Dead in less than one year. My vet 's diagnosis was polycystic kidney disease (PKD). This is a genetic flaw transmitted from one or both of Nibby's parents. A $30 genetic test from UC Davis on the parents would have identified them as carrying the genetic defect. It is a dominant gene, so statistically 50% of the litter would have fatally flawed if even one parent carried the gene. We visited them before we took Nibby home. They seemed like very nice people. However, my experience is that they are breeding cats with this fatal flaw. We loved Nibby so much and are heartbroken. read more

She is a horrible backyard breeder who sold me a sick kitten with conjunctivitis. My kitten was not socialized and was underweight. She sells the kittens for money and not for the love of the breed. The cats/kitten live in deplorable conditions, a house that smells of urine. She also sold me the sickest kitten that I assume no one wanted. When I reached to her she pretended to be shocked about the conjunctivitis, she did offer a full refund upon return of the kitten. How could I send a malnourished kitten to that woman and her house? I would recommend her at all, she is not a reputable breeder. read more

BUYER BEWARE! My husband and I purchased two kittens from Penny's Persians (breeders: Thomas Gay and Penny Shaffer) in May 2016. Firstly, after putting two $400 deposits down on two specific kittens, Tom and Penny tried reselling one of the two kittens we put a deposit on. They tried giving us a kitten we did not choose. They claimed that it is very difficult telling them apart in person versus pictures. My husband and I took a special trip from PA to NC to see for ourselves as well as to spend some time with our kittens. Upon arrival, we immediately recognized the two kittens we chose. Every kitten had distinct markings which differentiated them from one another. There was no mistaking them. Also, the smell of ammonia from cat urine was putrid. If we would have known this before making the deposits, we would not have. The burn of onions in the eyes and nose are a cake walk compared to the smell of the breeders' residence. The floors were very sticky (partly due to cat urine), and there was some cat/kitten fecal matter on the floor. As we were departing from this first visit, Tom took a feral cat inside their home. My husband and I both witnessed this. This is a cause for concern as feral cats are at a much higher risk of carrying disease, fleas, ticks, etc. After four more weeks, we drove back down from PA to NC to retrieve our kittens. Tom was not present, but Penny was. Our contract was broken immediately by the breeders. The contract states that a Feline Leukemia vaccine would be administered to both kittens while in the breeders' care, but they were never given. Our vet would not administer the vaccines until they were tested for Feline Leukemia. After three tests each, they received their Feline Leukemia vaccines. We had to pay for the tests and vaccine administrations which were supposed to be administered prior to picking up our kittens as stated in their contracts. These breeders cannot uphold to the contracts they, themselves, created. Our kittens also came with a bonus...FLEAS. They were infested with them. The fleas were observable when the kittens' fur was parted to see down to their skin. The fleas were noticed as we were driving away, but we knew we were not going to get our money back so we headed home. Once home, we bathed and treated all of our pets and fumigated our house. As we were leaving the breeders' residence, Penny told us, "Tom is always enticing them to get them to fight with each other." We did not think much of it at first because kittens are playful. However, upon returning home, the kittens we purchased from Penny's Persians really fought with our other cats. They demonstrated aggressive behavior to the point where our other cats did not and still do not want any interaction with them. We have been trying to resolve this problem since we have them but have yet to break this vicious cycle. The stress they put on our other cats is unfair and unnecessary. After spending $2,200 on two kittens, this is also unfair to my husband and myself as owners. And, Penny's Persians breeders are unwilling to take ownership for their behaviors. read more

