I am incredibly grateful to have been recommended this facility. After unsuccessful vet visits elsewhere, my poor constipated cat began to take a turn for the worse. After calling around San Jose (where I live and work), no one seemed to care that my poor animal was suffering. That's when I decided to make the journey through commuter traffic to Palo Alto on recommendation from a coworker. And I must say, WOW! From the start, I felt at ease as soon as I walked in the door. The staff, through the ranks, were so attentive, I immediately felt as ease. They called/texted with updates and gave me tons of valuable information. The staff were all very informative, yet realistic about the situation. I picked up my pet later that day and thankfully, they were able to help him. It's been 3 days and my cat is now eating and playing again. The staff will also text me on occasion to follow up and make recommendations. This is a review for Dr. Chen. She and the nurse were very nice and careful with our older cat, and addressed his weight issue with kindness, and no scolding. She explained the benefits of a healthier lower weight, and also offered good alternatives to the current ineffective flea medicine I've been using. (I felt very uneasy at a previous visit to the Animal Doctors when I saw a different veterinarian. He raised alarm at my cat having lost some weight, when in fact my cat SHOULD have lost weight, being told he was obese the previous visit. He seemed to be pushing invasive treatments and made me feel guilty when I expressed doubt about having them done.) We have been patients of Animal Doctors clinic for over 2 years (ever since we moved to Bay Area). Wait time for appointments is usually long, and if your dogs is ill and needs same day treatment, they will usually refuse to accept you and send you to urgent care. But we were happy with Dr. Bogatsky and continued to be their patients. In June last year, airline I booked travel for us and our dog with asked me to make sure I have rabies certificate filled in on a CDC form. It basically looks same as regular rabies certificate we already had, but it has a CDC letterhead. I called the clinic and, at first, they kept convincing me I need a full health certificate for this travel. I said I do not need this, as my pet has EU passport, and I only need the rabies report filled in on the CDC form which I sent to them over the email and asked if they could fill it in. Long story short: they asked us to come in, they performed physical exam (which is okay) and then they charged us over $400 for filling in this form with same info that already existed in Bonnie's regular rabies certificate. On the itemized invoice it was stated that they charged us for "travel health certificate" - which we never received. After I complained about this, they said that Dr. Bogatsky decided on this cost and there is nothing they can do about it. After that, I decided to post a detailed Google review and explain the situation. Shortly after that, I received a call where they apologize and say they will refund us most of the charged amount (they still charged us for physical exam and about $40 for filling in the form - which I think is completely reasonable), and after that I believed it was fair to delete the Google review. We kept bringing Bonnie to Animal Doctors, but I noticed we are not being seen by Dr. Bogatsky anymore - which is okay, I had equal trust in other vets here as well. Today, I received notes from our last visit and I realized that notes from last June say: "Technician Notes - Per Dr. Bogatsky he will no longer see this client as per her bad Google review. She may see one of the other doctors or go somewhere else. TS (Tammy Steely)" Since it looks like veterinarian oath at this place doesn't go beyond Google reviews, we will no longer take our business to Animal Doctors Palo Alto. To Dr. Bogatsky: It's sad to see that you thought it was reasonable to charge someone over $400 for copy pasting information from one form to another, and to decide not to take this client anymore after they raised their voice about it. My sweet Indiana - 12 years old and FIV+ - stepped on something that sliced his paw deeply. I called these folks for an emergency appointment, and they couldn't be bothered. Ultimately, I took him elsewhere, but he died anyway. I don't know that he wouldn't have died even if he'd been seen right away, but for the woman who answered the phone to respond with, "Sorry - we're too busy" was inexcusable. Pretty disgusted by complete lack of response from Animal Doctors at a critical time for my cat. I've been taking my cat to the Animal Doctors for a few years, and had positive experiences with the previous vets (who have since moved on/retired). Since being taken over, things changed. Getting an appointment was difficult. Some other little things as