It's the Y. It's not a fancy schmancey, hoity-toity, lala gym. It's a neighborhood gym for normal people. Average Joe's if you will. And I love it. We left Crunch after 17 years (well, technically it was Gold's before but you get the point) because I had a female stalker and Crunch wouldn't help me (even with restraining orders). I was wildly unimpressed with their non-assistance. We went to Equinox bc it was supposed to be nicer and it was only a 1 mile walk from our house - fantastic. While it looked nicer, it was not nicer. It's old, outdated and limited. It's stupid expensive. And the hours really, really suck. So after a year, we left Equinox and we were wavering on going back to the Bay Club or joining the Y. Our kids really wanted to work out and the Y was a great option for a family plan. So we joined for them. While testing it out and thinking we might bounce out to the Bay Club, we ended up loving it. They recently upgraded all the equipment to smart equipment and I'm diggin it! I haven't seen these machines since I was at an upscale gym in Houston a couple years ago! I love the price ($185 for all 6 of us, plus it as daycare vs $230/mo at equinox per person and no kids are welcome) I love the normalness of the Y too. As a Nationwide YMCA member, I've always been treated the same as local members at every other YMCA branch. Unfortunately, Peninsula YMCA would not allow me to use their towels because they said they don't have enough towels. I think that's a ridiculous reason, especially since towel service is one of the benefits that made me choose the YMCA. I hope Peninsula YMCA reconsiders this policy and treats Nationwide members equally. read more

Oh man I had no idea this is such a nice gym. It is such a cool place to exercises when you are in the SM County area. This location is close to everything including Foster City. I like how the size of this YMCA is super big. It has a large pool and a very huge exercise area. Whether you are a local or a tourist/outside staff member like me it's a must visit. Even better there is a lot more parking than any other YMCA that I have seen. Towel service? You got it. Like Palo Alto family YMCA Everything you need for a good welcoming workout is available. This gym has deteriorated to a free for all. The rules around cellphone usage and especially telephone calls are posted but not in enough places. Worse still they don't enforce them. The one or two people that have the cans to enforce the rules are not around often enough. When they try and enforce the 'no telephone calls' members ignore or even yell at the staff with no retaliatory actions against the members. Several members lack any form of manners or common courtesy. They see no problem sitting around on the machines having 30 minute social visits followed by 10 more minutes of them, still on the machine, but staring at their phones (Lady Garlic!). Parents apparently send their teenagers here for free babysitting. Teens do exactly what they do at home: stare at their phones. And they take pictures, also prohibited. Other review comments about the lazy grumpy front desk staff are true as well but not across the board. Furthermore, there are two younger staff members that will initiate a long conversation with members who are on the machines. This sets a bad example. I started coming here as a benefit of my Wellhub gym pass. It's fine but nothing to write home about. Front desk staff are so lackluster. Barely a hello most days and begrudgingly gave me a tour on my first day after I had to request it. I was disappointed to see they recently swapped out most equipment with some new fancy Egym thing that requires you to provide more personal info and use a wristband to access the machines. It tracks your info, work outs and biometric data. Oh and more screens. No thanks. How do you require that when I've already signed up to use equipment? Several of us were not happy and just wandered around and use the manual machines that were left. Bummed for sure. read more

I can't believe in USA , there are incompetent people working In fitness field . I am referring to YMCA, staffs I love those young people working there but they. are clueless . I'm insured for fitness programs , my insurance company pays high fee but . the staffs didn't bother to register me nor billed the insurance . staffs didn't care about losing money .When I was paying from my pocket, they continued to debit funds from account even I cancelled my membership. they cheated me . I don't know how to reach their main office and report . ymca wants people to donate money but they don't care to recruit members and make money thru membership , in my case , they lost about. 500.00 . very poor. customer response . I am so glad that I decided to join the YMCA! They offer a variety of membership options. Make sure to let them know your employer as many offer discounts (e.g. waived enrollment fee and monthly discounts). Let's be clear, this is not your Equinox gym with Instagrammable juice bars, but offers a surprisingly lot of activities. For families, probably the best thing they offer is free childcare (age 3months+), while you use their facilities! This is great for caretakers who want to workout, while having their little one watched. They have indoor and outdoor basketball courts, indoor swimming pool, and your standard cardio machines and free weights. Lockers with built-in locks with showers and a sauna. You do need to bring your own towel. They also have a variety of complimentary exercise activities (e.g. pilates, HIIT, etc). The staff are also great and some know everyone's name by heart! Overall, I've had a fantastic experience and highly recommend for anyone! read more

