People's Choice Restaurant is located on a busy street in Newark. Parking can be a challenge during certain times of the day. The restaurant is very clean inside. The only menu is posted on the wall above the check-in window. It's nice to see the food being prepared behind the check-in window. I noticed about 2-3 employees preparing the food. This restaurant has probably been around for a number of years and is frequently visited by locals. The menu contains many of the traditional and popular Jamaican cuisine items. I ordered the Escovitch fish. Came with rice and peas, cabbage, plantains and a side salad. $17. Decent price. I must honestly say I was not impressed with the food. I would've preferred to have red snapper as my fish. I think they gave me cod, but I'm not sure what kind it was. I waited a while for my food. Unfortunately the fish was very dry and lacked flavour. Probably not made to order. The rice and peas were not made with kidney beans (as it should be) but made with pigeon peas. That's ok, but the rice was also not very fresh. I guess they don't go through it that often. The plantains were hard, not very sweet and just not that good, in my opinion. The cabbage was overcooked and lacked flavour also. The service here was lukewarm at best. Weirdly enough, I was okay with that. I will say that Jamaican food can be made and taste differently depending on where you go. I've had Jamaican cuisine almost everywhere, in the US, Europe, and in Jamaica. People's Choice unfortunately did not measure up. It's possible that it was just my escovitch fish order? Or just an off day at the restaurant. I would encourage you to see for yourselves, but I would recommend the Jamaican food truck just down the street, or the other nearby Caribbean restaurants nearby. Ive been here three times so far, im not even sure why I went back after the first time. My Mac and cheese tasted like cardboard. The second time there was either plastic or foil in my food. the third time, I ordered stew chicken & I thought it looked good until I realized I got mainly skin in my order. I have become a regular customer, when ever it is inconvenient to prepare my own meal I invariably call on them, their staff is efficient, courteous and generous with their servings. I'm going to give peoples choice Jamaican Restauraunt 3 stars,my reason they went up on the prices,and they are very very very stingy with the oxtails,I order a large oxtail they give you literally 5 oxtails so I can imagine if you order a small oxtail do you get 3 oxtails or 2 oxtails that is my only issue other than that the food is pretty good the portion of food they give is good but oxtails they are super stingy smh and for 22$ for a large oxtail they should give at least 10 or 12,13, oxtails I'm sorry to cheap wit the oxtails for me I possibly recommend them But if you looking to get a good quantity of oxtails this is not the place so I'm giving them a 3star rating read more

OK so my son and his GF is hyped on Jamaican food and have been scanning the area looking for the best. This spot hits above most of the others in the area. They bought me back the curried Goat with some rice (I can't even tell if it is white rice or rice and beans because of the gravy and many Jamaican spots don't use many beans.) The taste is pretty good . Now the goat is the rave. It was extremely tender and plentiful and well seasoned. PEOPLE we need more than 2 slices of plantains with a meal...why so cheap with it. Regular retail a plantain is .25-.30 US for an entire plantain so how much is it wholesale. Why so cheap with it..so weird. The tossed salad is a great addition. The cabbage,,, Why y'all throw a whole cabbage in a pot, go about your day, then come back and chop up the cabbage. Y'all need some all purpose seasoning, black pepper, grated carrots, and throw a little olive oil in that B. Otherwise many patrons will be just throwing it away. Overall a great spot. Food was okay. I ordered the jerk chicken and oxtail. The restaurant itself is clean and the employees were very friendly. I wish the chicken was actually chopped up for my jerk instead of just two big pieces of chicken but they were definitely packed with spice and flavor. The rice was tasty in both dishes. Unfortunately, the cabbage was over cooked and flavorless so I didn't eat it. The oxtail was pretty good as well, parts of it were a little rough but honestly I've had worse. I appreciated the touch of the fresh salad. It definitely lightened the heavy load of food. If I was in the area, I work be interested to go back and try some more dishes. read more

I heard a few good things about this place. Jamaican food is my favorite food out of all cultures. I happened to be in the area today, so i decided to stop and give them a try. I ordered 2 platters, 1 had Oxtails, Cabbage and rice with peas. The other platter was a small jerk chicken with cabbage and white rice. This is why i dont believe everything i read until I see for myself. It was a waste of time and definitely a waste of my money, 38.00 watsed. The food was GARBAGE, HORRIBLE, DISGUSTED, nothing wasnt good but the beef pattie. I specifically asked them was the jerk chicken spicy and they said, YES. i get home, the chicken leg was hard and super dry, the cabbage was mushy and the rice was bland, the chicken wasnt even spicy, i tasted nothing like jerk seasoning on it. The oxtails had no flavor, cabbage again mushy, and the rice with peas was ok, because of the gravy from the oxtails. IF i didnt live in Jersey City but close by, i definitely would have bought that garbage back, Totally unhappy with they food. So this is one of those places in Newark you would think has better food than it does. To me, the ceiling for West Indian food is high so I had high hopes for this place based on previous yelp reviews. I'm not going to say it was bad, because it wasn't, but it was just adequate. I even went to them a second time to make sure that it wasn't a one off bad night. I ordered the goat curry once and the oxtail curry the second time. They give you a massive portion of rice and peas (beans) with the curry and a little bit of cabbage. A big no-no, however, is that you don't get fried plantains with your order. The curries themselves were a little too greasy and the meat pieces too bony. But the flavor wasn't bad. The rice and peas were good, but its hard to screw that up. Well I tried the food for the 1st time today...I got the brown stew chicken with peas and rice and that was very good. I also got curry chicken with a plain roti and an extra peas roti....but the peas roti was very very salty. It felt like I was just eating salt from the salt container. I have been to this establishment many times and this is not the first time this has happened. It is extremely unprofessional not to respect the time of your customers. Stanley is usually around chatting it up, and if you say you know another place that has better food chances are he's been there and he will offer his opinion on it, he doesn't take it personal. He swears he uses the best quality ingredients, and that separates him from the rest. I've been going there for years and the wait times vary, you have to remember that even though 1 or 2 people may be in front your they get a bunch of phone orders. The first time I tried this place which was about two years ago, I loved it. Everything was tasty and delicious. Unlike others, I really didn't find the wait time to be that bad. But I returned there recently and things have definitely changed. The macaroni and cheese noodles were overcooked and mushy and the brown stewed chicken tasted as if it sat in a crock pot for three days. The food here is good but the front store service sucks. I ordered from here twice and the first time the server gave me a very thin plastic bag. The bag ended up breaking and my food fell. This last time I ordered a large soup which was $9. The soup tasted good but the cup was filed with liquid. One dumpling and one small cube of yam. I was like ok whatever if taste good. But my complaint is, The man at the front of the store put my cup of soup in one bag. I asked him to double bag the soup for me because the last time my soup fell. The man bluntly told me NO.
