We came here to visit the petting zoo which I feel is a hidden gem. It's so cheap (think it was $3 a person?) and then $1 for little tubs of food. I would def recommend grabbing a few tubs. We grabbed one per person and it was not enough . The animals are hungry and love to eat! The goats were so gentle with my three year old son. They had bunnies, a turtle, donkeys, chickens, alpaca (I think?) and goats. I may have forgotten an animal or two haha. But it was so fun. We walked around and visited the adoptable animals too. I used to volunteer here when I was younger and it changed a lot! There's a dog area, cat area and smaller critters (hamster, birds, Guinea pigs). The shelter is kept clean and the cages were so clean as well. read more

If i could give this business 0 stars i would !! i went there a couple days ago to adopt a kitten and they are all sneezing & clearly sick. staff in the cat room were very nice. all though the front desk workers had a bad attitude and i overheard them talking junk about the staff there. also during my time there i witnessed the male staff walking by dog poop and not cleaning it up and letting them sit in their own poop. i do not recommend that place. it's a disgusting environment to be in. read more

The review: I had to wait until my kitten was fully adopted to leave this review as I feared she would have been taken away from me. I will probably be put on their "do not adopt to list" for leaving this review but people deserve the truth. I fostered to adopt a kitten from here and it has been an absolute emotional rollercoaster full of threats and inconvenience. The kitten I was fostering to adopt had a near-death experience, due to being neglected by Peninsula SPCA. Luckily I was smart and got a second opinion by an outside provider which saved her life. The first day I adopted the kitten she started to have diarrhea and foamy vomiting within three hours of adoption. I immediately called Peninsula SPCA clinic only to be brushed off. Concerned I rushed her to Peninsula SPCA for care anyway. When I got there I was informed they would monitor her overnight and give me a call back the following day. They did not call me for a week. When I was able to talk with them I asked what was wrong. They stated she was fine and did not witness any diarrhea or vomiting. Upon opening the kennel at home after pick up I discovered she was fur and bone. No strength to even walk. I monitored her for a few hours and tried to get her to eat and drink something. She only wanted to lay and sleep. By morning she was seizing and completely unresponsive. I rushed her out to a pet emergency center. At the emergency center, I explained the story and my concerns. They had told me she was super malnourished and that she wasn't going to make it through the night due to back to back seizures and a glucose of 35. I was persuaded to let her fly over the rainbow, but I informed the doctor to try anyway. I prayed hard and under some miracle she made it after seven hours of intense care. She needed ongoing in- patient intensive care and I was advised to not take her back to Peninsula SPCA to get it as this isn't the first time they have seen poor quality care of animals from there. However, right after this conversation, the manger from Peninsula SPCA came and took the kitten for "care". Apparently she worked there as well. The kitten was suppose to get a week of intensive inpatient care but I received a call a few hours later that she can go home. When I received that call they were not willing to explain to me what changed. Upon pick up she remained weak. There was no communication on plan of care. Skeptical and fearing for this kittens life I took her to a vet for a second opinion. Peninsula SPCA found out and told me to bring her back. I even got a personal call from the manager threatening to take the kitten away from me because I took them for a second opinion. Upon my demanded arrival back at Peninsula SPCA, I asked for the director. I explained my story and concerns. I clarified the contract that states, " I could bring them anywhere but I would be responsible for the expenses." I was willing to pay anything to keep this kitten alive, but I felt Peninsula SPCA had something to hide and it showed. They disregarded the contract and came up with a new one just for me. I had to promise I would only go to them for care. And if I went against anything they said or could not meet to their demands they could take the kitten away from me. Every time I would drop her off and pick her up she immediately needed to use the restroom, gulp down water, and seemed sluggish. She never was her playful self coming from there. Made me wonder if they were locked in their carrier all day without a restroom or food and water. I am very suspicious of neglect here. Please be careful and proceed with caution when fostering. Any suspicion should always be documented and reported, but I am only one person and one documentation and report wasn't enough. I am just lucky my kitten was a fighter and is now adopted so I never have to deal with them again. I would never recommend this place to anyone as they should be fully investigated. read more

Have loved this place since I was a child went in with my family and the girl with braids who was on her phone at front desk was very rude seemed as if she did not want to be their walked through the kennels and they were very helpful with speaking about the animals sadly the petting zoo wasn't open the day that I went I will definitely have to come back for that! Unfortunately when I processed back to the front I went through the shop to buy things and there was a Black lady in scrubs assumes she works their since she was in the office behind the front desk yelling about how no one can do anything correctly and they need to do their fucking job and stay in their fucking place and how people are stupid when they come in to ask simple questions about bringing their personal animals in. I was going to ask about having my dogs updating done at the shelter clinic but she seems like a rude person who just doesn't care about animals well being. While staying at a pet friendly hotel a dog was left behind. The hotel and I worked together with the SPCA and things turned out much better than I could have imagined. After asking permission the team came out to my room and rescued is a very small very emaciated very neglected dog. They took her back, stabilized her, did the right thing by giving the owner a chance to try to claim her. etc. They told me if I was interested when she became available they would let me know which they did they actually did. they called me they gave progress report and they told me when she was available. They also held this dog for one day giving me the time I needed to get out of work and to get over there which it's huge. I have zero complaints. read more

