Food was well executed, although a bit light on some key ingredients (e.g. beet salad with very scant beets, roasted veg risotto with scant veg). A nice surprise was farro available for the risotto. We were lucky enough to spend 5 nights at the Pentagoet Inn. The inn is cozy and charming with comfortable rooms. Besides that, there is an ambiance of stylish ease magically combined with history. The ample breakfast is different each day. Every item is carefully prepared along with old standards difficult to find when traveling - the freshest of fruit and the best yogurt. Dinners are perfect, with a nice variety of starters to go along with whatever tempts you from the bar, as well as a full complement of lobster dishes (we had them all!) and delicious house made desserts. We regret we missed the Monday Oyster Roast and hope to attend when we return to Castine. Very grateful to Matt and George for such a positive experience. read more

After an ambitious, long weekend of exploring the Maine coastline, what a treat it was to land in the gorgeous village of Castine in perhaps one of the most charming inn's I've ever stayed in. The owners, Matt & George, could not have been more welcoming from the moment we walked in the front door. The property itself is oozing with rich history and the interiors have been brilliantly restored (well done, George!), making this stay feel like both a step into the past and luxury pampering. Matt is quite the chef, and the inn's evening menu sings with local comfort foods, each item delicious and unique (we tried most of the menu). Downeast Maine may have stolen my heart on this trip, but it's the Pentagoet that has been top of mind since we left. I can't wait to return! read more

Staying at the Pentagoet was a true delight that I would recommend to anyone! Castine itself is such a quaint town with many wonderful local businesses and so much history. Being there makes you feel so far away in the best way possible. But the shining star of the town has to be the Pentagoet run by the most wonderful innkeepers, Matt & George, and a truly lovely staff! Everyone we encountered on their team was kind, friendly and offered excellent service. It's easy to just park your car on main street or on the side of the inn and then from the minute you walk into the space, you are blown away at all of the decor and details that make it feel comfortable, classy and modern and at the same time so true to the inn's Victorian history. You can tell each corner of the inn has been decorated intentionally and with much care. Our room (#3) was comfortable, clean and had so many fantastic details like a signature smell, complimentary bath/shower items, and of course - the signature balcony (AMAZING!). The communal spaces are fantastic as well. The patio is gorgeous, the porch is so peaceful, and the pub is incredibly cozy and chic. Breakfast was delicious and they also offer coffee service upstairs outside of the rooms, which is such a great touch. The food and drinks at the pub are also outstanding!! For good reason, the restaurant books up fast so definitely always make a reservation whether you are staying or only coming for dinner but you certainly won't regret experiencing the cocktails (love the blueberry one..so Maine!) and the food. The menu is seasonal I believe but everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The ode to lobster on the menu was also quintessential Maine and so good.. my husband had lobster linguini. I had short rib sliders that were also amazing. If you get the chance to try the blueberry cobbler or chocolate tres leches, do it!! Those are two desserts my husband and I will never forget. Actually.. the whole place and experience is something we will never forget. It was a highlight of our Maine vacation and we will forever be grateful to Matt and George for the space they have created and remarkable levels of hospitality that feel truly special! We came for a wedding, very happy they had a dog friendly building. The room was comfortable although a shelf or something to put our toiletries on would have been great. I emailed to Inn about vegan options and received a reply saying a salad and a hummus plate was all they could offer, fair enough. When we went to dine however they had some barbecue night, they informed me that neither salad nor hummus plate was available, I went without that evening. The breakfast buffet was ok, coffee was super ( cups in the keurig room are way to small BTW) but I would have liked some bread ( seems like there is an awesome sourdough bakery around) and perhaps something like peanut butter offered. So vegans beware, the rest of you should be very happy all around. read more

