Heard about this place via Instagram. Although it's in my neck of the woods, haven't had the chance to go. Dropped by today. The place was clean and orderly. I was only one in there as this was in the middle of the day. The one employee was efficient in letting me know what to do but I wouldn't say warm or friendly. She was just very matter-of-fact. I ordered the grilled chicken wrap and fries to go along with a pineapple mango smoothie. The smoothie was good and the fries were also. The wrap was okay. A bit overpriced for what you get. But that's not new here. I only come here for the wraps and sweet potato fries, which are so good it prompted me to start making them at home. More bang for your buck! The small cup of fries is just not worth $3.99 for as often as I crave them. The chicken cheesesteak wrap is the best on the menu! My last couple of visits to HLS were disappointing. I try to support black owned business but when U receive cold food and pay $22 dollars for a chicken wrap fries and smoothie . Something has to give . I ordered the classic grilled chicken sandwich (cold) with sweet potato fries (cold) and a Mo Bay smoothie . I ordered over the phone at 300 pm and picked up my food at 315 pm. Which was ready but how is my food cold already ?! I told the worker my fries were cold and could she warm them up or could I get new fries . She looked at me like I had 3 heads on my shoulders and then She told the cook to re drop my fries . I asked about my wrap and she told a lie and said all their wraps come cold . How do a grilled chicken wrap comes cold ?! Not to mention I have been getting the same wrap forever. Never had this problem . The wrap was also put together sloppy ! At that point I just left the situation alone . The only good tasting thing was my smoothie . I remember HLS with having very good wraps ( spinach tomato ,wheat and now they only have wheat) The old workers were customer friendly and the restaurant had decent prices ! Now their prices are absolutely expensive for the low quality of food and the staff are young kids who have no customer service skills . Years ago this place used to have amazing food now it's awful! The wraps are smaller and more expensive and have zero taste. I got a chicken spinach wrap, paid for extra protein and didn't get it and the chicken tasted like it was out of a can. Save your money ! read more

This was not what I expected. I really wanted to introduce my parents to healthier selections and choices. I thought HLS was the answer and I imagine to some it is. I tried them because they are within walking distance of my parents home- but I did not find a juice bar or even decent ginger shots. Literally the cashier poured LEMON JUICE (store brought) into our ginger shot?!?... not one real lemon in the whole joint huh??? I am really into juice bars, shots, and acai bowls- I really appreciate the ability to have a protein packed meal when I want it.... The juice was worse. FAIL- Their sandwiches looked nice... but I wasn't there for a sandwich - I wanted a natural fresh pressed juice and a freaking ginger shot.. what I got was.... fake and processed. read more

Just paid 50 dollars here and we couldn't eat the food. I'm sad, because we used to go here and it was delicious. My kids would only eat the fries - I tried to eat it because I paid for it but couldn't finish. 1) minestrone soup "tasted like water" 2) wrap was overloaded in sauce to the point you couldn't eat it without globs dripping out with every bite. It also made the food mushy. 3) turkey burger didn't look like a turkey burger at all - it looked breaded but had a hard time seeing it through all the sauce - was not good 4) the salmon salad was terrible - they had photos of delicious looking salmon pieces on salads but what I got was not a piece of salmon, but crumbled white colored salmon that had no flavor - it tasted and looked like canned salmon! 5) i bought fries and they didn't put any ketchup in the bag, this should be asked about in advance or just provided. read more

This is a perfect spot for those who are on a health kick and would like to eat out without the guilt! If that person is you, I suggest you try this little cute spot. So I was in North Jersey visiting a friend and we didn't want to eat anything too heavy and greasy so we decided to visit HLS and it was a perfect choice. I decided to get the turkey burger wrap which consisted of mesclun greens, tomatoes, sweet onions on a tomato basil wrap and I got an order of fries lol. I also got the cookie in a cup smoothie and that consisted of cinnamon, raisins, banana, oats, soy milk and organic cane juice. My friend got the vegan herb chicken and cheddar wrap and the mixed berry smoothie which consisted of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas and organic cane juice. It was all delicious we literally went to town on our food! Overall if your in the area, I encourage you to go to HLS, it's great for vegans, health gurus and just anybody. The prices are reasonable for a restaurant that specializes in healthy ingredients. Both of our meals cost around 25.00. HLS offers nutritious wraps, salads and smoothies oh and speaking of smoothies there's are incredibly yummy and the flavors are so creative. I loved the outpost in Montclair (which is now closed) and I just like this one. This one could use a little bit of a touch up, looks wise. Really great art on the walls, but the walls themselves are looking a bit run down. Just as a first time customer, I wasn't feeling all warm and cozy. The food. The smoothies are great and the menu is plentiful and filled with healthy items from fresh juices, to sandwiches, wraps, and rice platters. I've been thinking about that soy chicken, rice and broccoli dish from when I dined in Montclair and immediately knew that's what I was going to get. You can bet on my surprise when this dish came out and it was deep fried (and sadly flavorless). This was more like general tso's chicken without the spice and seasoning than the light and healthy sauteed dish I was expecting. It was good, but it was deep fried, so much so that you couldn't really taste anything but the crunch. It wasn't bad by any means, but by no means memorable. I'd come again for smoothies and juices and try the various salads and wraps, but my first time didn't live up to the high expectations I had from my previous experiences in Montclair. read more

