Our 6 year old dog Ruby was completely lame.... Unable to walk, clearly in pain...I took her to a rehab center in LA and wasted a year before going to see orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bear at Sage. I hate to write a bad review, but I also feel compelled to warn others so that they don't have the same experience that we did. I will not share the entire saga, but here is what I will say: - I do not know if SAGE's clinical choices were sound, as I am not a vet. What I do know is that they were not successful, and resulted in the death of a relatively young (6 year old) cat who did not appear to be *that sick*. - The care that was provided - which took place over the course of less than 12 hours and did not involve any surgery resulted in bills exceeding $7,000. - After the traumatic experience, SAGE was focused purely on payment, and not at all on condolences. They immediately charged the credit card on file and sent multiple emails with invoices (which were unclear and in some cases contradictory). When I arrived to pick up the cat's ashes the person at the front desk looked at the computer and said "you have an outstanding balance of $400; would you like to pay that now?" She did not say "I'm sorry for your loss" and instead just straight to asking for more money. When I pushed back she said "that's our protocol." Yes, clearly it is. - They made many administrative errors throughout the process, which I will not go into because for those they have apologized, but there were so many that I felt embarassed for them. But I've now contacted them multiple times with one simple request: please send me one invoice that is complete and accurate. My requests have gone unanswered. Perhaps because they have already received payment, they are no longer concerned with me, but it's actually pretty outlandish. They charged over $7,000 (I think - it's actually hard to tell because again, the charges and invoices are not clear or complete) and can't be bothered with giving me a clear answer. I am truly not sure how any business can get away with operating this way, but apparently SAGE can. I'm sure they do some good work. I'm sure there are many good people who work there and care a lot about animals. But based on our experience, it feels like incompetent adminstration at best and a scam at worst. I know that when your pet needs emergency care you may not have a lot of options, but if you do, I suggest that you try to go elsewhere. read more

$600 bill for a simple ear infection. AVOID if you don't like being fleeced. I took my senior dog to SAGE Emergency Vet around 10:40 pm for a painful ear infection. I was willing to pay the $255 emergency fee so she wouldn't suffer overnight. After all, it was just a typical ear infection and everyone knows its not a huge deal and just requires drops. When I arrived, the clinic was nearly empty. Another client who came in after me was seen first, while I was still sitting there waiting with my dog in the back. That person came and went yet I was till there. The vet eventually confirmed the ear infection and said they'd clean it and send me home with ear drops, as I figured. For some reason, I continued to wait almost another full hour with no explanation (total visit 2 hours). I was still sitting there waiting after paying the bill until I finally had to insist they return my dog to me because I had work in the morning and i wouldn't get home till 1am. The bill was absolutely outrageous for basic care, even at an emergency vet: Around $600 total..... for a simple ear infection! Breakdown: * $255 emergency visit fee for the exam (no issue here, I understand the premium for the emergency visit) However.... * $83 to irrigate the ear * $154 to look in a microscope * $100 for the ear drops. These exact same ear drops (Baytril Otic 15ml) sell for $25 on Chewy. A 400% mark up over retail??? Worse still, the overpriced drops were not the correct meds and didn't even work. A week later I had to go to my regular vet and spend even more to actually clear the infection which SAGE failed to do, though thankfully, my regular vet didn't rip me off like SAGE did. This was price gouging combined with poor service. I will never return and strongly recommend others go elsewhere for emergencies. Read the other 1-3 star reviews for similar experiences. read more