Ultimately, this was not a fit for me. - I'm not a swimmer, so I don't take advantage of that great value. - I'm a night owl, so I can't workout later as they close at 9pm on weekdays. - the showers and changing areas are open. I'm used to showers with small changing areas for more privacy. This is my personal preference. - I don't see myself using other YMCAs in the Bay Area - I'm not a workout class person. If you are, lots of fun classes to burn calories. - my kids are older - I don't see myself using the child care at the YMCA (this would have been great when my kids were younger). Overall, might be still a good choice price wise. It looks like some classes are popular and always packed. And pool is busy (outside working hours). Some swimmers are mean, and they talk to you like they own the lane by paying a $80 membership. Or they do not want to share the lane because they are too fast on a Sunday afternoon . The pool rule says maximal 4 people per lane but the guards will tell you up to 6 per lane. 35 min limit for equipment if people care. No time limit for swimming yet read more

There's a one star review here from Dec 2022 that I don't entirely agree with. That person is probably best to look at a more expensive gym like maybe Equinox. Please also keep in mind that the YMCA (at least I know for this location) is not for profit. The YMCAs are really there to serve the community. I usually get a 'hello' or 'welcome in' and a 'bye' or 'have a great day' in the way out but it's not a deal breaker. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I do love this place. It is truly a godsend. I joined in January this year and should have probably joined sooner. Sure, some of the equipment might be outdated but they all work. I love the outdoor balcony to get some sun in my face or just a private area to lift free weights or slap the ropes. I'm also a member at 24 but I much rather prefer to work out here as it is a lot cleaner, especially the restrooms. The best part for me is being able to drop off my 2.5 year old to the daycare knowing he is cared for and loved there. It relieves me of the huge mom guilt I used to have for leaving him at home and taking turns going to the gym between myself and husband. As far as the gym patrons go, everyone seems to be about their business in working out so I'm able to work out on the machine I want with minimal wait. I come from a different branch to use location for one day and person at the front pointed out towels are for branch only members. I thought this was odd since "everyone is welcome" to use other branches(as YMCA advertises) and I do pay a membership, thought this was the wrong way to handle a one time person who comes to workout and may need a towel! Updating my review because we had an extremely negative encounter with the aquatics director who was aggressive and literally yelled at parents for mistakes that he made. While the other staff members remained helpful, management did not do anything to respond to our concerns. On top of that, recreational swim space and hours appear to be getting more and more limited. As a result, membership value is no longer what it used to be. read more

Every day off work from Santa Clara I'll swing by to have a quick 30 min- 1-hour swim before heading back to my place (south SF city). Incredibly rude, confrontational and condescending staff. I don't actually understand what their problem is - as a new member family, instead of being welcomed and gently corrected if we didn't know which door went where, we got outrageous sarcasm and literal, confrontational lectures. This type of behavior towards community members and paying customers, who have their kids in tow and aren't here to create some sort of drama, speaks to a cultural issue from management where juvenile staff either feels actual contempt for the community, or knows no better. This review is regarding Gaby Torres the Zumba instructor alone. Overall this YMCA is great. Among the YMCA members that we know, it is well known that Gaby is very rude, unfriendly, abrasive in her language towards criticizing how members follow her. Some members won't take her class for that reason. To top it all, she exhibited extremely inappropriate behavior recently. A friend made the mistake of trying to enter the Zumba dance class which was ending. Gaby just went crazy and started yelling at her. My friend barely stepped into that room and started to walk out when Gaby started yelling at her. My friend then went to the front door to enter the YMCA. She got to the front desk started talking to staff about Gaby's behavior. Gaby stormed right next to my friend and elbowed her, started talking over her! She started saying how she is tired of being disrespected by gym members. She also started lying how that was the third time my friend tried to get thru that door. Gaby was acting like a complete bully that day! On the other hand, most other instructors and front desk staffs here are great. read more

My girlfriend became a member but may not have totally understood the membership conditions as she speaks almost entirely Chinese. She used and enjoyed the facility, I paid the bill with my credit card. My girlfriend was notified that she needed to permanently return to China, at least for a year or so, this was quite sudden. She told me she had canceled her YMCA membership. I'm not sure how she did this but an email is their requirement, I know she did not email them and may have been unclear while telling them she needed to end her membership. I failed to realize I was still being charged $88.00 per month until I did some end of year accounting. I called the YMCA today and explained the circumstances. I spoke a very polite office staffer who was not authorized to provide a refund but suggested I speak with Mgr Carlos. I then spoke with Carlos who explained their policy but also understood the situation and realized the member had not used the facility in 5 plus months. Carlos agreed to stop billing me and to go back two months and credit my credit card two monthly payments. This was totally reasonable and I appreciated his willingness to work with me and give me a partial refund. This entire situation was actually my fault. I should have been paying more attention. I appreciate the YMCA's understanding, it been my experience that other gym facilities are quite rigid and very reluctant to work with the customer regarding any type of refund. That clearly was not the case today, Thank you Carlos and Peninsula YMCA. As a side note, I learned the Peninsula YMCA has membership documents in multiple languages. It's my feeling that my girlfriend may have been a bit embarrassed about her limited English skills. I do know she really enjoyed the pool and facility for the six months she used it. read more

