I've had a love/hate relationship with this branch of Pep Boys over the years. The location is very convenient for me, but I have seen the business evolve and not necessarily in the best way because it's all about cost cutting and the bottom line. The hours of operation and availability for walk-in service are certainly positives. I don't think I have ever been scheduled for an appointment more than one day out. They also offer free WiFi so you can sit in the waiting area and surf the internet to kill time. That being said, Pep Boys used to be more of an automotive supply store and repair shop. The first attribute has disappeared, and they now just sell tires and service vehicles. The exterior signage has been reduced in size, and the inside has been gutted and whittled down to a small footprint. The furnishings in the waiting area were minimal and formerly had a communal TV, but that was removed. Complimentary ride share service was previously offered, however that was discontinued several months ago. The service I have received seems to vary depending on who you get as an advisor. Some of them take the time to explain the work in detail and provide follow-up via phone calls over the course of the day. On other occasions, I have had to dial up the main line to ask for updates and a cost estimate. Every time I've come in, Paul has been extremely thorough explaining what's going on and what actually needs to be done. I appreciate that he takes the time to break things down instead of just saying "you need this replaced" with no explanation. One thing that keeps me coming back is that he's honest. As someone who works in construction and deals with customers every day, you can usually tell when someone is trying to upsell you versus when they're just recommending what's actually needed. Paul has always been straightforward and respectful, which goes a long way. Service times have always been reasonable too. If I'm getting something simple like a tire rotation it might take around a couple hours, but they're always upfront about the timeline after they look things over. Overall the service here has been solid and the prices are competitive, especially considering there are a lot of tire shops nearby. If you're coming to this Pep Boys location, I'd definitely recommend asking for Paul. Since he used to be a mechanic himself, he explains things in a way that actually makes sense. Dying battery needed to be replace, dealership services can be costly and usually have no availability for weeks... not the case with the friendly neighborhood Pep Boys, and I have to say, I was also very impressed with their automated system, most of the process to request the service was done online, made the appointment, dropped the car off, received a text with a link to the digital invoice, ( I think this was my favorite part ) not need to play phone tag w/ the service tech, overall I really enjoyed the hassle free experience, I would say their waiting lounge is a bit outdated.. but not a huge concern since there are plenty of other places to wait around the corner i.e. coffee shops, target, home depot, etc. thanks again Pep Boys of Genesse! read more

these guys are non professionals. I used their service to fix the malfunctioning AC on my Kia Sportage. The guy called Paul was impolite and unprofessional on the phone. I left the car overnight at the shop for the work. when I picked up the car, I realized that the emergency tire set was missing. they took it. I reported this to the shop manager, and they promised they would investigate and provide me the video recordings. they never returned to me. I brought my vehicle in to have them look at an issue (A/C not working) that popped up after a different Pep Boys worked on the vehicle the week prior. The guy who checked me in was not friendly or particularly helpful, but did what I asked. They diagnosed the issue as being an error on the part of the other branch and proceeded to fix it. They were able to repair it same day since it was just a matter of reconnecting the harness properly and no parts were needed. However, I had to call a couple of times to get information as I was told to expect an update within a couple of hours, twice. I did not receive any communication either time so each time I called after 3-4 hours to get info (which they were then able to give me). So the work got done same day and they did not charge me for the labor since it was a Pep Boys error. That being said, I was charged the $50 fee for them to inspect the A/C so they could diagnose the error in the first place. I'm sure this is Pep Boys overall policy so I don't fault the local shop for this, but you would think that if the error was found to be on them that any inspection fees directly related to their error would be waived. read more

Turns out they didn't order the tire at all and then demanded that I bring my truck in and sit around for three or four hours while they try to have the tire delivered. Dropped off my keys at 10, was told to come back about an hour and a half. Seemed long but it was a Sunday so I was just glad they were open. Came back at noon and my car was in the same spot, they hadn't even started it yet. What's the point of having an appointment system if your car just sits in the parking lot for 2-3 hours before they even start the work? What's the point of giving a quote time if the quote is off by multiple hours? I had the same experience with a brake job in the past but it was a brake job and I know they can take some time so it didn't bother me. But an oil change? With an appointment? Anyway, they do good work here in my experience but do plan on leaving your car here all day no matter how small the job. read more

And if I overlooked something somewhere here, I don't mind giving a shout out again to Fernando and his crew at the Genesee Pep Boys. Only location open on a Sunday afternoon and close by PB when I started to hear the aweful screechy grinding synonymous with pads that are no more. Fernando took care of us in a timely manner. His people diagnosed the trouble spots accurately and for a fair price. Would highly advise against using this Pep Boys location. I went in for a simple new tire installation. Even though my appointment had been scheduled a week ahead of time, there were no available technicians until well over an hour after the scheduled appointment time. This resulted in a simple service taking over 4 hours. When I politely asked for an estimated completion time, desk employees did not even bother to check in the shop and simply said "soon" which turned out to be another hour. And after all of that the new tires are horribly out of balance and I will need to go spend more money to have them rebalanced. To top things off, the entirety of my time in the waiting room was spent enduring trashy daytime television blaring at the highest volume. In conclusion, do not waste your time here. read more