I had a very difficult experience with this SAGE emergency vet services, and I feel conflicted about how to review them because there were both compassionate and deeply frustrating aspects of my time with them. First, I want to acknowledge that the staff were kind, gentle, and clearly cared about both me and my cat. During an incredibly emotional time, they treated us with empathy, and I'm grateful for that. However, my cat was in renal failure, and I don't feel that I was ever given a clear or honest understanding of how serious her condition truly was. I was repeatedly told that her situation was treatable, particularly once she started eating again. She ended up staying there for three nights, and while I was told she had begun eating at the clinic, when I brought her home she still wasn't eating and was in very poor condition. What's most difficult for me is that she passed away the day after I brought her home, after I had spent nearly $16,000 on her care. Looking back, I strongly wish someone had been more candid with me about her prognosis and whether euthanasia might have been the most humane option. I feel like I wasn't given the information I needed to make an informed decision about her end-of-life care. I don't doubt the compassion of the staff, but I do wish there had been clearer communication and more medical guidance during such a critical time. For anyone going through something similar, I would encourage asking very direct questions about prognosis and quality of life, as I wish I had been guided more firmly in that direction. read more

Dr. Navreet Saini was an excellent internist that I would recommend without hesitation she was extremely attentive professional she was clean she was well dressed. She treated me my friend and My dog! with dignity she did not judge or discriminated against us as we experienced at Sage with Christina Wong in the ER. She also picked up a nose tumor which was missed by Dr.Jurney while she was busy flirting or so it appeared with her nasty redhead girlfriend. I have seen a lot of doctors and I have to say that Dr.Saini is a class at I couldn't ask for more for My dog! and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to you because she will provide your dog with or liar with top-notch service She was calm and displayed the confidence of somebody who knew what they were logging and handled my dog with ease and care. It really shocks me the disparity between the level of care you can get a different places so I've included my experience with some other doctors and how they behave and so you can see how important it is if you want good care to do your research.. read more

Hi, Last year 2025 both of my dogs had unexpected health issues. One had its gall bladder removed and it is considered a major surgery. My dog has healed since now but taking a prescription and on special diet for life. My second dog suffered from kidney disease and high blood pressure. She is doing better but still undergoing treatments. The doctors were very knowledgeable and professional. Thank you Sage! I also like to thank Jack & Richard for valet parking my car. Avoid this place if you love your pet! I wish I had read all the negative reviews before we went. Our dog lost use of her hind legs and we took her for an urgent care appointment. We were seen by a vet who was barely 2 years out of school and in a rush to get to his next appointment. He gave us an incorrect diagnosis and said just the dog is old, just let the dog rest. Come back in a week we can try to fit you in with our very busy neurologist to examine. Our dog continued to get significantly worse over the next two days and luckily we sought a second opinion. The second vet was appalled at the fact that our dog hadn't been referred for an immediate MRI as she was deteriorating and it was an emergency situation, possibly requiring surgery. We were referred to an excellent vet neurologist in San Francisco who conducted an MRI and ruled out surgery but suggested a medication course for her inflammation. Our dog started improving on these meds on a day or two and is hopefully getting back to normal. If we had relied on Sages awful advice she might have died. Will never go to this place again. They are understaffed and are only looking for throughout to rack up fees, not interested in the dogs. Ironically if they had made an effort they would have made more money given that we had ti conduct an MRI etc. would much rather pay a vet who cares and is actually looking to treat our pet. I just had the most horrible experience with Sonia in the Neurology Department; up to now our experience at Sage was wonderful, we felt trust had been established. Unfortunately, Sonia's lack of empathy, active listening and decision to task first, left me frustrated and more anxious as I tried to advocate for my pet. It's now been 5 months since my dog had surgery at SAGE, and I wanted to share my very positive experience. My dog had bilateral anal gland removal surgery with Dr. Bugman. I found Dr. Bugman to be wonderful during our consult appointment. She really explained everything in an easy to follow way, and set clear expectations. She also made some optional recommendations that she did not pressure me to take, but that I very much appreciated her bringing up and did take advantage of. The surgery day was stressful for me as a nervous dog mom, but I appreciated the communication I received. The technician who checked