    Primitive campsite
    Holly G.

I have camped at Pohick Bay twice, once in the family campsite and once at the primitive site. This review is about the primitive sites. These sites have no electric or water hookups and are tent only, which decreases demand and makes for a much quieter experience. Rangers do rounds pretty often so it feels very safe. My site was shaded, flat and pretty large. You also have access to the family site where the camp store and activities are. The restrooms are decent, but I did not enjoy the showers - they are exceptionally small and poorly ventilated. The showers at the family sites are much larger, better ventilated and one even has A/C. Would definitely shower over there next time. The comfort station does have a dishwashing station which is nice and restrooms are clean enough for a campground. Camp store is well stocked and offers firewood and ice, but is pretty expensive (which I do normal expect in Fairfax county). Overall this is a great camping option for someone who lives in/around NOVS and wants an easy, convenient and peaceful camping experience.

There's pandemic Pohik Bay Regional Park and pre-pandemic Pohick Bay Regional Park. A 40-minute drive south of Washington, D.C. passed Mount Vernon, Pohick Bay Regional Park is a large park near Mason Neck State Park. The park is along Gunston Cove. Here is what to love: 1) Scenery- Along the water, it offers beautiful views of the cove and river. 2) Amenities- It has three hiking trails at varying levels, a playground, campgrounds, kayak rentals, bathrooms, etc. 3) Trails- With most trails not very long or intense, it's a perfect hike with small kids. What not to love: 1) Parking- It's free for Virginia residents, but it cost $8 for out of state visitors. When the world is not in a pandemic, there's a large water park open worth visiting.

    Happy campers.

Pohick Bay is a typical family campground experience characterized by crowds, kids, and amenities. I generally don't mind those things, just something to be mindful of if you are expecting a quiet and secluded escape. With that being said, the staff is incredibly attentive and they strive to enforce the 10 pm noise curfew. Admittedly, I can say that from first-hand experience. We got a little carried away playing Catch Phrase and didn't realize the time was 10:15 pm. The ranger kindly approached us to remind us of the noise policy. We have certainly been those campers wishing others would hush down at midnight, so I appreciate that the campground upholds this policy out of respect for campers.

Went here for a walk, there a fee to enter the park for out state visitors about $8.00 per car. The park is about 4 miles from the US 1. The park has trails to explore, highly recommended for anyone looking to explored the wooded area and relaxed for a few hours. The park also has boat ramp for those who want go in the lake and enjoy the water. The park has small playground area for kids to enjoy. The beautiful sunset is breathtaking and tranquility of this park is worth to visit. The park has plenty of parking. The sunset is the part of being in the park during sunset is breathtaking.

Camped here in our 30' Class A for 2 nights. Sites were wooded, semi-private and level. Our site had a fire ring, grill, picnic table and electricity. There was a playground and a couple of bathhouses and laundry. They had a movie night at the playground for all to enjoy. Was run more like a private campground than a municipal one. Only negatives I can think of is there was only one dump station for the entire campground. This wasn't an issue for us because we checked out on a Monday so there was no wait but I imagine on a Sunday it's pretty backed up. We were 10 minutes late leaving our campsite and Katelyn called me twice to make sure we were leaving. I found this very rude. It was obvious we were breaking camp. Wanted to charge us $25 to check out by three. Ridiculous! Never, ever has this happened to us before and it wasn't like there was anyone coming in on our site that day anyway! I could see her concern if we weren't obviously getting ready to leave! We have camped at over 50 campgrounds and not once have we had this happen! Not that we are always running behind but occasionally we do. Anyway it's a nice place to stay but you better leave by the checkout time or else!!!!

Camp site is nice and deep with fire ring.

It is very nice to have a campground so close to us in DC. I was very excited when we found Pohick Bay a few years ago and have come back several times since. Most of the lots are deep enough to feel like you're not camping right by the street. In some other campgrounds we have had to set our tents up on square gravel pads, which I didn't like, but here tents can be anywhere on the campsite. There is water and electricity. The bathrooms are conveniently located with flush toilets, showers, and a large outdoor sink for dishwashing. The bathrooms are heated during the winter months, and the showers are hot. Since I don't have small children, I stay as far away from the playground as possible. It gets a little noisy over there, but I can see how the circle of campsites with a playground in the middle would be a dream for families. There are many activities to do: There's is a water park, which I have heard good things about but haven't been to, mini golf, frisbee golf, kayaks, paddle boats, and several trails. The campground also runs events like movies at night and hayrides. Side note: We used the paddle boats yesterday, and our interactions with the attendant were strange and confusing so say the least. I believe that he might have had some learning challenges, which we we patient and good natured with, but nonetheless, we were confused and bewildered during the whole process. It would have been nice to have someone on hand who could tell us what was happening. A short walk from the campsites is Gunston Hall, the historically restored home of George Mason, and about a 15 drive minutes away is George Washington's home. We have toured both and enjoyed them.