I made an appointment online yesterday for 12:30 pm today. I showed up almost 30 minutes early and within an hour, my car's oil change was complete. I like the fact that they have wi-fi and a waiting area so I was able to get a little work done while waiting. I also like that they have a "bring your own oil and filter package" for $22 labor and offer military discounts. Only two minor issues came up: 1. When I got in my car, I noticed that the new service reminder sticker was peeling off and then I discovered that they did not remove the old ones! Then again, the Chula Vista - Tierra Del Rey location did the exact same thing which I discovered today! 2. Two of the three credit card swipe machines didn't work so I got moved to another register a few times. Very minor inconvenience. Rip off extras! I went here right after I had a flat, because I bought the tires here and had road hazard replacement coverage. After waiting longer than promised (they never use their online notification system anyway), I was told my 12 volt battery was essentially dead and would cost $400 to replace. My car has a monitoring system that tells me things like this ....so I knew something was up. I said no. (While waiting I also heard another customer told their battery needed replacement who was there for something else). I took it to Auto Zone and Napa Auto Parts where they both did a free test...and both said...NO PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY! Last time I was in for something else....they said shocks! No picture taken of the supposed leaking shocks. Wasn't an issue when taken somewhere else. Avoid this place.....they love making things up! read more

My girlfriend and I brought our car in for a simple brake replacement. We had an appointment at 9:00 AM and were told it would be done in about an hour and a half -- which seemed reasonable. We planned our morning around that timeline and came back at 11:30 expecting the car to be ready or close to it so we could go to work at 12. We had called at 10:30 to check on the work and they said around 11:30 it would be done. When we arrived at 11:30, we were told that the parts had just arrived and that they were only now starting to work on it. No call, no heads up, nothing. Just wasted time and a lot of unnecessary waiting around. We understand that delays happen, especially with parts, but the complete lack of communication was really frustrating. If they had simply called us when they realized there was a delay, we could've adjusted our plans. Instead, we were left in the dark for over two hours and late for work due to their lack of decency. Fernando was helpful and sympathetic but the worker Riley was not. Won't be coming back here. No other Pep Boys has given us this issue before. read more

BEWARE!!! Do not trust this shop with your car. Safety issues, poor quality control and awful customer service. I replaced my steering rack and outer tie-rod ends and brought it to this shop for a simple alignment. From there, whoever performed the alignment proceeded to wrench on the new parts until the steering rack boots became so twisted that they had torn. See attached photos. For reference, they boots should look like an accordion. I returned the vehicle to the shop, where I was told a senior technician would replace the torn and twisted steering rack boots. When I picked up the vehicle the second time, the outer tie-rod ball joint boots were torn, the replacement steering rack boots easily slide off and the cotter pin securing the tie-rod end to the lower control arm assembly slid freely in and out. This is a huge safety issue. That pin prevents the castle nut from backing out and dropping a crucial component for steering out of the car. Imagine losing control of your car's steering on the freeway. Upon closer inspection, the technician did not align the hole with the castle nut openings and instead of clocking the nut another 5 degrees to align the two properly, the shop instead placed a smaller pin into the hole because the correct size pin would not fit. The damage caused by the shop to the other items mean that those components will prematurely wear,suffer a shorter lifespan and require a sooner replacement. I am not confident in any of the services that the shop offers or work that it performs. I've tried to resolve this issue with the shop in private for the past month. I've have regularly called the shop and messaged the shop via email multiple times. The manager, Antonio Mora, does not follow through on status updates or any actions that the shop has agreed to. There is no urgency or accountability. I was told by the manager that the parts for the car were ordered 5 days previous and when I followed up to determine a time to collect the parts, the representative informed me that no parts had been ordered. I've requested a refund for the alignment, the cost for parts(or their replacement) and the cost of labor to remove the parts that they damaged and install new parts. PepBoys has done none of these. Go elsewhere for automotive repair. There is no attention to detail and there are serious quality and safety concerns. The shop's customer service and follow through is lacking. I left with 2 tires, an alignment a new battery and a shopping list of about a dozen items they'd be happy to take care of for an additional cost. I was due for an oilchange so I had them take care of it. They did the work fairly quickly. BUT my change m zoil light is still on. An easy fix but I paid them to do it. If I could relive that day I would have got the one tire fixed, and got my battery at Autozone and took my car to Auto Repair 4 Less for a second opinion regarding alignment and had them do my oil change. I went in and made an appointment, and they left me know between 35-45 mins. An hour and half went by and I asked regarding an ETA and they said 20 more mins. Another 30 mins went by, I asked for another ETA. They said another 20-30 mins. They don't care about your wait with incorrect wait times and no urgency. I brought my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica in for some 100k maintenance (new plugs, break fluid, timing belt). Long story short-- they drained the break fluid, but then forgot to put in new fluid. So, when I picked up the car, upon turning on the car, the dash momentarily flashed "check break fluid". I chalked that up to a residual warning from the process, but decided to pop the hood and check fluid levels anyway. Good thing I did. No break fluid. So, I went back in, let them know there was no break fluid, and waited another 45 minutes while they brought the car in to add the fluid back. They were apologetic, and confused as to how it could happen. So was I. Now, here's the thing that really irked me. When I called earlier to check on status, the person that answered the line said car was pretty much ready, and that the technician was just out taking it for a test drive after all the work was completed. That was clearly BS in retrospect. If they HAD taken it for a ride, they would have either A) seen the break fluid warning light, or B) had the breaks fail while driving. Point is -- they never took it for a test drive. And, if I'd have just ignored the brief "check break fluid" warning on the dash, there's a good chance my breaks would have failed on the way home. For all this trouble? They offered me a free oil change. I appreciate it. But honestly, shouldn't they offer a free break fluid exchange as well? I won't need it on this car any time soon, but on my others... oh well. read more
