I've been wanting to come here for years! So glad I stopped in. Debbie was a pleasure to work with, she had lots of great recommendations and was easily accessible as I had questions all throughout wandering the store. All spices have a smelling jar (not tasting) and it gives you a better feel for what you would use it for. Also every spice blend has a recipe! It helps with a starting point for how to use it. Well, all these years later, and I'm still a mega Penzeys fan! Their spices are high quality and reasonably priced, especially if you purchase during a sale or promo time. The store is so much fun to go sniffing around in, and it's laid out perfectly to do just that. You can walk around and sniff spices and blends all day, if your nose can handle it! Still not allowing customers inside, you wait on the sidewalk area (socially distanced!?) until a staff member comes outside and asks "what do you want?". I arrived just after 10am and waited patiently for staff to open front doors. Not one customer was inside but I was not able to enter and shop. After several minutes One of the 2 employees came out and asked me what I wanted. I expected to browse items but told I had to place my order outside so I ordered one small spice I liked. I tried to pay cash but the clerk would not accept it (COVID19) asking for my cc and personal information to confirm the sale once she was back in store. I did not appreciate her disappearing w my identifier and cc for a $5.00 sale. I had intended on purchasing additional spices but was told the store was still closed to indoor shopping!? My concern was the expiration dates of all the spices sitting on shelves . My purchase was only within 12 mos. of expiration. I think they are overplaying the pandemic and do not have plans to return. read more

The buttermilk ranch seasoning is great - I am a Ranch snob and I like to make my own, this seasoning is perfectly flavored to make your own fresh ranch as needed at home! I am pretty snooty about my spice cabinet. I take a lot of pride in seasoning the food that I cook with a range of delightful flavors and aromatics. I love trying new spices and learning about the differences between cinnamons from different regions. In normal (non-COVID) times, Penzey's is a great place to browse and ask questions of their wonderful staff. In COVID times, Penzeys has provided me a small amount of joy. Their online purchasing was SO EASY, and while I can't go into the store to sniff-test the spices before I buy, their small jars are inexpensive enough that I can buy them without worrying whether I will like it or not. And honestly, I always like their spices and seasonings. They are really high-quality and compared to supermarket generics, they are priced at the same level or less expensive. With more flavor and better customer service, Penzey's is not to be missed! Currently they are curbside pick-up only, but they have a large sign in front with their phone number. Order online and call when you get there, someone brings your cute little bag with your order and a surprise to the door and sets it on a little stand for contactless pick-up. read more

We cook at home all the time and use lots of spices. I love how we have this local Penzeys that I can browse and ask questions at. During lockdown, I was able to order and pay for whatever I needed online. Then I would just go to the physical store and they would curbside deliver. But last time I went, the store was open for entry much to my excitement because I LOVE how it smells in there! Spice heaven! Also, the store looks quite clean and has a cozy feel to it, even though it's a pretty big space (on Oracle, near-ish Tucson Mall). Staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, whether in person or over the phone. We use all the basics like garlic, pepper, onion, oregano, cinnamon, etc., and get them here because the freshness is not something grocery stores can deliver on. Spices have to be as fresh as possible and Penzeys are super-fresh & maximum flavorful. Most everything comes in quality glass jars too. They also have lots of harder-to-find spices (like Balti, dundicut peppers, juniper berries, etc.) so our family can experiment with new flavors. They have numerous spice blends that get sprinkled on pretty much everything. No matter what I cook or how much of a hurry I'm in, I ALWAYS add spice, so the blends are very convenient. Penzeys also has fantastic variety of single spices. For example, they have about 17 types of pepper, 5 kinds of onion, 6 kinds of ginger, 5 types of cardamom. I cook all the time, but had no idea there were 5 types of cardamom! They also have extracts!! Fantastic vanilla and the price is excellent. This company knows how spices should be and how important fresh, quality, reasonably priced spices are to those of us who cook. Highly recommend. read more