us in for surgery was so kind and welcoming, and that helped ease some of my anxiety, and Dr. Bugman called with a thorough update after surgery. My dog has kidney disease, which meant she had to stay overnight in the hospital. My dog can be quite anxious when left in a cage, but from her medical record and from the communication I received, I could tell they took wonderful care of her. She received appropriate sedative medication to allow her to rest, and the technicians even told me they were letting her sit on their laps and be carried around the hospital when possible. When I came to pick up my dog the next day, the technician who discharged us was very thorough and knowledgeable. She had been involved in my dog's surgery so was able to tell me a lot of details, and she even showed me a sweet picture of my dog being carried around by one of the technicians. I really appreciated this kindness! The hospital was thorough and prepared, so they had my dog's medications ready for us, and very easy-to-follow discharge instructions. They even provided us with heat and ice pads to use at home to promote healing. Our follow-up appointment with Dr. Bugman was helpful as Dr. Bugman was able to reassure me that my dog's healing was on the right path. She was again very approachable and knowledgeable. We ended up having to come in again later because my dog was having a mild reaction to one of her sutures (no fault of the medical care, just something that happens sometimes!) We saw Dr. Wilson and she was equally as kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. It was obvious she had thoroughly reviewed my dog's medical record before we arrived, and she managed to skillfully remove the suture that was causing the problem, which I so appreciated! Lastly, I found the front desk and receptionist team to be very kind as well. They were always welcoming and eager to answer my questions, both in person and over the phone. Since recovering from surgery, my dog has been doing wonderful, and even though I was nervous about this surgery, I am so glad we went through with it. If I had to do it all over again, I would, and I would come back to SAGE and Dr. Bugman again! I feel very lucky to have SAGE as a great resource in my community, and would highly recommend them to other pet parents. read more

I am still disturbed by my experience at SAGE. My 15-year-old Chihuahua mix was lethargic and had stopped eating. After a 6-hour wait, the vet claimed he was near DEATH due to low blood sugar and insisted on a $5,000-$10,000 overnight dextrose treatment. They pressured me by saying he would have a seizure and DIE if I took him home, yet they refused to do an ultrasound first to rule out any other possibilities, because "no technicians were on staff" at an emergency hospital. I chose to take him home to say goodbye. Not only did he survive the night, but when I returned the next morning, his sugar levels were normal. I waited another 7 hours for an inconclusive ultrasound, only to be pressured to euthanize him. Monday morning I took him to my regular vet, who explained his sugar had simply dipped because he hadn't eaten. After a simple course of antibiotics and a low-fat diet, he is back to his happy self. SAGE is owned by JAB Holding Company (a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm), and it shows. They prioritize "money grabs" over proper diagnostics. They are understaffed on medical personnel but fully staffed at the front desk to collect your payment. Avoid this place in an emergency. read more

I cannot thank the team at SAGE enough for saving our boy's life. Our cat was diagnosed with a suspected case of FIP, which has a 95% mortality rate if left untreated. The team here acted immediately to ensure he received the urgent care he needed. I am incredibly grateful for the efforts of Dr. Mihalek, Dr. Gelatos, and Dr. Roberts. Never come here. My dog was left with sutures for months between two toes after an amputation. Discovered due to grooming. During 2nd post op visit I was told that all sutures were removed. Sages's solution was to tell me they manager would speak to staff. Then advise I not return as I have lost trust in them. My pup had a reaction to an annual vaccine and needed urgent/emergency care. I had called 3 other veterinary clinics who were booked and unavailable but still recommended I seek emergency care for my pup. So I called SAGE and appreciated their phone service as I talked to them about their process with emergency care services. They started the process over the phone so we didn't have to worry about the whole check in as a new client when we arrived. Be mentally prepared that one of the emergency questions involves DNR (do not resuscitate) status if something were to occur during the visit. This question is very important to know and the animal handler/parent must be mentally prepared to answer because it may