I was a member of this location for over a decade, and since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like it. The nearest one to me now is in Atlanta, and I still miss the San Mateo club regularly. This location has everything you could possibly want in a fitness facility--and then some. The Fitness Floor Downstairs is a beautifully air-conditioned workout space designed for people who are serious about exercising. No distractions, no crowds hovering by the windows--just a clean, focused environment. You'll find: * Full weight training equipment * Recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills * Dedicated spin, Pilates, TRX, and group fitness studios * A large open stretching area with foam rollers * Cold, filtered water stations throughout * Staff available for spotting if you're training solo It's efficient, professional, and thoughtfully designed. Locker Rooms & Amenities The locker rooms feel more like a boutique hotel than a gym. They are consistently spotless and fully stocked with: * Plush towel service * Spacious showers with teak benches * Steam rooms infused with eucalyptus * Complimentary razors, Q-tips, and personal care items * Premium Kiehl's products It's luxurious, yes--but also incredibly practical. I rarely write reviews, but I feel people should know about my experience before signing up for Equinox. My biggest issue with Equinox is that they lied to me about the cancellation process to get me to sign up. Before joining, I specifically asked what I would need to do if I wanted to cancel my membership. I was clearly told that I only needed to give one month's notice. I relied on that information when I decided to join. A few months later, when I went in to cancel, I was suddenly told that I had signed a one-year contract. That is not a minor misunderstanding. I asked a very specific question before enrolling, and they withheld information about the 1 year contract. And for $250/month, I don't think the gym itself justifies the price. Weight clips are frequently missing, and the restrooms are often not as clean as you would expect from a gym charging a premium membership fee. But honestly, those things are secondary. The real problem is the way the membership was sold to me. I expect a premium company to be transparent with its customers, especially when they are making a significant financial commitment. read more

I've been a member at Equinox for quite some time and have always had a great experience there. Will, my trainer, understood my needs and tailored my training to match my goals. Recently they went above and beyond. I had an injury early last year and couldn't work out. I kept telling myself that I'll be back Equinox next month. After six months I realized it would be a while till I could come back and wished I had put my membership on hold as I had paid dues for about six months and not used the club. I called the club and spoke to Ethan, the manager, and explained I wanted to put my membership on hold till I could come back. He took a look at my account and saw that I hadn't been at the club in six months and, after getting a doctors letter, gave SIX MONTHS CREDIT. I was flabbergasted. Who does nice things like this any more. I started in early January and won't have to pay dues until July. Ethan, Will and all the other staff are amazing as are the members I have met there. 2026 is off to a great start!!! read more

I had a really bad experience today at Equinox, and I feel like I have to share it. On Google Maps it shows they are open until 6 pm, so I went to the steam room around 5. While I was in the women's steam room, completely naked, a man walked in. I honestly froze because I couldn't understand why a man was even in the women's steam room. And instead of apologizing, he told me that I was rude because he was "leaving." I felt so embarrassed and confused. About ten minutes later, when I was trying to get dressed, he came in again and started yelling that the time was up and he was leaving. It was me and another woman there, and we were both just in shock. This is supposed to be a safe space for women to undress and relax. I don't think in any situation a man should be walking into a female changing room, especially without warning. I left feeling embarrassed and honestly violated. I'm going to ask to cancel my membership because I don't know how I'm supposed to feel comfortable undressing there again after this. This was a really terrible experience. read more