As a former animal rescuer, I've spent my fair share of times on various shelters and I was extremely impressed by this one yesterday. Shelter wise- the volunteers were all very friendly and genuinely seems to care about the animal. The indoor pens as well as the pens out back were extremely clean and there was no dirty animal smell, which is often hard to avoid in shelters. We arrived at 3:30 and most of the animals had been adopted already, so of you are looking to adopt you may want to arrive closer to opening. Petting zoo wise- the petting zoo was the reason we went to the shelter. My family enjoyed petting the goats and feeding the llamas. It cost $2 each but that helps out the shelter, so it was worth it. There is an area that houses a bald eagle, panther, bobcat, and a few other animals. The cages with the bobcat and panther bothered me a bit, didn't seem like it was really the best environment for them. read more

This place is so much more than a shelter, it's also has a petting zoo!! That's right not only can you look for your future furry addition to your family but for only $2/person and another $1 for animal snacks you can walk amongst a llama, a few goats, tons of chickens, and meet some adorable alpacas and various other animals! Definitely worth checking out! So In regards to the adoptable pets: they have very spacious cages for the animals which is awesome but it's a shame that they have the cages roped off with a radius divider so you can't actually get next to the cage. Kind of weird but I'm sure they have their reasons. When I was there they had about 6 cats available (no kittens). read more

I have adopted four dogs from this facility. Unfortunately I had to make the toughest decision to return Ginger. It was very tough handling her on my own, along with my 3 others. 3 is enough. But I had no doubt she would be adopted into a loving home. We loved her, still miss her when I look at her pictures. She was lovable and such a disaster lol! She'd dig up the yard, chase squirrels on our walks. She I cried and hugged her for a bit until she got uninterested! Lol. But she was happy with the handlers as they took her in the back. I made sure to put as much info as I could about Ginger. She was updated on all her shots, healthy little girl. Well... I have my 3 babies. Milton was my first. Got him way back in 2012. Schamps in 2013. Mort in 2014. They are 3 little terrors! But wouldn't trade em for the world. Now if only oil could succeed at training them and have it be set! What a wonderful life that would be! Only thing I wish would be changed is that the SPCA would require anyone surrendering an animal to give them any possible extended history of the animal. Maybe in a little interview process. It would be nice to know more about why they were given up. Milton barked and still barks at people and is aggressive. Why?!?!?! Mort doesn't like walking thorough the floors that have tiles in the house. Schamps constantly whines. It would have been nice to know more. Okay. That's all! I drove an hour to get to here to go to the petting zoo walked in at 359 and they wouldn't sell me a ticket for the petting zoo said they said they stop selling tickets at 4 it just hit 4 while she was telling me no my daughter was so upset. It was not fair at all read more

My dog had blood work done at the Peninsula SPCA and I was told they would fax the results to my vet. I had to call multiple times and could not get through. When I finally did get through they told me the fax was down but would email me a copy. I waited and never got an email. I continually called back and could not get a person (you always have to leave a message). My dog became critically ill so I had to call again and go a round about way to get a person on the phone because it is virtually impossible to talk to a human. I had to go down myself and pick up my dogs lab work because this place is too incompetent to handle it. I spoke to a receptionist (probably a millennial) with an attitude who rather than apologize for my grief, acted like she was so inconvenienced. I will NEVER deal with them again!!! read more

I brought my kids to see the "petting zoo" I haven't been in a few years and it has changed alot. I remember more than one sad overweight leopard. Of course there were plenty of rambunctious goats and chickens roaming around. The facility was clean the staff was very friendly. I was happy to see a small handful of dogs and cats for that matter. A couple guinea pigs and gerbils caught our eyes maybe we will be back to adopt them! I probably would only come back for the adoptable animals and not the petting zoo next time. read more

I scheduled a meet and greet for my current dog to meet one we wanted to adopt and I called to let them know I was running late and they said they said the pup was already adopted, the afternoon before. To make things worst I caught one of their staff man-handling a puppy! I let the ladies at the front desk know all of them just looked at me like deer in headlights!! read more

The woman who works in the back is extremely rude. The front desk gladly let me in to look at the dogs but once I asked the woman in the back to meet with any of them she interrogated me with personal questions concerning where I live, what I do for a living, and where I would/wouldn't be able to go with any of these dogs (I have owned plenty of dogs in the past by the way as I of course stayed off the bat). She was extremely reluctant to let me meet any of the dogs and talked about me behind my back once I was finally able to be alone with a dog. I visited twice and both times I had the same uncomfortable experience and was basically run off the property by this same woman both times. read more

