a break outside to enjoy their lunch -leaving their laptops and backpacks where they were sitting (the middle table). The Peets employee then comes up to us and states, " You are taking up too much space" Can you imagine? the generalizations and assumptions? At least come up to us first and ask if those were our belongings?? Our studying was interrupted because he assumed we knew each other or that they were ours. The Peets employee didn't even consider his positionality, nor the way he approached us. A half-hearted apology was mumbled from the register across the room.. Peets Coffee DO BETTER. So excited to have Peet's Coffee in Aptos. I came in today, 7/7/19, and had an okay experience. I think the baristas here are still learning to make drinks, because our drinks were not very good. Cali was not the friendliest barista and seemed like she didn't really want to be there. Gabby, while she was friendly, didn't make the best drinks. We got a hot chocolate that tasted like it was made with water instead of milk... or maybe the pitchers may have not been cleaned properly. It tasted like it had left over chai flavor. My thought is that it was made with the unsweetened powder instead of the cocoa syrup. I definitely will come back as I am sure the baristas will get better in time.
