My previous lender confirmed that the lien was released electronically, but PenFed told me I had to go to the title bureau and obtain a physical replacement title myself. I contacted the Cuyahoga County Title Bureau and was told that PenFed could have accessed and printed the title themselves. The representative even described PenFed as being "lazy" for making me handle something the credit union could have completed. On April 19th, 2023, I applied for a credit card with PenFed and I was approved. I completed the additional paper work needed along with making a deposit to meet all the requirements. Today is May 22nd, 2023 and I have NOT received my credit card. After numerous calls on: April 28th May 3rd May 10th May 19th May 22nd PenFed can't seem to get me a credit card. This has been the WORST 1st time experience with a credit union. At this point, I can NOT recommend doing business with this credit union. This is not a good way to start a banking relationship. Worst credit union ever! I canceled a contract with a Mexican timeshare within the allotted time and filed a dispute for a charge when they failed to return my money. Not only did PenFed say the charge was valid, but they also allowed the company to come back a second time to withdraw the same amount of funds. On top of this, I reported a fraudulent transaction from Zelle. They again stated the charge was valid without allowing me to submit any information. They immediately switched the loan over to my name and said the next payment would be due in October 2020 (he died September 21st 2020).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They however, would not give me access to the online portal as it was a privacy law to protect deceased members, although they were still coming for me for remittance. I had to open a new account under my name alone.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]After seeking guidance from an attorney to try and set up a different payment plan as I was now assuming his student loan debt and was surviving off of a sole income they essentially blew us off and drug us around for nearly a year having me fill out hardship applications, etc only to abruptly sell the loan to a debt collector without informing my attorney.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After I paid off the loan from the debt collector, they dinged my credit and reported the small discount from the debt collector to the IRS 3 years later to attempt to obtain taxes for money they said I should claim as "earned income". I'm very disappointed with the service of PenFed. My wife had been a member since the early 80 and in the last two week they had blocked her Debit and Credit cards. The had bounce my wife many calls between Fraud Dep and card member services and they haven't fixed the problem, plus no one have given an answer on why the cards are still blocked. We are traveling overseas at the moment and she can't use her cards. We are tired and very frustrated of dealing with Penfed. If we can get it fixed by next week (we're in Italy and traveling) then we're going to switch to USAA. Penfed screwed me on a Helic and almost made me lose a house I am buying. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I contacted Penfed to inquire about a Heloc on my current home to buy another house. I was then going to sell my current house after I did some work on it. I was completely upfront with the loan officer I talked to about my intentions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The loan processor had me jumping troigh all kinds of hoops to get this done. It house through all of the steps and it goes to underwriting. This was 9 days before my closing date on the house. I get a phone call from the loan processor telling me they will not do this loan because I am buying another house with it, we don't do this is all I was told. Wait a minute, the loan officer and the processor were both on board for 3 weeks. Now I'm scrambling to find another loan. Fortunately I was able to secure the funds but it cost me thousands of dollars to secure another loan in this short of time. I have pulled all of my money from Penfed and will never do business with them again. I will also do everything in my power to make sure everyone I know will not do business with them either. So, I had my 2023 BMW refinanced with penfed in June 2023. Penfed began sending me letters requesting the title. I responded in writing and by telephone that I do not have the title. Months go by and then in November 2023, I get a notice stating that my failure to provide title has forced them to increase my interest rate to the highest interest rate for their closed-end unsecured loans of 17.99%. Excuse me???? First of all, I don't have title and secondly I don't appreciate being threatened!!!!! I call to speak with someone and he gets very nasty on the phone and unprofessional. Cautionary Review of PenFed's loan department We've been members of Pentagon Credit Union for nearly 30 years, and we've had a great experience with their banking services. However, we strongly recommend against obtaining a mortgage loan from their loan department. This is our second time obtaining a home mortgage from PenFed, and we didn't have any issues the first time. However, this time around, the experience was absolutely unprofessional and marked by incompetence. In the beginning, we submitted our loan application through their officer, Adrian Rodriguez. However, we had to file a complaint because he didn't enter the correct information into the system, nor did he advise us of the incorrect information he entered into the system, which hindered us from uploading our documents. Moreover, despite our initial request for a VA loan, he proceeded with a conventional loan. Subsequently, Kim Garcia took over. Despite having solid credit scores, offering over 50% as a down payment on a $397,000 house, a household income of $165,000 with no other debts, and a calculated monthly mortgage of $1,400, we were unable to move forward due to the exorbitant fees imposed by PenFed. Although Kim successfully addressed the initial problem of not passing points and fees by eliminating some optional fees, the issue resurfaced when it reached the processor, Lisa Ramirez. As a solution, Kim suggested that we either make an additional $10,000 down payment, in the hope that it would resolve the issue, or consider switching to a VA loan. Kim explained that the situation was beyond their control, ceased responding to our calls, and assured us that her supervisor, Gabriella Bafidis, would contact us to reiterate the same. Unfortunately, Ms. Bafidis never reached out, which we found highly unprofessional. However, they did respond to our realtor's call, who reminded Kim that changing to a VA loan necessitated the seller's approval. We acknowledge that the issue lies with their processor and underwriter division, but our attempts to reach Lisa Ramirez for a discussion on resolving the matter were in vain. With a tight deadline looming, we had no alternative but to explore other lenders. Surprisingly, we discovered that our loan was so straightforward that most mortgage brokers could process it with ease and offered us a significantly lower interest rate. In light of our experience, we strongly advise against using PenFed's loan department. Our encounter with this department was marked by outrageous fees and a significant lack of competence and professionalism, particularly within the processing and underwriting division. These issues not only created unnecessary complications but also led to unresponsiveness from key personnel, leaving us with no choice but to seek alternatives. We believe that for a smoother and more reliable loan process, it's advisable to explore other lending options that can offer better terms and a higher level of service. read more

