The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the small bathroom en suite. At only about 5 feet square, the shower cubicle is about the size of a phone booth. There are plenty of fluffy towels and hot water to compensate. Super fast wifi was a surprising bonus! Delicious home cooked breakfast included.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this was one of the most disappointing stays I've ever had…read more The only positive thing I can say is that the view from the back of the room was beautiful. Unfortunately, everything else was a major disappointment. First, this is not a cabin that it's simply a motel-style room that only looks like a cabin from the outside. There isn't even a TV in the room. We also had no hot water for an entire day, which is completely unacceptable. The mattress was so lumpy and uncomfortable that I barely slept during our stay. Honestly, based on the condition of the room and everything we experienced, I believe we deserve a refund. The room was poorly maintained. The bathroom sink clogged almost immediately every time the water was running, making it frustrating to use. The shower was unbelievably small. If you're taller than about 5'5", you're going to have a difficult time fitting comfortably. There was barely enough room to move. The electrical outlets were so loose that my phone charger wouldn't stay plugged in overnight, leaving me with a dead phone the next morning. Even the entry door was badly scratched and looked like it had been damaged by a dog. The price is outrageous for what you actually receive. Be sure to read the fine print before booking. You're given the choice of either allowing a $500 hold on your credit card or paying an additional nonrefundable $35 per night. For that extra charge, all you get is Walmart Great Value coffee. For the amount this property charges, I expected a much higher standard of accommodations and service. If you're planning to visit Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park, be aware that this property is about an hour away, which is much farther than many people might assume when booking. Overall, aside from the beautiful view, this stay was absolutely not worth the money. Between the lack of hot water, uncomfortable mattress, clogged sink, tiny shower, maintenance issues, loose electrical outlets, unexpected extra fees, and distance from the main attractions, I would not stay here again or recommend it to others. This was one of the worst lodging experiences I've had, and I genuinely believe we should receive a refund because the accommodations were nowhere near worth what we paid.

A B&B that is timeless!…read more My husband and I were cruising the coast of Maine and were lucky enough to get the last available room at the Oceanside Meadows Inn. We heard about the Schoodic Peninsula on Chronicle and had to see it for ourselves. We didn't book anything before we left home because we decided to throw caution to the wind and let the knowledge of the Yelp community and the availability of Hotels Tonight be our guide. It worked well! First, the Oceanside Meadows Inn is an Old Sea Captain's house. It's not a "renovated" Sea Captain's house (which, I believe, would ruin the charm) so don't expect fancy schmancy designer curtains and hot tubs. It is exactly the way it should be. There is mismatched furniture and trinkets and a telescope and a piano and board games and lots of floral bedding and chopped wood and, and, and...I could go on. Second, if you're an old soul at heart, you will come to understand the Peninsula and know that Oceanside Meadows is a perfect representation of what the area is all about. It's raw and charming and historic and no, please don't ever replace those old creaky windows and that beautiful glass. The beds are comfortable and we could hear the lapping of the ocean outside our window (I slept through the night which is something I never do) and although others have mentioned small bathrooms, our bathroom had a shower and although it wasn't a huge bathroom, it was fine. We actually did not have time to go over to the beach area across the street (the weather wasn't great either) but the view is stunning and you will most likely have the beach to yourselves when you stay there. I'll be honest about breakfast. I didn't really eat much of it. I can't eat chilled fruit soup in the morning (my husband liked it) and they incorporate nature into the menu (think edible flowers) so it's interesting but I'm kind of immature when it comes to eating stuff like that so I can't really write a review about it. I still loved having tea from the vintage teacup and I did eat a whole grain waffle, which was good. I'm not one to "request" something else (breakfast isn't a biggy for me anyway) but they were very accommodating so I'm sure I could have asked for something else. We were in kind of a hurry so when Ben told the guests to meet him in the cottage to discuss things to do in the area we were going to try and sneak out beforehand but I'm so glad we got caught because it was the BEST. The history and knowledge he has of the area is unbeatable. We had the best lobster roll for lunch because of him and we saw some beautiful areas because of his suggestions that we otherwise would have never seen. Oceanside was really a perfect spot to stop and absorb the Peninsula and appreciate its history. One more thing. The owners left a book on the bed for us when we arrived. It was called The Peninsula (by Louise Dickinson Rich) and it's all about...wait for it...the Schoodic Peninsula. It's an oldie but my husband found it in a used bookstore a few days later and I am now the proud owner of it. If you love the area, I highly recommend that you read it. It's the little things in life that make all the difference.