well, but nothing concrete enough to justify a poor review here. However, when my cat needed to be seen urgently, they had no availability (no surprise), referred me to an emergency clinic (makes sense), BUT when I followed up with the Animal Doctors no fewer than five times (both by phone and email), they would not get back to me to discuss the findings and options. Again, they had referred me to the emergency vet, and other vets have always closed the loop and followed up with phone call in similar circumstances. When I was able to speak with someone at AD they said I'd have to bring my cat in if I wanted to discuss anything. I explained I didn't want to subject my sick cat to more traumatic car rides for no clear reason, and even offered to pay for an appointment in order to just have a conversation. No response. AND--my always-indoor-only cat came up positive for feline leukemia at the emergency vet (they did two tests to verify, as she had never been outside or had contact with any outside cat). Literally the ONLY place outside the house she went was to the Animal Doctors. Furthermore, she had tested negative for leukemia just a few months prior (at the Animal Doctors), and before they did three rounds of blood tests on her. VERY weird she would then come up positive for leukemia a few months later. Obviously, I can't know or prove that she was exposed at the Animal Doctors, so consider this portion of the review with a grain of salt. I don't want to think something that egregious could happen at a vet, but that's the only place outside the house she had been. read more

This is the worst vet you can ever take your beloved pet to. They are happy to take your money when your pet is healthy, but beware if you actually need your services when your pet is sick. They gave me an appointment 3 weeks out when I told them that the ER gave my cat weeks to live and recommended I get in touch with my primary vet immediately, for palliative care. I called and called and explained my situation and they had the same standard response, that they're booked 3 weeks out and they put me on the cancellation list, but never actually called back. Any clinic worth its salt is keeping slots open for emergencies, but don't expect that at The Animal Doctor. They are a soulless, money-grubbing business that only cares about their bottom line above everything else, including the life of pets. Avoid, avoid, avoid! read more

Amazing doctors and staff. Although my beloved pet and I were only there for a short time, they prioritized my dogs health and listens to any concerns I had and answered all my questions. They made sure to address any and every concern I had and truly cared for my fur baby. The staff loved her and gave her plenty of love and treats every time she visited. This is the only vet my dog has ever pulled back against me to go back inside rather than going home. Unfortunately, my dog, Tootsie, passed away almost 3 weeks ago. They cared for me and my pet during that time, helping with the cremation process and event sent me a card with all their (staff and tootsies doctor, Dr.Bogatsky) names handwritten with a small message inside. I have been to many Veterinarian clinics for the last 20 years. This Animal Doctor Clinics is the WORST on two fronts 1) Integrity and unreliable veterinary practice: Why do I need to bring Jio back for more repeat blood panels, when Dr. Bogatsky already informed me the blood diagnostic result? On Jul. 1st, my dog, Jio is well and just has a general annual checkup appointment: two types of blood works (comprehensive panel and phenobarbital monitor panel) on that day. Dr. Bogatsky examined Jio and suggested a teeth cleaning, due a fracture tooth. When we got home, an hour later, they called us for a repeat blood draw on Jio. I postponed. However, the next day, Jul 2nd, Dr. Bogatsky left a message on diagnostic blood result, and suggested an ultra-sound procedure, due to low albumin protein. I called them, and asked why. The front-desk informed me to ignore Dr. Bogatsky's message, because of invalid blood works. They repeatedly asked us to bring Jio back for blood drawing again on three different phone calls. So, we can't trust whether the blood work result is valid or Dr. Bogatsky's diagnostics accuracy. We went to a different Veterinarian for second opinion on reading the blood work results (from Dr. Bogatsky's office). There is no need for ultra-sound procedure. And Jio's teeth cleaning procedure doesn't show any fracture tooth, as Dr. Bogatsky's examination! The question now: Can we still trust the given blood work results from the Animal Doctor clinics? 2) Rip-off big time! Please don't buy any products at the Animal Doctor office. It costs twice as much compare to buying online at Chewy.com. And no return once the product leaves the office, even though, unused, and un-open boxes. Another un-pleasant surprise: 3.5% surcharge fee on Visa card. I would give zero star, if Yelp allows. read more