Before my total loss I would have gotten an additional loan with this bank. I called in AUGUST for information to give to the gap insurance company so I could get my loan paid off as my insurance company had already paid 18k towards my pay off. I didn't get any documents until mid September after calling and calling. ALSO im still required to make the monthly payments towards my car even though the 18k should have given me some leeway. I am still dealing with gap to get my car paid off in October and won't see a payoff until HOPEFULLY November. Now they want to charge me for insurance, from the time my car has been totaled, as well. You expect me to not have a vehicle for 3 months while I still pay on a car that had been scraped for parts in August plus insurance? The answer I received in letting them know I have another vehicle to pay for was "that's not our concern you still need to make your payments the 18k was a ONE time payment".... Yes, because I had 18 thousand dollars just sitting around to make a ONE time payment. You all have some backwards way of dealing with total loss and your GAP coverage. But I guess it's not your life not your money not your stress. if you have a total loss and have pen fed car loan ask your insurance agents to send you the check so you can make those payments because a lump sum doesn't give you time to get gap paid off. read more

Abysmal credit union. They lock people into 5 month holding periods with restricted savings accounts when they sign up and act as if a checking account is the keys to Fort Knox. I have no idea why I can get a credit card from 2 different banks with a 700+ credit score but they're just sure I'm too irresponsible for a checking or savings account. Not only are they deeply paranoid but the customer service is better at a local gas station. Honestly the gas station attendant can probably help you figure out what's wrong with your bank better than the people on the phones here can do. read more

