Pep Boys - Dover, Delaware Date of initial visit: Thursday, September 18, 2:00 PM Follow-up appointment given: Tuesday, September 23, 10:00 AM Service Manager encountered: David Hoover Service Advisor who checked me in (9/18): Kameron B. Mechanic: Austin W. Diagnostic fee quoted/charged: $100 Total paid: $600.17 I brought my vehicle to the Dover, Delaware Pep Boys for a check engine light and a jerking sensation--an issue I've experienced before. At check-in, I explained the situation to Kameron B., who told me a diagnostic (~$100) would identify the problem. After over an hour of waiting, I was told the issue was the "throttle body injector SV PKG," and I was also advised to replace the air filter. I specifically asked if this repair would resolve the issue, and the employee looked me directly in the eye and said "yes." Based on that assurance, I agreed to move forward. Several hours later, I was told the vehicle was repaired, and I paid $600.17. Problem: On pickup--near 6:00 PM in a nearly empty store--the check engine light began flashing, and the jerking remained. I immediately called and reported the unresolved issues. I was asked to return the next day; I explained I drive over an hour from Maryland and couldn't, so I was scheduled for Tuesday, September 23 at 10:00 AM. Before driving down, I called to say I was running late; I was told "no problem, we'll see you when you get here." But upon arrival, Service Manager David Hoover said the original mechanic was busy and couldn't see me, offering only that I could "hang" and they'd get to me later--no priority for my scheduled appointment, no apology, and no solution offered. David advised that I could take my vehicle to another Pep Boys and they would honor the warranty, but after this terrible experience, I decided to take my vehicle to a different auto repair shop instead. Why I'm disappointed: Work did not fix the original problem (light still flashing; car still jerking). Scheduling failure: I had a confirmed appointment, yet wasn't seen or prioritized. Poor communication: I called ahead and was told to come--only to be turned away on arrival. Lack of accountability: No sincere apology, no clear next steps, no customer care. I chose Pep Boys expecting professionalism and a working vehicle. Instead, I lost time, money, and trust. I hope management reviews this and offers a real resolution because as it stands, I cannot recommend this location.

No complaints about the workmanship provided. No complaints about the parts sold. Yet, here we are with a two star review. I hope to raise it one day, but for now it is stuck at two sad stars. The car needed some professional attention and Pep Boys was able to step up. The only catch was that it was going to take a while. Good news! The work would be completed the same day. At 5pm the call came, "You car is ready for pick up!" Great news. The car could be picked up any time between 5pm and when they closed at 7pm. 5:30pm we are on our way to Pep Boys. 6:10pm we are at Pep Boys, and there is a sad, hand written note taped to the door saying that they are closed at 6pm due to low staffing. But, they have the car! At 5:30 they said come by 7pm. Work that night is an hour away and they have the car. There's some guy outside of Pep Boys without a phone, and they have his car too. I'm sorry, but it doesn't matter how great of a job you do, when you keep someone's car. How are they supposed to get to work? How are they supposed to get home? How are they supposed to pick up their kids? Nope. This has to be two stars until customer service improves. In a pandemic in the 21st century, you can't just hold onto multiple customers vehicles.

At the 54 minute mark car was finally rose to begin work. Of course this was after waiting 54 minutes in the first place for a 10:00am appointment. Before that the attendent seemed more interested in vaping and scrolling his cell phone. Keep in mind my car sat in the garage for 20 minutes while vaping and cell scrolling took more importance. Speedy service doesn't seem to be a thing at Pep Boys anymore. Three times I've been and to three different shops. And I always find myself scheduling an appointment for no apparent reason because they don't keep a schedule and your seen in order of whose there first. They seem nice and knowledgeable but service is at a snail's craw. But a side from all that the work is getting done at a great price so I can deal with the vaping etc. Update. Car has been done for 30 minutes and have not been called to collect my keys. And pay. I guess they're also in no rush to take my money. A snail crawl for everything.

0 stars if I could. My boyfriend went in for a valve cover gasket. There were multiple phone calls back and forth because the person working on his car insisted he get $1000 worth of work done(classic) when he specifically asked for what the warranty covered. They finally agreed to do only what he'd asked for and worked on the car for a few days. He picked up his Jeep with the old valve cover gasket just laying across the fuse box(see photo). Some real stand up guys.

The receipt. Run from this store!

Worst customer service ever! They should close tho store down! We stood at a display looking for 15 min trying to figure out the code book for the part needed... Let's back up to walking past 3 employees...none of them Acknowledged us walking in. Then let's talk about the useless man in the back who after us having to flag him down for assistance gave us the wrong directions to the product. While standing at the display for 15 min an employee walked by...I waited till she got close and then said "this is the worst" thinking ... maybe she will stop and ask if she can assist. Well she ignored the comment. So we were done. We checked out and left. It was the worst place ever. We are headed to auto zone. Do not stop in this store. Truly just turn around and head south a lil bit and hit auto zone! I'll post a pic of the receipt top.

I dropped my car off on Sat (30 April) for an oil change and tire rotation. Pep Boys called me Sunday am to let me know someone came onto their property and cut off my catalytic converter. They say that are not responsible to repair or replace it and refuse to make it right.

