We started taking out cat here last year after a few other Vets. Dr. Khan was the one who helped us and discovered our cat heart disease. She's an amazing Vet and person, she calmed us down, gave great advices and ways to go though this heartbreaking news. Our cat, Daisy, passes away last week and today we received a condolence card from their team. This vet backed up by the second vet that works there gave my cat a steroid to get the fluid surrounding my cat's heart and lung area because he was in heart failure and it killed him. You don't give depoprovera to a cat who is in heart failure because it worsens heart failure as it is a steroid... He went from bad to worse right afterwards because it made his heart fail completely... All vet get to be called doctor because they all graduate from medical school but some of them graduate from the top of their class and others graduate from the bottom of their class Beware. These vets seem to have graduated from the bottom of their class. If they did not know that would make his heart fail completely... They should have given him Lasix.​ read more

I just moved from the South Bay and Peninsula was recommended. I needed to get in quickly for rabies and vaccinations for my pup. All went well, when I got there I was greeted by staff. It was busy, and I waited a tad longer. But it didn't matter, I really liked Dr. Ulla. She was personable. She got down on her knees to greet my dog who is 46 pounds. The front desk is terrible, they're bad at answering the phone and if you get a hold of someone it's somehow worse, bc they are so unhelpful it's just a waste of time talking to anyone. The vets are even worse then the front bc they're more interested in making money than in providing good care for pets. Would not recommend this vet to anyone. If you're looking for a caring vet's office, I highly recommend Peninsula Pet Hospital. Their staff is welcoming and friendly. You can tell everyone there really cares about the patients and they always treated my 11 year old dog Maddie very well. Sadly we recently found out that she had bone cancer and there wasn't much we could do to save her quality of life. She was my first dog so deciding on when and how to euthanize her was really difficult. I decided to make an appointment with Peninsula Pet Hospital and I'm so glad I did. They gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye and treated us and her with the upmost respect. We have a new rescue dog, BiBi, and were looking for a new veterinarian. Calling around, some local vets had no availability for new wellness checks for 3 months. I called peninsula pet hospital and they said they could see us next day. What I loved about them was that they let us bring our dog into the clinic. It wasn't curbside drop off like I've heard about at a lot of vets during Covid. I read a local clinic had a dog get run over during the handoff which is just so tragic. Not here. They have you bring the dog in from the parking lot. The receptionist was very courteous and was great at putting our anxious dog at ease. We were called shortly after drop off by our vet, Dr. Foley. She was very helpful and didn't rush us at all. She answered all of our questions and had some great recommendations. She didn't push any treatments and actually told us our options on some preventative care. Never tried to upsell anything. The kicker? I was ready to pay at checkout. They didn't even charge us for the checkup. They said it was complimentary because BiBi is a rescue dog. Really love this first appointment. We took our two senior cats here for a little over a year before deciding to switch vets, and are now driving our cats 25 min away to a different vet instead of the 5 min drive it used to take to get here. Things started okay with Dr. Harish. One cat was diagnosed with early kidney disease in March 2020, and we put her on kidney care food. Then both cats were diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in December 2020. Dr. Harish walked us through options and we began care. Then things started getting frustrating. We'd take the cats in every few months for bloodwork, and the advice was always to change nothing about their care. We'd try really hard to extract meaningful information on how things were going. There were times that it felt like we were the ones prescribing care to our cats, or reminding them of what care plan we had previously agreed upon. Overall, it felt like the plan was conservative, that they wouldn't volunteer any information unless asked, and that they weren't keeping a proactive eye out for our cats. In June 2021, we decided to get a second opinion. Since then, we've seen another vet and gone to the emergency room, and we are so glad that we moved on from Peninsula Pet Hospital. The new vet said the hyperthyroidism prescription we were following was the "lowest I've ever heard of." They also said that one of the cats didn't seem to actually be suffering from hyperthyroidism, and was likely suffering from something else since her liver levels were more consistently elevated. They gave her the most thorough physical exam I've observed from a vet, which resulted in them not only advising us that she had lost significant weight over the last year, but also that there was a likely dangerous mass growing in her abdomen. We scheduled an ultrasound, and it turns out it's a nearly 2 inch cancerous carcinoma growth on her liver. I don't completely hold Peninsula Pet Hospital accountable for the cats' current health; a lot could have happened in the two months it took us to switch vets, and I know I could have kept a better eye on the cats' weights myself. But I do hold vets accountable for being proactive in offering options, trying to get ahead of risks in senior cats, and acting as a partner for our cats' health. Why was their weight never checked when taking bloodwork? Why weren't we encouraged to do parallel diagnostic screens while we tried treating for hyperthyroidism (like an ultrasound) to explain the elevated liver values? Why weren't we advised to do a full senior panel after 6 months of hyperthyroidism treatment? You can do much better than this vet, especially if you want more than cursory check-ups. read more