December 9 I took almost a 100K check to Pentagon Federal Credit Union on Miramar Rd. - because they had refused the wire transfer from the mortgage company. By far best is my PATHFINDER travel card for 4% on travel expenses. Also customer relations are top rate as is their security. I also buy my Iphones from Penfed and its always ready to go. Poor customer service. After waiting 2 hours, I gave up waiting for "member services" for something that should have taken 2 minutes: a signature guarantee. After I called their main customer service number (and I had to explain to their customer service person what a "signature guarantee" was - something rather basic for a bank - but this required getting a manager on the phone, apparently), I was cheerfully informed I did not need an appointment for this. Well, maybe an appointment would have been better. They seem to have 1 or at most 2 employees servicing 15+ people who were waiting for "member services". Most of us can't afford to take a 2 hour lunch break, to waste it in a bank on something elemental like this. Since the property is a new construction and we see the rates going up. We asked if PenFed has a long term lock option. Yes they do, without upfront fees. Which is very attractive to us. In the meanwhile, we were waiting to provide the documents as the closing is in November. However, today October 27th, they told me because my company is in the Cannabis related company, they can't use my W-2 as income. I mean, really? I am a W-2 data analyst. Come on. Literally 2 weeks prior to the closing date. This is a very bad bank/credit union. They locked you a good rate for a long term lock but couldn't deliver. PenFed has forgotten what it means to be a CREDIT UNION. First and foremost....credit unions DON'T CHURN FEES. Yes, I overdrew my checking account. In all of my previous years with my previous credit union (which PenFed SUCKED up about 2 years ago) they would transfer AUTOMATICALLY from my savings to make sure the payment was procesed. Not PenFed THE BANK. It' much better for PenFed to churn $60 in fees than it is to take care of a customer and PROVIDE A TRUE CREDIT UNION SERVICE. I have a local CREDIT UNION that provides this EXACT SAME SERVICE. But not PenFed THE BANK. While I was traveling internationally, Pen Fed TURNED OFF MY ACCOUNT ACCESS AND DEBIT CARD 3 TIMES. Yes, I had called them BEFORE I LEFT, and put the travel notification on line. YET THEY STILL TURNED OFF MY CARD. Try calling the US from Europe...holding, "please wait", being told "I'll make sure it's takem care of"...etc, etc, etc. Do yourself a favor....If you REALLY want a good credit union... Poor Service - We opened a CD a couple years back and had to open two savings accounts in order to establish the CD. There rates are good but the service is poor. We opened the account from a woman named Mary and it took almost two hours. Two years later we went to Close the accounts with a different woman named Mary. Lets just call her "Mary Jones". She was so determined that I didn't have an account and I told her I did. She asked that I look at her computer screen to show me. It turns out the first Mary keyed in the wrong SSN. Mary Jones rather than apologize indicated she wasn't the person that keyed in the wrong information. Her customer service was rather poor. I can not recommend this place! read more

I'm unaware of your hiring process for your customer service team, but in the few times I have had to call In for my auto loan, I was handled like a person who committed a crime. This company has hired egotistical, psychologically challenged, individuals who choose to make simple questions and matters that should have a clear protocol, rocket science. I have never received a straight answer instead being harrassed, mislead, HUNG UP ON. I asked a question of the process for returning a vehicle and was flat out refused by a incompantant employee. And I quote " you cannot just return the car voluntarily, you agreed and sign a contract and we don't have to take the car back" WOW so voluntary surrender does not exist within this company even when individuals fall on hard times or JUST want to know procedure. I asked to be transferred and was told something completely different immediately. (this is one experience of several similar) This is sad because the consumers are what make this company, a company and to have it destroyed by hateful people, just gives better excuses to use robotic interactions, and you will NOT have a largely or continued success if my experience is like anyone elses. They suck. Lost my car title TWICE, and 1.5 years they still haven't adjusted my interest rate. This last time, they sent the title back (they said) To SOME WALGREENS IN TUMBUK4. Seriously. Cannot make this stuff up. Congressman in 3 states (military travel) is next one my list of letters to write. Ridiculous! Supposed to be helping military people, not jacking them up,. Well, overall if the benefits suit you, go ahead. We have used them in a limited fashion for a credit card. They will charge you for a mailed statement, so you might be better off using their rather byzantine and confused web-page. There are multiple clicks that appear to get you to your card statement, some of them work, others get you to a place that you don't want to be. Yes, all of the information is there, but hard to find. They are quick to shut down a card without warning, they claim that they will try to reach you via email, phone etc., I know that may or may not happen. Phone support is clumsy. Overall, I get the impression that they do not trust you, no matter how long and faithful your customer relationship has been. Penfed works, but other card agencies work better. read more

Literally the worst bank on the planet. I had a credit card transferred to them. I go into the branch to make a cash payment. Hard earned money mind you. They thank me for my payment and hold the available balance for 10 days. A CASH PAYMENT! come pay day, I will be paying off this card and closing it. the worst everything. customer service is lousy. policy is lousy. There's places out there that WANT your business. go there. avoid this bank like The Rona. read more
