My family had a very disappointing experience with Pelican Ridge Post Acute. Don't let the name or location lead you to expect a luxury facility. In our experience, the building felt dated, and communication with staff was often difficult. Reaching the right person for updates was frustrating and added stress during an already challenging time. My mother was admitted with the goal of rebuilding her strength and regaining her ability to walk. She was motivated and willing to do the work. After more than three weeks at the facility, including an extended stay, she left in significantly worse condition than our family had hoped. Within two days of discharge, she required emergency medical care. From our perspective, she appeared dehydrated, undernourished, and far weaker than when she arrived. While every patient's situation is different, our family believes the care she received did not help her achieve the rehabilitation goals that brought her there. Sadly, she never fully recovered and later passed away. This was our experience, and I encourage families researching post-acute care options to ask detailed questions, visit facilities in person, and carefully consider all available choices before making a decision read more

The facility is disgusting. Was transferred to this facility from Hoag Hospital via ambulance transport, we got into the facility and the reception area and outer area was clean and renovated. Was then transferred to a room in a wing that had no air conditioning and the halls were crowded with residence. The paramedics kept apologizing to me about how awful this place was. I was then moved to another room that was filthy bed was on the ground. Bed was dirty had holes in the sheets. There was garbage beside the bed like somebody had just been removed and they didn't clean the remote didn't work. It looked like a homeless shelter on Skid Row. I was told by the charge nurse that they had seven admissions that day and they couldn't do anything about the room the filth until the following day. This facility needs to be inspected behind the reception area and look into the rooms and the care given to these patients. I'm mortified. This should not be in is allowed , especially if Medicare is paying for this. I left the facility immediately. read more

Horrible horrible place if I could rate 0 I would my dad was checked in, in January for a foot injury I let staff know multiple times that the buzzer to call for help didn't work my dad would call me to complain about it and he would say that he would have to pull his wheel chair and put pressure on his foot just to use the restroom my dad had a heart monitor due to a previous heart attack, I had contacted the company that provided the heart monitor usually what it does it beeps when it notices a sudden change or when he is going to get another heart attack I finally received the information yesterday after he passed away in this facility back in February stating that his heart monitor was beeping loud for about 5 mins before he went into cardiac arrest I could only imagine what my dad was feeling in his last moments probably begging for a staff to help or something and being ignored. When He passed away I asked nurses what had happened they mention they took immediate action but as soon as I got the facility around midnight I'm walking down the hall packing my fathers belonging when I see two of the staff sleeping against their carts I was so upset and I knew immediately that these patients in this facility are poorly taken care of. Please take the time to look for a different facility I was desperate and ignored the bad reviews but I wish I didn't. Don't make the same mistake I made. read more

This is a terrible facility. I would not recommend sending a loved one here. Lawrence the administrator does not care about what goes on day to day and does not take any accountability for his staff and the operations of the facility. Maria is a terrible nurse. I am not even sure if she is an actual nurse. She goes against family wishes and does not care about the patients here. She does whatever she can to make her job easier, like over medicating patients. Terrible place, they don't clean and didn't change our family members clothes! I had to stay here for 5 weeks after a surgery I had. The facility is so clean. There is no smell from any rooms. Well cleaned everyday. The staff are amazing. I especially need to call out Lorena Infante. I felt so taken care of by her. My husband called her my guardian Angel. She always went above and beyond. read more

The website looks great. That's the ONLY thing that was great. Once my Mom was admitted, she did not receive the care promised. The staff made remarks about patients, and promises of medication on time were not fulfilled. You have to have a family member to advocate for your loved one's needs or they often get unmet. We even had to advocate care for my Mom's roommate. The quality of care was poor. Four patients were assigned one bathroom, which was not sanitary. There were patients that had been there 2 years! It was NOT what we had hoped for in acute care and rehab after my Mom's shoulder replacement surgery. There is no security at the door and it is open 24 hours. Anyone could enter! The location (right next to Hoag hospital) and the name/website "Pelican Ridge" made for a very good advertisement, but not a good reality. We got my Mom out as soon as we could. One week was more than she could handle. So sad. Those who are most vulnerable should be treated with compassion and care. I advise you to NOT send your family member there! read more

