I was starving after a grueling workout. Needed something filling and healthy, so I decided to try China Taste. This restaurant is located in a Plaza on Johns Island off of Maybank Rd. There is carry out and dine in available. It appears to be mostly a carryout business as there was no one eating in the dining area, and no hostess or hostess stand in view. I called in my order of Chicken and Shrimp Hibatchi. They offer all of the typical Chinese food fare as well as soft drinks. No bar is available at this location. There is plexiglass totally shielding the counter where you order and pick up food. It doesn't really give a warm welcoming vibe and makes it a little awkward to communicate and pay as you pass your credit card through a tiny hole in the plexiglass. The food is in a multi- compartment Styrofoam container. You get a large portion, but the food tends to get sloshed around and leaks in the bag before I got it home. I've seen other places pack the meat and veggies separate from the rice and I like that better. Less messy. The food was good. They were generous with the shrimp and chicken, and it was tender. The veggies were cooked perfectly and not mushy. They only offer white rice. I would have preferred brown, but it was tasty. Overall, it's not a bad experience for a quick grab and go meal. This is not a place to sit down and have that warm ambiance and dining experience. Price is average compared to similar restaurants. There is plenty of parking in the strip plaza. read more

We just moved to the island and we have been getting a lot of takeout during the move. I saw in reviews that they were takeout only, so we ordered on Doordash. I was craving mapo tofu, so I was excited to see it on the menu. General Tso's was rated number one on Doordash, so my fiancé ordered that. The food came quickly and had a good amount of sauces and fortune cookies to go with it. The portion size on my mapo tofu was huge, I think I'll get 3 meals out of it! My fiancés General tso's had a good amount of spice and was accompanied by fried rice that he thought was ok. The mapo tofu had a nice tingly spice to it and a good amount of veggies in there. We ordered take out, ready in 20 minutes. I had the chicken wings (4 of them) with pork fried rice. I have had a lot of fried rice in my life, but this was like boiled white rice with a sort of greasy taste is the best description that I could give it. The pork was small dark cubes of ham-like pieces with a few (very few) onion pieces softly cooked. The chicken had dark bones, which I surmise was previously frozen, which in these times was not unusual. Pretty decent Chinese food, exactly what you should expect for a normal Chinese take-out spot. I have tried the hibachi which I was not a fan of but the Chinese food itself is good. Tried and true favorites are the crab rangoons (aka cheese wontons), Sesame chicken (although I wish their combo came with broccoli in addition to the rice) and egg drop soup. When I hate the food I will rarely care enough to write a review but this was by far the worst takeout chinese food I have ever consumed. Do not order this. One they got my order wrong, the beef here is inedible and cAnt be chewed through. The sesame chicken was so soggy and I ate it maybe 10 minutes after it was cooked. The pork fried rice tasted burnt? We use this place regularly and usually pick dinner up. We used Grubhub this time and were pleased with their service too. We ordered Shrimp w/ Cashew nuts(69) and General Tsos Chicken (S6) and Fried Chicken wings . All were excellent. The shrimp w/ cashew nuts came with white rice and the vegetables were water chestnuts/ carrots/ bokchoy/ celery mini corn , I call the sauce Chinese gravy. The shrimp and Chinese vegetables is a better choice if the vegetable mix above isn't your cup of tea. The General Tsos Chicken was as expected sweet with an occasional hot bite with spicy pepper in sauce. You get a few broccoli crowns with this dish. The Fried Chicken wings are fried to perfection. Just a heads up they are whole wings tip and all. Some Chinese Restaurants just serve 1st. and second joint attached only. The sweet and sour sauce ordered extra makes a good wing dipping sauce.