not be an easy to make such a decision for an animal who is also family. Over the phone, they let us know about how many other animals were ahead of us so we got a sense of time frame to be seen. Their center had plenty of parking and their waiting area is spacious. They also have complimentary coffee/water as you and your animal waits. The vet technologists were friendly and kind to my pup while obtaining history. The only part I didn't like was being separated from my pup when the technologist took my pup to the back for during the exam and tests. I did appreciate the vet speaking with me after his initial exam followed by explaining the test results that were done. I also appreciated the vet talking me through the options for treatment so that the best decision can be made. The nurses then provided the estimate of cost. About 2 and half hours later, we were able to go home. I appreciated the printed visit summary with invoice that I requested in order to submit to insurance. Took my cat for the radioactive thyroid procedure. I immediately felt at ease and like the technician actually cared about my cat beyond it just being "work". I know they're generally very expensive, but this procedure was less all around. They were clean, professional and know the process. She wants so eagerly to trust that people are kind but 5 years after coming home with me she still can't quite get there. Dr Bugman's patience and light energy helps to reassure my baby and despite the circumstances that bring us here, it's a wonderful feeling knowing that her same surgeon from a few years back is here to receive her with care. This time around, my dog has had a large wound on her tail and while I would love to make the decision to amputate, it's a steep financial decision considering that she is expected to fully heal and has nearly complete loss of feeling in her tail anyway and doesn't feel any pain. "Your dog has cancer" is never what you want to hear, but hearing it from a team just as dedicated as me when it comes to the health of my dog meant the world to me. Working with the oncology team has been amazing. This may not be the cheapest option locally, but it is by far the team I would choose for my dog any day as someone who wants to fight with/for him. I feel so informed, I haven't felt any shame for any tough decisions to be made, I cannot recommend this place enough when it comes to treatment and attentive staff! Dr Mikey especially seems to be my dogs favorite, but our pup walks into every appointment with a smile on his face pumped to see his friends like he doesn't even know he's on chemo :) read more

Updating because I'm still so happy with the care my Gretchen received last week at Sage! I took her in for a limp and Dr. Hughes once again was amazing and explained everything SO well. I had to bring Gretchen back later in the week to get sedated and I was way more scared than she was (naturally), but everyone there reassured me everything was going to be fine. She was seen by Dr Mary Anne and I instantly felt comfortable and glad that Gretchen was in her care all day. She's now healing at home after unremarkable X-rays :) I will never hesitate to bring any of my fur babies to Sage because they've been amazing. read more

So many reasons to leave a 1 star review. Unfortunately, 1 star is far too generous, just look at the other horrific reviews on here. - The entire experience was extremely unprofessional all the way from moment it started until the end of visit. Horrible experience. DO NOT GO HERE. - Cost was exorbitant and punitive - Staff extremely demanding about payment multiple times, even after I agreed and they had said I didn't have to place deposit (was waiting on them for a revised invoice) - Front desk staff acted like used car salesman trying to upsell and force services on me after I refused multiple times - Nurse flat refused to send the Dr back in because "they're busy" after handing me an estimate for thousands of dollars without verifying what services were actually needed - Front desk could not figure out how to remove services that were declined and kept pushing them - Front desk extremely rude and completely unknowledgeable about basic things (E.g., why can't you find my appointment when it was made 30 min prior and Sage asked me to come here at this specific time?) - Ultimately, when I asked for an update after spending the whole day in there and being the only visible person left in the building, Sage couldn't even tell me what was happening with my pet even though they had finished 15 minutes prior. Because they couldn't explain, I asked for my pet back. Only then did the results and updates magically appear out of thin air. Coincidence? - Dr Harris and Coral at reception were great. They were amazing with our dog who was diagnosed with cancer in her chest. The vets were amazing!! I highly recommend Sage in Redwood City.

