Last year I went to get my air conditioning checked. I dropped it off with an appt and I didn't hear anything until the next day. They said they were still working on it. I called later the next day and they said they were still working on it. By the 3rd day I needed it back. I went in and they said they couldn't check because they didn't have the right equipment. Wasted 3 days to not even check. Because of that, the manager gave me a paper saying I could get a free oil change due to it. I have been loyal to this Pep Boys for work that's not done at my dealership for over three years now and I will say that's absolutely over. I have overlooked a few things that were suboptimal service wise but not this latest incident. I made an appointment for an inspection for 10am, received a confirmation the day before, and arrived a few minutes before 10am to drop off my car. Upon arrival I was informed that they were short staffed and could not accommodate my appointment, nor could they reschedule it until FOUR days later. There were three employees behind the desk and not one bothered to call me or email me to let me know they could no longer accept my appointment before I made the trip down there. Then they had the audacity to send me an automated email that I missed my appointment. Unbelievable. I booked a sitter to watch my baby to go to this appointment and the lack of common courtesy (and now wasted expense I incurred) is just totally unacceptable. I realize they don't make money on inspections but that doesn't allow you to deprioritize and screw over a customer. Beyond disappointing and I will absolutely NEVER go back. Cant judge a book by its cover!!! I made an appointment here after getting a nail stuck in my tire. Customer service was top tier! Shoutout to Tom, Angel and Guel. The gentlemen heard my issues, explained some options, and I was in and out in under 30 minutes. It does get very busy, the cars and customers were coming in and out at a steady pace. I left my car at this Pep Boys to have its engine diagnosed. After leaving my car for 3 hours and paid $118.xx. The mechanic informed me my car had transmission issue. Then I took my car to another auto repair shop for the same diagnosis. The mechanic there and his co-workers used the OBD to diagnose the engine of my car. In just about 10 minutes they let me know my car was having some other engine issues rather than transmission. Then they bought new part and fixed the issue which Pep Boys guessed it was transmission (Did the Pep Boys really do the engine diagnoses for my car or they just pretended they did the work to rob its customer?). Now my car is running perfectly fine. Now I realize I dumbed my $118.xx into the trash. The Pep Boys auto repair service should get below zero. read more

I had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever encountered at the South Broad Street Pep Boys. I purchased four brand new tires on August 4th ($736.43). Less than three weeks later, one was already flat, despite barely driving my car. I brought the car back on August 24th and was told I'd get a call in a few hours. Instead, I spent days calling for updates and was repeatedly told my car would be looked at "next." While my car sat on Pep Boys' lot, it was broken into. My belongings were scattered inside and outside the vehicle. When I reported it, staff shrugged it off with, "Well, this is Philly, what do you expect?" The manager initially apologized and promised to fix the issue, even giving me his personal number. After that, he completely stopped responding to my calls and texts. Because of this, I missed medical appointments, lost income from a new job, and had to take my car elsewhere for repairs at my own expense. This location showed zero accountability, professionalism, or care for their customers. I had an appointment for a state inspection. I showed up 10 minutes early for the appointment and am told there are a dozen cars in front of me so I shouldn't wait at the shop. The rest of the day goes by (7 hours, give or take) with no word, so I called the shop to see what was going on and they said they weren't going to get to the car that day but maybe the next day. Apparently, the computer system continues to take appointments far beyond their actual capacity, so just because you have an appointment, don't expect to actually get the work done. read more

Asked if I should call ahead, he said no and that they would expect me. Get to the pep boys on Columbus to find out, one, she wasn't expecting me and this happens apparently every Sunday? The pep boys on south broad takes appointments then when customers come in they tell them their equipment is down and send them to the closest pep boys. Might be worth looking into if this is a pattern at this shop. They are wasting not only customers time, but overloading the employees at the nearby location. DO NOT GO HERE. I should have read the reviews prior. Charged me $2500 to fix an issue where I "would have failed inspection." After leaving, noticed loud banging whenever I hit a bump. Took it back, they said it was another issue not caused by their maintenance, and would fix it for an additional $600 of labor (which, of course, was not covered by the $175 labor warranty they charged me in the original amount). I took the car to another shop, who said the banging was absolutely caused by improper installation of the new parts by Pep Boys ("nothing was tightened down, and the wheels were fully out of alignment"). The worst oil change experience I've ever had. Scheduled an appointment for an oil change and was asked to leave the car overnight (first red flag), no phone call about car being done the next day, had to call and inquire