We were fortunate to have Peninsula Pet Hospital as our Yorkie's vet during her senior years. Dr. Harish, Dr. Ulla, and the entire staff are knowledgable, patient, and down-to-earth good people who really love their furry patients. With previous vets, I never felt completely comfortable with the information I received and always felt like they were more interested in making money instead of the overall current and preventative care of your pup. After going to Peninsula Pet Hospital, I always felt comfortable and ensured that our little Cookie was getting the best care with her exams, vaccinations, and leg surgery. The doctors always explained any care with why it mattered and also sharing options so that we could make the best decision together. The front desk staff are efficient, on top of things, and always kind. They made things like getting necessary info required for our pet insurance, making/changing appts, and getting a hold of the doctors a breeze. I woke up early this morning because I missed my 10-year-old so much. I decided to leave this review because I thought it is the right thing to do. My family's golden doodle has been Dr.Harish's patient since he became part of my family. It is true that Dr. Harish has been offering excellent care for him. However, his recommendation on steroid treatment on 11/18/2022 took his life away on 11/26/2022. I noticed in October that my boy had sinus issue, discharging mucus from his nose. Dr. Harish performed nasal rhinoscopy on 11/2/2022 along with other tests. Chest X-ray result was "clean lungs". He took biopsy of his nostril. However, that night, chunk of tissue came out from his nostril. I had to take him back the next day and Dr.Harish had to put him under sedation again to remove the tissue. From 11/2/2022, I gave my dog antibiotics. Biopsy result offered no meaningful information. Mucus issue stayed. I really wanted to cure this for my boy. So, I asked Dr. Harish for an expert recommendation. He proposed steroid treatment. I asked him if I can stop giving him antibiotics once we switched to steroids. His response was "Yes". I made the switch on 11/19/2022. He was healthy and perfect until 11/24/2022. From 11/25/2022, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He lost his appetite and had hard time breathing in the afternoon. I texted Dr.Harish at 11AM and 2PM about the situation. His response was he can check him on 11/28/2022. After 7PM, I drove to ERs desperate to cure his condition. They were all asking for my decision for expensive tests first. Though it was Thanksgiving holiday, I had to call Dr.Harish. I called numerous times, sent a text message, and left him a voice mail. I needed his input right away because I had no idea back then that the test results 3 weeks ago from Dr.Harish could become irrelevant so quickly. I did not get any response from him. Finally, at 3AM on 11/26/2022 at the 3rd ER place that I visited with my wife, vet there explained to us very clearly possible root causes of his problem and the required tests. This was what I tried so hard to get from Dr.Harish from 9PM on 11/25/2022 but could not. We signed up for the tests instantly. The test result at 5AM however was devastating. Our boy was diagnosed with septic pneumonia and 2/3 of his lung was already not functioning. There was nothing we could do but to end his suffering. I woke my daughter up at home, drove her to ER, and we bid final farewell to our beloved boy. He passed away shortly before 6AM on 11/26/2022. The question my wife and I asked ER doctor was how can this all happen in a single day. We just could not understand this. In one day, our beloved boy passed away and my daughter lost her other half. ER doctor told us that there is always a risk of bacteria going in the lung without any resistance during sedation. He may have been healthy after Dr.Harish's procedure because he was on antibiotics. There is a possibility that as soon as he stopped taking antibiotics and switched to steroids, it drastically reduced his immunity and as a result remnant of bacteria started building up from 11/19, multiplying exponentially leading to septic pneumonia. I understand that vets and doctors are not God, so they cannot predict everything. However, if such risk of steroids is commonly known in the field, Dr.Harish should have taken proper due diligence assessing the risk. He should have explained this to me thoroughly and tested our boy for any bacterial issues before making the recommendation as he knew about the complications that our boy had. Or the least he could have done was saying "No" when I asked him if I can stop giving antibiotics when switching to steroids. I accepted his proposal only because I trusted him wholeheartedly, not having any clue whatsoever that this treatment was going to take his life away after 7 days. My family has been devastated since 11/26/2022. My wife and I suddenly lost our second child and my daughter is in grave pain losing her other half. She has gone through many tough times in her life and the only thing in this world that enabled her to go through it all was him. They have been siblings, growing up together. Last night, she told me that he actually had 2-3 years left in him. We would always talk about bringing him to her college graduation ceremony. But all that was taken away from both him and her by Dr.Harish not doing his job properly. She asked me knowing this, how can she accept this whole situation, be in peace, and move on. The more I think about the whole situation, the more I agree with my daughter. My decision to accept Dr.Harish's steroid treatment 10 days ago will haunt me for a very long time. He utterly failed us as our vet by not doing a proper risk assessment on steroid treatment. Had he done this, my family would still be enjoying our normal life with our boy. Had he responded to my desperate calls on 11/25/2022, at least we could have ended his suffering little earlier. read more