Sage front desk customer service is horrible The staff argues with you when they make a mistake and take the stance that they are correct and that you are incorrect. It is a horrible experience at the front desk and Redwood City in particular is the worst. We are customers pay the bills that find their paychecks and they have the audacity to argue with customers regarding charges for your beloved pets. I have seen it multiple times again and again and have had it happen to me again and again so as pet owners we should demand the staff to me over qualified and have the best customer service or they don't get our money. I think we are better off going to VCA in San Carlos or another ER vet because Sage thinks they can charge whatever they want and then treat you so rudely when you question anything on your bill, their policies or wait times. They only have one vet taking patients in most times and make you wait hours on end while your pet suffers in agony waiting to be seen. I know Omega is great in San Mateo and they occupy the old Sage building in San Mateo where Sage use to be in San Mateo. At least there they have more vets on call, are up front on costs and don't argue with you or treat you like you are in the wrong at any point from my experience. We need to ask more from our service industry and stop allowing them to walk all over us and flip the customer is right to the corporate giant is right and their staff read more

I brought my tiny 3.5‑pound dog, Kahn, to SAGE Vet Centers in Redwood City during a very frightening situation. He suddenly developed loose stool with blood and some vomiting, and I was completely distraught. From the very first phone call with Coral, I felt supported. She was calm, clear, and reassuring, which mattered so much in that moment. When we arrived, Sean handled triage with such confidence and gentleness that Kahn actually relaxed--something I didn't expect at all, especially since he's under three years old and not used to vet environments. Dr. Hansen continued that same calm, kind energy. He answered every one of my questions with patience (and I had a lot because I was so worried). He took the time to explain what was happening, what to watch for, and what the next few days would look like. Before we left, Jenna, the vet tech, went over Kahn's medications with me. She didn't rush through anything--she sat with us, listened to our concerns, and made sure we felt confident about the treatment plan. I also want to highlight something important: the cost was completely reasonable. In fact, I've paid more at our regular primary-care vet. No one tried to upsell me or make me feel scared or pressured. I felt respected as a pet parent the entire time. The beginning of this year has been rough for Peppermint, she just recently healed from UTI (bacterial, no crystals). Here we go, day 1 around 6am PST, my 8yr old snowshoe cat (Siamese+Tabby - e.g. Grumpy cat) Peppermint's back legs (mainly 1) all of a sudden was weak and wobbly (semi-paralysis) odd because she was super normal a couple hours ago. My heart broke and I was in tears. We rushed to Sage Campbell emergency but they do not have a neurologist and told us to go to Sage Redwood City. When we arrived, the Sage RW team was the awesomest. They were attentive, kind, clear instructions (what's going to happen), tolerated my emotional crying (glad my husband was there to be our rock) and thorough. The facilities were clean. Sage RW ran all tests to rule out possible heart stroke, heart failure, blood clots, etc. The vet said her vitals are all normal (caught a heart murmur) so the neurologist stepped in. Dr Rozental said he suspects possible FCE or ANNPE, and scheduled an MRI early tomorrow (thank goodness for pet insurance - highly recommend) to verify prognosis but before the MRI they wanted to check her murmur to make sure she doesn't have heart disease for anesthesia. Day 2, arrived around 7:15am. Funny story, when we dropped her off for her MRI Dr Rozental told us when he went to the patient room to check on her she freaked out and used her hind legs to jump in the recycle bin which was definitely a good sign haha. During the MRI Dr Rozental said the prognosis is Acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE), that she doesn't have to go through surgery. Looked ANNPE and its basically a small amount of jello-like material from the center of the intervertebral disk gets shot at the spinal cord at a very high velocity - the impact causes damage and often semi or paralysis on just one side. She isn't in pain so no pain meds or medication at all. The treatment is helping her rest, heal and confine her to a place (big crate) so she doesn't hurt herself. Eventually physical therapy. Great news is when we got home she was super high-per (lol) off the anesthesia for 15 hours (omg). She was trying to go everywhere, she was Pac-Man hungry so we gave her only a 1/4 of what she normally eats per instructions, helped her to the litter and she peed twice. Day 4, she took 7 steps, rested, 5 steps, rested and she was leading me to the kitchen (she is food driven). Fed her (not too much), she drank, wobbled to the litter and clumsy went to the litter box and peed. Her recovery progress is looking great! I want to give a huge shout out to Dr Rozental and all the amazing Sage Redwood City Team for helping my fur-baby. *Note if your serious about adopting a pet I highly suggest pet insurance* read more

