Bessemer location was a great place to shop at one time, but has turned into a pathetic excuse for customer service. Most recently, took vehicle there to have valve stem replaced (tires purchased there). Two months later, same valve stem leaking and dry rotted. Went back and had to leave vehicle for several hours for them to replace what should have already been done. Two weeks later, noticed two lug nuts missing on same wheel. Others were loose. They obviously started them on but never tightened down. Could have been deadly! Guy who works counter in the daytime (?manager?) has a very poor attitude. Goes more out of the way to be difficult and NOT help returning customers than to help. Seems to have the opinion that once sale done and there is no money to be made, customer no longer matters. We have purchased about four sets over the past few years, but have now bought our last set from this location, and likely any Pep Boys. I arrived about 7:10 for an oil change. I walked in the door and Mr Parker asks me... . You got an appointment? I stopped in my tracks. "No. Do I have to have one? ". He replied. No, but you have to wait. Um. Ok. No pleasantries here. I have been coming to this store for 7-8 years. Mr. Parker knows me by name, but today he was not having any of it. He is not always pleasant, but today was the worse. He approached me after 30-40 minutes and said I need new tires, wipers, and an alignment. He said the mechanic will show me. When he approached me, he came right up near me. Dude, back off a bit. We are in the middle of a pandemic. So the mechanic showed me the bars on one tire. Ok I need tires but not today. I need to get home and bring in my husband's car. I asked him about getting an appointment to bring in my spouse's car in about 45 minutes after mine is completed. He said I didn't need one. Huh? BOTH times I was treated like I was a long-time, VALUED customer even though this was my first time using Pep Boys. The managers and mechanics were professional and courteous to me. I asked about the appointment and was told that I would be better off getting there at 7 AM. In a rude manner wouldn't put a tire air gauge now any air. Bay 2 Tire bay guy told me had to make an appointment to have air added. When this location was Big10 they were nice and super curious. Pep Boys has gone down in recent years. I had a 12:00 appointment for an oil change. I arrived at 11:45, and was told that I would have an hour wait time. I asked for what, and the reply was "we have to wait for a bay to open." I told him to cancel the appointment, and the reply was "Thank you, have a nice day." I've worked in the automotive business for a long time, and I did the guy a favor by canceling the appointment. It's one less car they have to work on. I purchased 4 tires WITH road side hazard coverage. Six months later I had a knot on 2 of my tires. A bubble from the inside, causing my car to ride like a bouncy carnival ride! On my 3rd trip taking my car back for possible tire balancing, they told me I needed 2 new tires. And proceed to tell me about the sale they are having of buy 3 get one free! I debated back and forth about my warranty and was told they do not stock my tire anymore and it was discontinued!! They would NOT honor my warranty with an equivalent tire!!! This place screwed my husband on his brake job. Quoted a price but then it ended up costing $200 more. They called 2 hours after we dropped it off to tell him it would cost more because they quoted him the wrong rotors. Not our fault. They had the info on the truck bc they've done the oil changes. Oddly enough, the passenger side caliper is now messed up and they insist that they didn't do it. Fine. But my husband took it in due to a bad vibration on that side and they said "you need brakes and rotors". Not a word about a caliper. So that's $600 wasted. The vibration is worse now and the new brake pads destroyed. Oh, and they said he needed struts. Took the truck to the Toyota dealership since the truck was just bought a little over a year ago and they said the struts are fine. That's not the first time they've called hours after dropping a vehicle off to say that a service would cost more or we needed additional work done. Been the norm over the past 2 years. This location used to be straight up and reliable. Not anymore. I bought 4 new tires there October 2020. Came with lifetime rotation and balance. I've had them rotated and balanced several times already. I've only put 33,000 miles on the tires since I bought them. All interstate miles. They were 60,000 mile tires. I took my car in yesterday and dropped it off for another rotation and balance. Like clockwork, 2 hours later, the front desk guy calls and says "you need new tires". They wouldn't rotate and balance them bc it had X amount of wear. Funny thing is that I had an oil change and vehicle inspection at Express a couple of weeks ago and had my tires checked. The guy there said I needed a rotation and balance and should get another 10-15,000 miles out of them. But at Pep Boys, I suddenly need new tires. I checked my paperwork from my tire purchase and there's NOTHING noted about their right to deny a rotation and balance when "they" feel you need new tires. If I can't get more than 34,000 miles on a