I would advise you against taking your pet to Peninsula Pet Hospital if you are in a dire situation and in need of specialty care. This is what happened when I visited them on Funni's last day: Without telling us, Dr. Ulla went home during the appointment. She let me take my beloved pet to an emergency hospital her last night. Funni had kidney disease and her BUN (blood urea nitrogen) level was 180 - through the roof. The emergency room vet said it was no use, but I left her there for a few hours. When I picked her up again, she couldn't stand. Her legs gave, and she couldn't open her eyes straight. I rushed to have her put down that day. Had Dr. Ulla had any sense, she would have let me know how bad it was. I could have spent my dog's last night holding her. Dr. Ulla should have let me know she's not qualified to handle our situation. She wasted our time and then pointed us in the wrong direction. She took the last night I had with my beloved Funni away from me. Do NOT go to Peninsula Pet Hospital if you need a specialist or are in need of intensive care. They will literally take your beloved pet's last night away from you. And they will harass you on yelp if you write about it. They have repeatedly checked off this review as being "funny". Heartless, pitiful souls. I highly recommend going to a different vet hospital. Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos is a good choice. read more

This review is for a laparoscopic spay procedure we recently had done for our puppy at this facility. Pluses: - very reasonable prices (albeit laparoscopic spay is an expensive procedure). I called around and this was the only place that quoted me something that was on par with what I've heard being quoted by dog owners from other major cities (a little over $1k depending on dog's weight). Other places I called quoted me over $3k which is just insane, considering a regular spay is about $500. This is the bay area so you expect things to be more expensive, but come on. - I talked to Dr. Harish and asked him some questions about the procedure and he responded with a very gentle and reassuring manner, with comments about risk and benefits and allowing me to make my own decision. Bedside manners is so important for doctors and caretakers, especially during these anxiety inducing situations where you want to make the best decision for your pet, and talking to Dr. Harish put me at ease. - I brought my dog in at 8:30, left at 9am, and Dr. Harish called me at noon to let me know that the procedure went normally and that I could pick her up by 1:30. So great to know that she wasn't being kept there for more than what was necessary! Cons: - the only feedback I have is that I wish the discharge instructions were better to help set expectations on how to care for your pet at home after anesthesia. While I was really glad to take my pet home ASAP and let her wake up in the comfort of her own home and be with her to help calm her, I had to call the office twice to ask about symptoms and whether they were normal (e.g. increased heart rate, apparently normal after anesthesia, and loud gurgling in her stomach, apparently from the gas they put in her to visualize her). I also just had to search online myself for symptoms of anesthesia to understand why my puppy wasn't making eye contact with me and acted so differently, and learned that it goes away after 12-24 hours. All of this would have been nice to have in a take-home pamphlet of "what to expect in caring for a pet recovering from anesthesia". All in all, I was glad I took my dog here for the procedure. read more