Took my frenchie here on a ER basis, while she was in labor. Not to be too graphic but she had the limbs/hips of her baby sticking out as we drove her there. It was about a 15 minute drive. SAGE was the best, they quickly took her in, we did call on the way and informed them of the situation. They immediately took her in while my husband and myself gave information to the front desk. Unfortunately the baby did not make it, but SAGE safely removed the baby and our girl came home with us the same day. We also sat in a private room as the Vet discussed what occurred and we were able to vent. The vet was real kind and showed compassion to our situation. SAGE had actually received our call in the morning, and thought our vet would be performing the c-section. Also if you ask why we waited?! Frenchies have c-sections? Why did you let her give birth! THAT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT REVIEW ABOUT ANOTHER VET! If you must know, or want to hear my story time please continue. We had a scheduled c-section that same day. Our girl gave birth to 1 pup at 6AM, meanwhile our c-section was at 8am. We frantically called SAGE, but given that our girl was not in distress and there was no emergency and we had our scheduled c-section, we were advised to go to our apt. For the c-section with the other vet. This other vet took our girl in and did not perform the surgery - they waited it out thinking she would give birth to all pups naturally (3 pups in total) at 10am she gave birth to the 2nd pup (still birth) and they waited all day and called us at 5pm to pick out girl and take her home to labor "more comfortable" at home. The 3rd pup was the pup we went to SAGE for at almost midnight! Yes midnight! First pup 6AM, 2nd pup 10AM, 3rd pup 11-12AM ish - the other vet should have never sent us home! Too much time had passed in between the 2nd and then sending us home. Our 6AM pup made it and she's our baby, our little miracle baby that was born on our guest bed next to my husband. We have previously have used Sage emergency and dental services over the years. In December we brought in our Golden to be examined for intestinal problems. Sage scheduled ultrasounds and aspirated the liver after a blood test detected high liver enzymes which could indicate cancer. We were upsold and Sage recommended even more expensive and invasive procedures which we declined at the time. We obtained a second opinion from a separate pet hospital and we were informed that a simple extra blood test (Nu.Q) quickly detects cancer. This is a well known $200 test available since 2020. We could have avoided much extra stress and invasive tests on our dog as well as thousands in extra expense. Callous Greed! Sage is supposed to be the top facility around. Not anymore and we have heard a number of similar experiences from different cat and dog owners. read more

They clearly have competent medical staff here, but if you have a serious emergency with your pet it will cost you. The initial admission fee seems reasonable at $200 or so, but the service fees are crazy high. For example, a chest xray for our cat cost $1000 and took less than 5 minutes. read more

Thank you Dr Joo and every single Sage employee who assisted Princess with her tooth abscess surgery! This entire ordeal was traumatic, painful for my senior dog and one that I wish she never had to endure this for one second at her vulnerable age, but many dental specialists would not do any dental cleanings on my dog ever since she was 12 years old due to her heart condition. This resulted in her teeth becoming infected and covered in tartar. Princess had surgery while having 7 teeth extracted last week and she was loopy, weak and unable to eat the entire first few hours while home. I wasn't sure if she would be able to get better but I really focused on feeding her porridge, sweet potato, rebound (a supplement liquid form) via syringe every few hours to help her gain strength. After 1 full day of this, she has been eating on her own, not needing any of her pain medications at all and has bounced back! Her mouth area is twitching now but I'm hoping this goes away after a couple of weeks. Besides this, my 17 year old dog is thriving, happy and resting well. When you bring a pet into Emergency you are scared...especially if you don't have medical experience/knowledge. As a former vet tech I am somewhat more familiar but it's not that different than humans where you have to go for test after test to get a definitive diagnosis. For pets this can be extremely expensive. My dog was painfully shut down in her lower abdominal area, not