Maybe you're not a B&B person (I wasn't); you'll still enjoy the breakfast. Like the previous reviewer said, the entire peninsula is a quiet, early-to-bed sort of place without much in the way of dining or nightlife. However, you are a five minute drive from your own secret national park - Acadia National Park's Schoodic Peninsula. Without the hype and crowds of the bigger park an hour car (or ferry) ride away, but with just as many rocky shorelines, and a few rooty trails, this little park is a hidden gem. The people staying at the B&B seemed to be more the hiking, biking, canoeing type than city slickers looking for a cute town to shop in (see: Bar Harbor instead). The sleepy town aside, the grounds of the B&B are beautiful, 2 or 3 big houses with some old shuttered cottages, a greenhouse and foresty trails in back, a private strip of beach across a tiny street. I didn't find the decor all that odd - I expected a B&B to look like a crazy grandmother's house with floral wall paper and quilts and doilies - and that's what you get. Multiple common living rooms, a kitchen for cooking (since there are no vegan-friendly restaurants within an hour radius), all in the same building as our room. You have to be a little comfortable dealing with other guests, and I imagine you could have a bad night if they were a little rowdy since none of the rooms are sound-proof at all. Our room had a nice and comfy king bed, private bath/shower, no A/C but the temperature was perfect in the night in August with the windows open. I can't comment on how it would feel in other seasons, but they did have heaters lining the walls for cooler months. No TV, wifi seemed to work for us but was a little slow. Cell phone reception was spotty for the entire peninsula. The best part of the stay - the three course breakfast every morning. I believe it's always vegetarian, and can be made vegan (the chef is very accomodating), in our two days we had various fruit soups, french toast, bundt cakes, and an egg (substitute) florentine, along with fruit drinks and coffee/tea. I really enjoyed the creativity of presentation, the edible flowers, and it was so good that you have to eat it all and then go outside and expend enough energy in the great outdoors to work it off. Even though I'm fairly certain I'm not a B&B person (not the biggest fan of chatting with strangers) I definitely would recommend it if you happen to be in the area or want to escape the crowds of Bar Harbor.

A dog-friendly, free shuttle will pick you up at the doorstep and take you around Schoodic Point (the prettiest part of Acadia National Park) and drop you back at the Inn after a hike. The backyard is fenced and has several outdoor seating areas where you can play fetch with Fido, sit by the fire, read a book in the hammock, or have a cookout (grill, wood, utensils, etc. provided) in a beautifully candle-lit setting. We also enjoyed playing board games with our 11 year old (they have hundreds!) one rainy night, how wonderful that our dogs could hang out in the room with us--Leisure Lee, especially, appreciated the dog bed provided. There's on site pet-sitting offered for an extra fee. But not with just anyone! Pam and Arnold are pet experts, breeders (pugs), groomers--they know animals inside/out and really spend time with them (long walks on the beach, playtime, feedings, etc.--they treat pets like people). We asked them to sit with our two puppies (bloodhound and boxer-mix--leather- chewing piranhas, really) from 6 am to 9 pm while we went into Bar Harbor for the day and when we returned Azy was in Pam's lap, and Leisure Lee was asleep, listening to music, by the fire--I don't know of any conventional hotel that offers pet-owners such peace of mind via this service. The breakfast--wow! Fresh fruit, yogurt, granola bars, organic oatmeal, bagels, cream cheese, wheat germ--you can eat healthy if you wish, but they also have pop tarts, kid-cereals, chocolate muffins, fancy creamers for coffee, all sorts of juices, unlimited pet treats and bottled waters. A family on a budget, we loved that we were able to place our own groceries, too, on the fridge shelf provided. That said, Three Sisters Café, down the road a ways, offered great deals on good food when we ate out, and the food stand in front of The Fisherman's Inn had inexpensive lobster rolls to die for. While there, we met an Italian couple, a family from Maine, and a retired librarian--all quiet, conscientious, interesting folks we loved meeting. But Pam and Arnold are the warm, whip-smart people (add to their pet-knowledge incomparable knowledge of fun things to do in the area) that really make the place into a one-of-a-kind, exceptional home away from home--they go way out of their way to make sure their guests are cared for, comfortable, and happy. We loved our trip here, and plan to go back, often.

When we asked for soap and shampoo, we were told that they were not included. We also were told that there would be no breakfast or even coffee. We were there offseason, so nothing else was open, so we just stayed in that terrible, claustrophobic, freezing cold room with no water. It's also wonderful to see that they're serving it with some fresh-cut fries as there's such an overwhelming improvement in both taste and texture that you get with fresh (never frozen) fries. The fries are also perfectly cooked with a good crisp on the outside, but still fluffy potato in the middle. They then went the extra step and have house-made tartar sauce and slaw to go with it. It's a simple dish in concept, but this place goes the extra mile to make you something that's both delicious and worth coming back for. The dining room is on the smaller side, so if you have a large party it would be a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation to be sure there's a place for your entire group when you get there. I came a little later in the evening (maybe around 7pm) and found it to be pleasantly quiet, though not empty. I was greeted quickly by the owner and seated quickly. I also found the staff to be pleasant and fun to chat with while I waited for my food (I sat at the bar). Housekeeping....doesn't happen until AFTER you check out! Guests are told to leave trash, towels and linen outside their doors for housekeeping to pick up.
