OMG, this was one tasty burger! It was SO juicy, and all the toppings were super fresh and crisp! No need to douse it with extra condiments, as it was perfect the way it was! The side of fries were tasty, hot out of the fryer, and a great pairing with the burger. You can opt for other sides, too, such as Route 11 Virginia chips or a garden salad with vinaigrette. Staff here are so welcoming, friendly, and kind - once you order up at the counter, they'll give you a number and your order is brought out to you. Pendulum, Pendulum, Pendulum. Where do I start? Back in 2015 (maybe?) we moved to Norfolk and obviously needed to find a butcher (doesn't everyone do this?!). My husband grew up on a dairy farm and is pretty connected with making sure we consume thoughtful, well sourced meat products. I, personally, don't eat a ton of meat (you wouldn't know it by my Yelp reviews though), but Pendulum quickly stole my heart...and stomach. We have tried a little bit of everything here, but our staple products are 1) the ham hocks - you guys, they are PERFECT, if you don't buy your hocks here, what are you doing?! 2) The sausages - never boring, always original, my all time favorite is the cheeseburger sausage, we can't get enough. 3) the pancetta...ugh, so good 4) Burger Friday - if you haven't tried their parmesan fries (and burgers, obviously) you haven't lived. Thankfully they have enacted curbside pickup during COVID and have pretty much kept us alive. The pizza sausage? For the love. We smoked the Carolina BBQ sausages recently (for the inquiring mind, we smoked them at 180 for one hour, pulled them off and set the grill to 350 and once properly heated put them back on for 12 minutes) and they were absolutely perfect. Burger Friday is Bomb! For $6 you get a burger, a side, and a cute straw for your drink. A friend told me to get the herb fries and let me tell you why I agree. It comes with a garlic aioli that would become a staple in my kitchen if I got my hands on the recipe! It's been awhile since we ate here and it was just as delish as the last time! We ordered the El Cubano and The Butcher. One with fries and one with habanero kettled chips. Both sandwiches were amazing but we favored The Butcher. Especially with the habanero chips. Dave had the idea to put some inside of the sandwich...OMG. it really added a nice touch to it.. The chips were super hot when you eat them alone but putting a little inside of the sandwich gave it a nice 'kick' and the crunchy texture was a perfect touch to the amazing flavor of the roast beef that seemed to melt in your mouth. I've been pendulum plenty of times to get a nice cut of meat and when alkaline was just a pop up there and for some unknown reason I've never tried their lunch menu. Y'all I've been missing out for no reason! It was so good I got the big tex and it was everything I was looking for when I wanted a sandwich that day it was brisket caramelized onions and house made bbq sauce with pickles on texas toast bread and I can't even explain the flavors to you but that sandwich made me say wow after I took my first bite and honestly I've been thinking about it ever since And the fries went well with the sandwich and im definitely a big fan of french fries these garlic fries had actual garlic cloves mixed in with the fries and omg I ate them all Basically what I'm telling y'all is in hooked and that's gonna be back. I cant believe I haven't written a review on this place yet! My husband and I have been frequenting this place often since we first moved to Norfolk a few years ago. We've never purchased their butchered meats, but always come for the sandwiches! I love that they make some of their breads in house. Soooo good. My favorite is the Cubano! Their garlic rosemary fries have to be the BEST fries in town. I never thought I'd say that about a fries that arent coated in truffle oil, but these ones really are fantastic. I love that you can see the fresh rosemary and cloves of garlic throughout the perfectly cooked thick cut fries. They were STILL crunchy after a 20 minute drive home. I love that all their meat is cured and cut in shop. You can really taste that extra TLC. Theres no other way to explain it but bomb! Just remember they share a kit when with another restaurant, so be sure to check their hours. They close their kitchen an hour early but their butcher shop stays open a little later. read more

We started and completed this MemorialDay weekend with Pendulum Fine Meats, and couldn't be happier about it. They are currently taking pre-orders and bringing your order out to you in their parking lot when you get there. It's so great how well they have adapted and makes it super easy with two small kiddos. Amongst some regular chicken and eggs we ordered the pizza kit for Friday night. It may be my new 757 favorite za. The sauce is so tasty and the house made mozzarella was so amazing (and a really great portion for a super cheesy pizza). My little ones loved helping to make the pizza at home. We also got their Carolina BBQ sausage to grill out for Memorial Day. We normally just get their green chili chorizo sausage because it is so good every time, but I was very happy with deviating this week. The sausage was perfectly spiced and a really great texture. Very tasty and a lot of it. The mustard, which was spicy (you have the option of regular) wasn't overpowering and the swiss cheese was an extra compliment. Pendulum Fine Meats first opened in February of 2014 and sits behind the Naro Theater in the heart of Ghent. It is located in the building housed by the former Wright Chiropractic Clinic, a historic Ghent landmark that was first built in 1911. The owners renovated this building and developed it into the showcase it is today. Open as Pendulum by day, the popular ramen shop named Alkaline takes over at night, and together they have forged a very successful partnership. Pendulum operates as a butcher