My experience with First National Bank has been deeply disappointing and financially disruptive…read more About three years ago, one of the bank's employees helped me open a money market account because it was supposed to provide a higher interest rate. When rates later fell, I transferred most of the money to a brokerage account and left a few thousand dollars in the money market account. What I did not realize was that the bank had been quietly deducting a $15 monthly service fee. I accept that I should have monitored the account more carefully, but I believe the bank should have clearly and prominently disclosed that this recurring fee was being charged and explained what balance or conditions were required to avoid it. When I contacted customer service and requested an explanation and a refund of the charges, I received no meaningful help. Instead of resolving a legitimate customer concern, the situation became much worse. I was later told that an employee claimed I had threatened her. I strongly deny making any threat. I was upset and persistent because I felt I was being treated unfairly, but I never threatened anyone. Then, without giving me adequate notice or time to protect myself from financial consequences, the bank closed--or attempted to close--my account. This is especially troubling because several automatic payments are connected to that account. An abrupt closure can cause returned payments, late fees, interruption of services, and potentially damage to a customer's credit or financial standing. A responsible bank should not close an account in a way that leaves a customer unable to redirect automatic payments safely. At a minimum, customers deserve clear written notice, an explanation, and a reasonable transition period. I am 70 years old and have lived in several countries, including India, the former Soviet Union, Canada, the United States, Trinidad, China, and South Korea. Over a lifetime of dealing with banks and financial institutions, this has been among the worst customer-service experiences I have encountered. My concerns are straightforward: * Recurring $15 monthly charges were not sufficiently brought to my attention. * Customer service did not provide a fair or helpful resolution. * A serious allegation was apparently accepted without giving me a meaningful opportunity to respond. * The account closure was handled in a way that could disrupt essential automatic payments. * The bank did not show appropriate concern for the financial consequences imposed on its customer. I urge anyone considering First National Bank to carefully review every fee, minimum-balance requirement, account-closure policy, and notification procedure before opening or maintaining an account. My experience has left me with very little confidence in the bank's customer service, transparency, or concern for its customers. Short Version for Google/Facebook Very disappointing experience with First National Bank. A money market account opened for higher interest was later charged a $15 monthly service fee that I did not realize was being deducted. When I contacted customer service to ask for an explanation and refund, I received no meaningful help. The situation became far worse when the bank moved to close my account without giving me sufficient notice or time to redirect automatic payments. This can lead to returned payments, late fees, and serious financial disruption. I also strongly deny an allegation that I threatened an employee; I was frustrated, but I made no threat. After dealing with banks in several countries over many decades, this is one of the poorest customer-service experiences I have had. Review all fees and closure policies very carefully before doing business with this bank.