multiple times just to find out when. Pick up the car and notice a slight burning rubber smell that wasn't there before but assumed it was just the city smelling like that. By the time I pull up at my home the engine was smoking, I looked under the hood and there's oil spilled all over the engine, literally dripping down the edges, I call and let them know and they ask me to bring it back, I said no just please do better in the future. The car still has the burning smell two days later after not running at all, I check the oil level because of the smell and it's barely at the bottom bead of the stick. Upon calling back yet again, they say they can't find any record of me having service done, I give them the invoice number and the guy says well if you want to bring it back go ahead and we ll check it out, sir how am I going to drive a car with no oil back to the shop that messed it up in the first place?! Easy to schedule and the people were friendly and easy to deal with, at least on the surface. We've been using Pep Boys for a couple years because of convenience, but most recently took our 2019 vehicle in for an annual state inspection experienced what we believe was DISHONESTY and DECEPTION. We did not pass the inspection due to an issue with "leaking and cracked struts". The repair was to cost us around 1500 to almost 2000 $ if we did it through them. So we opted to take the car and get a second opinion at a more highly rated repair shop which did a much more thorough job and documented the struts with photos showing there was nothing wrong with the struts and that we should've passed the inspection with no problems! We will not be taking our car to this location again, and Pep Boys has lost a long-term customer. Dishonesty & deception never wins in the auto repair business. Took my car in for inspection and they said $87 , which is OK even it seems a bit high, however, they fail it for wiper blades which works perfectly and they charged me another $65 for that.I told them i can get wiper blades myself at much cheaper price eve though I don't need them. I brought my car in because I had a nail in the center of my tire and I didn't know if I could get it patched or if I needed a new tire. I got an email that said my appointment was scheduled for the next morning at 10am and they would call me once they knew what needed to be done. Great. The next day came and went, I never got a call. On day 3 I called to get a status update but they never answered the phone. I called 3-4 times, no answer. On day 4 I went to the store around 5 pm (on a weekday) to speak to an employee, they were closed. On days 7, 8, and 9 I called a few times each day and they never picked up. On day 10 they told me the mechanic left for lunch and I should call back in a half hour. I called back in a full hour and they said I should call back in another half hour. On day 10 they told me the nail was in the sidewall and they needed to order a 225/55 R19 replacement tire. I found that odd because my car has 225/65 R17 tires. I told the man he may be mistaken and asked him to verify that we were talking about the same car (I gave him my license plate number). He assured me he was correct. On day 12 I walked to the store, waited in line and asked for a status update on the car. He said,"You'll have to come back tomorrow I don't have any info on the car". No thank you! I asked to simply take my car and leave and the guy said he didn't know where the key was. I pointed at it in the bag behind him and verified that it unlocked my car. It took me 12 days to get NOTHING accomplished at this store. I'm going to Mid City Tire & Auto tomorrow, they're excellent. It's worth noting that while I waited in line the manager tried to give a customer keys to the wrong car, before realizing he had charged him for the wrong work order and ultimately said the work was free of charge just so he could move on to the next customer. Very disappointed in my experience at this Pep Boys. I came here last year for an inspection and I was in and out within the same day. This year, I made an appointment for 10 am Tuesday and was told they were going to need to keep my car until the following day. I thought this was strange since my car was serviced the same day (within a few hours) last year so I didn't understand why it would take so long. I agreed to keep the car there until the next day and when I called in the morning to check the status they said my car still not been touched and would most likely be done before end of day Wednesday. At this point, I'm growing increasingly frustrated because surely a routine inspection doesn't require 2 days worth of work... I called back towards the end of the day and they said it STILL hadn't been touched and would most likely be done by noon the next day. We're now on THREE DAYS of them having my car with no one even beginning the service. At this point, I just want my car to get inspected and be done with this whole process. They keep it another day and when I call Thursday morning they said they STILL have not touched the car and to check back in around 1:30-2pm. This is completely unacceptable for a company to behave this way and I'm so frustrated and will not be going back to any Pep Boys in the future and urge anyone reading this to do the same. I got so fed up I eventually just picked my car up Thursday afternoon and made an appointment at my dealership. I even called their corporate help line to complain and they didn't care either; they just gave me a ticket number for reference but nothing has been done. The work seems fine, but the customer service is awful at best, non existent at worst. made an appointment for yearly inspection. dropped off at 