My mom was at Pelican for 3 weeks due to a partial hip replacement. The care she received by the very tentative CNAs, physical therapists, and Nurses was great! It was hard to trust my mom's well being away from her home, but after being there and seeing how tentative they were, I felt she was safe. A very special thanks to those CNAs that do so much for patients!! Lorena, Sujey, and Katty, you are wonderful and very much appreciated! Thank you for being so kind and caring! Nurses are always super busy but Laura, Gabby, and Yvonn went out of their way to assist any way they could. The activities team, especially Blanca, who made my mom smile all the time. My mom loved going activities area! Melissa, Jaime, and Jacky thank you for helping me through all of that process and answering all those questions I had. If it were possible to give Zero 's, I would. I filed a formal investigation into Pelican Ridge (PR) with the health department. My mother was transferred to PR Dec 8. I rec'd a call the following morning between 8-9 a.m. saying they need questions answered for her intake. (She was admitted 6pm the night before) I was told Mom wasn't able to answer questions. I said, "Is she just tired?" "Probably." I showed up at 11 a.m. having brought my mother's belongings only to find her lying lifeless in the bed and the right side of her face drooping. I immediately call a nurse in and said, "What's wrong with my mom!? She responds, "Isn't this her baseline?" I said, "No! She was talking, eating and sitting up yesterday! And it appears she had another stroke now on her right side." I was shocked they didn't realize this new stroke was on her right side and affecting her face. The previous was on the left side affecting her arm and leg. The nurse ran and got the director of nursing, Teesha, (conveniently, she is no longer there) She comes into the room and says the same, "Isn't this her baseline? While pointing at my mom's lifeless body. Teesha immediately looking panicked, said, "Call 911!" Unbelievable! Did anyone read the discharge notes from the hospital saying the patient was sitting up, talking and eating? Could they not see the new stroke was on her right side instead of the left? How long had she been lying there completely unresponsive? What if i had not shown up? So many unanswered questions. I tried calling Pelican Ridge 15 times in the course of a week. I left several messages. I was treated rudely. Put on hold indefinitely. Called back several times within minutes and was then told the director of nursing, Teesha was out (the first 3 calls i wasn't told that, but put on the never ending hold. ) I then asked for the administrator, also gone. I said, "Who is running the place?" I never received a call back from anyone. So, in the reviews when they say to leave your contact for them to call you back. It's not happening. Today the investigator for the health department calls me and just like 99% of the investigations done at Pelican Ridge, the complaint was unsubstantiated. Of course she didn't use that term, but they had no findings. Nothing will be done. It appears, everyone there lined their stories up to protect themselves. The CNA told the investigator that she told me, "When I checked on her in the morning, she didn't want breakfast." She never said anything about breakfast to me. She also told the investigator she had checked on my mom 1/2 hr before I showed up (10:30 a.m. and she was fine.) So, mom had the stroke in that half hour? (Remember, she was unable to talk between 8-9 when the intake person wanted to an her questions) Seems the investigator was given canned responses from the staff. PT, OT, Director of Nursing, CNA ‍ It appears as if they all coordinated their stories to protect themselves ‍ My mother passed away soon after. The neglect from the Pelican Ridge staff is criminal. If you love your family member. Do not allow them to be taken here. read more

Passive aggressive administrator. Had a rash. Took 39 hours to get medicine which required a shower only to be told I had to wait 2 more days to use it until my scheduled shower day. Only 2 showers a week. No security. Anyone can co.e and go with out question. Was gone for 5 hours for post op appointment with surgeon. No one asked where I was. Toilet bowls stained. Toilet seat cover smaller than toilet bowl. "Doctor" visits (4 in 8 days ranged from 10 seconds to 20 seconds. I timed each visit. A family member had to stay here and was constantly ignored and not cleaned. Avoid this place if you can the CNA employees will always say they're going on lunch in times of need and do the bare minimum. Care manager needs to be fired, multiple emails and reaching out but never heard back. The care manager delayed many of the essential things we needed such as a psych consult. Finally got out of this horrible place and as we are getting ready to go I overheard some employees cheering happily as they had multiple discharges that morning and talking about how they couldn't wait to get rid of patients. They talked rudely about my family member and were very unprofessional. Please save yourself from checking in someone here, take them somewhere else where they will be cared for and hopefully get better. read more