Super clean gym with a ton of equipment! Everyone minds their own business, you rarely ever have to wait for equipment even at peak times, and it's fairly spacious. They have a variety of classes too. It has less amenities than other Equinox locations, but the monthly rate is priced to reflect that it seems. Can't really complain about pricing and amenities here when other yoga/barre studio memberships charge the same amount for less Also, would love to highlight Franki, one of the membership advisors. She's so kind and great at what she does. The hours aren't great. It's a bummer to see it close so early when it's so packed in the final hour. Most of this gym is like a hotel gym/spa. It's very nice and upscale. I will say it's not really the greatest lifting gym. There's no calf machine, no butt blaster, no true shoulder machines. It'll get you a decent workout but it's not like Crunch. Unlike Crunch, you get better people. That's ultimately what you're paying for here. There's no one video taping themselves. People wear shoes. No one drops weights and grunts extra loud like a D-bag. It's $200+ per person per month so it weeds out a lot of the riff raff and the younger kids who don't have gym etiquette. I will say, it's lackluster and if there was any other good options in San Mateo, I would leave immediately. But 24 hour is essentially a jail house with a gym, crunch is super douchey, and fitness 19 is a closet with some weights and a treadmill. That's basically your only options here. Just had a session with Pearl at Equinox (at the Spa) and wow -- what a game changer. She really loosened up my entire body. I've had other massage therapists get a little hesitant with me because I'm super flexible, but Pearl totally got it. She has an amazing understanding of stretching and really felt my body's limits -- she gave me that deep release that I needed more than I knew. Her energy is beautiful -- calm, focused, and intuitive. You can tell she really knows what she's doing and loves helping people feel better in their bodies. Honestly, such a gem. I generally don't write reviews but some companies do so wrong and treat you so bad that you gotta speak up and spread the word. I want to share about shady money-making practices at Equinox. I thought Equinox is a premium gym and I had a good onboarding experience when they were trying to sign me up as a member, the membership felt expensive but hey! I was investing in my health so I went ahead with it. I asked at the time of joining what's the process to cancel, they told me one month advance notice. So when I wanted to cancel after 6 months due to personal reasons. I was told about a ONE YEAR CONTRACT!! The membership is already expensive 250$ a month at the time so the one-year contract comes out to $250 × 12 = $3,000. That's not a small amount, and if you're going to charge that much anyway, it should be made clear up front. Why even quote it per month if you're locking people into an annual liability? This major contract clause was never clearly communicated to me, even when I had asked them about cancellation prior to joining, this part was safely *omitted* from the conversation during onboarding. It was told it must have been buried somewhere in the T&C documents that you scroll through when you pay for the membership fee online. Hiding such a significant financial commitment deep in the paperwork instead of explaining it clearly upfront during the initial meeting feels misleading, and more so when the CUSTOMER ASKED ABOUT IT. Seems very unethical to me. And what's worse than the policy itself is how robotic and insensitive the team's responses have been. It has completely ruined the experience for me. I do not appreciate the male pushiness of men trying to get dates from women working out at the gym. It's clean, towels are available and it's the usual suspects for the equipment needed on the gym floor. Cool they have some recovery equipment as well. Staff seems friendly if distant. The atmosphere is dark and claustrophobic, far from what you'd expect for $200+/month. I am really grateful that I upgraded my membership to All Access for only an extra $50 per month. This Equinox was only 2 miles from where I worked today. The facility was amazing, and nice like how you would expect an Equinox. However the few cons are: 1. Parking. During peak hours you have to pay for parking 2. Parking again. It's such a pain to find parking in this area. 3. They don't have locks that's already attached to the lockers, so you have to bring you own, borrow one, or put things in your car. read more

I've been a member of Equinox San Mateo since the beginning of this year and have to say that its incredibly convenient since my work office is right across the street. Equinox offered 3 complimentary personal training sessions as well as a very good package of discounts on clothing, and other classes. I previously only went to 24 Hour fitness and after going to Equinox, I'm always pleasantly surprised to find all the amenities I could want (shower, conditioner, etc.) in steady supply and the restrooms/locker rooms are always incredibly clean. For someone who works mostly from home, the gym is my second home and I'm glad to attend Equinox! They also have a smoothie bar on-site, as well as Wi-Fi and tables for those who need to join a quick meeting or hop on a quick call. I highly recommend Equinox for young professionals and those who want a clean gym while also the ability to sit down and crank out work if needed. Thanks Equinox staff! read more

My wife and I have been members of this gym since it opened in 2004. For the most part, it has been a great place: clean, good equipment, good people, good space. For the most part, what they deliver is consistent with their slogan , "it's not exercise, it's life." They are very interested in branding, portraying themselves as sexy,cutting edge, young... It seems, though, that once you get old, it's time for you to leave. For example, they had a yoga class attended by and suitable for older members, but someone decided there weren't enough attending, so they cancelled it, replacing it with a rapid fire vinyasa class suitable for 20 year olds. In my opinion, it was a calisthenics class rather than a yoga class, but I acknowledge that they are popular and consistent with the Equinox Image. It's a great place if you're young, but maybe if you benefit from their programs to live long enough, you should just go away. read more