I cannot say enough about our recent stay at the Pentagoet Inn. My husband and I had the pleasure of staying two nights in a very charming and spotless room. The bed was super comfortable, and the bedding, high quality. I'm not sure how it's possible to have an establishment with so many professional and caring people on staff but everyone we ran into was super helpful and accommodating. The food was absolutely superb. Everything we tasted was a cut above the norm and we were definitely well fed from the delicious dinners to the hardy breakfasts. I cannot emphasize enough the care that Matt, George, and team showed to us during our stay. Here is an honest evaluation of Pentagoet. It is an older converted Victorian with nice memorabilia from the area. The three staff members I met were very nice. One was Katie, who checked us in, and the other two were ladies who served the breakfast, as well as performed housekeeping tasks. It is not handicapped accessible, and all rooms are on the second and third floors. Our room, #12, was on the third floor. It was a small room with a very small bathroom. The shower and sink were tiny to the point of being uncomfortable. However, there was plenty of hot water, and good water pressure. There was no air conditioning, but there was a room fan that was inadequate during the day as the room remained uncomfortably hot; but sleeping was comfortable if you kept it on low during the cooler night. In terms of modern amenities there was no TV in the room (a plus for us), and there were no USB connections in the outlets. I would recommend they purchase a multiple outlet connection with USB connections, and plug it into a wall outlet. It would be a simple, inexpensive solution. There was no coffee maker in the room. I would also recommend someone perform a walkthrough in each room and make minor fixes. We had a painting fall off the wall and the locks were loose, and could be easily tightened. In addition, the pocket door would get stuck either in the wall when opened, or when the door was closed. I mentioned these issues to the lady that checked us out. The breakfast was nothing special. There were two warming trays. One contained overcooked sausages and lukewarm scrambled eggs. The other had some type of blueberry pastry and home fries. See pictures below. There were also some store bought muffins, as well as small fruit bowls, yogurt and granola. The second morning there was one warming tray with potatoes and the same blueberry pastry. I recommend that they purchase toasters and offer toast and english muffins with different types of jams, as they offered no toasted items at all. This would make a big difference. The coffee was pretty good, and it was offered at the breakfast buffet, as well as being placed outside the rooms at 7:30 AM. I thought the room was overpriced for what was offered, and note that they require a two night minimum stay. Nice people, but we won't be returning. read more

Perfection! Pentagoet Inn Have you ever wished you could go back in time? It was our privilege to spend several days at this unique and beautiful Inn. The antique furnishings and wall hangings brought history to life making us wonder in which room, perhaps, some of those famous Americans (Adams, Madison, Hamilton) rested their heads. We slept really well. Our hosts, Matthew, George and their team not to be forgotten, were warm and gracious and treated everyone like family. My friend and I stayed at the Pentagoet Inn for two nights during a recent long weekend girls' trip to Maine. We had high expectations going in from the reviews and Instagram. Even with those high expectations, we were not disappointed! In contrast, this charming b&b and it's delightful owners exceeded our hopes. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Matt and given a tour and history of the Inn. We stayed in Perkins House (we originally selected the Pentagoet because it was one of the few b&bs we found offering a room with 2 beds) and the restored 1800's inn was everything we wanted - cozy, well-decorated, and equipped with modern amenities like a 24-hour coffee bar, incredible freshly brewed coffee in the morning, breakfast buffet, etc. We visited the bar on Friday night and had dinner on the porch on Saturday - both 10/10 experiences and we feel so lucky to have been able to chat with both Matt and George during our dinner. We've already recommended the Pentagoet Inn to friends, I want to return with my husband, and I'm positive it will be one of our most special girls' trip memories for years to come. he Pentagoet Inn was absolutely my home away from home the week I stayed there in June. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, the food was excellent, and the location was perfect. Honestly, EVERYTHING was perfect! I felt like I was in a dream and I can't wait to come back! The rooms are beautifully decorated, they have thought of everything, and you can easily request more bottled water, extra towels, all complimentary! The menu is just next level! Especially with lobster - I had both the Lobster Linguini and the Lobster Pot Pie and can't decide which is better! The drinks were incredible as well. My favorite was the Ambassador - fabulous! If I could give it six stars, I would. Delightful inn within a charming and beautiful small town. The new owners, Matt and George, were incredibly welcoming from arrival to departure. We stayed in Room 4 which was very large and quiet. The bed and linens were comfortable so I slept great. While the town is small, the locals were friendly and we enjoyed our stay there. Be sure to go out to the Dyce lighthouse for perfect sunset views. The inn is also about an hour from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor as well as 20-30 minutes from several small other towns we enjoyed during our stay. My husband and I just stayed here (August 2024) at this oh so fabulous Bed and Breakfast in serene and sociable Castine. We love architecture and have a passion for respectful restoration of historic properties so this was a heavenly experience. In two too short days we felt like family thanks to the welcoming and generous spirit of Matt, George and their team of dedicated helpers. This inn, pub and restaurant rebirth has been a labor of love and you feel it in every thoughtful touch, delightful meal and kind interaction. We absolutely loved Castine which is rich in history and civic pride. In talking to locals, we learned that the lovingly revitalized Pentagoet Inn has become the beating heart of the community for gathering, good food, music and laughter during the season. I found this town and this Inn on the internet and as is often the case, simply hoped for the best.....well, the best was found, expectations were exceeded and we enjoyed a respite to remember. We would highly recommend staying at the Historic Pentagoet Inn in Castine Maine. Not only was this Inn beautiful inside and out but the hosts were exceptional with their kindness, enthusiasm and spending time giving us a tour and history of the Inn. Matt told us about the events taking place around town and we were glad to have that information and enjoy the festivities. The breakfast was wonderful we enjoyed it at our table on the porch which had a view of Penobscot Bay. The extras always make someplace more special, we received one of Maine's Gourmet Whoopie Pies on our pillows, bags of granola were offered at breakfast and complimentary postcards of the historic property were ours for the taking. Musicians were playing in the music room and there was a special BBQ feast that was taking place during our stay which added to the enjoyment. A visit in their bar will make you want to stay there just to sit in that room. Being in the travel industry for over 17 years I would vote the Pentagoet Inn as one of my favorite places to stay. read more