eating, hunching, etc. A blood panel would be $500, an ultrasound $1000. What do you do? I opted for the lab work, let's see what it says and go from there was my thought. She did give me advice that even if ultrasound showed pancreatitis (vs muscle strain) the treatment would be the same. I was able to power through these options, but I really wish the Sage doctors gave more economic guidance. $850 later, I took my baby home. I left an email two days later about adding Carprofen....got a call back 8 days later! I think their medical is stellar, but I think they are also encouraging you to spend money to "save" your baby. I called 4 times in 2 days & each person who answered the phone gave me multiple different estimates. Your weekend staff showed no mercy or care. Told me rates were do to "Holiday Weekend". ??? But aren't you all a 24/7 ER Pet hospital, how does your rates vary. I will never, ever take any of my pets to your hospital. Instead of your staff granting my final wishes for my dog, you all had another agenda. How much money can we milk from a broken person. You come highly recommended by so many. My golden retriever (Charlie) suddenly started vomiting blood, so I brought him in around 1AM for an emergency visit. The entire team was incredible. They were calm, supportive, and took the time to walk me through every test they were planning to run. They also took a really thorough medical history and were so gentle and sweet with him throughout the whole visit. In such a scary moment, I felt genuinely cared for and reassured. This review is long overdue . We have been a patient of Dr. Roberts and Noelle for about last 4 years . Our Pooch was having some GI issues ever since we adopted him. After multiple vet visits , we decided to see Dr. Roberts at Sage . She is very thorough and methodical. She diagnosed Tanner appropriately and came up with an excellent intervention plan for him. This has helped our pup tremendously. Nurse Noelle is absolutely amazing - she is very knowledgeable , kind , responds to emails promptly and has always gone above and beyond to provide exceptional quality of care. Being a first time dog mom, my experience w an unexpectedly sick puppy was the most harrowing and devastating experience in my life. Following a route neutering in the east bay w/ another facility that I will not name at this time- admiral developed a severe infection that progressed into edema, cellulitis and skin necrosis. He almost died. After initial 48 hour treatment at Sage in SF, he was transferred to red wood city for surgical intervention. Many many hard conversations were had involving what can be done to save his life and make FULL recovery, and how much that is going to cost. Our doctors were very empathetic but direct - and never pushed us into any specific direction. They were clear on what milestones they're looking for and outlined the costs for upcoming 4 days of full time ER surgical care. At this point - having good pet insurance is GREAT. We don't have the best insurance so will look into changing it once this ordeal is done, however, if you have the resources --- the care here is TOP NOTCH. The billing team will correct any invoices that included extras that were not used, but always double check your invoice. This is world class surgical pet care, so of course it's expensive! - if you don't consider your dog or cat part of the family, then don't bring them in for surgical intervention if you don't have good pet insurance or a lot of money. (We're taking the 0.01% cases that result with a $30K bill) otherwise, I wouldn't go a anywhere else. Our pup is recovering at home now in conjunction with wound care on site. However, the initial care was great, but there was absolutely zero follow-up even with five phone calls to Sage when most the time nobody picks up or tells me they'll leave the doctor a message. I had several new questions about his medicine and dosage because the lasix was not working well after 5 days and also questions about his heart failure condition. However, the three times I left messages I still received no reply. Then I called again yesterday and they told me I had to make an appointment to ask any further questions. They don't make a veterinary practice better than Sage. My sweet cat Mishka needed surgery to remove a growth invading her liver and a practice capable of handling such delicate surgery including a likely blood transfusion. She did really well. But overnight her anemia worsened when it had been abating. Then she couldn't maintain blood pressure. More transfusions, more medications, blood plasma plus worrisome news anticipated that the mass on her liver would reveal a hyper aggressive form of cancer. She was fading before my eyes, her condition moved from "guarded" to "grave" by morning. I had to make a terrible decision to let her go. Mishka died today, 1/27/23, at 11:09am. My heart is broken. The only solace is no hospital could have done better nor given her the best chance at beating this except Sage. Thank you Dr. McCoy