We had a very bad experience using this vet for a year. We decided to leave and are so happy we did. First of all, the place smells horrible. The front desk staff are not helpful. The bill is ALWAYS higher than you expect and they are rude when you try and get clarification on your bill. I've seen Dr. Armor twice now, with both appointments being extremely last minute (same day Friday appointments). I thought I just got very lucky the first round in landing a cancellation, and maybe that's the case, but I'm writing this review because today Dr. Armor played phone tag with me in the midst of back-to-back appointments until we finally connected live. She then proceeded to make time to see my dog so as not to push things out over the weekend. To me, this is above and beyond behavior that truly warrants a five star review. I want to be clear that I don't expect this level of dedication every time, but am very appreciative to have been on the receiving end of it this time around. It's these small moments that tell me whether a not a doctor cares about my pup, and encourage me to keep prioritizing Animal Doctors as my vet of choice in the future. Dr. Armor has a sensible, trustworthy "bedside manner" and has been very transparent about costs before doing any procedures or tests. I have taken both of my dogs to The Animal Doctors for 3-4 years now. I have had experience with all doctors with both of my dogs. Both of my dogs needed surgery, Dr Armor completed a major bladder surgery for my little one, and earlier this week Dr Henien completed removal of a mass on my Husky. Both procedures went perfectly. My little one recovered and is back to herself, and my Husky is on the road to a speedy recovery and acting himself (although I am trying to keep him calm lol). Both Dr Armor and Dr Henien called me to check on me and both gave me details on the results of the testing after the surgery. Instructions are always very clear. Staff and techs are friendly and efficient. I have seen Dr Bogatsky for exams and he is also very nice and my Husky was very comfortable with him. I do imagine it would be tough to get an appointment during an emergency situation (as stated in other reviews), but that is why I planned ahead and already have a backup plan in case we need an appointment if The Animal Doctors are too busy. Unfortunately a place that provides excellent care is always going to be busy, so maybe other people should also plan ahead with an alternative option before an emergency happens! Why I chose The Animal Doctors of Palo Alto: Two top reasons were (1) convenient location and (2) wonderful, glowing reviews from both Yelp and colleagues who are dog owners in the area Overall impression: Love the service we get here! Very quick, extremely friendly and kind to my curious pup, and knowledgeable. I didn't feel judged or ashamed to ask any beginning pet mom questions, and it didn't feel like they were trying to "up sell" me on any services or products. More details: I rescued Reeses from DPS Rescue in February and did a lot of research to find the right place to get vet care for him. I'm currently a medical student and I've seen firsthand just how variable the health care system can be for humans based on where they seek health care services, so I didn't wanna risk getting bad service anywhere for my new pup! The Animal Doctors of Palo Alto came highly rated not only on Yelp, but by friends in the area who have pets, and for good reason! My first visit was a bit longer, as that was the first vet visit Reeses had while in my care. He got checked out physically, tested for heart worms and parasites, prescribed flea and heart worm prevention medication, and given his first canine flu shot! This all happened within 30-40 minutes, and I felt supported and like I was an active participant in my pup's health care the entire time - can't say that about all human doctors. Dr. Lagerweff gave me useful advice on some dry skin I noticed on Reeses, as well as some joint conditions his breed are more at risk for. I felt treated with respect and kindness the entire time, and Reeses *loved* all the treats he gets when he goes to the vet. Shout-out to Mari for being a very helpful vet tech and calling so quickly with his test results after our first visit, and to Holly and the new receptionist-in-training today for making me feel at-home and making Reeses feel very loved while we were waiting for his flu booster! Pro-tip: As with human docs, showing up 10 minutes early helps with registration and getting you in the system! We have been taking our cat, Sophie, in to The Animal Doctors for just over nine years. Overall, our cat has been relatively low maintenance so we would bring her in for her routine