Most of your activities if you come to the show National Forest are on the west side. Many things I wish we could still check out where the Little Grand Canyon that were on my bucket list but unfortunately we couldn't make it. Due to time restraints. The east side of the Shawnee National Forest is basically home to the very popular Garden of the Gods and I recommend the Rimrock Trail as well. I have yet to visit the central part of the Shawnee national forest as well as a few other parts. This place was beautiful to check out it says I felt like I was not even in Illinois, it felt like I was back parts of the Smoky Mountains. I do recommend if you come out to bring plenty of bug and Sun spray because these bugs do bite out here and you should be prepared especially in the summer

The town of Marion was lovely, and we camped at Cave in Rock on the Ohio River. I also visited Scratch Brewing in Ava, IL. There's so much to do on all sides of the Shawnee, I'd love to return to do more hiking!

First major sign that we were making a mistake was, they require payment in cash, We should have known better. As soon as we pulled into our spot, other campers started coming over telling us how horrible it was there. We had no power and we had only a trickle of water that wasn't even enough to fill up a jug much less a tank. We went immediately to find the owner to tell them that we had to find someplace else to camp because we had no power and virtually no water at our site. We weren't there but maybe five or 10 minutes. As soon as my husband started telling the owner about the problems, he started saying no refunds no refunds no refunds, the sign says no refunds! We were in shock. They knew full well that there was major problems but went ahead and took our money. They should be shut down. They took our money and we got nothing in return. We did find a great campground (Diamond) less than a mile away, cheaper and a lot more amenities.

I went in with mid level expectations, but left feeling like I could come here every Thanksgiving. It was such a peaceful and restful place to spend the holiday weekend. We rented a large cabin overlooking the lake. The views out of the back windows were beautiful and serene. It simply took the edge off of life for a bit. Anytime we needed anything, such as towels, the employees were super responsive and helpful. Additionally, since we work in public schools, the state rate for the cabins was reasonable. The Thanksgiving meal was excellent. The fried chicken stole the show, as did the sides. The spread was truly impressive. And, again, the employees were great. I would definitely come back for Thanksgiving dinner again. After that huge meal, we all needed to spend the next couple days hiking it off. The trail around the lake is really scenic and tranquil, even in the late fall. Another beautiful spectacle is the night sky. The eternal creator puts on an amazing presentation of stars on a clear night. It was super cold once the sun went down, but worth the cold to see all of the glory. It is truly difficult to wrap your mind around it all. I love our state parks. People may complain that they are dated. Whatever. I think they are great places to get away from it all. Pennyrile was never on my list, however. It definitely is now.

We first came across Pennyrile because a friend recommended it for camping. When we saw they had a lodge we felt it was like the best of both worlds to have a nature getaway without having to camp. Check in was smooth and we were given the local dinning options, which isn't much if don't want to but dinner from the kitchen. There is a Casey's about 15-20 minutes away but it's about half an hour to get to a Pizza Hut or Walmart. Breakfast buffet is included with the room and it has a normal continental. The lack of eating choices brings me to one of the dislikes about the room. There is no mini fridge or microwave in the room. So even if you brought food to cook on one of the grills they have around, there is no where to store your food or reheat it. We brought a cooler because we weren't sure if there was going to be a fridge and just utilized the ice machine a lot. While there they offer daily activities to campers and lodge guests. While we were there they were building sandcastles on the beach as well as some other activities for the kids. They also had glow mini golf in the early evening (for a fee). Now apart from the room amenities the other gripe I had was the pool. There were leaves and bugs and it didn't look like it had been cleaned for a few days. Now our visit was in mid August so there was no heavy leaf fall yet. All in all our visit was great and we do plan to return next summer.

We pulled our boat and…read morewanted to be somewhere on the water with an easily accessible marina so we could travel by water. Prizer Point fit the bill. There's so many facets to this place, so I'll break my review up for each: I'm gonna start the review with the one big downside - we ventured out to the bison prairie on our last day and weren't going to make it back in time to check out. We called and were told we couldn't check out late. We were checking out on a Sunday and the place was DEAD all weekend. No way that many people were coming in. Anyway, it was a physical impossibility for us to get back in time. So they informed is it'd be $25/hr for each hour we were late. Mind you it was $100/night for the cabin we stayed in. Gheez. That alone cost them 2 stars. We felt like they were really sticking it to us. The unfortunate part is this stands out in our memory above the otherwise mostly positive experience. Marina - we rented a covered slip to keep our boat in at night so we didn't have to hassle with pulling it out. The slip was clean, new-ish and very well maintained. We stopped at other marinas around the lake and none were as nice as Prizer Point. The restaurant - we ate there twice. Once for dinner, once for breakfast. The food was just okay. The service was horrendous. There were only a handful of other tables each time, but if you needed something you had to go find someone to get it for you. One time I had to go to the marina counter to get a to go box. No server to be found. The cabin - we stayed in a "suite", which is pretty much like a tiny house. The beds were surprisingly comfortable and the space met our needs. It was actually quite cozy. It wasn't super clean (dusty window sills, mildewed shower curtain), but...It's a campground. It wasn't gross, but it wasn't a Marriott. I'd say it fit with my expectation, maybe even exceeded it. The property - there was so much to do, we didn't have time to do it over a 3 day weekend, but we boated during the day. It seemed clean, well maintained and everyone (others staying) were so nice. Everyone waved, said hello, etc. There are some beautiful lake views all around the property. I only wish we had more time to explore a little more. All in all, I'd say it met our expectations for a campground. We'll likely return at some point in the future, but will be sure to check out on time.

The marina is excellently maintained. Everyone around is so friendly. We just had a few hiccups. We booked our reservation the same day around noon so totally understand that it's last minute but we also didn't check in until around 7pm giving them more than enough time to ensure a clean cabin. However they didn't have our reserved cabin cleaned and the one next to it was "clean and ready" but upon getting inside we found tons of dead bugs and mold! Not just in the bathroom but also on the walls at a height where a kiddo or toddler could touch it or be exposed. To me this is unacceptable and a health hazard. We totally understand these are cabins in the woods but there were several empty units amongst us that were unoccupied and I can only hope they aren't dealing with the same level of mold. The only other thing we experienced that was negative was we rented a golf cart for $50 a day for one day but it kept dying even when the battery gauge read as fully operable. We broke down on day one and broke down again on our checkout day and had to leave the cart at another site. I'm hoping Prizer will be accommodating and comp us a future use of one day for the cart issues as I didn't request a refund but also didn't have time to resolve before checkout. The housekeeping manager and all the staff were apologetic and extremely professional which is why we will definitely still give Prizer a chance in the future. So all in all I would be wary of the cabins but everything else seemed well. Next visit we will be booking a bungalow on the water or bring an RV.

My family and I are here almost everyday. I think this park is one of the best things in Owensboro.