I am posting this complaint to caution anyone who is considering buying a kitten from Penny's Persians (http://www.pennyspersians.com) of Atkinson, North Carolina, owned and operated by Thomas Gay and Penny Shaffer (the breeders). In April 2013, I successfully sued Mr. Gay and Ms. Shaffer in North Carolina Small Claims Court for breach of contract. In October 2012, I purchased a Persian kitten from these breeders. They advertised and sold the kitten to me with the knowledge that it had an active case of ringworm. After bringing the kitten back to my home in Baltimore, I caught ringworm, as did my dog. As a result, I spent several thousand dollars over the next five months trying to eradicate the fungus from myself, my animals, and my home. In November 2012, as I struggled with the ringworm outbreak in my home, I discovered that a North Carolina vet used by the breeders had diagnosed my kitten with ringworm more than two weeks before I contacted the breeders about buying a kitten. The breeders were fully aware of the diagnosis, yet they did not share it with me when I contacted them. The breeders made an appointment with their vet five days before I took delivery of the kitten to get the health certificate required to sell the kitten. Their vet declined to issue the certificate without clearing the kitten of ringworm. Three days later, they obtained a health certificate from a different vet, who noted on the certificate that the kitten had ringworm. None of this information was shared with me prior to my placing a $400 deposit and driving from Baltimore to North Carolina to take delivery of the kitten. One week after I took delivery of my kitten, my brother placed a $300 deposit to reserve another kitten from the same litter. Prior to taking delivery in November, he learned (at the same time that I did), that his reserved kitten had also been diagnosed with ringworm at the same time and by the same vet as my kitten. Upon learning this, he canceled his order for the kitten and requested that his deposit be returned. The breeders refused to return his deposit, noting that their website states that all deposits are non-refundable. In April 2013, my brother and I sued the breeders, Thomas Gay and Penny Shaffer, in North Carolina Small Claims Court for breach of contract. By not disclosing the fact that the kittens had ringworm in a timely or truthful manner, they failed to honor the terms of the sales contract that both parties had signed. The court ruled in our favor on April 10, 2013, awarding damages of $4,205. The breeders had 10 days to appeal or pay the judgment. As of this posting on May 3, 2013, they have done neither. Needless to say, my experience with these breeders has been terrible. They did not deal honestly with me or my brother. They have refused to accept any responsibility for their actions, and they have thus far ignored the court's ruling against them. If you are considering one of their kittens, I would urge you to proceed with extreme caution. UPDATE 10/28/13 It has been a little over 1 year since I purchased my cat from Penny's Persians, and 7 months since the court judgment was issued. To date, the breeders have paid $200 toward the more than $4,466 that they owe ($100 paid in July, $100 paid in August). My attempts to collect the balance through the legal system have been unsuccessful. In September, an officer from the Pender County Sheriff's Department visited the breeder's home twice in an attempt to collect the judgment. On both occasions, the breeders refused to pay. If I can prevent one person from having to go through what I did, it will be worth it. Again, I urge anyone reading this to be extremely wary of buying a kitten from Penny's Persians. I was contacted by another client of theirs who purchased a kitten in March 2013 and suffered a ringworm outbreak in their home similar to the one I experienced. You don't want it to happen to you. Look for another kitten. Note: At the time of my transaction with these breeders, they operated under the name KokaKola Persian Kittens. Penny's Persians have dozens of kittens residing in RI, Manhattan, Pa, Chicago, Tenn, KY, NC & SC, Atlanta, DC and Va, Fla, etc and not had any problems save for the ONE complainant who posted and had his brother also post on Yelp...buyer testimonials can be seen on the website www.pennyspersians.com. This is an explanation given to me by the owners: One litter in which several kittens had picked up ringworm when 6 weeks of age were treated and cleared of it and no one else had any problems. This individual came to visit family and wanted just to see his kitten (the agreement was they would return for it two weeks later) but on the way out of the area said "my wife can't leave without taking him with us". We explained to them one of the other in the litter had a spot of ringworm on its' tummy for which it was being treated and his kitten had an inactive spot on the very tip of its' ear where the hair was missing. They insisted on taking it with them and were advised on continuing treatment with some anti-fungal creme and spray. Subsequent emails from Jason were very positive and and at week's end the kitten was taken with them and the family dog to a vacation rental house on a lake for a week. Some time after returning from their vacation the vet discovered ringworm on the dog and the cat and the owners blame everything on the kitten. At first the emails from him were "It's only a nuisance, really...etc." but they eventually went into a full Hazmat tirade. The rental house was lakeside, carpeted throughout, constantly damp from proximity to the water and "pet friendly" so every 7 days there were new renters, many bringing the family dog to splash in the lake and return to the house...a "perfect storm" for mold and fungal spores. Our feeling was the wet dog picked up the fungus and exacerbated the situation, bringing it into the home. First off, a very small kitten (like a baby) should never have been exposed at that age to a strange environment and we strongly doubt it could have caused all the trouble. If it was left with us or a family member while the owners went on vacation most likely all this would have been avoided. Our big problem was that our vet's assistant filled out the Health Certificate while I was standing in the office and mistakenly copied word-for-word the description of the other kitten's spots on his tummy. I did not check the paperwork as everything was rushed that morning to accommodate Jason (my mistake) and it gave him ammunition when the complaint ended up in court. Our testimony to the magistrate ended up with the judge saying "Medical professionals don't make mistakes."..... Long story short, the kitten that actually DID have a spot of fungus was cleared of it by the meds we administered and went to his new family 5 days later, getting a clean bill of health from its' new vet and the comment "This kitten is gorgeous, the breeders must take excellent care of their animals." So...every document gets double & triple checked, no kitten is allowed to leave our home unless it's perfectly clear and in our sales agreement we require it be examined by the new vet within 7days of receipt. After deciding not to pursue any appeal of the verdict, we began making payments with the stipulation the negative comments be removed from the Internet. Jason has flat-out refused to do so and until he changes his mind.... In addition, the second negative comment is from Jason's brother Zack who had contracted to purchase a kitten and at 10pm the night before we were to drive 5 hours to deliver it to him at no extra charge, emailed that he'd changed his mind and demanded his $300 deposit be refunded. This kitten had a CLEAN exam and veterinary Certificate of Health (for which we paid) and absolutely no issues (our contract states deposits are non-refundable). Zack was party to the lawsuit. That's the full story as it was relayed by the Owner's. They have been nothing but kind, informative and courteous. I would recommend Penny's Persians to anyone seek a beautiful, loving, pre-spoiled ball of fluff LOL! read more