and all the nursing staff for your talents. My 12-year-old service dog, Natalia Marie--the animal who saw me through homelessness and addiction to help me reach where I am today--is currently suffering from a ruptured cruciate ligament. She is in "silent screaming" pain, unable to perform her life-saving PTSD alerts because she cannot physically reach me. ​Despite presenting a confirmed diagnosis and an itemized estimate from another accredited hospital, Sage Redwood City has refused to provide a "Good Faith Estimate" or a formal "approximate" estimate on their letterhead without a new, redundant $200+ consultation fee. This is not a matter of medical necessity; it is a matter of financial gatekeeping. The public must understand that almost every major national and local veterinary nonprofit requires an itemized estimate on hospital letterhead to even initiate a case. By refusing to provide this standard document, Sage is intentionally preventing me from accessing over $5,000 in verified community support. ​The following organizations--which many families in the Bay Area rely on--cannot help a pet at Sage without the very document this hospital refuses to provide: ​Waggle: Their terms explicitly state: "To be considered for a Waggle campaign, you must provide a current, itemized estimate... on the veterinary hospital's letterhead". ​The Pet Fund: Their mandatory requirements state that all applicants MUST have a written cost estimate for the needed treatment from their veterinarian before applying. ​Frankie's Friends: Their "Hope Management" grant specifically requires a copy of the itemized estimate for specialty care to even begin the review process. ​The Onyx & Breezy Foundation: This organization requires proof of financial need and a formal estimate of care before a grant can be issued. ​Perhaps most disturbing is the hypocrisy regarding Sage's own corporate social responsibility. SAGE COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS--SAGE'S OWN NONPROFIT ARM--REQUIRES A FORMAL, ITEMIZED ESTIMATE FOR SPECIALTY CARE BEFORE THEY WILL REVIEW A GRANT APPLICATION. By refusing a standard industry estimate, Sage is effectively extorting a consultation fee from a student in a medical crisis and intentionally dismantling the safety nets designed to protect the human-animal bond. If you are a member of a vulnerable population or a service animal handler, I urge you to take your business to a facility that prioritizes the health of the animal over administrative technicalities. Had good experiences with Sage in the past with urgent care issues, but yesterday I have to say I was disappointed with a particular policy around "prescription" dog food. My 12 year old morkie with digestive issues and diabetes, which was diagnosed by them two years ago and helped us get started with managing his blood sugars and diet. Shortly afterwards, we moved out of the area but come back frequently to visit family. We flew in yesterday but his prescription kibble arrived to our home just hours after our flight took off. Managing glucose levels is not always easy and maintaining a strict diet is important. Yes, we should have ordered the special food earlier, but we were caught now trying to find the food, which I knew Sage had in stock. We have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars there in the past until we moved. When I called ask if we could purchase a small bag of the food to get us through the weekend, we were told that they couldn't do it if the pet wasn't an "active patient", meaning that we'd need to bring him in, pay for a vet visit and then pay the pricey cost of the food. This prompted me to do some research on "prescription" pet foods and I came across a pretty significant class action lawsuit against the pet food manufacturers that apparently was settled. These foods do not contain any controlled substances apparently, have not purportedly been shown to be significantly different from non-prescription foods and are priced significantly higher than regular pet food. Switching any pet from their regular diet, particularly one with significant medical issues, is a delicate process. Sage could have asked for proof that he regularly gets this food from our local vet if they were worried about "dispensing" a "prescription" food to an animal that they had not done a recent exam on, but sadly, they chose profit over health. This is a company policy issue, not an individual provider problem. The ones my dog has seen in the past were professional and cost-sensitive. Very disappointed. read more

I am so pleased with the expertise of everyone I have worked with at this vet ER. When my cat got sick in 2022 the vets and techs took great care of her and helped us find a solution that led to a full recovery. She has since had several visit for upper resp infections and dental cleanings here and I never worry hen she is in their care. They are expensive and encourage treatment with a regular vet when possible but I am so grateful to have them so close by. read more
