Wow! Just wow! So happy to discover a locally owned sandwich shop. The sandwich shop is quite small and it doesn't offer that much indoor seating but there are some tables to sit and eat outside. The staff was super friendly and they made their recommendations and asked me if I ever been here before. I told them it was my first time but I was set on getting a muffuletta. Boy was I glad with my choice because it was one of the best muffuletta sandwiches I've had in a while! My dad ordered a Philly Steak & Cheese and he liked his. I had a bit too, and it wasn't too bad. I think I really enjoyed my selection a lot more. Prices are fair and they aren't too busy at the time I came. I will definitely be coming back to try more of their sandwiches. read more

The day I went, they had NO BREAD???!! No bread in a sandwich shop??? I ordered a Greek salad instead, which was quite small and plain. There was supposed to be bread included with it, but I noticed she skipped it, so I had to ask for it and received a piece about 2" in size? Seriously? Greek salad should have soft pita bread served with it bare minimum. It was ok, but I certainly won't go back any time soon. read more

As a Philly native, hoagies are important to me... and Penny Hill doesn't disappoint in their cold hoagie department. Nice constructed hoagie with thin tomato slices, that's all I want and they got it! A lot of the sub shops around here are clunky and messy and nothing pisses me off more than no love or soul in a sandwich. I would eliminate every subway on this planet if I was an evil villain with a laser beam... I am glad Penny Hill doesn't piss me off. Keep up the good work! read more

Overpriced. Bad attitude. Microwaved dry philly, stale bread. Burnt cheese placed on bottom, and only a few slices of peppers and onions. Wrote the wrong sub name on the other subs, didn't say anything when we told them to have a good day. Never going back, do not recommend. Go to Jersey mikes down the road. read more

Penny Hill Subs- Vero Beach- 2 Stars Ask any local in any town in America where the best sandwich place is and they will undoubtedly direct you to a hole in the wall joint well off the beaten path. While I didn't ask anyone for the best sandwich place around, I did find a local hole in the wall sub shop while in Vero Beach. Tucked in next to a tattoo parlor in a rinky-dink strip mall off of Old Dixie Highway sits Penny Hill Subs, as they share a parking lot with said tattoo place and other businesses it was hard to determine what size lunch crowd, if any, awaited inside. This is a take-out only place with no inside seating and only two small tables outside. Upon entering my olfactory sense was at once assaulted by the smell of freshly baked bread. As everyone knows the secret to a good sub is twofold. First, you have to start with freshly baked bread, second, you have to pile it high with quality meats and fresh veggies. At least Penny Hill got the first part down. However, the second part? Not so much. I placed an order for an Egg Salad sub (asking in advance how it was seasoned) and a Monte Cristo. The Egg Salad sub came as I was told it would, with zero seasoning. That's right, nothing but eggs and mayo, at least the bread was warm and chewy. The Monte Cristo was a huge letdown. Traditionally, this is a ham or turkey and Swiss sandwich that is battered, then fried en massè, often times dusted with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup or preserves. While I did not expect this Monte Cristo Sub to be fried in any manner, I was expecting it to exhibit some resemblance to the traditional sandwich. What I got instead was a skimpy amount of processed low-grade turkey foodstuff with industrial Thousand Island Dressing on top, a bit of shredded iceberg lettuce, a few slices of tomato and a smattering of fresh from the can banana peppers. It was crap, plain and simple. I recalled that the window display announced freshly baked bread, but I didn't remember seeing the Subway or Jersey Mike's sign above the door. I looked again just to make sure. Just as I thought, the sign read Penny Hill Subs, not Subway or Jersey Mike's. As all my dedicated devotees know, I despise Subway and Jersey Mike's as both low rent places that appeal to the lowest common denominator of food and as such cut as many corners as they can beginning with processed meats. Sadly, while the bread was fresh, warm and delicious, the inside of my Penny Hill Monte Cristo was the same as those other low-end spots--severally lacking in quantity and quality. I ordered a cheesesteak and instead of cooking it, they put it in Styrofoam and nuked it. I asked for fried onions, same thing they put that in Styrofoam and nuked it, the bread was good, but the cheesesteak is the worst I ever had, and it was nuked in Styrofoam, which I believe causes cancer. Wow, a real gap from 5 stars to 1 star but we obviously had very different experiences here. Hubby and I have passed this place many times while running errands and had set it aside for a future try. Well, yesterday we tried. The real draw here for us was the sign in the window touting "we make our bread" and it was offered in wheat. On our way to the movies, we stopped in to split a sub. Did not realize that this was not a dine in place but there was a table there for people waiting so we decided to use that. Ordered an Italian sub on wheat. All of the issues with this place are so overwhelming I think it would be easier to just make a list: 1. first indication of a bad sandwich was when the employee grabbed the roll...thin, and floppy and just sad looking. 2. the employee who made our sandwich was wearing gloves as she made our sandwich...as she answered the phone while making our sandwich...as she used the cash register after making our sandwich. I think she does not understand the concept of the gloves. :( 3. the sub, once made, was really not good at all. It had boiled ham on it (yes, the cheapest stuff available) in just a layered lump and we could not even identify any of the meats that make an Italian sub an Italian sub...salami, cappicola, etc. I tasted boiled ham, little bit of lettuce, and thin, not very good bread. 4. it really boggles my mind why, this not being a dine in place, anyone would go here for a sub when for the same price you can go to Publix for a vastly superior sub?????? Yes, I said it...a grocery store sub outshines this place that is called a sub shop. Ok, granted I am from south jersey and it is very hard to find subs and hot sandwiches here that compare to up north with the delicious Philly cheese steaks etc. but this was just sad. I'm hoping that other sandwiches and hot subs are better there or maybe we just went on an off day or something else. What I fear is that maybe their customers have never had a good sub and Penny Hills has convinced them that they make a good sub. So not. It pains me to say this as I am not a fan of Subway AT ALL but...even Subway makes a better sub then Penny Hills. :( I'm all for giving a place another chance but truly, we will never go there again...still trying to get the experience out of my mind. read more