checkups and schedule her with any doctor because they all offered such wonderful care. Recently, Sophie was losing weight and getting sick so I took her in to get checked out. It has been during this experience that I have really seen how wonderful this place is. Sophie needed surgery to remove a mass in her belly which was a scary experience for Sophie and for the humans in Sophie's world. I worked with Dr. Megan Armor and she rolled out the red carpet of service for us. She took my calls with all of my random questions and she talked me through all of our options and steps that I needed to take. She also came out to personally meet me and talk me through everything after the procedure in the parking lot (because of Covid) and she then called the following morning to see how Sophie was doing. She also provided easy to follow instructions for care after the surgery. I am so thankful that my Sophie cat got the care that she did from Dr. Armor and the staff here because without them, my kitty might not be here today. My dog started going to the Animal Doctors in December 2009 at the recommendation of a friend. I adopted my dog that month from a local shelter and brought her in the next day for a doggy checkup. She's seen the vets at The Animal Doctors since that time, but now it's time to find a new vet. Why? Because over the last few years a string of concerning incidents have taken place. Any one of these things I would overlook, but all of them put together makes me really question the quality of care my dog is receiving. At our first visit I was told my dog was spayed. To my surprise, a few months later my dog went into heat and learned that my dog was not spayed after all. At this same visit, I was told that my dog had a growth on her mammary and needed to have surgery. Of course, I agreed to the surgery, which went fine other than the fact that my dog's nipple wasn't put back into place properly and now she has one that sticks out further than the rest. (I really don't mind, as it's just cosmetic and doesn't bother her... but this is just one more thing on my list.) Then, a few years passed and a friend pointed out that my dog had a cataract. So, I took her to the vet and asked about it at her next checkup. The vet assured me that my dog had no vision problems. But the cloudiness got worse and by her next visit, my dog was completely blind in one eye. At least this time the vet said my dog did have a cataract and sent her to a specialist. The final straw happened this week when I learned that my dog had been given incorrect medicine by The Animal Doctors. My dog was due for her yearly checkup and I noticed that she was really thirsty and had a few accidents in the house (which is very unlike her). I told the vet that I thought my pup had a UTI. They did an urinalysis (which cost over $200) and gave her 10 days worth of medicines. After the 10 days were up, they told me to come in for another urinalysis. It came up negative, but just to be safe, the vet suggested another 10 days of antibiotics. Sure. So I go pick up the medicine. At home I go to give Lola the pill and notice that the new pills are different than the ones she had taken before. The new pills are smaller and brown compared to the big white pills she had received before. I called the vet to inquire about it. I was first told that it was normal to have different color and sized pills, as sometimes the vet orders the same pills from different manufacturers. Then I talked to another person at the office who assured me that the small brown pill was correct, and that the pill my dog should have been taking for the first 10 days would have also been small and brown. I happened to find a 1/4 of the first pill given to my dog. It's big and white. I took it into the vet as requested. How does the story end? Well, I got a call suggesting that I had mixed up Lola's pill with a different medication (either her own or a human's). Just to be safe, I double checked all of the medicine in our house and nothing matches the big while pill that she was given by the Animal Doctors. When I called to report this to the Animal Doctors, and to reiterate my concern and interest in finding out what my dog had taken, I was given attitude and was told "alrighty." In addition, they did not apologize for the mix up, instead saying that "it is a mystery that will never be solved." They did not offer to do blood work to make sure nothing bad happened to my dog. Instead they said, "Well, the urinalysis came back negative" so at least she doesn't have the UTI anymore. Two other bits of information that I think are important to share. First, most of the visits above were not with Dr. L (although he was involved with some of the final calls). The visits were with new and/or visiting vets. Maybe had I insisted on always seeing Dr. L, we would have a better experience. Second, this office does deserve one star for the really nice staff. read more