I purchased 2 Persians from Penny's Persians who are now 3 years old. My girls are so beautiful and members of the family. I am so delighted with my girls and even though I considered it a luxury purchase for me it was worth every penny. They are healthy and beautiful as well as very friendly and social to children. Unlike the negative reviewer here.... Jason who has did not take the breeders advice I regularly called Penny and Tom for professional advice and no matter how busy they always made time for me. I cannot say enough to good things about this establishment...I visited 2 times before buying and I saw these kitties raised with alot of affection and attention and thier home is cageless. If you're looking for a beautiful Persian I cannot recommend them enough. I also have family members thay have also purchased kitties here. I am glad to provide recommendations and insight. My husband and I were wanting to purchase a kitten. We decided to take my sister's advice and purchase our kitten from Penny's Persians. My sister purchased a black persian five years ago from them. Now we own a chinchilla persian and he is so beautiful and by far the friendliest cat I have ever owned. Penny and Tom were very kind in answering all my questions and sending me pictures of Neko anytime I asked. I still message them with questions and they always help. I picked up my boy Remi on May 20, 2018. He is an absolute delight. He is so sociable and sweet. My employees beg me to bring him to work. When I do they scoop him up and he loves the attention. He does not know a stranger and is so content. I had emailed/text with Tom and Penny several times prior to picking him up. Anytime I ask for pictures, I would be text them. Any questions I had were answered quickly. When I went to pick him up, she let me spend time with her newest Himi babies and they were not the least bit skittish about letting me pick them up or play with them. The day after I picked him up Penny emailed me to check on him which I thought was awesome. I send her updates about him and she really seems to appreciate it. Even though I only spent an hour or so with Penny and Tom, it was obvious to me that they love and cherish their kitties. They are well worth the cost because of the quality of kitty you'll be getting. read more

We have received two beautiful cats from Penny's Persians and they are the best - both the cats and the breeders. Penny and Tom care for their cats in a way that goes far beyond what I would believe the usual breeders would exhibit. Kittens are never confined in cages, except in a car carrier to go to the vet. They run and play with the other kittens and are very socialized to both other cats and people. I would say our kittens came pre-spoiled! Both had no problem adapting to our home. They are healthy, come with detailed medical records and Tom makes it VERY plain he is available to call if there is any problem or question. We went back to Penny's Persians for a second kitten after such a wonderful experience with the First. They don't allow their cats to go out for breeding by not giving the registration paperwork until you show proof of spay or neutering. Tallulah Belle and Harry Winston are treasured members of our family. The biggest problem we have is trying to not get a third kitten! read more

I just picked up a himalayan boy named dylan and I'm overwhelmed by how incredible this cat is. Besides being the handsomest cat EVER he has obviously had a huge amount of attention and been handled since birth. Thomas (aka penny's husband) drove two hours to meet me, I paid 1000 and I would pay it again tomorrow. I'm not sure I've met any person who breeds animals who has shown this much dedication and concern for their animals and I live on a huge farm and am from NYC. I was ORDERED to call ANY TIME DAY OR NIGHT if the car gets ill and he means it! I was given explicit instruction, I was given impeccable records. I will never let anyone I know get a cat from anyone else. This is the way it should be, a breeder breeding incredible animals, yes that costs slightly more for the quality of their care. Thomas said the momma will give birth on his bed, and that is exactly how this kitten seems, as if it was raised in a bed with people who loved him. If you have an animal 15-20 years it is well worth the cost to get the best there is. These people KNOW THIER CATS! No cats come with a guarantee on their health for life, but I believe Thomas would get up in the middle of the night and help me in any way they could if the kitten ever did have an issue. I would recommend this breeder to anyone. I have no idea about the negative review on yelp but I am writing this so there is a more accurate reflection what these people are really like. These cats are obviously the center of their lives. With all the bad breeders it is a shame to see people try to bad mouth, I am writing this so people can know the truth and I'm happy to speak with anyone who is curious or debating buying a kitten from them, there was absolutely nothing negative to report.
