Unprofessional and rude agents. One of their real estate agents, Linda Gomez made a posting and stated that an apartment was available for rent at $2,000 a month. After I placed an offer that met the asking price, she came back and said, actually, no it's $2200 (+broker's fee, plus utilities). I then asked if utilities might then be included. Then she continued to rudely communicate via email basically saying I don't know what I'm talking about. Beware if you're using Penrose Realty as your broker to list apartments. They'll treat prospective tenants like trash and you'll lose prospective renters. And buyers/renters, work with someone else; these people are only after their broker's fee and don't deserve your business. read more

Chris and team are great! We originally used a different Boston realty company (who shall not be named, but doesn't have favorable reviews) through Craigslist and Chris was extremely patient with us. Our agent SUCKED but we were at the mercy of the Boston rental market needing a 2 bed, dog friendly, near Fenway, and move in on Christmas kind of availability...yeah go find that in Boston! Penrose made the lease signing process super easy and dealt with the other realtor for us. My only regret was not knowing about Penrose prior to searching Craigslist! This company is a bait and switch at its core, plain and simple. Nothing they promise you ever materializes. Any initial courtesy devolves into angry shouting and childish antics from their agents. This is not a professsional company. Eventually they always show their true colors and a exhibit incredibly rude behavior. Their real estate agents should see a social and behavioral therapist because this kind of behavior is just so egregious I can't stand it. Once you get to the point of making/taking an offer and into the nitty gritty of the deal that's when they will get you. We had some difficulties throughout our remodel. We eventually moved in the home while they were still working. The work took a little under 6 months. Although deadlines and other promises fell short, the team overall did a pretty good job. For example, I had to hire a plumber and electrician a few times to repair issues after their work. Otherwise their carpentry and remodeling work is highly recommended. In the end, I'm pleased with their work and their prices. I would actually recommend this team. Just make sure to communicate with the guys thru the whole process. read more

Anyone that doesn't think Penrose is great is wrong. These guys are so dedicated to their job, they are literally always working. I moved into my apt in July and absolutely love my apt. While Penrose was really only responsible for me moving in, a few months later I encountered a really stressful situation where my roommate suddenly moved out. I contacted Chris to see if he had any ideas and all he said was "don't worry I'll take care of it." Within a week I had a brand new roommate. Chris just didn't stick me with anyone, he qualified the person and cared about the fit. All going above and beyond his original commitment. Bottom line is this, moving in Boston sucks, finding roommates sucks, these guys know Boston inside and out and if you work with them and give them your trust they will not disappoint. read more

Extremely unprofessional people. Penrose manages our apartment building and maintenance issues. When we had a concern they were defensive and combative on the phone. It took one week to receive a response to our sink leaking. They eventually refused to come help. At this point we have no faith in their help and dread having to submit a maintenance request. I reached out to Penrose and asked about 5 different apartment units that all seemed like great fits and were listed as available or being available on a certain move-in date. One of the agents told me that none of those apartments were actually available and started pitching me on other, less attractive units instead. "Strong ethical business practices"? Tony was by far the easiest-to-work-with rental realtor we've ever worked with; he was very easy to get in touch with and his communication was always clear and respectful, qualities that are surprisingly hard to find in this field. Moreover it was clear he was interested in understanding what we wanted in an apartment rather than just showing us whatever places happened to pop up, and he quickly picked up on the qualities of the apartment we ultimately wanted to find. Definitely would not recommend these guys, they failed to respond when I reported water damage in my apartment. They are incredibly greedy and self-serving, they will put their interests ahead of yours. My entire basement was flooded but they refused to send someone right away and insisted that they look at it themselves. Maybe things wouldn't have went south if they had been prompt, professional, or had any kind of property management expertise. Instead they said they would come right away, but actually showed up two days later. When they realized how bad it was they sent for help, but the professionals also took another four days. By then everything was lost and the damages were huge. The worst part is that they tried to argue that they were right and hadn't made any mistakes. The least you can do is admit your were wrong. read more

