This is by far my favorite golf courses in the city. Free golf cart with purchase! Best Chipping area in the city! I live in queens and happily pay the toll to be here, I average about 15 rounds at this course yearly. So it brings me great displeasure and guilt in writing that this establishments is completely and utterly uninhabitable for the summer months of June-September due to its life threatening mosquito problem. Called and asked if they would be open. They said they were. We booked a time with a cart. Showed up, and they said they were wrapping up and going home. Wouldn't give a refund; only said they could move the tee time and said that it had to be within a week. This didn't work for us as we weren't going to be here the next weekend and we all work during the week. Aside from the wasted time, we spent money getting here and everything. The Split Rock course is in really nice condition and despite the wait, the staff had a good system in place to handle start times. Having said that, there are 3-4 holes that are invested with mosquitoes and the overall course has a general issue with mosquitoes. Every person in our group has a picture of their backs littered with mosquito bites after we played our round yesterday. Until management finds a way to take care of the issue (which seems like it's been somewhat of an issue for years), I don't see myself playing here again. It's just not worth fighting through for 4+ hours and then not being able to sleep that night because of the constant itching from the bites. Very solid course but management needs to figure out the mosquito issue as soon as possible. read more

I've been playing at Pelham Bay for over a decade, but this was by far the most disappointing experience. My group had a confirmed 6:20 AM tee time booked through GolfNow. After checking in and getting our carts, we were immediately questioned at the first tee by an attendant who dismissed our reservation, saying, "You can't be using those websites." We were told to play best ball before even starting, then pressured to speed up--even though we were directly behind the group ahead the entire time. Staff ignored that group completely but continued to single us out. A ranger even told us to hit into them and just yell "fore," which is both dangerous and completely inappropriate. This felt like targeted harassment. The tone from staff was dismissive and hostile from the start. As longtime, respectful players, we expected better. Truly unacceptable behavior. If I could give it 0 stars I would. read more

Looks like the events here have great reviews but the golf course is trash. I would think it'd be the other way around since this is primarily a golf course. I attended a birthday celebration here. Everything was really beautiful! Picturesque views and good service. My only complaint is that the bathroom is in the cocktail area so it's a little far from the reception area. read more

We were lucky enough to come here to help celebrate the wedding of a very good friend of ours. The valet was great and I loved that they have a ramp at the entrance for wheelchairs and strollers. The place is lovely. Their ceremony was beautiful with a gorgeous backdrop on the outside patio, overlooking the immaculate golf grounds. After the ceremony we enjoyed cocktail hour and their reception both inside and outside which I think was a great idea. The weather was perfect at the end of June so we were comfortable. The food was really good at the cocktail hour. Unfortunately, for the sit down dinner our table and other tables waited for what seemed like, forever, for our mains and everyone's steak was the wrong temperature. It was like chewing on a rubber toy but rather than complain, we just ate because no one wanted to wait for a do-over. On the upside, their cake was awesome and the bartenders were great. However the pace of play was so slow that the group behind us thought it was us causing the backup - we let them play through and ended up waiting for that group to finish each hole! If you come here and plan to play be prepared to be out on the course for about 5 hours. read more

WOW! What an absolute clown show this course is. My buddy and I had a tee time at 9am. We wake up and it is raining. Not a little bit... it's raining a lot. So he calls the course and they assure us that they are sending out golfers rain or shine. So we go because I am dying to play golf after not being able to due to social events the prior two weekends. We drive the 40 minutes or so from lower manhattan and arrive. It's still raining, so from our car we call again to confirm and YEP, they are sending out golfers they say. Again, it's raining. Any reasonable person who isn't a psycho completely hellbent on golfing no matter what would not even try. But we do. We are soaked by the time we get the clubs up to the club house. I pay the man his money. He hands me a starter ticket. It seems that despite the insane amount of rain, no one here is going to tell us no. So we continue onward. We get a cart from the cart troll, aka "Jeep Moron", aka the guy sitting in his car doing nothing who tells me to take any cart I want. None of these have a cover for the clubs once strapped to the cart and they are all gross and poorly maintained. We take the least junky one and embark on what is shaping up to be a ridiculous attempt at 18 in rain that simply will not stop. We drive to the first tee. We see a tall guy standing at the halfway house we flags us down. We drive over, each knowing what is about to happen. This guy tells us nope, you're not golfing in this -- and let's be clear, it's not an unreasonable decision, it's raining hard. But MY GOD. THIS is why we called before either of us had left home; THIS is why we called from the parking lot before we got soaked. The rain was not knew; it had been raining the whole time; the fact they let us get THAT FAR and that soaked before saying no tells me that all they cared about was getting us to PAY and they trying to pass off a rain check as our remedy instead of a refund. The charge has been challenged and they won't be paid, but damn this is top notch incompetence -- how the pro shop and the starter are not talking is beyond me and I'll never golf this terribly maintained course again. read more