I had dinner here last week. It was a soft open for the inn so the menu was limited but the food was wonderful. I had the warm spinach salad and my friend had that as well as the cucumber soup which she raved about. The atmosphere was lovely, with live piano music, and lovely surroundings but the best part was the new owners. This couple are made to be restaurateurs! My family has holidayed along the north, central, and south coasts of Maine since my grandparents' generation, and my mom took a particularly memorable one to Castine with my father and her parents. My husband, Jeff, and I have never been to Castine, and when we saw the same inn my parents and grandparents stayed in on their trip, the Pentagoet, was still operating and well reviewed, we didn't hesitate to book it. We could not be happier we did. My mom stayed in the Main Inn, and we stayed in Perkins House so we could bring our dog, Mocha. Our rooms were BEAUTIFUL, the photos do not do the rooms or the inn justice. It could not be more perfectly located on Main Street, an easy walk to the beach or to the shops. In our rooms was an incredibly thorough, excellent list of recommendations for restaurants, shops and activities. The Pentagoet is recently under new ownership, and the new stewards, Matt & George, could not have been more lovely, warm or helpful. Whenever we were pottering around Castine and we mentioned we were staying at the Pentagoet, residents and shop keepers would always mention how much they love Matt & George, and how lucky they feel to have them in Castine. In addition to being a lovely inn, the Pentagoet is the best restaurant and bar in town. We tried their signature cocktail of the week which had beet and carrot juice in it, and I won't lie it sounded...healthy...but it was delightful (honestly, I ordered it 2 nights in a row)! Their bartender/cocktail connoisseur Justin is incredible. The white bean hummus is delicious, the fall mixed greens are fantastic (a must order), the carrot soup is wonderful (tons of flavor and more substantial than it sounds), the crab cakes were the best I had in Maine, the lamb lollipops are sensational, and the short rib sliders are perfect. Baron's Pub is the coziest and most charming bar in town, and we were happy to spend all of our evenings in Castine here (as were the inn guests and many, many locals!). Kate, Joyce, Sandra, Patricia and the rest of the staff could not have been more kind or helpful. Anything we needed was immediately attended to. This inn is run by a tight team, and many have been with the inn for decades. Their love of the inn is apparent in the quality of their service. The Maine hospitality industry has unfortunately been suffering staff shortages across the state, but the Pentagoet is fully staffed. It says everything about the former owner and the new owners as inns and restaurants across the state are struggling with staffing that employees remain at the Pentagoet. This is a gem of an inn, which is the heartbeat of the town, run by incredibly special people. I could not recommend staying at the Pentagoet more, we hope to make this an annual family tradition. read more