shop, market, and eatery, all under one roof. Some of their locally sourced items on display include Hubs Virginia Peanuts, NOFO Handcrafted Body Soaps, Speedy's Hot Sauces, and their own homemade cookies and candies, They also display Pendulum etched glassware, culinary books, wall paintings, and even a rack of neckties. If you wear a tie on a Wednesday, you get 10% off your entire order. This is on behalf of their "Tie Wednesday." Their back wall includes a long cooler that includes a number of non-alcoholic beverages, as well as local beers, wines, and other specialty food items too numerous to mention. One day I bought a jar of Tangy Turmeric Kraut and a bottle of Spicy Napa Kimchi Kraut Juice from their cooler to take home. They were both sourced from Farmstead Ferments in Albemarle County,Virginia and were uniquely flavorful. Their meat display cases featured some most interesting items. Among them were whole pheasant, semi-boned quail, whole Pekin duck, and Bahn Mi sausage, just to name a few. The owners make it a top priority to look for animals from local farmers who treat them as humanely as possible, on the pasture and beyond. A knife sharpening service is also provided. Classes in basic knife skills, breaking down a chicken, sausage making, and hog butchery demonstrations are available. Pendulum also puts out their Primal CSA (Community Sourced Agriculture) newsletter every two weeks, including recipes and a description of their latest CSA Primal Meats box, which includes enough meat and ingredients to feed two to three people. Local chef David Hannah's popular Tomato Jam is now available for these boxes. They currently offer five regularly featured sandwiches and an occasional specialty addition. So far I have tried the following: ROAST BEEF SANWICH: Lightly Smoked Roast Beef with Spicy Ancho Mayo, Swiss Cheese, and Caramelized Onions in Focaccia Bread. This was the most awesome roast beef sandwich I have ever tasted. The spicy ancho mayo gave it a nice kick, and the caramelized onions and Swiss cheese merged in harmony to form a divine taste combination. It melted in my mouth and was profoundly delicious. My Rating: 5 Stars. THE CUBAN: Spiced and Smoked Pork with Spicy Mustard, Red Onions, and Pickles in Griddled Flat Bread. This was my first ever Cuban sandwich, and it now sets the gold standard against which any and all others I may try elsewhere will be judged. The ingredients exploded with flavor and were well synchronized to form a powerful typhoon of tastes. My Rating: 5 Stars. PASTRAMI REUBEN: Smoked House Made Pastrami with Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, and Russian Dressing on Rye Bread. Offered as a special addition, the owner himself told me it was his favorite sandwich. This was also my first Pastrami sandwich since the one I ordered over twenty years ago from the French Bakery and Deli on Granby Street. If my taste cell memories are correct, the one I ordered here at Pendulum exhibited a more complex and deeper taste profile. The meat was exquisitely brined, seasoned, smoked and steamed, I ate half of it and boxed the rest to go, only to devour the rest as soon as I got home. I couldn't resist. It was that good. My Rating: 5 Stars. BRISKET SANDWICH: Open Face Style with Long Slow Smoked Brisket, Caramelized Onions, Pickles, Mustard, and BBQ Sauce on Texas Toast. Each of their other sandwiches surpassed my taste targets, but this one fell a bit short. Even though their brisket is smoked for at least 12 hours, the smoky flavor I expected did not fully come through for me. Some of the slices displayed a few fatty edges. It was passable overall, but seemed to lack the exceptionalism I enjoyed from the others. Given the rave reviews I have read about it from others, I will chalk this one up to a atypical serving.. Maybe it was me, but I have to rate 'em how I taste 'em. My Rating: 3 Stars. The customer service I have received here has been outstanding. Their ambiance and vibe capture the spirit of Ghent beautifully. Their selection of unique specialty meats and other items is truly remarkable. in spite of one sandwich that didn't quite agree with me, the overall quality of my experiences here to date still round up to a 5-star rating. Another incredible local place doing it right! Stopped in today for a sandwich, and am so glad I did! I had the "assistant", which consists of perfectly rare hot roast beef, smoked onions, horesradish sauce and sharp cheddar cheese on really good focaccia bread. It was amazing! I then decided to go back and get another sandwich to bring to my wife at home. She got the Stevedore, whcih is amazingly flavorful house cured ham, with cheddar on a brioche bun. All come with a choice of chips, fries, or a salad. I made the wise decision of the salad. It was a wonderful mix of greens, grape tomatoes, and onions tossed with a house made bacon vinegrette dressing. Since I was heading home, I also got some meats to go. They had some great charcuterie, which they were nice enough to let me sample. I took home five different kinds of salami, all delicious! They also had some beautiful steaks, chops, etc. in the meat case, many locally sourced. This is wonderful place worth finding, they're right behind the Naro Theater in Ghent, and actually have their own small parking lot adjacent. I admit that I decided to go to the Pendulum Fine Meats location in Norfolk Virginia after seeing it featured on one of the Guy Fieri tv episodes. I purchased some orange dream soda, some german chocolate cheesecake bar and some cut up pepperoni and bacon. They all tasted good the only caveat is that while the bacon tasted good both my husband and I agreed that there was more salt in the bacon than we both expected (it still tasted good though we both realized that the type of bacon we consumed was meant more to be combined with another food compared to it being just a standalone food after the cooking was done).