Today was my first and last visit at this establishment! The one star is for the young gentlemen named Miles. He was very apologetic throughout my experience and tried everything he could to fix the problem. I ordered two wraps, two sides of fries, two sides of sauces, and two smoothies at 6:30pm on a Wednesday for dine in. We received our smoothies pretty quickly but that was the last positive part of this experience. I took one sip and couldn't drink anymore. It was ridiculously sweet like drinking liquid sugar. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited for our food that never came. When it hit 7:00, I went to the front and told them we been waiting 30 min and was wondering what the hold up was. Our food was wrapped sitting on the counter (probably was there for a long time). One of the workers said he will unwrap it and put it in a plate. Why would our food be wrapped when we are dining in? No clue. When we finally received our food, one of the wraps was made wrong and we didn't receive our two sides of sauces that we were charged for. I told the server. He said that they will remake it but can't skip the line so we have two options.1) wait even longer or 2) get a refund. Are you kidding me ? I saw the owner and told him all the problems we were having. He was apologetic but did not do anything to fix our problem and basically said the same thing the server said.....we would have to wait. So...I tried this trendy yet healthy place a week ago and I can definitely say that i wasn't disappointed! I had the egg, spinach and sausage wrap with fresh apple juice! YUMMY! I used to love HLS but unfortunately the last three times i've been here including today has extremely disappointed me. The food is not the problem. The problem is when i come in here and there's no one else in here but me somehow my order is always wrong. My order is not complicated with extra add ons or anything and there not super busy. It's like no one even reads the order. The food is good but not good enough for me to keep waisting my money here and have my order wrong ever single time! Food and smoothies are very good I've been to the restaurant many times. One complaint pretty significant- the wrap was smaller than a snack wrap, size of a small taco style tortilla. For the price it is ridiculous, definitely need to make that a bigger portion. read more

I like their wraps (Thai Chicken is my fav) and their sweet potato fries are stellar as well. The only downside is that the place can be pretty slow at times. I'd probably recommend ordering in advance if you're going to pick-up. Overall though this is a solid spot if you want something quick, healthy, and delicious. read more

At first glance, it wasn't obvious from across the street this place was even open on Sunday morning, but they were. The oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins hit the spot. Just the right amount of brown sugar so that it wasn't overly bland or overly sweet and the portion size was fair for $5. The spinach and turkey bacon wrap - two things I don't go out of my way to order separately- combined quite well together with the egg. This was very filling for $6. The fact that they do their fries hand cut blew me away, and so did their taste. Kudos to HLS, whatever that stands for. The pineapple mango tango smoothie and mo' bay smoothie were both pretty sweet, but nevertheless tasted like they both incorporated fresh fruit. For an extra $1.50, you may as well get the large for $6 versus small for $4.50. Depending on how you like your food to come out, you may not like their style of bringing it to you as it's ready. Personally, I'd rather this than the food get cold. Overall, great food and service in a casual, art gallery-themed establishment. read more

I've been going to HLS for yearsssssss. Today I called to order food while in the midst of running errands. I was calling because I was about 15 minutes away and wanted to just walk in and grab my food and go. Well when I called I was put in hold for about a good 5 minutes. I ended up hanging up because by that time I was already only about 10minuted away and I know it takes more than 10 minutes to make the food. I ended up going to Whole Foods down the street instead. It's sad because I really had a taste for the food. As a side note, I've noticed they've changed something about the wraps I'm not really sure if they made them smaller or took away ingredients or what but something has definitely changed. Perhaps owners changed? I'm not sure but I hope the customer service and food goes back to the way it used to be. read more