Ok I love penzeys! They are a great place to get new cooking ideas and stock up on spices. Their kosher salt is amazing and you get a ridiculous amount for such a small price. Penzeys is a baker's dream. I walked in and was pretty amazed at the quality and fragrance of the spices (they have a sample jar for each spice so you can take a whiff). The prices of some are also very, very good. I was impressed by the staff, too. Although it's a chain, you would have thought that the person working there that day was the owner. She was knowledgeable and obviously very in love with the store. I spent a lot of time at the cinnamon and vanilla/extract displays. There are more varieties than you would imagine. Most of the spices come with a little recipe card, so you can get new ideas for foods to make. Lastly, I enjoyed the gift sets!! It might just be Penzeys all the way for Christmas gifts this year. This store is visually gorgeous and gives you a sensory overload with the smells and presentation. The neighborhood is a little gritty (near a declining mall) but well worth the trip. I've been to a a few Penzey's locations and, while nice, they don't come close to this one. If you like to cook or bake (or even if you don't), it's so worthwhile to visit. I will likely never buy spices at the grocery store ever again now that I have finally visited Penzeys. I had read about it a few months back, that it was THE place to go for spices...FRESH spices. Totally true. I walked out with a peppercorn blend for my pepper mill, two cool little jars of "sandwich" and "pizza" sprinkle, some authentic Hungarian paprika... AND because I signed up to get their catalog they threw in a larger jar of roasted garlic (which I've already used.) If you have not checked this place out yet DO. read more

As a food blogger I adore Penzey's. No matter what I'm working on I am sure to find just what I need there. The staff is wonderfully helpful and it's always a pleasure to go in and browse all the spices. Each jar is fresh and they have sample jars set out so that you can smell the wonderful aromas. For a long, long time I was trying to reproduce a very specific cinnamon spice note in an 18th Century recipe. No matter what supermarket brand of cinnamon I tried it just wasn't right. I was delighted to find not different "brands" of cinnamon but different types of cinnamon as well. I finally found that my missing flavor was contained in their wonderful Ceylon Cinnamon which is actually a real cinnamon. Most of the "cinnamon" you buy at supermarkets does not come from the bark of the tree at all. This wonderfully understated and full flavored spice was perfect in this recipe and many others where I don't want the cinnamon to run away with the taste show. Another of their taste triumphs is the Mexican Vanilla Extract. For us bakers just opening the bottle and letting the scent waft over us is almost orgasmic. This is the perfect compliment to any baked goods needing cocoa (their Dutch Process Cocoa is amazing!) or chocolate because of its complex structure. If you're someone who is watching salt intake Penzey's has you covered. They have an incredible array of spice blends that can be used in place of salt in dishes. The Arizona seasoning stands out with poultry or pork. If you are salt eater then the Grey French Sea Salt is a must. I use this interchangeably with Pink Himalayan Salt in my Salted Caramels. I also use it on popcorn because of its deliciously briny taste when mixed with butter. Incredibly, all of this freshness and quality comes at a very reasonable price. The average jar is no more expensive than most upper end supermarket brands. I also keep my first jar when the spice is gone and after that buy the bagged spice which is a bit cheaper. Then I refill my jars in the spice rack as needed. You'll also want to pick up a copy of their catalog or make sure you sign up for the mailing list. Each month or so, a new catalog comes out packed with great recipes as well as free offers from time to time. Penzey's is a must for anyone who takes their cooking or food seriously! read more

OH ME, OH MY! I've died and gone to heaven! First thought upon walking in, besides "mmmmm", is "where in the world do I start?" Luckily and wonderful employee must have recognized my reaction and came over to me to explain the layout of the store telling me how it's divided up. She also explained that each and everything they sell has an apothecary jar with the spice in it so that you have the opportunity to smell and taste. Here is a small look into what you'll find: Peppers (yes, there is a whole section on peppers!), blended spices for multiple different uses, world spices for things like Greek or Thai cooking, baking spices like cinnamon and vanilla, rubs, and multiple other spices that I wouldn't know what to do with but I'm on a mission to find out. You can purchase the spices in 2 sizes of jars, or in 2 sizes of bags. I went with the bags, because they're a bit cheaper. Yes, the prices are high, but that's what you get with high quality spices and herbs. They're not any more expensive than what you would pay for with the high end spices at a grocery store. I also purchased empty re-usable jars that are pretty cheap. I'm going to get more because I'm OCD in my cabinet when it comes to organizing. A friend commented to me this, "My only wish would be to have samples of food with the spices or cooking classes using the spices." I have to agree. They do offer some recipes throughout the store, as well as their catalog with multiple recipes inside, but tasting is always nice. Perhaps a suggestion! *wink-wink* read more