1 STAR -- EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL…read more This place is extremely unprofessional. No one answers the phone, and the information they have listed online is inaccurate. I had just purchased a vehicle that is brand new to me. The seller drove the vehicle to my rental community, dropped it off, and removed their tags. The vehicle had not even been sitting there for two hours after the tags were removed before GIR Towing and Recovery came into my community and towed it. What concerns me even more is the way the vehicle was removed. Instead of placing the vehicle on a flatbed, they dragged it out of the community. I sincerely hope there is no damage to my vehicle because of the way it was towed. I work from home and began calling them at approximately 12:30 p.m. I continued calling and sending text messages throughout the entire afternoon until I got off work at 7:00 p.m. Not one person answered my calls or responded to my messages. The phone number they provide is a cell phone number with no voicemail box set up, so you cannot even leave a message. Their information online says they are open 24 hours, but when I physically went to the location at approximately 7:20 p.m., they were CLOSED. I was then told that they actually close at 5:00 p.m. So which is it? If you are not open 24 hours, your business information should not say you are. If customers cannot reach anyone by phone or text, those should not be advertised as reliable ways to contact the business. At minimum, there should be a working phone number, voicemail, accurate business hours, and some way for a person whose vehicle has been towed to actually reach someone. Now I have to go back this morning, and because their posted hours apparently aren't accurate, I don't even know what time they actually open. This entire experience has been extremely frustrating and unprofessional. My biggest concern now is getting my newly purchased vehicle back and making sure there is no damage from the way it was removed and towed.

The reason for the return visit was a "block off" plug just fell out ("rattled out", their words) on one of the 2 new exhaust manifolds that they had just replaced. No only would they not take ownership on an obvious "comeback", they charged me $85 to diagnose their own failure in workmanship. I also requested (me, not them) to have the both valve cover gaskets & all 8 spark plugs replaced. (V8 motor). I was bringing it back for the previously discussed oil leaking valve cover gaskets and the oil soaked (on the exterior) spark plugs from prior $3,800 visit. I didn't have an issue with either their hourly rate or the labor times charged, but I was price gouged over $120 for 8 Champion CopperPlus resister type regular spark plugs (NAPA list, $5.99/ea.) and over $75 for the set of Fel-Pro valve cover gaskets (NAPA list, $32.99). That's more than DOUBLE the list price on parts. I was planning on bringing my wife's Sentra back in again, but not now, not ever. You'd figure with the cost of advertising and new customer acquisition, they would want to retain existing customers, but obviously not.

MY HUSBAND, not my boyfriend, came into your repair shop for assistance with getting bolts unscrewed for our driver side mirror, so we could replace the mirror ourselves. We did not need the mirror removed and the new one put on only the bolts removed. That part is fine; that's not the problem at hand. The broken part is. After my husband left, after simply allowing you to remove the broken driver's mirror and put on our new one, we noticed a crack on the covering of the passenger mirror that was clearly caused by one of your repair guys. We brought it back and showed you because it wasn't properly placed on and it was damaged. You even said, "This is why we don't do these jobs." My husband and I both have photos and evidence to prove every claim. Shortly after waiting to speak with the repair guys directly, my husband spoke to your repair guys while I stood right beside him. We both told him it was cracked and that it wasn't this way before it was a brand new part. He said he didn't know anything about the damage but fixed it. My husband told me not to worry about the chipped piece because this was becoming too much, and he fixed to where you could no longer see the crack and it was on so I didn't bother to continue. Please be honest and take accountability. Don't make false claims or assumptions about me or my husband we have the facts and the evidence to prove all claims.* Again, I DO NOT recommend this dealership under any circumstances. We went in for a simple job just to have two bolts unscrewed to remove the old mirror so we could put on the new one ourselves. This should've taken one to two minutes if they had the proper tools, yet they charged us $90 for what was a basic, quick job of removing the broken mirror and putting on the new parts. We had our own parts and pieces just not the tools to remove the bolts and allowed them to move forward. Fine. $90 bucks. no biggie. But they broke a part of my vehicle, a piece that covers the back, and never said a word. We noticed the damage ourselves. When we mentioned it, they acted like it was suddenly a big deal, asking unnecessary questions about where we got the mirror from, as if that mattered. No accountability. No honesty. From the moment we walked in, the owner Donna even said, "This is why we don't do these types of jobs," as if that excuses her employees carelessness or the damage they caused. A small, simple job turned into a major problem, and the staff clearly cannot be trusted. Donna whomever that replied to my review is rude, not honest, lacks accountability for her staff, and comes off extremely discriminatory insulting. This is my husband for God sakes, not some boyfriend from the street. One of your guys chipped our part and didn't put it on correctly! That's all. We both agreed on this review. Thank you.

I cut my loses. While they had it in there, I asked the receptionist if the mechanics could find out what's going on with my Check Engine light. Now, I had my uncle (a mechanic for 50+ years) look at it already and he told me the light was just faulty. But my car was also becoming jittery and the dash lights were blinking so I figured I'd get a second opinion. The receptionist offered me some scan valued at $110 that he'd do for "free." He came back insisting the problem was the airflow sensor and that I needed to change my filter. I agreed to it but inquired about the light just possibly being on. "No, no, no," he smiled, "It's never just gonna be 'on.' There is always something wrong with the Check Engine light on. It might be the air filter, which is why we're changing it." I'm a mechanic on aircrafts so I should have trusted a tenured auto mechanic's opinion. On my way home, I discovered the light was still on-- go figure! I was too far to turn around so I made a mental note to go back. Two days later, I finally did and questioned the purpose of changing the filter. The receptionist says to me astonished, "I didn't say it was going to FIX it. I just gave you the code." I had no idea what he was talking about. Appallingly/defensively and almost with an air like I was the clueless one, he explains that I had the air filter changed because it needed to be changed, he just gave me a "code," and that "They could run a scan. It's worth $110 but we'll do it for you for free." I'm not argumentative but, at that point, I'm wondering if I dreamt my initial trip there. The mechanic goes out to the car and starts fiddling under the steering wheel. He comes back with the results and the receptionist tells me he couldn't even connect. He says there's something wrong with the wires and that I could take it back to the dealership to get answers. Thank you for wasting my time and money with your sales hijinks, Goodyear. Honesty and communication is the BEST policy. I am NEVER going back.
