My favorite spice and seasoning store. Great customer service. Buy the gift cards when they are on sale. I make my own vanilla and bake a lot so I purchase a lot of vanilla beans. The gift cards make them a better deal. They are expensive but the quality is top notch. The seasoning and herbs are a great deal and they also sell soup bases. I tend to buy refills in the bags and refill my jars. Big savings here. If you want a larger bag and they only have the smaller ones, they will combine and give you the larger bag price. My only complaint is that I want a Penzey's lunch box for my collection but they don't sell them. read more

Everything I have tried from Penzey's has been delicious and great quality! Their spices are quite a bit more fresh and flavorful than standard spices available at grocery stores. The store is very clean and laid out well, with different sections such as rubs, salts, and spices A-to-Z. There are large containers of each spice that you can open and smell in-store, and most products are available in a variety of sizes -- from small trial-size bags to large jars. There is a whole gift section area where there's a variety of pre-packaged assortments of spices that make great gifts. The associate at the store was super friendly and knowledgeable. read more

If you get on their mailing list they send coupons with some pretty good deals, as well as free spices through out the year. Here's a little tip as well, if you buy more then one refill bag you get and additional 10% off per bag, so if you use a lot of one particular spice it's worth getting two to three refill bags. read more

"Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash..." ~When Harry Met Sally My first thought upon seeing the Penzeys store front sign was, "I wonder if they only carry itty bitty penzeys, or if they also stock full sized pens?" Well you herb it here first--you may find no writing utensils, but you will be delighted to discover many dramatic spice blend compositions when you come inside to peruse and partake in pink peppercorns and other piquancies. Just don't rush through the store as fast as your legs can curry you! Instead, take a minute to stop and smell the aromas before plotting your course to gingerly attack the aisles. "I'd like to begin today by apologizing on behalf of you, to me, for how you have treated me these last two weeks. And that apology is not accepted!" ~Melissa McCarthy playing Sean "Spicy" on SNL "Spicy", being Spicy, would surely report that one of the store associates on the day of our visit was secretly Aishwarya Rai, "Mistress of Spices". Who knows if she was or wasn't, but I will say that both associates were extremely friendly and knowledgeable regarding which spices to use to add a pop to your pasta, to help alleviate what ails you, or to divine a spicy spell to win someone over (or reunite Aishwarya with Dylon McDermott, so they could walk into the sunset together). The Mistress would say that spices speak to you--I didn't happen to hear, nor do I normally hear, any voices emanating from spices or other inanimate objects, yet the scents escaping from the clear glass sample jars in each section of the aisles most definitely spoke the language of love. This is where you need let go of any self-respect and sense of decorum. Go ahead and stick your nose into those sample jars and sniff like you're a cinnaddict! Maybe even shout out, "I'll have what she's smelling!" While we sniffed all the various spices and herbs like hound dogs for I'm sure at least an hour, we each sat with our noses buried in the cinnamon jars for the longest amount of time. The cinnamon blend of Korintje, Ceylon, Sweet China Tung Hing, and Vietnamese was like no other cinnamon we had ever smelled before and made us all wonder how grocery store cinnamon ever passes as the real deal. "Lovers may be and indeed generally are enemies, but they never can be friends, because there must always be a spice of jealousy and a something of Self in all their speculations." ~George Byron I'm not sure that I agree with George's assessment, but if there is a spice of jealousy, it must surely be the hot chili powders. Luckily the chili spices of jealousy were not included in the Love People Deluxe gift boxes, which are perfect for wedding or engagement theme gifts, but they do include nice staples like oregano, minced garlic, and Curry Now. As part of a theme gift bag, I would pair these boxes with accessories like a spice rack, nutmeg grinder, peppermill, or a microplane zester/grater, along with a card message like "to help keep the spice in your marriage" or "cook up some mouthwatering memories". "The Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has just published the story of her life. I confess that it is not in my reading table." ~ Mick Jagger Jagger's song "Too Many Cooks" must have been about a bunch of cooks spoiling the soup after not getting their soup bases, Savory Leaves, and Fines Herbs from Penzeys, so let that be a lesson to you. And If you need any further encourage-mint to check out the store, they also carry some seriously delicious cocoa (give the Dutch Process High Fat Cocoa a try!)...it will help you to survive Minnesota winters. It would also be a travesty to leave without the 4S spice, which works wonders on roasted veggies. Don't forget to sign up for email updates to score freebies and deals on shipping when it is thyme to check out. But If you don't sign up, no need to herb your enthusiasm--you still might be lucky enough to visit the store on a day where freebies are being handed out sans coupons as well. I'm pretty sure after running across the city to kiss Sally, Harry probably said to her, "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life sniffing spices with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. Penzeys is my go to spot for all of my spice needs. Super fresh and aromatic, all of the blends and spices we have tried have been excellent and have really kicked up a notch our food enjoyment. Very high quality and staff are always nice and sincere. If you sign up for their email listings, you can score freebies so that you can try new stuff out for free or very low price, very cool. Unfortunately, as of late it seems the e-mails have devolved more into political rantings than the love of cooking which is sad because I would rather learn a new way to cook chicken than learn how stupid Republicans are (just a side note, probably not the wisest thing to call the people you disagree with ignorant and moronic, it never really wins out in the long run and frankly isn't a great way to have a conversation with anybody). Oh well, I don't come here for the political conversations, I come here for the spices and for cooking advice, something I think we all can happily agree upon. read more