Kayaked with my husband here yesterday. It was our first time to visit this park. There is a lot of wildlife, and the scenery is very beautiful. We recommend coming here to enjoy water activities! Kayaks are disinfected after use, and staff are wearing masks.

Ask the Community - Pohick Bay Regional Park

Can you swim there and if not can anyone tell me a good place to go swimming?

Swimming is not allowed in Pohick Bay.

How strict are they about alcohol at camp sites?

I wouldn't recommend walking around with a bottle or can in the open. But as long as everyone at your site knows how to handle themselves properly, without drawing any attention, you shouldn't have any trouble.

It has been an incredibly fun adventure for us - finding parks and places to enjoy, hike, and immerse ourselves in the nature, beauty of the outdoors, and wildlife in Virginia & Maryland. We walked all the trails in the Hidden Pond Park and liked spending time in the Hidden Pond Nature Center in the park. There are many activities for children and adults in the parks. The staff there were friendly and helpful. The park is well maintained and there are so many picturesque areas and hiking trails to experience there. We spent about three hours in the park. The park was peaceful and quiet. We experienced no traffic and saw very few people during our hike on the trails. Austin, one of the staff in the Nature Center, said it had to do with the geography & location of the park. Along the trails are many sitting areas to take a break. We saw many kinds of birds, deer, flowers, and foxes during our time in the park. Strongly recommend wearing bug repellent & sunscreen and checking out a map of the trails in the nature center. Beautiful park to visit during each season and very ideal for wildlife photographers and for peaceful & quiet walks in the park.

Pretty eventful day, April 15, 2026. Staff were helpful and nice! Nature Center provides wildlife education and animals, a place to refill water or use the utilities. I wouldn't expect to see all that we seen, as think we were pretty lucky to come across all of that in one day. For instance as soon as we sat down on the bench near the river, the hawk flew over and landed nearby, first to get a drink of water then perched nearby. The fox happened to be coming to the river before we locked eyes and ran off while I fumbled with my dang lens cap, as always. Good luck!

Most people know Adventure Links for their popular camp programs for children and teens. However, they also offer stellar corporate team building programs, which is how I got to know them. About five years ago, as the CEO of a growing company of 20 professionals, I was struggling with how to address some growing pains and spice up our upcoming quarterly retreat. A friend recommended Adventure Links, so I scheduled a meeting with Anna, the CEO. Anna came to my office and interviewed me to understand my business, our challenges, and what I hoped to accomplish. She asked many questions, listened, and took notes. The next week, we took our team of 20 to their retreat location. Anna and her team had put together an all-day agenda of activities that went way beyond simple ropes courses. What surprised and "sold" me on them was how she'd managed to incorporate our growing pains into her exercises in meaningful ways. Sure, we had fun and bonded, but more importantly most of us began to see certain everyday problems in meaningful new ways, with fresh solutions. To this day our team references those exercises like old Seinfeld episodes. After each exercise - some physically challenging and all mentally challenging - Anna would bring us together and help us draw correlations to some of our corporate issues. It helped that she has a sharp wit and great sense of humor. She and her team also knew when to push and put us on the spot to drive home a point. Six months later, we wanted to bring Adventure Links back for another quarterly retreat, but this time due to bad weather we had to do the exercises in our office. They totally pulled it off! The indoor exercises were unique and again gave us a fresh perspective on both issues and people. An example - during one intense exercise where we split into two teams, a junior staff person had a "eureka!" moment with a brilliant solution to a problem, and spontaneously took control of our team, which included several executives. I had no idea this young lady was so intellectually gifted and capable of leadership under pressure. How valuable is that information for an employer? My firm has engaged Adventure Links several times since then, all with success. When my children are old enough, I'll be sending them to the Adventure Links camps...I know they'll learn and have fun. Adventure Links rocks!

It was nice being dropped off and picked up. We did have issues with our card online, but when I called in to book, Nancy was helpful. She got us all situated and sent an email to confirm. We filled out waivers online which was a breeze. We watched a quick safety video, picked up our lifevest and were on our way. The water was the perfect temp, and it was clear. Tips: bring snacks and water. You are out there 4-5 or longer hours. Especially if the water is low, which ours was. We used a waterproof bag and had no issues. We used a tube with a cup holder which was nice. I wore my life vest out of precaution even though I can swim, plus it made it comfortable for my to use it as a neck rest. I've noticed people mention in previous reviews that the bus was dirty ect. Um, you're in the woods. If you get picked up after many other groups the bus will be dirty as everyone is wet coming out of the water no matter what activity you choose. I would not own a brand spanking new vehicle for this type of environment and job. Used is best and saves money I'm sure. Wear a hat and sunglasses, put in that sunscreen. Bring a waterproof phone case/bag. You will have no service out there so put it on airplane mode and use it as a camera.
