I was searching for Chinese food on Johns Island. I decided to try Peking Gourmet. It is located in the plaza off of Main/Maybank beside KJs grocery store. This is a carryout only food place. The inside has plastic covering the tables to signal that you are not to sit there and dine in. The garbage can is roped and taped and has a sign that says this is not a garbage can...what?! The front counter is barricaded with plexiglass ,and it's hard to hear even with the small speaker built into the glass. When you pay a small opening lifts up to get your credit card and receipt. Finished food comes out of a bigger opening and then closes. They offer all the traditional Chinese food dishes as well as Hibatchi dishes. I had the Hibatchi Chicken, which was very good.The prices are reasonable, and the portions are big. The food is very good and fresh. The owners speak Spanish, which is helpful for this location. They are polite and the wait time is reasonable. Overall, the ambiance is not warm or inviting and unusually locked down even for a carryout business. But the food is good and will do if you are looking for a grab and go. read more

So, we ordered a couple dishes to take out. Currently there is no dine in allowed. We ordered shrimp and vegetables and sesame chicken. Both came with fried rice and an eggroll. We also ordered a standard item on all of our Chinese dishes, steamed dumplings. The food, I can say, was the standard of average. E order was exactly what you would expect from a strip mall Chinese place. Food was hot and plentiful. The flavor was average. It wasn't bad but it wasn't really gray either. The dumplings were a little dry. It's one of the few takeout places here on Johns Island. I guess I'll try the other place next to see if they are any better, but what should I expect for $29.75? read more

I've been to peking gourmet on a few occasions now and they can he hit or miss with their menu. Some dishes are incredible, others are meh. Portion size is always pretty massive for the price. One standard entree is easily 2 meals. And let me tell you, the very reason I'm writing this review is because the general tso's chicken was absolute fire!! They lightly batter it and must marinade it for a long time because it is so tender and delicious! Hands down the best general tso's chicken I have ever had! And I imagine the sesame chicken is the same given that they are both fried chicken dishes with sauce. read more

My kids enjoyed their chicken on a stick but that was about it. French fries had no salt. I got steamed dumplings that were hard on top like they were left over and had been microwaved, all of the food was edible. Nothing to write home about but it didn't make us sick. Closest Chinese spot to me, and I liked it. Menu didn't carry anything I wanted or many vegetarian options but I was able to find something! all in all, I'll be back and the food was well prepared / cooked. Worse Chinese food I've had in a long time. The rice was bland with very little pork, the egg roll just tasted like fried dough. The boneless ribs had a lot of a red glaze that tasted ok but the meat itself had no taste!! To top it off there was a lady arguing loudly with the cook the whole time. That should have been a sign.