I attended and event this weekend at Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf course. The location is beautiful. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The event had pass hors d'oeuvres which were the star of the show! Crack cakes, spring rolls, short ribs, chicken cordon blue balls, chicken and lemongrass dumplings... like everything was delicious. Our meal after was served buffet style which was ok.. I honestly could've just eaten the appetizers all night! read more

Unless you're looking to play in a mosquitoes nest for 4 hours, don't even think about playing here. I don't mind a few big bites here and there but I woke up the next morning with my ankles swollen like softballs and my entire body covered in bites. The course in pretty rough shape - the greens are in the best shape of everything, which makes it playable. $65 pp with cart and it was pretty quick (which I've heard is not the case generally). The mosquitos are really awful (like hoards of them) - not sure if that was an isolated incident or now. A good spot to bring a bunch of beer with some buddies who don't take golf too seriously. Was here on Saturday and it took our group 7 hours to play a round of 18. Many holes we had to wait 15 minutes before our tee shots. Absolutely terrible and inexcusable. Guessing this place overbooked their tee times. Also, at the turn the game outdoor grill was closed for some reason so we went in the club house to get hot dogs (quickest food to make) and they took 20 minutes. All around a very bad experience. I played here a few times a few years ago and had no complaints - must be new management or something. read more

I was never blessed with natural ability for golf, but I do love the sport. Although I have played here about 5 times, I will enlighten you about my most memorable round at Split Rock this past summer. I used nycteetimes.com and reserved a morning tee time. Upon arrival, I paid a $2 parking fee and met my 3 companions. I walked to clubhouse and checked in. The signin and payment part doesn't happen until they call your name on the PA system. The Split Rock course was backed up at least a 1/2 hour. At hole #1, after we teed off, light rain poured, but we played through it. At #5, there was slight backup, but we finished the hole. It poured again. This time it was heavy, so we waited an hour under trees. The foursome behind us did the same. We continued playing and realized many golfers had left. The greens were soaked. Putting was terrible. By this my boxers and socks were wet. Imagine the discomfort, yet we decided to continue. At #8, we started the hole, and it poured again. Now my colleagues were feeling depressed. We already passed 5 holes so we did not qualify for a raincheck for our greens fees. We decided to forget it and head home. As we passed #9, we saw the snack bar so we stopped for a hot dog and beer. We remained quiet and yet we had the look of disgust on our faces. What a waste of money. The weather miraculously cleared up, so we drove back to hole #8 and played it through. By hole #11, the sun came out and stayed out. My undergarments were still wet, but the game continued. A lot of golfers left at the first sight of inclement weather (maybe they had plans and only scheduled a 4-5 hour window to play golf). We were there for a while. Yes 7 hours. I understand, we paid with our valuable time, but this was the strangest yet most memorable golf experience to date. My highlights for me were 3 bogeys in the back nine. You can imagine the double and trip bogeys, along with my double par holes. The Good: + Nice golf course in the Bronx (see photos), part of the largest park in NYC (yes, Pelham Bay Park is larger than Central Park) + Split Rock is the better of the two courses, but Pelham is wider. + (for round plus cart) $70 for non-residents, $64 for residents (get the ny golfers club card; it's kind of like a county card, but it doesnt have your photo) + There is a pitching and chipping area where I can practice for free. + At the snack bar (you encounter it at Split Rock holes #1 and #9), there is a special where if you buy 5 of the same beer, you get the 6th free. The Bad: - Not all of the yardage signs are up (missing) - Live game may be wandering on the course, ie on the green. - No driving range. - Snack bar and cart girl accept cash only. The Ugly: -- Finding droppings on the green. Eek. -- Delays will back you up, thanks to walkers. People lose their golf balls and take forever to move on. To the sh-tty golfers, bring a lot of balls and maintain pace with the players ahead. I do. Overall it is a must see/to do in Pelham Bay park/the Bronx. People are totally right with the reviews, with the long wait time. We had to wait more than 40 minutes before we started, and some group of guys tried to cut us off on the first hole. That was a mess there. There's only a few things I liked about this course. 1. The inside staff was nice 2. The clubs were super nice rentals brand new ones. I've rented constantly and these were the nicest. 3. The golf clubs were prettier. The fairway wasn't that meh, a lot of patches and beer bottles galore. Didn't people hear about throwing away garbage? And so many twigs! Other than that, mehh. We kept waiting for people ahead of us, and some guy comes up to my group and starts flipping out at us, says we're taking too long, while the idiot didn't realize we were waiting for the group in front of us, and so many people kept asking us to play through, NO BITCH WAIT YOUR TURN, you act like your a pro while your ball goes into the rough and goes missing for a while. And the girl who drives the cart around with food, please have a better selection, this golf course isn't that poor, they can afford more than snickers and doritos. And COFFEE!! Horrible pro shop rep-- doesn't answer phone claims to be too busy. I get there no line. Horrible cart system- grab and go not the slightest bit organized- creates a backup on hole one. The fairways were trash, more like the rough on the entire course. Greens were okay. Only positive here was a nice gentleman collecting tickets at tee 1. I also am not fond of the crunch of people ahead of and behind you. Just not a good system here- courses aren't good. read more