I had a guest pass today trying to access the gym and join a class with my 15 year old, we were stopped at the concierge because they said 15 year olds are not permitted to use any equipment in the facility due to policy. The staff along with the manager assured me that there was nothing they could do because it is policy. I then reviewed the policy online and it appears to allow 15 year olds use equipments as a guest while parent guardian is present. The fact that is disputed is the age requirements of the use of gym equipments. I have repeated asked the staff for a copy of their version of the policy, so I can acknowledge it and leave. the manager however, said they don't have the policy at hand and that I would have to email the General Manager for clarification. I did so and didn't get a response within the hour. I didn't expect to it was after business hours. The staff also stressed that a new policy has been implemented that 15 year olds are no longer allowed to use any equipments. Ultimately, someone in the front desk found a physical copy of the policy and it clearly states that children UNDER 15 year old will not be allowed to use the facility. Being 15, this does not fall into the category of UNDER 15. The staff has done ZERO due diligence in addressing the questions and concerns of guests. That's fine but it's not when they are incorrect and are uninformed. Every single one of the staff I've encountered has told me that 15 year olds are not allowed, contrary to what the policy said after I attempted to show them that they are incorrect, I am dismissed because I have "false information" and they "didn't know where I got my information from". They then acknowledged they were wrong after 30 minutes of back and forth and "confirming" that 15 year olds are allowed. I highly recommend reading all policies prior to committing anything to this equinox for your best interest before you go and let the front desk people to spoon feed you bullshit despite plea to reconfirm. This Gym is extremely unprofessional. Maybe management should retain an attorney or ten to amend the policy if they're that stressed about 15 year olds being in the gym, and maybe explain to the staff what the difference is between "UNDER 15", and "15 AND UNDER". read more

i'm not sure about trusting some of these other reviews on yelp- i think they are biased and/or outdated. i love going to this equinox about every other day for yoga, barre, or pilates classes. you don't need to clean any mats for the rest of your life as long as you come here. there's loads of natural light upstairs by the yoga studio; on nice days we leave the back door open for a breeze of fresh air. after a class i usually take the elevator downstairs to use the stationary bikes. although it is in the lower level, the ceilings are vaulted and the space is massive. no issues with having phone calls either; this isn't any type of basement i've ever been in! there is also a nice fridge of towels to cool you off after workout. the bathrooms are good to me, haven't had any issues with my longchamp bag being stolen in the locker room just because locks aren't provided. i always use the spray deodorant (it smells so good) and am even able to quickly wash my face after workouts with really nice Grown Alchemist products (including face moisturizer!) also shout out to Adina for being the best gym rep always answering my questions via text; very convenient, great customer service!!! read more

I read a really detailed review on Google that wasn't flattering but I thought oh it's Equinox, I'm sure it's fine. I'm here to tell you that this particular Equinox is not fine. Or maybe it is just "fine", but seeing as you're paying more than $200 per month you're going to want it to be more than fine. I was an equinox member from August 31 - October 1 2024. In that time, I went to the gym 8 times. Here is my feedback: 1. The front desk at the staff are not helpful. I heard from another staff member that many people were being trained and they were new. But the front desk staff literally pointed me in the wrong direction to the class I was supposed to attend. This made me late enough to enter the class after it had already started. In addition to being unhelpful/inaccurate, I will also say that I observed front desk staff to be unapproachable. When I was trying to talk to them and waiting at the counter, they were all just chatting with each other. 2. All the best things offered at Equinox cost more money. Yes, more money than your monthly membership fee. I had a great experience trying Pilates with Kayo. She was super meticulous about helping me have good form. My PT session with Maria also went well. I would consider paying for both of their services outside of the equinox branch. 3. The workout classes have too many people in them to be effective. I've attended several barre classes. I also signed up for a weightlifting class. At all of the classes, the instructor is in a large room with a large amount of people. They're good, but they're not good enough to do what's impossible aka help each individual person have good form. They also were not on the lookout for newcomers or ever ask if anybody had a preexisting injury they should know about. (This especially was important to me as I was just starting to work out after having a baby.) I consider this standard trainer etiquette and it isn't observed at Equinox. I also was never welcomed to the class as a new person or welcomed back as a regular attendee so if you're looking to make friends or build a community, then look elsewhere. 4. This doesn't really signify to a gym experience, but while I'm at it and paying $200+ per month, the foyer and staircases look industrial and tired. It's not giving "luxe", "high end", or "exclusive". 5. The contract pricing structure is predatory. It's also not very upfront. It locks you in for a monthly billing cycle for twelve months (a whole year) and the only way to get out in that time period is if you can provide proof of a new address. This is what is on paper, but in practice I was able to get out of my contract. I spoke to the Assistant General Manager Diana and even though I had proof of another address, that became unnecessary. She did try and make it right with me but I had already been burnt out trying to like it and being directed the wrong way in the facilities by unhelpful staff was the final straw. I did have to CC the General Manager Cody before Diana finalized my cancellation. I've heard the San Francisco Equinoxes are better. I toured the Palo Alto Equinox years ago and it left a positive impression on me which influenced my decision to try the San Mateo Equinox. But after my experience, I am in no hurry to try Equinox again. Oh and one final thing. The thing that triggered this essay. When I cancelled my membership (months ago), I asked to be unsubscribed from any and all communication. I asked for my details to be deleted from their records. Guess who just received an email asking to come back for some free trial or something. All in all, not a great experience. read more