8am on that day, received no update all day so i called. they very rarely pick up the phone. you need to let it ring through multiple times. they told me that they werent getting to it that day. i asked whats the point of making an appointment then and i wasnt given an answer but was told that if their schedule didnt work for me i could get my car and go elsewhere. my car failed the safety because my passenger side mirror was cracked. i replaced it myself and called back to come in to get my sticker. i called on a monday and was told that they didnt have any stickers and call back. i called back the next day and was told they still didnt have stickers. they said "lets schedule you for next Thursday." So i waited a week and went in a little after 8am on Thursday. I arrive and they tell me that there are 10 cars ahead of me so i should take my car home and come back on Saturday at 8am. instead of calling me preemptively, i wasted my morning around bringing my car to them, to get turned away. I wasnt able to bring it back until Monday. I dropped it off a little after 8am. I never received a call telling me that my car was ready for pick up. I had to call them at 4pm. In the report that I received, it recommended to replace my air filters. The report that I received the first time had the same recommendation and I paid to have them replaced. I asked while I was checking out and was told "that is just what the tech always puts. we didnt bring it up to you because you had already done it". I would not take any of their recommendations because it seems like they put unnecessary items to scam you out of money. I never received an apology or acknowledgement for any of their mishaps. Don't EVER bring your car here! My car wouldn't start, even with a jump. I knew it was likely the starter. Had it towed there against my better judgment. It was after hours, so nobody was there of course. Called the next day to tell them it was my car left there overnight with the keys in the drop box, but somebody kept putting me on hold and wouldn't answer the phone. I called several times. I submitted an appointment request and very specifically told them it's not the battery, it's likely the starter. I kept calling until I finally got someone on the phone hours later. She said sometimes they have the part, sometimes not, but it would most likely be completed same day, and she'd give me a call at noon to give me an update. Nobody called. I called them close to 4:00 pm, and they said they hadn't looked at it yet! They close at 7:00 pm and called me at 6:57 pm to ask me if I've had all of my recalls done. Huh? I told them I had my anti-theft upgrade done in 2023, but other than that, there were no other recalls on my car. I ran the VIN # to confirm. He told me they would "get to the bottom of it". So they called the next day and said it was the starter. Genius. I already told them that! They also said my battery was dead, and I told them that battery is only a year old with no corrosion on the terminals. He said it took them "several hours" to figure out what was wrong. Now I know that was a bold-faced lie. Then he told me it was going to be $1900 to fix it all. GTFOH!!!!! This is a shakedown, a scam a ripoff. Absolutely not. I flat-out told him I didn't have that kind of money to fix it. He asked if I could come down there right away to apply for a Pep Boys credit card, and I could have my car done the same day. He said he'd leave the battery in the trunk, and I could take it back to where I got it to get it charged. Um, sir, how the HELL am I going to take it anywhere without the battery in it? He was a slick talker. You know, as a woman, it pisses me off that they try to take advantage of me. I immediately called my insurance company and asked for the car to be brought back to my house. The mobile mechanic, who is usually wayyyyy overpriced, only charged me $400 including the part. Still steep but better than $1900! Insanity. I sent a tow truck to pick up my car, and they refused to release it, saying i owed them for FOUR HOURS OF LABOR to tell me what was wrong with the car. They also told me to call the police, which I did. Didn't help me any. I had to pay them $750 to release my car for what should've taken 15 minutes max to figure out. Stay away from them. I don't know how they're even in business. And yes, I will be looking into small claims court. If I could give negative stars, I would. They don't even deserve one. read more

Don't EVER EVER EVERRR bring your car to this Pep Boys. I came in for my inspection of my Honda. They said I needed new front breaks to pass the safety inspection which cost $470 (plus the inspection and other costs). After the work was done, my car started making a horrible grinding noise when coming off the breaks. I recorded the sound on my phone and made an appointment to have the noise looked at. I figured something was wrong with the front break replacement that they had just done. When I brought my car back in, I described what was going on and asked if they wanted to hear the recording. They said no, it was fine, that they understood and would take a look. I left and they gave me a call later saying it was my REAR left rotor that was bad; that I needed a rear break job and that this would cost another $470. This didn't make sense to me because my breaks had just been inspected and past the safety checks?! But, stupidly, I figured they had to know what they were talking about. I picked up my car and asked to test drive it with a worker before paying. It was STILL making the horrible grinding noise!!! I pointed out that the noise was still there. He informs me that the sound I was hearing was my ABS and that the sound happens