Do not count your cat with a vet who couldn't care less. We just moved to Bay Area and went to this clinic for our cat's annual checkup. Two weeks later, we went there for a recheck. 3 days after the recheck, my cat died of blood clots. Our emergency vet said our cat had enlarged heart and heart murmur. For two checkups, the vet didn't mention anything about our cat's heart condition, which he supposed notice and hear it during the checkups. During the visits, we mentioned our cat's changes like he doesn't like running, and his weight lost 4 pounds compared to last year's check up. The vet didn't say anything useful and couldn't care less about our cat. He also said he isn't a cat expert when I ask him about my cat's paw and fur health. He asked me to go to a pet store to ask workers there. Do not trust the fake scores. Stay away from this place. Go find a vet who is caring, professional and respect animal's life, not a vet who doesn't give a damn about your loved ones. read more

Then I got a quote to see how much it will cost to clean my dog's teeth, they quoted me $500-700!!! I only paid $400 down in San Jose with my previous vet that I dearly love!! I don't think I will bring them back here. Customer service here is great, but I still believe that it is too expensive. Dr. Lagerwerff and crew provided excellent vet care to my Rottweiler. He is not just a animal doc - he actually loves animals, and that is a key attribute for a vet. That goes for the few staff members I had the chance to meet: Danielle and Alicia - both were very professional and showed empathy when it was clear I was so upset at my loss. My dog was 9 years old, and there was little they could do to save him - but I didn't want that, I just wanted my dog to be comfortable and not suffer. They did this perfectly. I had my dog put to sleep today, it was a hard reality. I really appreciated all their help and prompt prescriptions/appointments through this last week when his health was going downhill, and I know my dog did too. Over two years later and the Animal Doctors have gotten even better with the addition of Dr Jones! Figured it was time to write an updated review. The Animal Doctors have taken care of each of our five dogs over several years, and we can't imagine going anywhere else. From new-dog checkups to end-of-life care, and every incident in between (ate a chocolate bar? foxtail in the nose? infected paw? Cushings?), these vets and their staff provide an unparalleled level of care and attention. This is a true family vet practice - the entire staff get to know and love your animals. They work so hard to squeeze you in if you have an urgent issue - you know, the kind that come up Friday afternoon just as the weekend starts looming - and they do great follow-up over the phone and and subsequent check-ups. Last year, as our beloved dog Ernie was dying, Dr Jones actually called over to the emergency vets to check on him around 2 in the morning. This year, Dr Lagerwerff worked with experts from other practices to put together a course of treatment for our foster dog, whose infection couldn't be treated the standard way because of his Cushings, all as part of a routine vet visit. Excellent care by Dr. Lagerwerff for when our regular house vet was out on a vacay. They took us in on a short notice, as if they were emergency veterinary hospital (and they are not). Not only everyone was truly understanding and gentle, and allowed me to be with our puppy throughout all visits (initial and follow ups, blood draws, etc.), but Dr. Lagerwerff listened to everything and asked all the right questions to diagnose and figure out the course of action swiftly. He reassured me that everything was going to be alright, which it eventually was, and played a role of a physiologist of sorts to us humans, in addition to being a vet. I felt very calm and most importantly, our hero of the day felt calm, too. If I'm ever in need again, I know exactly where to go. read more

After adopting my adorable kitten from the Humane Society I received a complimentary check-up with a vet of my choice. I decided on Dr. Lagerwerff after reading the positive reviews on Yelp, and am happy to report that the rumors are all true - he's wonderful! I truly appreciated the time he spent examining my little fur-baby, and the recommendations he made inregards to transitioning her into my house-hold and with my other 14 year old cat. One of the suggestions he made was a plug-in device called Feliway which I purchased for a very affordable price and began using right away. So far no cat-fights nor fur-flying so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the peace will continue! The staff are also great, and very friendly, so overall a very positive experience. read more