A - ok folks. This review is based on a Special Event I attended at the golf club. I adored the tent space and the chandeliers. It have such a classy touch! The up lighting was good too and they had Chivari chairs and good table setting presentation as well as the food presentation. I think the space could accommodate 100 ppl with plenty of space and a big dance floor. The food: I had the prime rib - very moist and tender. I really liked it. The salmon - I was told was dry and overlooked. The chicken - I was told was just chicken. The warm chocolate chip cookies were also delish at first but has a weird after-taste. I still ate it. Lol. The waiters try to be "white glove" waiters but it's still apparent that they are all amateurs and just need more training. LOL. Overall, I enjoyed my time celebrating!! Cheers!! read more

Course in awful shape. Drainage is broken so water stagnates everywhere, resulting in awful insect bites. Several bunkers and fairways suffer from this. See example photo. Def not worth the $. Two stars since the employees at the front desk and Grill are great and do their best. read more

Played split rock golf course. Split rock is a long, demanding course even for low handicaps. The blue tees stretch to almost 6800 and most fairways are narrow and have some slope, and any miss into the trees is a lost ball. For the price, Split Rock is the best course you can get for your money in NYC. The only reason i am giving it 4 stars is because the course is absolutely infested with mosquitoes. BRING BUG SPRAY!!!!!!!! They tried to sell me bug spray for $12 in the pro shop because they know you get eaten without it, and they use that to their advantage. With bug spray, this course is fun and I will come back again soon. read more

I played Split Rock this past Saturday. It was perhaps the worst golf experience that I have ever had. To begin with, the onslaught of mosquitoes was unbearable they were everywhere especially while you were trying to drive the cart, a warning would have been nice. The course itself looks like it hadn't been maintained in a at least a year. The tee boxes, the fairways were in terrible condition. The sand traps were an abomination , in that there was no sand to speak of and weeds were growing out of the dirt. They should be ashamed of themselves charging $75 to play this course. read more

I will begin by stating the positives - the greens and fairways are actually in really good shape, especially given the course was closed for a long period of time during the ongoing pandemic. For that reason, I did not have a problem with the fact that the sand bunkers throughout the course were in terrible, unplayable shape. However, I would strongly urge everyone to consider avoiding the course for the foreseeable future. They have not sprayed the course for bugs in forever. My group -- and the groups surrounding us -- were attacked throughout their round by hundreds of mosquitos. Even our own bug spray was not enough to ward off the bugs. As a result, we wound up with bug bits all over our bodies, head to toe. The bite marks have not remained all over my legs and back despite it being 48 hours later. When we reported this to the crew at the end of our round, it was simply shrugged off. The parks department's laissez faire approach to this dangerous condition was unacceptable, especially considering 18 holes with a cart on this course costs about $75. Again, STAY AWAY FROM THIS COURSE UNTIL THEY ADDRESS THE MOSQUITOS or else your health could be adversely affected. read more

I had my wedding at Pelham Split Rock 8/14/2016. I booked my date in October 2015. We were sold an experience of a lifetime. That's really not what we got. We were told our guests would be met with a glass of champagne, they weren't. We were told servers would be passing around h'dorves they didn't . Our DJ was told a speaker for the outside was available. Luckily he brought an additional speaker or there wouldn't have been sound for the ceremony. There was a lot of confusion as to who should que the bridal party for the ceremony. We were left to come up with a strategy. There were several things promised and not delivered. Wow! I attended an outdoor wedding reception in mid-October this year. I was quite impressed by the way the reception felt personalized. From the moment I walked into the mansion as it seemed, I was speechless. It felt as if I had walked into the home of the new couple which had photos of the bride, groom, their family and friends. The lounge area was beautifully furnished and perfect for cocktail hour. The remainder of the reception was held outdoors under a white tent which had a dance floor. I did not know the Bronx had such hidden secrets. I must say it was a pain to walk to and from the parking lot. Ladies, I recommend carrying a pair of flats with you. The pathways are difficult to walk on with heels and as far as I saw, there was no valet parking either. The food was delicious. We had a really great time and took plenty of photos. Very lovely place but easy to miss. They need signage along the route. A few of us followed the numbers and drove in the wrong direction, but eventually figured it out. read more