Excellent experience. I worked with Tony Garza, and I think he has really set the bar for everything that I think a real estate agent should be: friendly, professional, and diligent. When I started to plan my move from Brooklyn to Boston back in May, I sent out inquiries to several real estate companies in Boston, and Tony was the first and only to get back to me right away, even though I wouldn't be looking for another month and a half. Even though there was still a lot of time, I had a very good feeling about him and decided I wanted to work with him exclusively if possible. Throughout the week leading up to when my boyfriend and I could visit Boston, he kept us updated about our options (all in line with the specifics and requirements we gave him) and what was available on the market. The end of June for August 1st move in is apparently a very busy time, and we were a little overwhelmed by how scarce places seemed to be, but Tony was calm, cool, and professional with us. Coming to a new city, it was so refreshing to work with someone who seemed to have a genuine interested in helping us find a place! The are an experienced realty group not a bunch of students showing apartments on their summer break. They understood what I wanted and only suggested listings that fit my criteria. I found a beautiful apartment and owe a lot to their efficient, professional approach. They always met me at times and locations that were convenient for me. I own one bedroom condo in South End that I used to rent out by myself... Craigslist postings and re-postings, taking photos, scheduling showings, price negotiations, background and credit checks, forms, apartment cleaning, small repairs... Painful and the worst of all, time consuming... I was introduced to Chris by my friend few years ago and I have been very pleased. He now has the duplicate keys of the condo and he can schedule (hassle free for me) condo showings to potential tenants. All it takes is a quick sync-up phone call with me and we're all set. All those things that I have been doing on my own Chris and his team are now doing (for free). Highly recommended to all landlords. read more

I felt like he was working for me rather than a landlord which was refreshing for me. I am rather picky and I must admit it did take awhile to find an apartment but he was very patient through out the whole process. This company is unresponsive. I tried calling and e-mailing these people for weeks about a property they had listed on their website. Once I finally got through, the person on the phone said he would e-mail me more details about the property as well as some additional properties. I never heard back. This incident happened several weeks ago. I also left the owner a voice mail to which he responded 2 weeks later. I returned his call an hour later and haven't heard from him since. If you are looking for a responsive agent, don't look here. Furthermore, their website is terrible. Half the listings are rented or require you to call for availability, which given the problems stated above is going to leave one wondering about availability. read more

My roommate and I had the worst experience with Penrose Realty. We are two women in our early twenties who not only felt bullied by Eric and Chris but were also treated horribly. They repetitively assured us our application would be accepted by the owner of an apartment, advising us to put in a lower bid. It is not surprising we did not receive the apartment, after seeing Chris interact with the owner, rushing her out the door, not letting her ask any questions, and basically saying "There girls will be your new tenants." Understandably, they felt bad an assured us they would find something better. The next day they offered us something $700 over our max price point. We told them we would not be able to afford this and told them we were willing to alter our expectations to see if they could find us something else. This was not acceptable to them. They pressured us into seeing the apartment, telling us this was the ONLY decent apartment available. They would not entertain the idea of looking at other options. They clearly did not want to take the time to find us something in our price range, they wanted to close the deal, make their commission and get us off their case. In addition to being out of our price range, this apartment was on the ground level, with an entrance on the street. Being two young girls we did not feel comfortable with this set up. We were concerned for our safety. Chris scoffed at our concern saying we were "crazy" and our concerns were "outrageous". He told us "This is the best street in the city." We felt bullied and pressured to take this apartment. In attempt to convince us they did offer about $300 less in broker fee in order to help better afford it. We expressed to them we were still uncomfortable paying over our budget and our safety was the main concern. We also expressed we would look at different streets, at which point Chris told us "You don't want to live there. There are a lot of rapes" It is clearly defined by law and their license to not make these kind of statements. Finally, we told them we would think about it in order to feel less pressured. Upon telling Chris we would not take the apartment he wished us luck and told us he would not be able to help us any further. We even tried to contact him later asking him what else was available and asking about apartments on their website. He responded to us with two word texts "too small." after we asked "do you have anything else available", which he responded "No. Good Luck." I am outraged that Eric and Chris (mainly Chris) treated us this way. They clearly felt that they "owed" us for losing the first apartment. Instead of spending the time (it was March we didn't need to move in until September) they rushed and found us what was acceptable to "their" standards. There are so many respectable agencies in Boston, I would not waste my time with this agency. We ended up finding an apartment a few weeks later, exactly what we were looking for in our price range. So clearly what we wanted did exist. read more

They were condescending and unhelpful during my search last year, despite my showing up at several "open houses" (of multiple couples waiting around in the cold for these oafs to show up in their Land Rover). I don't even want to imagine what they're like as landlords. I specifically sought their help because my husband and I have a dog. No joke-- Here's Eric's response: "Uggh, pet friendly places are hard to come by." That's it. Really?!