Pelican Ridge Post Acute is amazing! Lorena is so kind and helpful with my father. She is always very uplifting and makes him act independent instead of neglecting him or doing everything for him. I find that in most recovery/nursing homes the nurses either do everything or nothing for the patient. However here they are uplifting and find a happy medium. Luis has also been very informative and assistive with my father. He monitors him well and gets things done. Victoria is also a pleasure to have around my father. She is very hands on and efficient. Both my mother-in-law and now a friend have stayed here and on both occasions , the care has been wonderful. The place is updated, clean , and on the occasions when I visited ( everyday when my mother in law lived there ) , the place did not smell . It's literally a block or two from Hoag , a top - ranked hospital. I feel that they treat its residents like family, from what I have seen. I don't know about other stations or wings, but on both occasions , the team at Station 1 have been great. Additionally, the Activities Director keeps the residents active with regular activities that seem to be enjoyed by those who attend. It's a very friendly team I would recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a facility that offers the care that Pelican Ridge offers. read more

My mom was recently there for recovery. The CNA I had was really rude with a nasty attitude. Her name is seala. Asking for help felt like you were asking her for too much. The eye roll and attitude was bad. If you love your love ones do reconsider that place. They should be there to help not feel like you begging someone. read more

This facility is clean and recently refurbished. However, as with most care facilities, the staff is spread very thin and the patients/residents are not given much space (a typical semi-private room barely has space for two beds, two bedside tables and maybe a visitor chair if you're lucky.) If you want your loved one properly cared for, create a good relationship with key staff and be present as often as possible. A lot can be said for close surveillance and follow-up. My Brother in Law's care was better than I had expected for someone on Medicare and without assets because we followed the above advice. read more

Extremely abusive and neglectful here. Your loved one will leave in worse condition than arrived- if they are still alive that is. They can justify their abuse and severe neglect all they'd like. Medical and nursing boards say otherwise and I highly advise anyone else to open complaints with the proper boards so the nurses and Drs can either find different jobs or stop neglecting doing theirs. I encourage anyone who's abused or neglected here to also contact the California department of health - file a complaint online. This place is also being looked into for their severe insurance fraud- billing insurance and getting paid for a month lying to insurance claiming a patient is in their care when they have been discharged going on a month. While pelican ridge collects the $$$. Please make sure you report to the appropriate authorities to ensure this place ceases their abuse, intentional neglect , and insurance fraud. Also I did contact DIRECTLY their chief medical officer on his cell phone and on fb. dr fariborz shams, chief medical officer refused to communicate regarding the neglect and abuse (which should tell you all you need to know) and further lied on recorded phone call admitting his identity while lying saying he wasn't affiliated with pelican ridge acute. read more

DO NOT send your loved ones to this post, acute rehab. First, when I visited the rehab, there was a patient sitting outside on the patio who told me he had Covid. I wasn't really concerned that they didn't have Covid protocols at the time. However, my mother entered the facility. I got her settled, and the next day she had extreme pain instead of addressing the pain they overmedicated her the next day when I arrived she still had some pain so I had to be the one to request labs by the following day she was in the ER and again I had to be the one to come and pick her up and take her to the ER the night nurse was just going to medicate her. Turns out she had an obstruction and abscess and could've died in their care. One night CNA/nurse named Araceli ignored her multiple request for help. she was in so much pain. She walked herself up to the counter twice with no socks on and a walker . Another nurse told her to walk herself if she wanted to go walking. If it wasn't for my quick action, she wouldn't be with us today so whatever you do do not go here. I will say the day nurses at station one were very sweet but again no medical attention to her pain. Your family member will lay in bed in pain without help. read more

I have never been able to speak with a doctor, they have refused to transfer medical information to a new facility. Pelican Ridge Post Acute provided the most amazing care for my brother who was admitted after two weeks in the hospital and could barely move. They provided outstanding nursing and PT care. The social worker, Jackie kept me informed and arranged for a smooth transition home after 4 weeks. My brother mentioned Teresa especially for providing amazing care. Early on he was too weak to reach the phone and I would call the nursing station and someone would immediately go to his room and make sure that he could answer. I live out of state and was so grateful he was in such good hands. Highly recommend for anyone in need of such services. read more