The room is appropriately sized considering when the inn was built (1894). We had room 3 which was special as it is the second floor room just beneath the Inn's name on the exterior. It has a spacious bathroom with a ball in claw tub and quite charming floral patterned surround curtain. Pedestal sink with medicine cabinet & geometric green & grey tiles in addition to a small wooden table to hold your incidentals along with soap & very appealing fragranced shampoo & conditioner. The room is decorated & designed with the period in mind. Tasteful & quite comfortable with the thoughtful inclusion of TWO luggage folding luggage stands instead of the conventional one. The room also features a very small deck attached to the bathroom that has two cushioned rayan chairs & a small table. We enjoyed a bottle of wine while reading outside here. The sounds of jazz drifted up to us from the sitting room in the early evening which was quite pleasant. One MAJOR flaw was the lack of air conditioning. There is a ceiling fan & an additional box fan in the room, but it was still quite warm during the night. I awoke a couple times to shed sheets ultimately eschewing them altogether. Breakfasts here are buffet with some excellent hot, fresh made offerings as well. We enjoyed the extraordinarily light, eggy French toast with a blueberry compote served (unnecessarily in my opinion) with warm maple syrup. My wife enjoyed a bowl of hot oatmeal with sautéed peaches & cinnamon. Quite satisfying & enjoyable. The server was pleasant & efficient. The coffee was quite good too. We were lucky enough to be invited to a group dinner this past Friday. We started on the porch with cheese and drinks. Our server for the evening was Jasper I believe. He was stupendous. He anticipated our needs, moved around talking people effortlessly, and really took care of all of our needs the entire evening. Such a professional! We moved into a private room where we were each given a menu with 2 choices for the evening. Both main courses were delicious! The salad was made of fresh, locally grown mixed lettuce with a homemade dressing that I could drink by the gallon. The new owners came and introduced themselves and then came back later and entertained us by playing the piano. Desserts were yummy, I highly recommend the blueberry crisp! All in all a fabulous evening and it bodes well for the new owners' success. read more

Disappointing. We made reservations for Jazz on the Deck a month in advance, but when we got there they said there was no available tables on the deck and they seated us in the pub. The service was horrible and the food was just OK. Way over priced. read more

After hiking Katahdin, we decided to treat ourselves to a by-the-sea B&B to relax. Pentagoet Inn was the perfect place. The view of the stores along the street heading to the ocean was as soothing as the hosts demeaner; accommodating and considerate of guests needs. It is hard to believe that Matt & George are only a few months into ownership of the inn. One would swear they were veteran hosts. Staff was friendly and efficient. The inn is lovely with accommodations you would expect of a Queen Anne Victorian built in the late 1800's. A bonus for history buffs - a museum and historical society nearby. The meals were incredible, almost as good as the hosts' cocktails. The one thing I didn't like was that we could not stay longer! Thank you to the hosts & staff for helping us to succeed our goal of relaxing. We will be back. read more

My girlfriend and I have eaten and stayed all over quaint New England towns. We have had some amazing meals and stayed at some of the most beautiful inns and hotels. We have also experienced the polar opposite. Pentagoet Inn offers a top notch staff, some of the best views in New England, and wonderful amenities. Without a shadow of a doubt the best part of our stay was the food. I can honestly say I cannot remember having a better meal in the last 5 years. The grilled oysters were an absolute revelation, topped with crispy bacon and fresh as can be. The short rib was cooked to perfection, you didn't even need a knife as the most tender meat feel apart. Paired with roasted carrots and mashed potatoes the dish was spectacular. These dishes were not only expertly crafted and prepared but the dinning experience didn't make you feel intimidated or up tight. The atmosphere here was cozy and comfortable with world class food and service. I would make the 4 hour drive from Boston again just for the food in a heart beat! read more