I asked some colleagues at my office this morning if they had suggestions for gifts I could buy for our staff this holiday. I was told this would be a good place to shop and it's located near my home in Lakeville, so convenient to pick up. I was about to place an order for a couple dozen spice giftboxes, but noticed something on the their website labeled "About Republicans". Wow. I've never seen a for profit company alienate half their customer base with such hate and nonsense. I'll happily be spending my $500 holiday office gift budget somewhere else now. read more

I found out about Penzey's Spices long before they were in the Twin Cities. Who would have figured they're based just next door in Wisconsin. I was absolutely tickled when Penzey's Spices opened in Lakeville. Walking into this shop, I've never been disappointed. They have just about every herb and spice a cook (or chef) could ask for, including threads of saffron. Just a forewarning, perhaps have a tissue ready. The aroma of mingled spices from every corner of the world can be a bit overwhelming to the novice browser. The mailing list is the way to go. You'll be sent a quarterly price catalog containing great recipes and stories of other interest in the food category. Also, the mailed catalog generally has a coupon on it for a container of a featured herb or spice (or set), many times as a free giveaway. The store is set up very well with herbs, spices, and blends. Most of the products have a seperate container so you can smell what the herb or spice is all about. Gift boxes are for everyone and they have just the one for whomever you can think of. I generally think of myself when I'm buying spices. Don't judge me. I'm the head cook in my family. As mentioned in other reviews, you don't have to settle for one size; or even two in most cases. There are little jars and big jars and larger packets so you can buy what you need or think what you'll use. I buy the large packets of the Italian seasoning and Northwoods Seasoning because they're that good and I use them in a lot of my recipes. Last but not least, the staff is always nice and as helpful as can be. read more

First thing: Note that this Penzeys location has replaced the Savage location. (That was as dumb a place for a Penzeys as you could believe.) Now they're at County 46, just west of Cedar (maybe a mile south of County 42 & Cedar). AFAIC, the best thing about Penzeys is their vast assortment of spice and herb blends. If I see you in there looking like you're new to the place, be prepared to be accosted for my hard sell on their Fox Point blend. It's great on just about everything. If you're watching salt intake, consider Sunny Paris (a similar combination but without salt). And if you want to consider four or five kinds of cinnamon, well, Penzeys is where you want to shop. Prices are effectively cheaper if you buy an 8 oz or a 4 oz bag of stuff vs a 1/4 cup jar or a 1/2 cup jar but beware a false economy. Don't buy an 8 ounce bag unless you can store it properly and will use it within a year or 6 months. It's no bargain if you toss it because it's old. Mary Ann, the "keyholder" (manager) of the store is chatty and congenial and very helpful. All the staff are helpful, actually. Nice people. Smells good when you walk in the door, too. 8-0) You should go, especially for the blends. For an individual herb or spice, go to Valley Natural Foods on McAndrews Road and County Road 11 in Burnsville. You can buy a tablespoon of something if that's all you need. You can smell this store from blocks away. Every spice and blend imaginable is available at Penzey's. If you are a novice, or are only interested in experimenting a little, there are smaller jars to bring home, and you can sample and smell all the spices. For those who cook in bulk, or know exactly what they want larger jars and bags are available so you can bring home as much as you need. All the prices are displayed prominently and most of the spices are in alphabetical order, or you could just follow your nose! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable (I'm looking for that spice that goes into spaghetti sauce, you know the little green one that is long & skinny....). The only problem is that if you love food, you may get a little snobbish about your spices and never buy retail spices again. They also specialize in spice blends that add very little or no salt to the mixture for those watching their sodium levels. read more

They carry everyday staples like Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt and Tellicherry peppercorns and special items like culinary lavender and Aleppo pepper. Penzeys is also my go-to spot for good za'atar, cardamom pods, and vanilla beans. Wonderful store. Always clean and well stocked. Friendly, helpful staff that is glad to make recommendations or help you find something, but doesn't get clingy. Nearly every spice, seasoning, and extract has samples that you can smell while you are there. A variety of sizes to purchase, too, so you can try something new without a huge commitment, or buy large refill bags at a bit better price. Definitely get on their mailing list (I recommend both print and email). You will not only get catalogs that feature great recipes to try, but they have frequent coupons, too. Usually one free item per catalog, plus email coupons as well -- typically they don't overlap, which is why I recommend getting on both lists. Their giveaway items are quite generous. Sure, it is spendier than your grocery store spices and extracts, but the quality makes the investment worthwhile. They also offer greater variety than what you will likely find elsewhere. The only downfall are that their hours are a little limiting. Not easy to get there in time after work on a weekday or over the lunch hour, so I typically have to reserve my sprees for weekends. read more

This is, by far, my favorite Penzey's location. I like the others fine, but one of the gals at this location recognizes me every time I go in. We moved away from the south side of the cities, but whenever we are in the area, I have to stop by to stock up on spices. The herbs, spices, and blends at Penzey's are so fresh and vibrant. It may cost just a little more than what you get at the grocery store, but the flavor makes it so that I've actually started using less than what most recipes call for. Love this place. read more
