You won't find a better array of spices in Omaha than here at Penzey's. The staff is very knowledgeable about their stock. It is an amazing collection of spices. If you are a cook of any sort you can find something here. Today I was finding ancho chili powder. There was a sign on the wall giving the heat index of various chilies, which was very helpful. They also have a lot of small sample packets around. The store is organized in an easy-to- understand way so you quickly find what you want and the staff can take you right to it. Be careful if you browse, you are likely to buy more spices than you planned. read more

Have attempted several times to get spices at this location. Lockdown requires you sit in the parking lot, call in your order. Then wait for them to pull it, then give them your credit card number. The rudeness from the person inside on the phone is quite interesting. Both times I've given up and hung up. I'm sure this isn't the fist time a customer has been treated this way. Hadn't stopped in for awhile, but much prefer this one vs the rock brook one as far as having more smaller options ready to go. Prices also seem to be less here. Lots of options as far as single seasonings (salt, pepper, basil, cumin, cinnamon etc) then you have all your mixes and blends... baking spices/extracts. I was really happy to see the kids corner here where they can color a picture while parents shop. My toddler LOVED this and it gave me a break from saying, "keep your hands in your pockets." for the thousandth time ha. They also had the art on display up a sail ship and this makes the inner artist in me very happy. We love Penzeys! read more

I quite like Penzeys for the quality and variety of spices you can get. The location is inconvenient not only because it's a good 20 minutes away from where I live, but because the 72nd and Dodge area is just tricky. It's always busy, everything is cramped, parking is usually limited, so lots of drawbacks to this particular area. They have all the usual spice suspects, and some truly unique finds that I have thoroughly enjoyed having in my spice cupboard. For example, roasted garlic powder. It's a fantastic full-bodied spice that really goes a long way in a recipe has such a lovely deep flavor. They also have powdered galangal root, which I use when making authentic Thai curry paste, and it really is convenient. It has saved me from hunting down the actual root at different Asian markets in town, and the trouble of having to grind it up myself. The quality is also quite high. For example I buy all my cinnamon and black peppercorns from Penzeys because they are just so much more fragrant than what you get in the grocery store. For example, they have the best Vietnamese cinnamon I've ever found. I would suggest some sort of punchcard or loyalty program, as you can spend quite a bit in there and it would encourage me to come back more often. It would also be nice to have some coffee beans or something like they do in fragrance or candle shops. It gives your nose a break from all the sometimes overwhelming scents. read more

My husband has ordered Penzey spices for nearly two decades. He loves them. When he found out that there was a store opening in Omaha, he was one of the first to be there when it opened. He spends a great deal of money there. Come to find out- they aren't the most accepting of conservative people. Those that like our president are quickly silenced or treated like a misbehaving child. Penzey's Facebook page is filled with conservative hating rhetoric- it makes me wonder why they are so willing to take my husband's money if our political stance is so offensive. My husband still buys their products, but at a MUCH reduced amount. I am actively looking for other places to purchase quality spices, and when I do, we are both out of there. Hate me, hate my money. Better figure it out before there isn't much business. Word gets around- conservatives will tolerate mistreatment the way liberals tolerate us. read more

I have been a loyal Penzey's customer for almost 20 years. This is the first place I have lived with a physical store - and it is great! If I run out, there is no waiting for a mail order. The hours are great and the staff is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Then there are the spices! The best and the most fresh you can find anywhere, including spices it is impossible to find anywhere else. If you like Thai, Indian or Middle Eastern food, you will find everything you need to make the most authentic version of these cuisines. And at amazingly low prices - sometimes half of what you pay for stale spices in a grocery store. As for the comment here about Penzey's insulting "half its customer base" - LOOOOOOLLLL. Nah. First off, those hateful views are held by less than 15% of the nation. Second, don't confuse "disagreement" with "insult." Of course, you are free to take your painful-hiney business elsewhere - just want to let you know that you are in the minority - bigtime! - and that Penzey's business has exploded with new customers who respect Bill Penzey's' moral clarity and courage. read more

My wife stopped in a couple times but I think they're nothing but over priced hype. I didn't find anything special about their spices and I certainly don't understand why people pay sooo much for them. Nothing to see here folks. Cool place to go sniff around and only one of of its type in Omaha. I came with my mom looking for Ceylon Cinnamon for my dad's tea. We found some and a very knowledgeable attendant told us everything she knew about it. The place is very well organized and does not bombard you with smells when you walk in. You can take your time and read about them and si questions. They have really nice arrangements and mixes too. Make sure to visit! read more

Please read negative Yelp reviews carefully. If these folks are giving Penzey's one star, it's not because of the products or prices. They just don't like Bill Penzey's principled stances on social issues, such as treating all people with respect. Read the one star reviews, and if you know any of those reviewers, I would suggest that you stop associating with them. They might not be a terrible person, but they probably tend to act like one. Was in pinch and they were closed so I tried a McCormick-I can't go back to McCormick! So I do a lots of online ordering Instead. Just got to keep up on YOUR inventory to make sure you don't run out. I just moved back to Omaha and was very excited to find a Penzeys had opened in my absence. I'd visited their website and seen their catalogs, but had never been to a shop. It was a lot of fun. Penzeys carries dry herbs and spices of all shapes and sizes, as well as special seasoning combos, soup bases, extracts, chili peppers, salad dressing mixes, etc. The prices are excellent. The only thing I don't like about Penzeys is not being able to get specific amounts of something; it is all pre-packaged and the small plastic containers do not have recycling numbers on them. I purchased most of my spices in the glass jars. The staff were helpful and pleasant. I will definitely be going back! read more

You can buy prepackaged spices, like in a gift set, or you can buy them individually. The prices for their spices are not bad for the quality you get. The staff that work in the store are awesome as well. They are helpful in answering any questions you may have. Great selection and very helpful service. This was my first visit to a Penzeys Spices and I walked in knowing one thing I wanted and planning to browse in search of gifts. The clerk took me straight to the display for my known item and was available for questions during the rest of my visit. They do not have late evening hours, so this is a store I need to visit directly after work or visit on the weekends. Plenty of parking in the lots around this shopping area. I have been using Penzeys Spices for years. Yes, you will pay more here than for a bottle at the grocery store, but it is worth it every time. Phoebe mentioned their catalog, and I'm one of those crazy people who is excited every time it comes in the door. It isn't just the recipes, sometimes they have coupons. (Though I credit "Ted's Tasty Shrimp" for teaching me how amazing curry can be.) You can buy bags of spices and herbs in bulk bags. I love their salt shaker and pepper-mill. The best cinnamon I've ever had. The best paprika...spices I'd never heard of but now love like sumac. The sample jars for smelling is such a great idea. Taste is mostly through our nose! They carry four different kinds of cinnamon and the Indonesian is so sweet. I've heard that there are devoted followers of their catalog (for the recipes I guess). Give yourself time to explore and try a spice you've never used before. So worth it. read more