Grateful for the ability to reserve a lane in the pool a few tines a week for water running and strength training. The COVID protocol is very good. Staff is conscientious. They do regular shutdown of pool and shower like every two weeks and this time last 3 weeks. So lame & so unbelievable. If you like poor or spa, don't go this one or you will feel frustrated quite often, their management is bad as no one is responding to so many 1-2 star reviews here. their refund or cancellation policy is also tricky - just don't mess with them. Update: thanks to Danielle for getting back to us, I am happy to see the new locker but for the record, pool/shower maintenance seems to be going on for 6-8 times already this year, like in total more than 40 days? That's unusual comparing to last year or other facilities. We are paying a little extra (like 2x more comparing to 24) but not getting much availability. They have no air flow in the building. The top floor is extremely hot and is very muggy. The A/C has not worked in a long time and I have heard they have no intentions on fixing it. It has been upwards of 75 degrees at 6:00am in the morning. It is honestly horrifying and very hard to work out in. They are apparently waiting on trust money to come in but in the meantime, we are very uncomfortable and I have had to leave early several times because I could not breath. They have fans and window A/C that just seem to move the hot air around. The window A/C's also only work in the direct area that they are located. It is very disappointing. read more

I really like this gym. Just joined. Mainly because no masks are required, although 50% are still wearing thrm. The AMT machines are fairly new. They also have large fans on the wall with pull cords you can use to turn them on so you can keep cool.The place is very clean The staff is very helpful and friendly. Parking is free and plentiful. There are some machines outside on the balcony which would be good if we ever have towear masks again. There is an indoor pool and a basketball court.The locker room looks updated and locks are incorporated into them so you do not need to bring your own. They look very safe.The showers look old and are small. There is a body wash provided in each shower but no shampoo. There is a sauna. Currently there are no Spin classes except at 5 pm. The said they hope to add more free classes. There are morning classes going on now. Here are the fees. Adults $82.00 per month. Seniors$72.00. There is a $99.00 fee to join. Kids are less. They also have financial assistance so if you have low income you can get as much as 50% off. Monthly dues can be paid six months in advance or deducted monthly from your checking account. read more

The childcare dept is PHENOMENAL. I feel I can say this because I've worked in childcare. They remember my sons name, his tempurment, that he can't walk but they help with his training, they let me know how he did while I was gone, and follow strict guidelines for cleanliness. The entire staff is so kind. I can't say enough good things. The rest of the staff throughout the gym are amazing as well. Always striking up conversations with clients. And there is always cleaning staff walking around cleaning the equipment. read more

Price: $75 for all of Silicon Valley, and pay $8 at any YMCA in America when visiting. Great value. Facility: Sub-par. Floor plan very awkward and everything feels small and cramped. Breakdown below. Weight room: Tiny, old equipment. Border lined unacceptable. Maybe 8-10 people can workout comfortably. You often have to wait for equipment. Cardio: Okay. Upstairs has nice equipment, but not much of it. Downstairs is again, border lined unacceptable. The hallway is lined with ellipticals, 2 spin bikes, and some other misc stuff. Stretching room: non-existant. Not acceptable. Basketball courts: 2 indoor, 1 outdoor. Pool. 4 lanes, not usually crowded. This is my secondary location I use for after work. If I were basing joining the YMCA on this being my main location, I would not join. read more

This place was okay, kinda expensive. We signed up during a promotion but cancelled after about 6 months. The kids liked the swimming pool, the overall facility is kinda small, once you've done everything, it seems like that's it. Yoga classes were good and they have a nice onsite day care where they watch your kids while you work out. I would recommend this if you planned on using the facilities at least twice a week, otherwise, just go ride a bike. read more

For lap swimmers, this place is incredibly frustrating. Lap swimmers have zero priority and lanes are close all the time for a single swim lesson. It looks like M/W/F, one cannot lap swim until all the school swim teams have finished. I've waited over 2 hours for a single lane to open. They have a special value membership for teens, so I signed my son up. After more than a year, I decided to cancel since my son didn't go often. The final payment did not go through for some reason. No one notified me. My son went to workout and the front desk yelled to him that it would be his 'last time' since he owed $48. He embarrassed my son, and was so rude. I called to rectify and he was RUDE to me on the phone. I drove there, corrected in person and the manager 'waived' a late fee. But seriously I cannot imagine a front desk person being so very rude to a kid. Really???!!! Makes me glad I cancelled. read more

Sean the manager and everyone in this facility are awesome folks! The facilities are well clean and very well maintained. Everything here is family friendly and safe. They have the latest workout equipment. The pool is very cool so you won't have to feel over exhausted in heated pools. They have really good training staff as well as swim coaches for all ages. There is always a lifeguard on duty. Their prices are reasonable but worth it. It's around $125 for a family of three or more for our family. When you walk in, you feel very welcomed by the staff. I have been coming here since I was 11 years old. I have tried other gyms since then and there is nothing like the Y in the San Mateo area. Highly recommended! read more
