Penzeys is my favorite stop for all things spices! I have not been to any of their other locations but this one is our go to. The staff is incredible. Always smiling and chatting with the customers as if we are all family. They have a great selections and good prices. They often run promos (sign up for their emails!) that make for some really great deals (think freebies and giftcard discounts). They have gift boxes for sale that are great for gift giving. Took me a long time to get to trying out Penzey's spices, mostly because I just had a lot of spices to get through first, but I'm so glad I did! I have loved everything I have tried so far, from the really big fresh bag of bay leaves to their delicious curry mix. But the star for me so far is their Mural of Flavor spice mix. I can't get enough of it! I sprinkle it on everything. My eggs, my sandwiches, etc. it's especially good on sandwiches! It adds a delicious herbal quality along with a delicious tang. I usually am able to get a quick parking spot right out front of the store and am never inside for more than 10 minutes, since I go there typically for something specific and then get out. Penzey's has virtually every herb and spice you could want, in a variety of weights so you can buy a little or a lot depending on your needs. They also carry empty jars to help you keep your spice storage space organized and tidy. The store is super clean, well organized, and it smells amazing. Plus, all the staff members I've interacted with have been knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Prices are higher than the supermarket, but the quality is superior. This place is amazing. You need a spice, they probably have it. They even have some types of seasoning's where they will have multiple types of the item. Think peppers, salts, curry's, and cinnamon, and more. Not sure if that is the spice you want? Stick that snout of yours in the sniffer sample that they usually offer. My favorite though is the prepackaged spices. Going to a wedding but want to give something else besides what is on the list? Come here. My family really wasn't impressed by any of the spices we bought. They were bland to mediocre at best. Our dinner party wasn't exactly a success either, with the same comments. I am a big fan of Penzeys spices. The retail stores are closed to in store shopping during the pandemic. Emails from Penzeys indicated that they were running behind on shipping from the main warehouse and urged use of curb side pickup at local retail outlets. I tried this out and found it pretty awkward and next time I will plan ahead and have my spices shipped to me directly. The procedure is to order on line from Penzeys website and indicate that you will do a local pickup. I found online ordering to be a bit challenging and then had to wait several days before the store called me and told me my order was ready. I ordered from the St Paul store even though Uptown is closer because of the car jackings and other incidents have made Uptown a no go for me. It was a rather long trek to St Paul but the pickup went okay. However as I stated earlier I will use direct shipping from the warehouse next time. read more

I love Penzeys Spices. It is like being a kid and collecting something cool like Pokemon cards or baseball cards, now as an adult I collect spices and try out new recipes with them. This national chain offers unique and affordable spices, and if you get the catalog you'll get coupons for free spices, and super reader-submitted recipes (which means they're easy); all the recipes I've tried have immediately become household staples. So I headed down to Grand Ave. with my coupon for free Pasta Sprinkle and left with oregano and chili powder as well. This specialty store is incredibly exciting, due to all the possibilities. Each spice has a "sample jar" where you can sniff (and maybe taste. . . if nobody is looking) your spice of choice. Six stars. Life was barely worth living at all, until there was Penzey's. The spices are high quality and really can't be beat. The selection is incredible. There is frequently something new to try each time I go. Workers are generally knowledgeable, and they like their jobs. The organization of the store can be tough to figure out and find what you need. There isn't any parking and the hours are somewhat limited. That they are often less expensive by the oz. makes it worth my very short trip. If you live farther away make the trip for the smell. My spice cabinet looks like a mini Penzey's I use them Evey day. I feel elite just by having a PENZEY'S in my neighborhood. I like that I can by a small jar of a spice, such as cardamom, ground ginger, and other items I use about twice a year. I don't plan ahead for using spices, and often have to get something on the fly, after I discover I'm almost out. I hate going to a grocery store for one spice. Anything else doesn't bother me. I'm also a charter member of the magazine PENZEY'S ONE. I believe they still have plenty of back issues, and I have tried at least two recipes per issue. If you get the magazine, they usually have a coupon for a free spice of the month. If I have to choose one I rely on the most it's the chili powder. On my first trip, I walked out with a large bag full of yummy odds and ends and the dent in my wallet was fairly minimal. Penzeys has everything you need to spice up your otherwise bland culinary existence. They don't just have cinnamon; they have a host of different kinds of cinnamon. You don't just get vanilla; you get to choose your kind of vanilla. They also have spices which are usually difficult to find. I haven't been able to find sumac since I left Los Angeles. They had it. It may sound a trifle overwhelming, but the layout of the store and the staff make it easy and fun. The store is welcoming and the smell is simply amazing. The spices come in a variety of sizes, making it easy to just try out a few or get good-sized containers of your staples. Their supplies are also extremely fresh unlike most of what lurks in the grocery store. You may not think it makes a big difference, but the taste and texture is definitely noticeable. Drove 45 minutes specifically for this stop because I like to shop and browse in person to check out new spices only to be greeted by a locked door and a rather unfriendly worker. My kitchen is stocked to the gills with them--everything from ceylon cinnamon and cracked ginger to balti seasoning and smoked paprika---and all of them greatly enhance whatever you're cooking. I am very disappointed with this store. My parents live 2 hours away from the nearest store and my mom wanted me to pick up spices since she doesn't use the computer much and doesn't place online orders. I tried to visit on Saturday, November 21st when I was near the store to pick up spices for her. When we arrived there was a sign out front informing customers that we aren't allowed into the store. Fine. They had a sign with instructions on how to place an order for pickup. We followed all of the steps and placed an order. Once we placed the order a screen popped up and informed us that we need to wait 24 hours for it to be ready. Mind you, we only ordered 4 small jars of spices. We called and told them that we lived very far away and that the website was not clear on the time needed for order fulfillment and were hoping that we could pick up our order sooner. They told us no. I asked them to cancel the order and told them that in the future their signage should be more clear, that people can't just pull up in a car and place an order. The man on the phone was INCREDIBLY rude. Trying to support local but will no longer support this Penzey's if this is how they treat customers. We drove far in order to pick up spices and don't feel like being treated like that in the future. read more