Took my pug in after a long night of worrying about his limping, Almost went in to the palo alto emergency clinic but emailed peninsula pet hospital late eve in hopes of getting a next day appt.- Carol (?) )called first thing in the morning- super chipper and friendly saying they could have me come in an hour from then, or at 3pm or 4pm. I took the 3 pm and had amazing service. Lots of parking space, and safe area. Got right in, and the staff looked over my previous vet paperwork (just moved so had 7 years worth of forms-- quite the pile and both the dr. and front desk helped sort thru it all) They took good care of him and the bill was super reasonable -- had his nails and ears treated and the dr even went outside after the appt so we could double check his limping( turned out to be an ingrown toenail) No pressure/upselling for other things he didnt need and I have an appt to go back for a checkup/toenail trim in 2 weeks. Our Siberian Husky puppy Bishop has been coming to see the wonderful staff at Peninsula Pet Hospital since we brought him home from the breeder. The Doctors and staff are so friendly and genuine. Once you walk in, you are instantly greeted with a warm welcome and the Vets are always gentle when handling Bishop. Our pup actually loves coming her because of all the love he gets, not to mention, top notch care. In addition, since this is our first pup, we have a lot of questions due to us being paranoid about every little thing our pup does. Every time we have called in to inquire about a concern, their staff has been able to provide us with the appropriate answers in a timely manner and great advice. I don't know why this place has such high reviews. I should have written this review months ago but I have still been mourning my cat. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE A SERIOUSLY ILL PET. They do not know anything! I took my cat in about 5 times in a two month span. They ran a blood test then told me they didn't test for everything and I paid for another more extensive test. They also did an X-ray upon my request bc I thought something was wrong with his breathing. After 2 or 3 rounds of antibiotics they prescribed steroids for no reason at all. Blue got worse after that. I took him to another vet in foster city called Animal Cove and the vet there looked at his blood tests that peninsula had done and immediately diagnosed him with FIP and said to take him off the steroids immediately. FIP is an incurable disease but it can lay dormant and cats can live with it. It was too late for Blue and I wish I would have seen Animal Cove sooner, maybe the steroids were what pushed him over the edge. He was only 5 years old. Another thing that irritates my soul about these people is that they all show no empathy!! I brought in my bengal kitten and everyone is all oh so cute! But my cat Blue no one seemed to care about. The woman at the front counter with the fake color contacts in her eyes is also a total c. The two main vets who don't know anything are also the owners, great. This place is over priced and the people are just awful. Just because they are in Menlo Park does not make them great. I wonder how many sick animals they have murdered and don't care about. read more

