Spike's Inessential Scholarly Discourse: This is authentic Mexican food. So, don't go there. Everyone working in the restaurant is Hispanic, from the dishwasher to the owner. Their recipes for "their version of traditional Mexican food" didn't come from a Betty Crocker cook book. What is that white sauce served with the salsa and chips here? I have encountered the same at several other small-town Mexican restaurants. No, it is NOT queso. It has no cheese taste. Here is the best description I can come up with; have you ever opened a can of Campbell's cream of chicken soup. That is what this stuff looks like; concentrated cream of chicken soup. It is a thick gelatinous, semi translucent liquid. It tastes almost like cream of chicken concentrate. When I have run across it in other restaurants, I have been mistakenly calling it bad watery queso. It has no resemblance to queso other than color. It is most commonly served in these traditional style restaurants. It does nothing for the meal other than make you wonder what you are eating. What is it??? As I usually do, I asked for salsa picante. Pepino's was a very different version. It was a warm bowl of tomatoes, with onions and smokey jalapenos simmered to a thick chunky stew. Very little heat or spice. Disappointing. The relleno I had was authentic and traditional, a poblano filled with lightly seasoned ground beef cooked on the flat top in a puddle of egg, then rolled up with the egg like a blanket. I am not a big fan of this traditional style relleno. My meal also came with diced potatoes grilled with onions and green peppers. Different. The tamales my wife had were good. The beef was lightly seasoned. The tamales weren't just big logs of masa with a small amount of filling. There was plenty of beef in them. Conclusion. Pepino's is not recommended. read more

Stopped by for lunch today. It was a short drive from OKC. Luckily we arrived anout 1130 because by 12 it was packed. The parking area is ample for most of the day but when it gets crowded the spaces disapear quickly. The service was excellent. We were greeted promptly and actually had our food within 10 minutes of ordering. The staff stopped by several times to ensure we were satisfied. The dining area was clean and the staff maintained it well. They had tables and booths to sit at. They also had a large area in the back for larger groups. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas Blanco with rice and beans. The food was filling but not overdone where you feel uncomfortable when you leave. The chips were good and served both salsa and quesa. The salsa tasted well but not too spicy. The quesa was a little runny but a decent taste. My overall experience was great and if I ever to take a trip back to Okemah I'll stop by again! read more

Good food for a one stop Okie town in Okeemah. Do not propose to your gal in this place because she will never let you forget it. In other words, ambience is lacking but who needs that when food is on point? I got the enchiladas with green sauce and asked for the spicy warm salsa in addition to the red for pre-meal chip dunking. Very pleased. Highly encourage a visit to this unpretentious spot. A friend and I met here for lunch. We had not seen each other in years and picked this area as a half way stopping point. The atmosphere is definitely not fancy but it was so comfortable & welcoming. We were able to sit for a couple of hours and visit without loud music or noise. And yes we did leave a larger tip for sitting at the table longer. It had a quick turn over with great service. I was a little disappointed they didn't have shredded beef but the steak fajitas were wonderful. We ordered off the lunch menu and were surprised at the amount of food. Good food. This was a diamond in the rough. It looked closed from the outside but inside, so vibrant. The beautiful aromas as soon as you walk in are only a 'taste' of the yum food! Had lunch here during work travel in this area. It was recommended by some locals. Upon seating, I was served with chips, queso, and salsa as well as flour tortillas. Service was quick during the beginning of the lunch rush. My server was good and had a sense of humor - I asked where the restroom was and he jokingly noted it was removed and then said jk and pointed me to the women's restroom - back to back jokes lol. Traveling through and stopped for lunch on a tip from the maintenance guy at the Loves across the highway. Typical Mexican looking restaurant, nothing fancy. I was seated immediately and had complimentary chips, salsa, and queso placed in front of me before I could even look over the menu. Took a while for the waitress to show up but they were busy and she apologized immediately. I had my chips and stuff to curb the hunger. Ordered the green chili enchiladas but she let me try one spinach enchilada and one green chili. I'd never had spinach enchiladas before but it was delicious, as was the green chili one. They came with a white cheese sauce, rice, and beans. They also had a spicy salsa that tasted like roasted poblano and came out wArm. Overall excellent food and great value. Overall the food, service, and dining experience here was excellent. I went for the Mexican dinner, which included two enchiladas, a tamale, and crispy taco. We live in Okemah but this is our favorite Mexican restaurant we have ever found. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the food is always great. They are very consistent. I would recommend anybody wanting some good Mexican food to stop by Pepino's. They are also located right off of I-40, so it is very easy to get to. read more

This place is terrible and will not stand by their product. I had a call in order which was burned and terrible. I called to talk to the manager since I don't live in the same town. The mgr said he would make it good but when I was back thru that town a couple of weeks later he said he had already replaced it and would not.