This place has the most RUDE pro shop staff of all time. Truly a nightmare. We asked a very basic general question and the older man working there wouldnt answer- was over the top rude- and aggressive. We have had this experience both times playing here. I was told to stop speaking by this man when inquiring about our tee time. HORRIFIC. Avoid this course at all costs- not worth it. There are actually 2 courses here...the Split Rock layout, which is shorter but nicer. And the Pelham Course, which is longer but not quite as nice. I would label this "urban golf." You're going to see things you dont normally see on a golf course...broken beer bottles, people in sweatpants. I saw a guy in a cowboy hat playing, and also a guy in a full-on velour track suit. It was $62 for 18 holes on a Sunday (for NY residents) which isnt all that bad. I played it on a blustery March day and only had the patience to get through 9 holes. I can only imagine the mind-numbing backups that occur here during the high season (especially on the weekends). Bottom line: If you are a hacker and just want to go have some fun with your buddies and drink a case of Busch Light, then this course is probably a great pick. If you're a more serious golfer who hates having...to wait....on every...single....shot....then i wouldnt touch this place with a 10-foot pole. Im not trying to sound snobby, but theres a limit as to what makes a golf round enjoyable. The only time i might go back here is for an emergency 9 on a weekday. read more

Sorry Golfers, this review is about my wedding that I was fortunate enough to have here. If you're planning a wedding, this should get top consideration. We spoke to Tammy, the events coordinator. She was nice and honest about the price and planning. Just plan ahead with her as she's always busy. The maitre d's were Victor, and John. They were fantastic in planning, setting up, and decorating. They went above and beyond. All my guests said the wedding was very well organized, and I have them to thank. Kelly did a great job assisting my wife as well. All the vendors they recommended did a great Job. All except the valet service, which I will inform split rock about later. The food that was served was excellent. I went with the prime rib, chicken Marsala, and Salmon for the main courses. All were great. I heard from a couple of guests that the Salmon was exceptional. The wedding cake was included in the price and there vendor is Conti's on Morris Park Avenue. I have to give Conti's a separate excellent review. The cake came out way better than expected and was delicious. They also do other benefits and functions besides weddings. My wife and I will be visiting the bar they have set up on the right hand side. Bottom line is that you won't find this type of service anywhere else. If you want your wedding more personalized than the catering halls that churn out wedding after wedding, than go with Split Rock. read more

This place is not interested in you at all. All they want is your green fee. Tee times are a joke. You will wait 30-60 minutes to tee off. The round will be 5-6 hours depending on how many people thay can squeeze on to the course. Try complaining to anyone and the refrain is the same - I just work here. Yesterday, I had a tee time for 9:45 and I didn't get off the course until after 4:00. Its nearly impossible to play golf when you are waiting on every tee and fairway. The back nine plays a little quicker because people eventually quit. Drive 30-60 minutes to Westchester, LI or NJ for a better experience. read more

Attended my friend's wedding here over Memorial Day Weekend and had a great time! It's not accessible by public transportation so you will have to hail a taxi once you get off the Metro North or 6 train at Pelham Bay Parkway, but its only a 10 minute ride so it's not too bad. The venue itself is shared with a golf course so that's why I am only giving them 3 stars; during and after the ceremony there were two men adjacent to the gazebo playing golf and the guests and I were thinking how livid the bride would be had the golf ball flew over into our area. Other than that the venue is clean and spacious and offered good photo ops for the guests. The hors d'ouevres could have been better but the five hour open bar definitely made up for it! For the reception, guests were ushered into a giant tent and given menus to order from. I went with the prime rib and made a TERRIBLE mistake! Our waiter Edward was friendly and efficient and told me they only had three options, those being rare, medium or well-done but nothing in between (no medium-rare) so I went with rare. When my prime rib came, it was beyond well-done and tasted like a slab of defrosted meat that they tossed into microwave. It was really inedible so I just gobbled up the side up the side of potatoes and veggies. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING! I hope the other options on the menu tasted better than the prime rib. Here's what I originally wrote in my notes: Amateur hour poor service Bad coordination Food came out late for different tables I still remember all of this very clearly. It seemed like they were not very well organized and didn't know how to run a large event like a wedding. Many of the wait staff were young and not trained well.