Posting on behalf of my mother: I have been a patient at Pelican Ridge for approximately three months. The only thing I can say about this facility is it is impeccably clean. You see one scratch on the wall, and it is immediately painted. I wish they would take as much care of their patients. Let me explain what they did for Christmas for the patients. Absolutely nothing. We got a Christmas card with a Pelican Ridge stamp on it and a stale candy cane. That was it. Nothing special for the day. Very disappointing. I sat in my own feces for an hour before I got changed. I should give a shout-out to certain CNAs, Franchesca, Daniel, and Yuri. Also, a very special nurse named Rosa, who gets to know her patients thoroughly. I should mention the food here. I asked the kitchen staff to please add soup to my lunch and dinner, as I like soup, but please, no clam chowder. For the past two months, they have brought me chicken noodle soup every lunch and every dinner. No matter how many times I ask for vegetable soup or something else, I still get chicken noodle soup for two months every lunch and dinner. I was supposed to leave here on Dec. 31, but the case manager didn't have the information, so I ended up staying an extra three days, for which they charged me $700. So I had to spend the next month here. I am supposed to leave in two days. The case manager kept telling me she would call me or come to my room, and within a month, she had done neither. So I called the place that I am supposed to be going to and verified everything with them. I will leave in two days, but with no help from the manager at Pelican Ridge. read more

It is located in Newport Beach and they provide the best care for their residents and have very loving and compassionate employees. I would recommend Pelican Ridge to everyone. Absolutely ABUSIVE AND HORRIBLE! ESPECIALLY the administrator and the woman in charge of social services! The CNA's wouldn't wear gloves there was urine on the floor. They never checked on patients and when they did, they wouldn't do anything or even put on gloves! My mother was in their skilled nursing facility and the neglect was disgusting! My loved one was moved here from Hoag on a Wednesday evening for a private room. They put him in a double and said he'd be moved to a single in the morning. He was awakened Thursday morning at 6:a.m. by his roommate's blasting TV. The roommate had been in that bed for a year. My loved one was supposed to get physical therapy and get home in a few days or a week. He was there in the double room until Saturday, spent his time in bed, except for brief physical therapy in the morning. They didn't get him up and dressed or give him a tooth brush; he had one shower. Staff was unresponsive. We visited and made requests but nothing changed. He signed out on Saturday, never got a single room. Went home with a caregiver instead. Dreadful experience. read more

The only thing nice I can say about this place is the therapy staff is wonderful. Neglect is the norm. I had to beg the staff repeatedly for two days to get my husband back to the hospital, as he was ice cold and begging for help. When they finally DID agree to send him, they called a private ambulance rather than 911, which took close to an hour to stIt's my understanding that if it's to a point they need to call 911, then they get zinged so they try to avoid it. He was immediately placed in ICU where his core body temperature was 86 degrees and he required a blood transfusion. He never made it out and subsequently, he died. He was fine on Saturday and dead by Thursday .When I contacted them to get his phone, so I could retrieve his contacts, recordings, photos, etc, it was no where to be found. Begged them to search for it but it was never found or returned. It was an awful experience. On three occasions I walked in and found them about to give him insulin. He wasn't diabetic!! Very poor management and nursing staff seem to be more interested in being on their phones. Please do not ask me to call to discuss further. I've emailed half a dozen times and I've called...nothing. Unless your loved one only requires therapy, this is NOT the place for professional medical treatment. Unless you have made funeral arrangements. Still believe he would be alive today had he been at a different facility. It's been a year. Still never returned his phone and still convinced PR had a big play in his passing read more

They deleted somehow, my last review, but that's OK because I'll be happy to post another one long story short my mother is a stroke victim and caught Covid. She had to be here for several days in the interm. I went immediately there after the Covid situation was remedied and she kept complaining she couldn't walk she was in pain etc. The idiot nursing staff said she was having "ambulatory issues". I took her to her room and took off her clothes and found this. I don't think she had been changed in four days. If you think this looks bad, you should've seen the front. I flipped out. I called the police and I admitted her immediately to Hoag Hospital, where m said they are constantly seeing these types of situations from this abysmal facility. I have an ombudsman involved and the police. Absolutely horrendous. How are they still in business is anybody's guess read more

So the room had 2 with Covid and one that did not. Of course the one without Covid got it a couple days later. Just an awful experience. Today was the last I could take of Pelican Ridge Acute Rehab in Newport Beach , CA! Last night a CNA sarcastically stated, "You want your phone charger, (phone charger no where he could reach it), you're going to die here!". This morning 12/24/22, my husband was asking to be taken to the bathroom, he needed to have bowel movement. He had been left from morning after lunch on wheelchair till 2 pm! He was soiled and CNA was upset bc he needed a shower. CNA took him for shower. Husband is on blood thinners but was left w wounds without attention for hours. Blood dripping on neck for hours until I took him home! Believe me, this place is from hell! As he was being discharged, a young man was upset bc his mother had gone into a diabetic coma and 911 had to be called! As one walks the halls, you can hear residents crying out for help and they are ignored! DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONE TO THIS FACILITY, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!