Booked an appointment for a Monday with a specific vet as she was recommended to me, I called the same day to confirm the time of the appointment and they say they don't have any appointment scheduled for me that day or any other day and that the specific vet was not working in the time of my appointment anyway. I feel like they are not serious at all and don't give reliable information. I wanted to switch to a new vet but I'm never going to waste my time with them again. I take my large Rottweiler here who has recurring GI issues and I always receive professional and quality care. The veterinarians recommended to change dog food, and a few other remedies. Since then our rottie has been doing great with zero GI issues. I was orally quoted one fee for some tests and elected to proceed based on that cost, and then when I went to pick up my dog, they demanded approximately 5x the original quote to get the dog back. I had no choice but to pay but won't go back again. Shame on me I guess for not getting the quote in writing, but I don't feel like it should have to operate that way with a vet. I've been taking my dogs here for the last 4 + years. My big baby is now a 14 year old lady. I've had a ton of issues with vets in the past because of her breed. Yep, you guessed it. She's a pitbull. Not only have they accepted her, they have taken great care of her. Poor dog has had 2 knee surgeries and several things happen. Today, I brought her in without an appointment. She was feeling very... very ill. Eyes were darting back and forth, puking, falling over... Needless to say, I was very, very scared. Dr. Harish assessed the problem of course. Every time I bring her here, she's always calm. Dr. Harish never makes her feel nervous at all. She's calm to begin with but she pretty much lets him do whatever he needs. She just trusts him. The entire staff is just wonderful. They all know her (probably too well at this point) and seem to enjoy her when she's there. Best part, as I was leaving today, the tech at the front desk (I feel so horrible for never grabbing names) told me about a rebate program for the medication that my dog's been on for the last 3 years. She went as far as printing all of my previous receipts that had the medication on there so I can submit for rebates. Who does that???? She really didn't have to and I think telling me about the rebate program alone was just awesome news. I trust the staff with my dogs. For those of you who've mentioned that some of the staff seemed snooty, there has been staff changes (from what I can tell) seems like the last few times I've been there, there was an unfamiliar face. Sadie hearts the COOKIES at Peninsula Pet Hospital! ;) Come on, like she'd really enjoy getting prodded, weighed, poked, medicine rubbed in her eyes, etc. As my earlier review indicates, my special little Sadie can get herself into some interesting situations. She likes to run. She likes to play. Sometimes she's been bit. Sometimes she bites. Sometimes she gets scratched. Sometimes her breath stinks. Sometimes she needs vaccinations. Sometimes she just needs confirmation that all is OKAY. They're fabulous all the way around. It doesn't hurt that instead of having to hop in our car to get there, I strap on Sadie's leash and we walk a few minutes and we're there .... Okay, we walk a few seconds... I brought my dog here for a check up and to get more Heartgaard. Pretty much a waste of time. We waited 30 min to see the Vet (granted another dog has passed). He checked her eyes and legs and 5 min later we were out the door $120 bucks poorer ($60 for the heartgaard, $60 for the visit). Funny how the Vet is just like going to the regular doctor..... Where my little girl comes to get checkups and fixups. It's a bit of a hike for us but since my girlfriend takes her dog there..and has for years, when we first got our pup, I wanted to go somewhere that we already trusted. And we just have been going there since. Dr. Cortesis my pup's vet of choice...he seems to be a little warmer and friendlier than Dr. Shapiro though lets face it...they both prod the dogs and stick needles in them so neither of them are high up on a pup's list of fave people, BUT our little girl shakes a lot less when she sees Dr. Cortesi. We can always get an appt when we need to, they are fab over the phone when you call in to just get some advice on a problem. They also don't over-advocate visits, aka you don't call asking for advice and be told to come in and see a Dr...at $50 a pop it can be pricey. They are great about saying 'well monitor her and do XYZ and then call us if she doesn't improve'. The facility itself is quite nice, clean, lots of parking, easy to find location. The staff is always friendly and amazingly enough they tend to remember your pup even if you haven't been there for almost a year! Only downer is that treatment is typically expensive..a visit is about $50 even if it's only 5 minutes, and then to get meds it's typically another $50. Once she was allergic to the first set of $50 meds they gave us, so we had to pay another $50 for a set of meds and we just tossed the first set with no reimbursement. We also recently had her teeth cleaned and I think it was $400 total. But her breath was so much better it was worth it. However, good incentive to try to brush her teeth more ourselves for sure. read more