set of tires, they need to stop selling them with 60K advertised and just go out of business. This place is a money pit and I'll be going back to Sam's and Costco for tires. Both are further away from my home and not as convenient to get to, but I never had these problems at either of those places. We'll be finding a different place for brakes also. Ok, our first experience with this Pep Boys was awesome. We made an appointment online, showed up the next day and the beautifully seasoned young lady who greeted me when I came in helped give me the best and easiest experience. She was knowledgeable, funny, and really made me feel better about the money we were spending on new tires lol. However, our next experience topped the first. My wife's SUV had a rattling sound coming from the brake area. Brought it in, and two gentlemen, The Master Mechanic and our friend who works up front, went above and beyond to help get a broken brake caliper shipped overnight and installed on a Sunday! I wouldn't have given it even a 1 star if that was an option. Horrible rip off. I had my car towed here after it broke down while I was driving it a few miles away. They had to put a new starter to my Camry. The store manager said that the total cost would be 300. Meanwhile i showed her few store coupons which would bring down the bill to around 250. After receiving the final bill was shocked to see it being 352. She randomly added 15$ extra saying it to be some kind of fee and when i questioned it she casually took it off as if nothing happened. Best poor service experience ever, because it made us step outside our usual routine. Went today to get one tire, they immediately took it back and replaced it. My husband took our work truck to have tires put on it, an alignment and a oil change... service guy said we needed to replace our shocks.. we went with his recommendation. He gave us a price of $1100 - $1200, which is about what we expected. He called to let us know when they finished. The bill went to $1322,??? How is this possible?? When you quote a price you honor that amount. They didn't do anything extra... and come to find out our oil was NOT changed... At this time we are waiting for them to open. She said the front brakes were fine but, I would need back brakes and drums, for the cost of $500. I said NO-THANKS. When I went back to pick up my Rodeo, I noticed a banner that says that Pep Boys will match all estimates. I went inside and asked the same lady I had been dealing with if they would match a brake estimate from another shop, she said " It would depend." On 24 May 2017, my daughter, was traveling home from college in Jackson, Mississippi to Augusta, Georgia to attend her brother's high school graduation. Her vehicle over heated on Interstate 20 around Bessemer, Alabama. After sitting on the interstate in the heat for 2 hours waiting for a tow truck to arrive the vehicle was eventually towed to Pep Boys located at 730 Academy Drive, Bessemer, Alabama 35022-5200. When they towed the vehicle she explained to the shop that she was stranded and trying to get home. First off she waited over 3 hours just to be seen (which was not uncommon for not having an appointment). Secondly, when they finally got around to looking at the vehicle it took them "only" 15 minutes to come back with a diagnostic of needing the engine replaced. My daughter was scared and distraught being so far away from home and hearing this news. She called me crying so I asked to speak to the gentleman and he stated that the engine was no good. I asked what exactly was the issue and he could not tell me, all he stated was we could replace the engine. I asked to speak to the mechanic several times and he always changed the subject or said the mechanic was working on another vehicle. I got up, drove 7 hours (Which I arrived around midnight) to Bessemer, AL to get my daughter who was extremely shaken sitting in her car. Due to nothing being open for me to rent a tower we decided to head back to GA (7 hours) to ensure we attend my Son's graduation. Friday morning we got up and drove 7 hours back to Bessemer, Al. Again I was told the same thing that the engine was gone, yet when I rented a tower I was able to drive the vehicle up on the dolly to secure it for tow. I pulled the vehicle all the way back to Augusta, Ga during Memorial Day weekend traffic which was horrible (and I am a Veteran). The worst part came when I woke Saturday morning to look at her car and upon inspection I found a split in the radiator hose approximately 1 1/2 inches long. I replaced the hose, filled the radiator with antifreeze, checked the oil, started the vehicle and it was FINE! I began looking at this as Bessemer, Alabama Pep Boys was trying to take advantage of a young lady caught in a terrible situation during the holidays far away from home. Being the daughter of a veteran (which the vehicle had disabled veteran tags on it) and she was being taken an advantage during Memorial Day weekend, WOW! I spent altogether $570.00 and 20 unnecessary hours on the highway for a split radiator hose that could have been replaced in 30 minutes tops. I called and informed them that I will be notifying the BBB and Social Media outlets that I have to inform them of the practices that they were conducting.