with after-market breaks. THAT WAS THE WHOLE REASON I CAME IN!!! They should have told me this before they ever identified that my rotor was bad (if it even was!) So firstly, they did not resolve the issue I came in for in the first place. Secondly, if they had just listened to my recording when I came in with my car, they could have told me that it was my ABS on the spot, and sent me on my way without costing me an extra $470 dollar which they did still charge me. And thirdly, they either lied about my rotor being bad just to perform unnecessary work and make some money, or they did not catch it during my safety inspection. Either way, a shitty situation! This place rips you off and they WILL find something "wrong" with your car if you let them. In hindsight, I should have taken my car somewhere else for a second opinion. I will not be making the mistake of bringing my car here again. For an added bonus reason to avoid this place. Last year I also brought my car in for its inspection AND an oil change. They told me I needed two new tires as well. Cost me $650. I picked my car up only to find out they had forgotten to do the oil change so I had to leave it there again. One star is one too many. I made an appointment a week ago for an oil change and a vehicle inspection. The appointment was at 8:30 am this weekend, and I arrived ahead of time. It was immediately clear there was a lot of disorganization, and there wasn't even a mechanic on site by the time I left after 9:30 am. I had expected to do a standard oil change in an hour or so, but it was apparent that wouldn't happen. I was told the vehicle would be ready mid-afternoon by the gentleman at the desk. This was much later than expected since I was one of the first morning appointments and didn't need significant service. Around 3:30 pm, I called for an update. A different employee told me there were two cars ahead of me but that it would still be done by the end of the day. I knew the shop was closing at 5 (despite the window sign saying 7), so at 4:30, I went to get the car before the location closed. Upon arrival, I was told the inspector had left, so my car hadn't been touched. I never even received a call to let me know this. What is the point in even offering reservations on your website if you aren't going to honor them? The Pep Boys website says their company values are "accountability, integrity, passion, entrepreneurial spirit, expertise, and transparency." TLDR; got 4 tires they broke my tpms system and cost me another $370 to get resolved. Got all 4 tires here, after a couple months one bubbled and one kept losing air. Found that my tire pressure Sensor was damaged and there was a slow leak around there (commonly happens during tire change) brought it back, they changed the sensor, leak stopped but my tire pressure monitoring system no longer worked. Brought it back, they couldn't fix it. Told me to go to a dealer to get it reset which cost me $100. The dealer reset it, tmps alert came back on later that day, brought it back and they found the sensor pep boys used was faulty and it cost me an additional $270 to fix. read more

Do not go to Pep Boys. They will break your car, even if just getting an inspection. I used them for an inspection about a year ago. My front left headlight was out and required replacement to pass the inspection. I provided the light which was then replaced by Pep Boys staff. However, my headlight assembly began to accrue moisture over time. It has now reached the point where there is so much moisture in the assembly that my headlight does not function as a headlight. Clearly, the seal was broken when the headlight was replaced. I brought this issue up with he Pep boys store, requesting that this issue be fixed since it was clearly caused by their work. They said I needed to bring this up with corporate for authorization. I then called the corporate office and left a formal complaint. I was told I would receive a call back in 48 hours. I did not receive a call, so I called back again. I was told that someone called me and explained the issue and closed the complaint. This was clearly a lie, as I had not spoken to anyone. They apologized and said someone would call in 48 hours. Again I received no call. Again I called back. And again I was lied to as they stated that someone had in fact called me and they closed the complaint. As a side note, in the meantime I had taken my car to the Subaru dealership, and their staff informed me that the only way to fix the issue would be to replace the headlight assembly, about $500. read more

Edwin, the manager told me that they wouldn't be able to fix my car unless i paid the $89 actual check engine diagnostic. He told me that my car would be ready in a couple hours. I called at 6 to check on my car and they said they wouldn't get to it that day and it would need to be held overnight. I figured that would be ok since i figured they'd fix what ever was wrong. Turns out i was wrong. This morning i got a call stating that they ran the diagnostic test and they couldn't fix the car and I'd have to go to a dealership to get it fixed. I then called the dealership and they told me that they do not trust pep boys diagnostic tests so they will have to run their own. Pep boys now refuses to give me a refund. Go else where. They told me that it didn't matter that I had an appointment and that actually they don't really take appointments because they don't know whether people will actually show up. For that reason, they prioritize walk-ins over appointments. When I asked why their store allows people to make online appointments then, they just said they don't have any control over what the Pep Boys website does. What???