The club has yet another new manager, and he has done nothing to correct the situation. I have been on the hunt for a new gym to help elevate my workouts. I just started running about 3 months ago and have made great strides on my own but I was ready to ditch crunch and their basic amenities. I checked out a few speciality gyms and I knew they weren't for me. I need variety and flexibility. I totally forgot about Equinox so I looked them up. It is advertised as a luxury gym so I was a bit weary of what the pricing could be and after reading the reviews I was hesitant to visit, but I know people are more inclined to share a negative experience than a positive one. Here's my opinion: It's $207/month for one gym access! I don't know about you, but thats cheap! I used to pay $165/month for I Love Kickboxing and F45 is offering unlimited circuit/HIIT workouts for $55/week - no other amenities. Martial arts and self-defense programs are just about the same price - so yes, to me that cheap. Equinox offers an interesting mix of classes including my favorite Precision Run (make sure to go to your assigned treadmill or someone random will bish you out - my only negative experience), everyone is friendly and is focused on working out. No awkward stares or sausage fest in the training area. Employees have been nice and approachable. Steam room in the women's locker room and roof top pool is my favorite. And the welcome deals such as a free health assessment, training session, pilates session, and some discounts for spa and shop is nice too. I think some people in the reviews are real picky - I get it if it was way more then the $207 price tag but its a fair price. Maybe the newer Equinox' in other area make the SM one look sad but that just means expectations need to be managed. Perhaps budgeting a mini remodel is something corporate could consider if they make their numbers but what do I know about business. We have been having some intense heat waves in SM and ACs are going down EVERYWHERE. Its the bay area.. we lucky to have buildings with AC because we hardly needed it. Adam from Member Services was a real good sport during our tour; I was pretty direct about the reviews in Yelp and he was real nice about explaining them. Overall, I'm having a good time, classes are really good, everyone is friendly, and it's clean. my only advise is you'll be deeply disappointed if you go in with a microscope mentality. As an Equinox member you come to expect certain things at the club especially when you are use to one of the Sports Clubs. The positives: Parking is generally easy to find and free The outdoor pool! I've been a member since 2009 and have not been impressed in the last year. The hours generally and on the weekends have been cut. Parking has always been bad but is worse now. Classes are overcrowded and the way they now deal with it is by not letting you in! A few months ago I was not allowed to take the class because I (being on time and standing in line to get into the yoga studio) stepped back from the door to let two women in in front of me and apparently those were the last two spaces and the instructor (Juliana) was so incredibly rude! Today I was 4 minutes late looking for parking and another instructor (Jackie) did not let me into the yoga studio because the class just started--she was nicer but it was so upsetting to drive to get turned away like that given the hefty membership fee. If you are not busy and have time and mental energy to sign up for the class in advance on the app (but not too early it has to be 2 days in advance but no earlier), show up early, drive around the parking lot 10 times, elbow your way into a class, and be ok with on occasion being treated with disrespect by instructors, then this is for you. This equinox is not a luxury gym. It has no business using the word "luxury" to describe it. It doesn't matter what day or time you come here, you'll be waiting for machines. The workout area is in a cramped basement with no windows and seems to never have a free bench press or squat rack, among other things. There's some good group classes, but been to much better in SoCal and on east coast. No electronic lockers. No more Kiehl's products (tho that seems to be a company wide thing). First and foremost, this location barely lives up to the Equinox "brand". The workout area is a postage stamp with low ceilings, and to add insult to injury, is underground with no windows; it was like working out in basement. For the outrageous price they charge, I'd imagine they'd provide a better experience than that. Furthermore, the sales staff is incredibly pushy to the point of discomfort. My partner incessantly received texts on Sundays at 7pm pestering them to buy a membership. If you can, I suggest looking elsewhere in San Mateo. read more