Yep I agree with Mary. The Wabasso location that took over Boppy's is just as poorly run. The Pressed Cuban is a poor (if not prime) example. The sandwich only had two slices of meat and it was barely heated through. This is the third time I have eaten from this location and I will NOT be going back to any of their locations. read more

Hmm. What can I say about Penny Hill Subs! A notch or two below Subway seems appropriate and definitely no competition for Publix subs. I've been to the Penny Hill on Miracle Mile a couple times years ago. Nothing to write home about on those occasions but it was a quick grab and I was hungry. I went to this Penny Hill on Old Dixie today and got a 1/2 turkey sub w/cheese combo. I attempted to request yellow American cheese but the attendant said she only had white American...but before she would accept the type of cheese I wanted, she demanded that I tell her if I wanted mayo and mustard. Whatever! And why did it take 3 employees to make me a sub? The chocolate chip cookies were burnt and the food cost too much. They have whole wheat but not multigrain. Skip this place and get a sub at Publix half a mile down the road. Better yet, get a salad to go at Publix. It's more healthful. read more

What can I say about this place? Fresh made bread that isn't heavy and doesn't hide the good stuff in the sub. Quick as any sub place around. Friendly, hometown service. Only drawback - tough to get in and out of during a busy weekday lunch, but that doesn't stop me. Best if you are going south on Old Dixie from 12th street because it's hard to make a left there going north. When you find a great place to eat, very little stops you from going there. We have gone several times. They have been in busy for years and still my favorite sub shop. We will definitely be back again and again! read more

My all time favorite place for subs! My favorite is the Monte Carlo. With turkey, bacon, thousand island, just like it's described. This place has been around for years, no decades, and the locals know all about it. Their homemade bread is just perfect and not too thick or doughy. read more

Went to Penny Hill Subs today 7/16/2021. Walked in just before noon, there were no customers, only me. I ordered a large hot roast beef sub from the woman with the blue hair. Meanwhile a few other customers came in and ordered after I did. I went to the cashier to pay for my sub and was waiting for my sub to be made. I noticed the two guys that came in behind me and ordered after me were paying for their subs that were already made. Then the woman with the blue hair called me and asked what do I want again on my sub, this is the second time she asked me. This is because she made the two other guys sub before mine and forgot what I wanted on mine. I guess its not first come first serve. This is my first time going to Penny Hill Subs I did not get a good first impression. Then after receiving my sub it was not even hot like I ordered. I wont be going back anytime soon, thanks blue haired woman. read more

GREAT subs! Had the Muffaletta and it was the bomb. Best sub I've had since moving to FL 3 yrs ago. Nice fresh ingredients, lots of meat (Not like what Mary from Jersey says-who prefers a Publix grocery store sub?) and the bread was tasty. When I get a sub I don't want a thick sub roll anyhow. My girlfriend had the Italian and it was also great! Going back for the sausage and peppers, saw one ordered with just the garlic butter, and it looked good as the guy who ordered it said it tasted.
