Look up what REALLY happened with this company and you'll see a compassionate CEO who took a hard situation and turned it into something positive. Ignore these reviews, they were not left in good faith. This place is very unique! We got a gift box of spices from my in laws and I always wanted to come see what else they had. We moved further north and now it's less than a half hour away. They have most of your typical spices but they have some very interesting mixes that could spice up your kitchen and give you inspiration. I had not been to Penzeys in several years and was looking forward to seeing what new spice adventures I would find. The education about the spices and spice blends was the reason I would go there when I lived in Wisconsin. It's unfortunate that now, their education on spice jars and in spice boxes, includes their stand on the political divide in our country. As with individuals, I respect this businesses decision to express their own ideology. As for me however, when I go to a store whose product I enjoy using ; I go for the product not to learn about their ideology. Thank you for all the previous years of spice and spice blend education. First time shopping at Penzey's Spices. Easily located across from Woodman's, near the Starbucks and near I94. The entry is very welcoming and staff provided good details about their products, including empty jar offering that includes stickers to label the jars. What a great place to find all the spices you'll need for cooking or baking. They have common spices, and even hard to find spices in various size containers. If they don't have it, nobody does. Penzeys offers a variety of spices of high quality, and I've been a customer for years. I usually order to ship, but when I drive through Kenosha, I order ahead online and pick up at the store. It's a seamless process, and the store clerks are so helpful. Yesterday I placed an online order, and this morning they called to say their thyme was on sale, and they offered to re-run my order with the lower price. Interesting little spot. Three stars because it is quite pricey but their claim is quality so how do you put a price on that? I don't exactly know. No need to get salty (I can't resist). Also remember that I am Indian and we don't have spice racks, we have spice cabinets or closets...I keep mine in large pickle jars and large peanut butter jars.....we eat them, rub them on our bodies, reek of them, add them to absolutely everything.....just to give you an idea--I'm not new to spices. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile place to stop and check out. The collection of spices in the cute little glass jars and colorful labels make a wonderful gift and there are some combinations and blends that wake up the curiosity in the inner Julia Child, Rachel Ray...or Guy Fietti. ...or ..Justin Wilson....or ..whatever floats your boat. Even if you are not a Martin Yan, you can still benefit from the little lesson in spice and global information on the spice bottles. I was really impressed with the variety of cinnamons, the very expensive (and rightly so) vanilla collection, the Indian spices and blends (I mean they even have Hing and Ajwain), and the Chili powder blend varieties. The staff was nice. We ended up buying the tellycherry peppercorns from India (gol mirch basically--but I know there is good gol mirch and average gol mirch...so I thought I'd try the $20 bag). I was there because of a free spice jar coupon a friend gave to me. They also threw in another smoked spice. The dry shallots were also picked up (they simply smelled amazing and I had to use them some way). The shop was peppered with great choices (Cmon! I had to!) It was a fun little place with lots to learn for anyone. If anything at all, it makes a great gift to arrange a spice gift box. So, if you are int he Kenosha area, check out Penzy's, it will bring out the Puck in you...but you don't have to listen to this curry scented....you know what ;-) read more

This is a nice store for spices of all kinds. Although a bit expensive, the store has good quality and selection. We stopped in to get some Hungarian paprika and ended up walking out with a mixture of spice products. The store attendant was very nice and always available to help. Love, love, love Penzeys. One of my favorite things is their Vietnamese cinnamon....it's wonderful! I put a sprinkle in the coffee filter with my coffee and everyone who's had my coffee asks me which coffee I use because "it's so good." I have heard of Penzey's spices from numerous people, and have tried them at their houses. The spices are great quality, pricey, but great. You can order them online, or you can visit one of the stores. The store is very organized and I found things easy to find. They have everything from baking spices and extracts to cooking spices and spice combinations. They are also really good about giving out coupons and free stuff if you spend so much. I ended up getting a few free spices with my purchase. So, even though they are expensive, with the free stuff it evens out. There were not many people working there and helping out, but they weren't unpleasant. Needless to say I came away with a bunch of spices to try out! read more

I LOVE Penzey's. The staff is friendly, the selection is great and fresh. You can buy in smaller quantities. I truly believe the value is there, in the product. If you sign up for email notifications, they very often send out amazing deals for free spices, no purchase required. I rate them 5 stars for that.. but I seriously question these politically motivated emails they keep sending. It's beyond me, regardless of your beliefs, why a business would do something that polarizing. I respect your beliefs. OMG this store is amazing. I will never purchase spices in a grocery store again. The freshness of the spices is superb! What I love about shopping here is that they have sample spices out for all of their blends in the store. You can open the jars, smell the aroma, read the ingredients, etc. All spices are in high quality jars, you can also by bulk packages so you can recycle your jars at home. They have hard to find items as well as a great selection of salt free blends and different types of pepper. Their catalog is phenomenal and is updated every couple of months - I have to admit I bring each new publication to bed to read at night and dream of all the scrumptious things I can bake and cook. My husband thinks I am cuckoo. I recently stopped in and created a special gift package for my mom's birthday. The staff was so helpful and patient with me as I took time agonizing over which spices to include as I couldn't make up my mind. I love this store and the spices. Cooking is my main hobby and I have found a huge difference in the flavors I can get out of foods with Penzey's spices. I was so happy to stumble upon Penzeys Spices yesterday. Having been diagnosed with congestive heart failure a year ago I must eat low sodium to not further damage my heart - the salt free options at Penzeys allows me to cook (which I now love!) delicious!, healthy foods.
