Very nice store. First off would like to thank the employees. They were wonderful helping scouts out with their coin collecting merit badges. The kindness of the staff, is greatly appreciated as want our young folks to learn a lifelong hobby. Hop on in here, as the folks are welcoming to new collectors all the way to experts. There's no frigidity, only warmth and acceptance. Each time I learn something new too. As for their collection, it is very impressive. Think of any coin or paper currency, and more often than not, they will have it. Some of their coins cost in the stratosphere, but they have ones for us regular folks too. Much to their credit they are competitively priced, despite this ideal location in old town. Cool shop in Fairfax, VA who's prices from what I could tell are about right for retail coin shop. I wanted to sell some coins, and they looked at them pretty quickly and offered to "Guarantee Consign" them which meant they would consign them and give me a guaranteed price. Seems fair. The price he offered was about 25% of the online bullion dealer's retail price of the coins I wanted to sell. Not a deal I wanted to make, but they were pleasant and the store is a cool spot with ancient, and modern coins of many sorts. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting this establishment today. My uncle has been in a hospital and rehab facility for the past 3 months. Because of that he had fallen behind on many bills, he has not had any income other than Social Security. I took some of his silver items to raise some income. I really like this vintage store! While driving around old town Fairfax, my daughter and I decided to get out and walk around and check out the local stores. This store caught my eye with a $5 jewelry sign, so I had to go in! Upon walking in I was greeted by one of the employees, and she was very friendly throughout our store visit. She told us if we had any questions or wanted to see anything, just to let her know! Which we did--there were so many cool coins and old vintage currency behind their counters. The employee had no problem telling us the history of certain bills or letting us take a look at them. If you are a coin or money collector you can find coins that range from .25 cents and up and from different countries! They also have used neat vintage jewelry from old estates for sale. This is my favorite coin dealer in the area. The service is incredible. Has a huge variety of coins and reasonable prices.

Shopping there is a nice experience. The owner is like an encyclopedia as he should be. If it is slow he will take time to teach you some basics. If it is slow he has nothing else to do. Still some store owners will ignore you if you are not buying. However, I suppose his rent is high in Fairfax because his prices are really high. There are stores around the Fairfax/Vienna area that are fair priced which means a lot cheaper. Like some of his rare numismatic stuff and I use rare loosely 2 or 3 times more than other local stores have their rare numismatic coins. I have learned enough from him to think of it as paying him for a crash course in coins. Now I will do my homework and go elsewhere first. He has great selection of new coins. They do cost more than other places, but these he does stock and if you want just 1 it is cheaper than online with shipping. So I give him 5 stars on store and how he treated me, but honestly I have to knock off 4 stars for his price gouging. So 1 star overall I have never sold anything to that store. read more

I love this store. The owner and his staff go out of their way to be helpful, friendly and courteous. The variety of merchandise, the range of prices, the assortment of options and the quality of products rivals and, in most cases, exceeds all the other coin stores I have shopped. I prefer shopping here to on-line purchasing. The prices are comparable, there is no shipping charge and you do not have to wait to get your merchandise. It is also a comfortable environment... not overdone, pretentious or so sterile you are afraid to touch anything. It's fun to spend time going through buckets of coins, boxes of 2x2's, stacks of bonds and other paper as well as currency. The owner is very knowledgeable and will take the time to explain what you are looking at, give a backstory or point out interesting facts. This is a fantastic coin shop with a great layout and a good selection of coins for sale. They have all the graded and slabbed coins in the display cases but also have value coins, not graded, maybe a little more circulated than others, but a great cheap way to fill in a collection. They also have large bins of silver coins to make deals on, and boxes of fairly priced coins that have helped fill in Whitman folders. The employees are very helpful and have a good idea of what's in stock so be sure to ask if you don't see something right away. Selling to the store is easy too, store credit gets you a little extra wiggle room for making deals. Overall, its five stars, I've been there a few times and can spend a lot of time searching through everything they have. read more

The staff are extremely knowledgeable about coins, paper money, and world history as it pertains to these collectibles. Bright display cases allow for easy viewing. The store also has boxes of international coins (alphabetically ordered by country) and older American coins (e.g., buffalo nickels, silver dimes), all clearly labeled and priced. Additionally, the store sells coin holders and other supplies at reasonable prices. Finally, Penny Pincher has a nice selection of new and estate jewelry, about which the staff also is quite knowledgeable. The staff patiently answered my 9-year-old son's questions and even showed him how to use a loupe to view coin details. My son was thrilled with the proof Eisenhower dime and 1859 Indian head penny we bought and is looking forward to returning and building his collection. I am very displeased with this coin shop. My sister and I just went to sell a good bit of the old coins we found. The first thing that was said to us was "What are you looking at getting for all of this?" We didn't go to a pawn shop seeing as that's what they say. The young guy that was there didn't look at any of the coins! They were labeled and placed in envelopes but he didn't take the time at all to even look at them and stated "I don't need to because I can see what the envelopes say." How do you even know what's there if you don't even look at them, and also something valuable could have been placed in there without us knowing. We did have a lot of pennies and he proceeded to show us this huge bucket of pennies he had and said it would take a lot of time and effort to go through them and sell them. He could have just said what he wasn't interested in instead of acting like he had to take everything we had. He told us if we wanted to we could look through everything we had because he may have missed something of value and my sister told him she didn't even know what to look for to know if it was valuable or not. He didn't want to help teach us what we should even look for. He definitely offered us less than face value for everything we brought in and it feel like he was trying to take advantage of us because we weren't to sure what could be valuable. We did end up taking our coins elsewhere and got offered way more and the coin shop cameo was very honest on what was just spending money (which the guy here offered less than face value)and took the time to look through EVERYTHING. We came out on top there and left with a decent amount of spending money unlike we would have if we would have sold the coins here. We will NOT be doing any business here again unless it's to buy the $5 vintage jewelry they have. read more

I went into this shop the other day looking to sell a collection of coins. The shop itself is clean and appeared fairly well organized and I was impressed by the $5 vintage jewelry sale that they were having. I was greeted pleasantly enough when I walked through the door, the gentleman behind the counter was helping another customer and said he would be with me momentarily. All fine and good. When he began to look at the items I brought in to sell, he seemed disinterested. While I admit I know nothing about coins and did not expect him to be enthusiastic about my collection, I did expect him to actually look at it. He hardly looked at what I had brought in before giving me an incredibly insulting offer. His justification was that it would take him so long to go through everything it just wasn't worth it. For one, I did not expect him to want everything I had brought in, but I did expect him to actually look at it and possibly give me some idea of what I had. He said that I was welcome to take the items back home and come back if I found something of value in the collection, when I asked him what exactly he never gave me a direct answer. I left with my whole collection and went to Cameo Coins in Vienna where they actually looked at everything I had brought in, made me a reasonable offer on the pieces that interested them and informed me that the rest was just spending money. I was not pleased with how I was blown off at Penny Pincher. The gentleman started off with a basic pawn shop tactic asking me what I wanted for my collection, just to blow me off when I told him I didn't know what I had. At Cameo they actually looked at everything and briefly explained what each of the pieces were worth and made me a fair offer, twice the amount that I was offered at Penny Pincher. read more

I really enjoy shopping at this coin store. They have a great supply of the U.S. coins that I have purchased for for my collection, as well as, "junk silver" for investment purposes.
