Amazing food! The Nasi Goreng and Sambal Matah are perfect, just the right combination of flavor and spices.

They are pretty well known for their lobster laksa, which is $19 on its own. We ended getting the combo that included curry chicken rice, curry fish balls, roti, a soda and a milk tea for $39. The fish balls and curry chicken rice were pretty standard. The chicken has a slight spiciness to it. They do give plenty of rice. Now for the star attraction, the lobster laksa comes with a whole lobster tail. It's a pretty small lobster tail that was a bit salty. Certainly not the best lobster tail I've ever had, but at this price point it's rare to get a lobster tail. The laksa itself was quite good. Really like the soup, which as not super thick but it was creamy, sweet and flavorful. Noodles and the fish cake inside were decent. Overall, it's a good amount of food and decent deal for the price.

It came with 4 prawns, a small sliced boiled egg, some tofu(?) thingy and bean sprouts. The noodle consists of a mix of vermicelli and round noodles. The major disappointment was that the soup was neither thick nor flavorful. It was watery and as if the vendor cheaped out on adding a teeny bit more sauce. Also, the portion was not very generous. Usually when i order from other restaurants and vendors, the dish would come with other toppings such as fish balls and tofu puff, plus the portion was a bit more. This was my third time trying this vendor after a long time as i was also not impressed by previous visits. I don't think I'll ever go back again. This is more of a 2.5 stars experience.

However, I was a bit disappointed but not too much as prices were decent depending on what you get. We got the chicken laksa, Nasi goreng, Mongolian chicken, and kuih lapis. Chicken laksa is the ideal order as the soup is decent and the pricing is fair. It is not the best as the soup didn't carry much flavor and the noodles were a bit on the softer side. It was filling however. Nasi goreng is solid. The vegetables felt frozen reheated and wilted, but at least the cucumbers were fresh. The amount of shrimp, squid, and fish cakes was dismal. Flavor profile is good. The Mongolian chicken is okay. It's not fried as the batter is quite soft. It is saucy which my friends were craving. I enjoyed the flavor profile of this one though. The dessert is good. Kuih Lapis is a colorful dessert so it appealed to me in both taste and presentation. One red flag I noticed is that I heard beep after beep of microwave sounds. It's as if all the dishes they prepared well in advance and just reheat for us, plus they walled off the kitchen and the back completely, giving the impression that they want to hide something. Most renowned places won't hide the back like that, as you can at least take a peek of what's cooking behind the scenes in most places. Service is good as they refill complimentary tea throughout our dining experience. Pay at the front for the bill.

VERDICT/VALUE With a menu from across a variety of Asian cultures, Tropical Island tries to everything to everyone and at least for this one takeout experience, it does - falling short only on portion size. === 2. FOOD Our order was takeout and so the portion sizes were small (see photos for scale of the smaller tin pans with chopsticks); however, the quality of the food was decent overall! Chicken Satay ($13) Four skewers come at this price with some sort of mild-ish spicy oil-based peanut sauce on the side. The chicken is relatively meaty and tender! Beef Vegetable Delight ($19) With lotus root, carrots, onions, celery, and broccoli on tap with thin slices of beef, this is a dish you'll enjoy with rice or another starch. Green Beans ($19) One of the recommended house dishes by the server; it was decent - no minced pork like that found in Chinese restaurants, but it does have red and green peppers and onions. === 3. SERVICE The server at the counter was good and professional, balancing myself, app-order delivery drivers, and dine-in guests. The staff here seemed to speak English and Manadarin. The food was prepared fairly quickly, tho this may be due to having only 4 tables of dine-in guests at the time of order. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's not a looker - it starts with narrow hallway with two small bench-type seats for those waiting at the counter, before opening into an older seating area. Wheelchairs and baby strollers should fit well enough once you get through the hallway. Parking is interesting - a few spots are located out front (watch out for one with a small Do Not Park sign on the wall) and there are a few more spots across the alleyway.