Once upon a time this humane society wasn't the best place for a pet to be. It was poorly kept, the cages were packed full of poop and the animals looked miserable. The petting zoo out back was in shambles and the volunteers consisted of frightening looking convicts glaring at you over stacks of donated newspaper. But NOW it is amazing. Under new management, the Peninsula SPCA Humane Society has improved with leaps and bounds. The animals for adoption are always clean and happy looking. They are taken out of their cages for frequent walks and are given lots of love from friendly, happy young volunteers who genuinely care. They take their time with the animals now. Rather than check their teeth, eyes and gums and sell them to you for 60.00 the animals at the Humane Society are given thorough vet care, quarantined to look for signs of mange, heart worms, or other pocketbook killing disease, then sold for a much bigger price tag. (A lot bigger... like 160.00.) But it is worth it. We adopted a dog there when it wasn't so great for 60.00 and he had heart worms and they didn't know it. It ended up costing us almost $1,000.00 in treatments to get him well. The SPCA has also begun doing more community outreach programs. One was the Dog Wash during the summer where you could bring your dirty pup in to get washed by volunteers for a cash donation. Looking for a pet? The shelter was very clean and the workers were very knowledgable and nice. They had a wide variety of cats. The dogs seemed to be mostly Pitt bull mixes. The cat we liked had a small sneeze so they checked her out and offered medicine if we wanted to adopt. They also took the time to teach my wife how to administer the anti-biotic that the cat would need for 7 days. Overall, it was a good experience. read more

My low rating is not for the precious babies that have been rescued and kept here but it is for the very nasty people that work/volunteer here. My husband and I have come here a lot over the years and have even rescued one of our baby girls from this facility but the past 6 months or so have been dreadful! The 'workers' act as if you are inconveniencing them when you ask to visit with a rescue or they roll their eyes at you. This last time I was standing in front of one the cages of a rescue and miss 'nasty' worker came right up, no excuse me, and opened the cage door right on top of me! I quickly moved out of the way and tried to brush it off but when miss 'nasty did it again and again and again I had had it! I will not step foot back in that place again! If you are that miserable find a different place to work /volunteer because you are causing these rescues not to have a fair chance! read more

After being approved for pets for patriots program where you pay a 10 dollar adoption fee we played with a dog for a while and filled out paperwork and went to the desk. I show my letter from the company and on their website that shows they are a participating shelter and we are to pay 10 dollar adoption fee. The entire front desk never heard of it and called someone who said they don't participate. Very confused why your listed as a partner with a program then deny to honor it when shown your listed. A very organized and orderly shelter, but I didn't like how they don't let visitors take out certain animals (specifically kittens and puppies) unless they are looking to adopt. The animals are cooped up all day, I'm sure many of them would love any opportunity to play or stretch their legs! This is the only shelter I've been to (more than 5) that has this stipulation. I am extremely pleased with this SPCA. I love going to shelters just ogle at the dogs and kitties, its horrible because I always end up shedding a tear but hey, I know this coming in. Anyway, the facility is actually pretty clean. Lots of people working here, I know a vast majority are volunteers and this makes it that much more impressive. I've been here a handful of times and this place is progressively from what I've seen getting better as far as sanitation goes. Theres an indoor doggie pin and a cat room. The bedding is kept neat and they also have a caged yard to give them outside air and bathing. There are visiting booths so you can play with the dogs as well. Donations are accepted here and there is also come merchandise for sale as soon as you enter. The staff is okay, they don't seem thrill to be working there sometimes... The plus to this SPCA in comparison to the one in Norfolk is that they have a petting zoo! Yup! Mostly farm animals. I remember there being bobcats and otters but I didn't see them last time I went. However, the goats and alpacas are adorable! They are so friendly and will bombard you if you buy some treats. There are some slotted (.50c) machines where you can buy them treats and have them eat from your hand in an open barn. There are also chickens, ducks, rabbits and a peacock from what I remember. The petting zoo however is only $2 and the man who was working there that day was a funny fellow. Overall, I would love to come back here and adopt an old dog. Theres lots of them and of course they have the cutest brindle pits. I urge people to go here and adopt before buying from "pet stores". read more

I got my cat here almost a year ago and the adoption process was easy and a bit fast. They give you coupons, cat food/treats, a first time cat parent dvd, health information, vet list, everything! This is the first time I've every adopted from an spca before and they walked me through everything and reassured me their help is there when I need it. Stopped by for the petting zoo and ended up visiting the dogs and cats and chatting with the cockatoo too. Couple dollars to get in and a buck for some food ( we bought 4) Our 3 year old LOVED feeding the goats, chickens, llamas and alpaca. She didn't want to leave. It may be small but it was just right for her. The alpaca was lazing on the ground and let her pet him and hung him. Real cute. They have a small gift shop and some really cute animal cards. These would be great just to buy to support the SPCA. I bought several to use during the year. So, grab the camera, some dollar bills and go help the animals and have some fun. By the way this is W/C friendly and anyone from 2 - 102 would enjoy it. read more