By far one of our favorite places to eat in Maplewood. Casual, great food, friendly staff, good tunes, what more do you need? My toddler loves eating at HLS too! Since moving from San Francisco we really really miss good, healthy food in a cool laid back environment.....you get that at HLS. Life on the road can be a challenge food-wise sometimes, especially if you are trying to eat healthily. Being a pescatarian and a wannabe vegetarian/vegan only complicates the search for good food. Tonight I found myself in Millburn, NJ and turned to fellow Yelpers for dinner advice. I plugged in nearby and vegan and HLS was one of the options. HLS provides vegetarian meal options along with smoothies and juices. The food was a welcome relief from the kale salad at Starbucks, which is fine, but you can only have it so much. Plus, it's nice to support a local business with on-site owners and local art on the walls. I had the tempting soy turk'y wrap, which was stuffed with warm 'turkey' and lettuce and tomato. This soy turkey was tasty and actually did taste like turkey. I also had the garden salad, which came with a hearty helping of greens along with tomatoes and carrots and a perfect balsamic vinaigrette. Next time, I want to get the sweet potato fries! I think I got a good amount of food for a little over $13, which was excellent. I just visited the HLS website and read how the Onugha brothers have worked to bring HLS to Maplewood after many challenges. After reading that and having had a great meal, I'd definitely recommend "Health, Love, and Soul" to others, vegetarian, vegan or omnivore! read more

HLS is nestled in on Springfield Avenue In Maplewood not too far from the Irvington border. The vibe inside is very Zen. The food is made to order and they offer take out or dine in. This is a HEALTHY eating establishment. The sweet potato fries are excellent, I don't believe they use a deep fryer because they are not greasy at all. I have been twice so far and ordered the Salmon salad and the Salmon sandwich. I would definitely suggest you instruct them NOT to fully cook the Salmon because they tend to cook it well done . ( That's a no go for me). However everything is seasoned well. And they have a few different sauces they use for each type of dish. The Side order of KALE was thee most flavorful veggie I have had in a restaurant. Sautéed and Slayed :) As far as beverages they sell fresh juice or water no soda or seltzer so if you like fizz with your food plan on grabbing a beverage before or after. Parked on the street just fine. Staff was friendly There were a couple of fruit flies annoying me while I ate but I decided to pretend I was on an Island and suddenly it all made sense lol Prices can average about $12-15 pp I will return for certain. read more

I met my friend here on a Tuesday evening. It was really cold out and the parking situation kinda sucked. I had to walk a few blocks, etc. I only mention the cold because even the inside was a bit chilly. This being my only real complaint about the place. On to the positive... The food was was very tasty! My friend and I each ordered a wrap and split them. I liked the Sensational Soy Burger wrap the most. It kinda tasted like general taos chicken. It was a homemade soy burger, mesculin greens, tomatoes, sweet onions and specialty sauce on tomato basil wrap. I also enjoyed the Soy Thai Chic'n wrap which was soy chic'n, mesculin greens, carrots, onions and peanut ginger dressing and ranch on a garlic herb wrap. We asked for the sauces on the side, which looking back we probably didn't even need. Both were delish, but the soy burger wrap was tastier. I couldn't leave without trying a juice so I opted for the Vitamin Awesome one which was carrots, kale, and apple. It was very sweet; I sucked that baby right down. The atmosphere is on the cold side with green walls and hard wooden chairs. They have cool art on the walls. The overall appeal of the place matches the health food concept. Definitely not the kind of atmosphere you wanna spend the entire evening hanging out in though. I'm not a vegetarian, but if I were this would be my go-to location for sure. Next time I'll try a real chicken wrap or the fish meals. Overall I really liked this place and would definitely come back. I know the Montclair location is closer to me, so I will most likely visit that one. read more

This is a great new find for me! I stopped here for lunch and I was definitely impressed! You order at the counter and then they bring out your food to your table when it's ready. I got the jerk soy chicken with brown rice and kale. It was absolutely delicious! It was pretty spicy but enjoyed it. The kale was very tasty!! I would come back just for this dish! My friend got a tofu wrap and loved it also! Their menu has vegan and vegetarian options. Our food came out in like less than 5 mins! I can't wait to come back to try more stuff on their menu! I also got a cookie in a cup shake! I loved it loved it! So sweet and yummy! The service is super quick and the ambiance of the place is great. Modern, simple and cozy. I haven't been to HLS since Covid-19 and decided to go today (3/21/22). I always order the Chicken Spinach wrap. One of my favorites. Not sure what happen today. The price went up and the wrap got smaller. That I could deal with however, the sandwich was like eating puree baby food. The chicken was unnoticeable and the spinach was missing in action. It was filled with Honey mustard and mush. What a disappointment. Probably won't go back. What a shame. Don't lose the quality of food you are known for cause today wasn't it. Signed, Upset.
