As a former animal rescuer, I've spent my fair share of times on various shelters and I was extremely impressed by this one yesterday. Shelter wise- the volunteers were all very friendly and genuinely seems to care about the animal. The indoor pens as well as the pens out back were extremely clean and there was no dirty animal smell, which is often hard to avoid in shelters. We arrived at 3:30 and most of the animals had been adopted already, so of you are looking to adopt you may want to arrive closer to opening. Petting zoo wise- the petting zoo was the reason we went to the shelter. My family enjoyed petting the goats and feeding the llamas. It cost $2 each but that helps out the shelter, so it was worth it. There is an area that houses a bald eagle, panther, bobcat, and a few other animals. The cages with the bobcat and panther bothered me a bit, didn't seem like it was really the best environment for them.

Alpacas , very cute and friendly

This place is so much more than a shelter, it's also has a petting zoo!! That's right not only can you look for your future furry addition to your family but for only $2/person and another $1 for animal snacks you can walk amongst a llama, a few goats, tons of chickens, and meet some adorable alpacas and various other animals! Definitely worth checking out! So In regards to the adoptable pets: they have very spacious cages for the animals which is awesome but it's a shame that they have the cages roped off with a radius divider so you can't actually get next to the cage. Kind of weird but I'm sure they have their reasons. When I was there they had about 6 cats available (no kittens).

Great little place to see a few farm animals. We live in Newport so this is a great little break from the everyday grind.

Very clean and friendly animal shelter. I will always recommend this shelter to those looking to adopt a fur baby.

I got my little girl mutt from here 5 years ago. She is a sweetheart and I am grateful to the SPCA because without them, I would have her.

Stopped by for the petting zoo and ended up visiting the dogs and cats and chatting with the cockatoo too.

I stopped in primarily to view the cat room. I had heard about this store from the Virginia Cat…read moreFestival last fall, and was curious to check them out while in the area. Before entering the cat area, a friendly worker had us sign electronic waivers. There were plenty of places to sit and toys to play with the cats from Heritage. I will say it wasn't my favorite cat room, however, as it didn't feel ventilated at all and it smelled strongly. I think perhaps if they add some air flow or clean the litter boxes more often that could help. The cats themselves were cute and I was very tempted to adopt Loodles, specifically! Precious girl. Once I was finished in the cat area, I stepped back into the shop and browsed. I saw a cute treat dispenser, so I purchased that along with a catit fountain. I haven't tried the fountain yet, but I did notice that it was $8 cheaper than I paid at other retailers, so that was pretty disappointing. I'm just chalking it up to supporting a small business. Hopefully the cats like it, as they ignored the last fountain I purchased! My orange does love the treat dispenser and has largely figured it out, so that's been a success. They also had some cute toys, and I bought a little birthday cake toy that I gave to one of my cats on his birthday about a week back. He's still playing with it, so that's a good sign! Overall, I think this is a great space that could be excellent with a few tweaks. I appreciate what they do to help pets.

Be wary of one lady in there too that they hired, idk what her name is but she certainly has a discriminatory view on properly bred dogs which irritated me, basically blaming proper breeders for the issues in shelters instead of backyard breeders and ignoring the fact that pitbulls cause over 60% of fatalities every single year calling "German shepherds more dangerous than pitbulls" just because of the bite psi.. they are third on the listen karen, get it right, if ur gonna argue about something like that and be in the shelter business maybe you should properly research facts like that instead of spreading misinformation through your "agree to disagree" idiocy. It's sucks cuz I like this place to peak in like twice a year and see if they have anything new and cool for my dog to try out but instead I'm met with pitbull apologists not once but twice now. Owner needs to do a better job in who they hire. Will be buying stuff when possible online and through other small businesses now instead of this place.

They have a lot of great products from food to toys for pets. They have items for both cats and dogs. I did see an item or two for other types of pets like a rabbit. But, I was focused on the cat section. The products are nicely displayed. Very organized! The colors they chose for the store are very inviting, whites and blues with a pop of gray. The staff was so friendly. They greeted me and let me browse. I did ask if there was a dedicated section for cats and dogs. She replied for the most part cats on one side, dogs on another. I will definitely be back. I liked the collars they had for cats. Pricing is comparable to big box companies online. I plan to try out different brand of foods they offer as well.

We happened upon this pet store while out and about, thinking we might find some natural perches…read morefor our parakeets. We ended up taking home two hamsters. We received a fairly good deal on the hamsters and accessories, which we appreciated. Here's the thing though...the young employees really need to educate themselves on some of these small pets. Two hamsters shouldn't reside in the same habitat, they do not require a "friend" and are solo creatures. They don't actually "like to climb", rather when the habitat is too small, they will climb to try and escape out of frustration, as well as chew on the bars (harmful). We are housing the two hamsters in separate DIY habitats that are over 4 feet in length. Hamsters are small but require a large square-inches habitat with lots and lots of enrichment. We also discovered once home that these were not same-sex, we were told that they are females but one is definitely a boy. I pin this error on the lack of supervision of the store's hamster habitat, one side with females and the other side with males. Kids are in there handling the hamsters and may be distracted by all the cuteness and put one back on the opposite side. Having the hamsters handled frequently is probably not the worst thing, as these are sweet and friendly little hamsters and they love being handled, but definitely they need more forethought in housing them in completely separate areas so there is no mix-up and no one takes home a pregnant female (female hamsters go into heat every 4 days). This all being said....the store has a lot of small exotic pets (birds, spiders, snakes, fish), it was about as clean as I would expect it to be with two young people working there on a Saturday afternoon. Thankfully the animals we saw looked healthy.

She needed a cone for her head and we were driving down to Petco, but decided to give the small pet business a phone call to see if they had the cone and if they were open. The lady on the phone was very nice including explaining dog neck size. I have a big dog and very often don't find stuff in her size. They closed in 10 min I was 15 min away. She very nicely said that they would be there after closing so I could run in. I went in with a picture on my cell phone so I could show her what size my dog was. But she had all the sizes waiting for me at the front and I could try to see what would fit her, without having to dig around. $24 for an XL cone. Great price and very nice person. I ended up leaving my phone there because of me pulling it out to show how big my dog was. We called it and they picked up, we told them we would be there tomorrow to pick it up but was told VERY nicely that if we ran they would stay these so I could get it. THANK YOU GUYS, I needed it for work this morning. And thank you to the young lady who get stuck waiting in for me. I know you wanted to go home 20 min earlier and again THANK YOU for sticking behind so I could get it. We never liked buying from PetCo anyways. Prices were always so high and they never really have what I need. I would advise you to give whatever small business you need something from a quick call to make sure they have it on hand. So you don't get mad if you get there and they don't have whatever it is. We had been driving to Oyster Point to go to Care-alot. But now we have a new pet store. They went out of their way to be nice to a random customer and like I said it was KONG name brand and only cost me $24 Thank you guys again