I've been here with my dog at least three times and have had other communication with them (phone and email), and unfortunately my visits haven't been great at all. When I get there, on two occasions I've stood at the entrance for about 5 minutes until someone acknowledges I'm there with my dog. Their door has a bell on it to indicate I'm there, but no one even makes eye contact. It's really strange and pretty unbelievable. The staff that manage the front desk aren't friendly and make it seem like I'm interrupting their time. Well, I think it's time to find a new vet! LOVE... LOVE... LOVE them!!! Dr. Harish has been Vinnie's (a Boxer) vet since he was a puppy. We used to see him at Holly Street. I was very happy when we found out he was still local. We immediately moved Vinnie to his new office. Dr. Harish ALWAYS makes the right decision for Vinnie and does not EVER add on extra services that are not needed just to pay the bills. He never does needless procedures and evaluates him on his needs and what is best for him. He knows his breeds well and is always careful about the quarks of each breed and dog... Vinnie has his quarks and Dr. Harish knows all of them. Vinnie has seen him for 6 years and has had the best care I could ever ask for. He has had a couple surgeries and one off odd ball stuff and I always know that he will get the best care there. Dr. Harish will always answers my questions and is quick to return a call. When Vinnie had cancer last year, Dr, Harish did his research, consulted an Oncologist to find the best option to treat his cancer. The most common treatment would have been for Vinnie to lose his leg, but because of the care that he has for his patients, he found that Radiation was an option. He called and let us know, had the Oncologist lined up and helped us through the process. He checking in with us on his progress along the way. With all the time Vinnie has spent there, you would think he would hate going to the vet like most dogs do... but no! He loves it. When we pull in the driveway he is up butt/ nubby tail wagging ready to go in and see everyone. He is pulling and running to the door to get in. I think he looks forward to sneaking in a kiss for Dr. Harish (he gets him every time!). The staff is fantastic as well. They are so friendly and helpful. They are so good with all the animals that come in. You build a relationship with them and you don't feel like just another patient, but a part of the great family they have built. I am very protective of Vinnie, but I never worry when I take him here. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a trustworthy vet who will take great care of your baby and not feel like they ran you over when you get the bill... or try to sell you "add on's or other unneeded services" read more

Dr. Foley is amazing! Make sure you get her. Not only is her bedside manner with the animals super loving and gentle, but she is very knowledgeable and thorough and won't push you into the most expensive treatment option. read more

My sister stepped on something a couple of weeks ago and it hurt her like heck!!! Her foot got swollen and kept on getting bigger than all my feet put together. I told her 'bout this place so she and I went last Monday. Dr. Harish was really nice and the front receptionist was really nice as well. He fixed my sister up really well and she just fell in love with him!!! She started getting really dreamy eyes and I had to bite her to remind her he's already taken. Besides, our parents would never allow it since were still way too young fer anything like that. Anyways, that was last Monday and her foot is all better now. She was SSssooo scared she'd lose that sexy walk of hers. Hooray for Peninsula Pet Hospital/Dr. Harish and receptionist. Oh, we both got snacksl out of the deal too. read more

Great place, great service, fare prices. My dog loves coming here and it's such a relief to find a place that treats my dog and ME well after going to the other place down the road: Mid-Peninsula Animal Hospital. Their names sound very similar, but they are world's apart. THIS place is five star, happy times for pets and their owners/people. I took my cat to this place based on so many positive reviews. I should have read ALL the reviews before going here. Then I would have been better prepared for the very negative vibes I was getting from the receptionist. Someone said the receptionist was very snooty and condescending. I now know what they meant. It's a little disconcerting handing over my credit card and personal information to someone who has decided to send out such negative energy. I am always suspicious of women who wear so much make up. In fairness though, Dr. Harish was very good with my cat. He identified a UTI and wisely suggested bloodwork for my cat. After the blood tests came back he asked me to bring her in to stay overnight on IV fluids. The next day I was able to take her home after a total of over $600 in vet bills. However, my cat was sooooo much better when I got her back. Her appetite was back, she was more energetic and interactive, and now follows me around for attention like she used to. I was also pleased with the veterinary technician who showed me how to do an IV needle for her in case she needed fluids at home. I would have given 4 stars, or even considered 5 stars if the receptionist didn't have such an attitude. But I can't give those high ratings when I seriously doubt I will return to this place. 4 stars for Dr. Harish and his male assistant, 2 stars for the receptionist with the attitude, averages out to 3 stars. If you go there, I hope the receptionist treats you courteously. For some reason she chose not to for me. read more

This is our new vet and now all our animals have come here. I have seen 3 different veterinarians and all listened, respected our concerns and gave us great advice and our pets great care. They helped us with our cat at his end of days and our new puppy. I think they are just great. I find the costs reasonable and while sometime it is hard to get an appointment, everything runs like clockwork once you do for the first and any follow up visits. The parking is easy, the facility clean and the staff awesome. We have an AmStaff and they treat him just as he treats everyone, with love, respect and lots of attention.
