The restaurant is clearly a recent renovation, at the very least, and looks lovely inside. The portions for both starters and mains were generous and more than we could eat, but that was partially because we weren't tempted to finish them. The food and drinks are uneven. Both our cocktails were made with a heavy hand on the sugar syrup. For example, I would have expected that in a rhubarb Paloma, the tart rhubarb would undercut the sugar pleasantly, but the rhubarb just seemed to be there to turn the copious sugar syrup a light pink. The wine list is also pedestrian. I ordered a lemon pasta with added prawns. The prawns were cooked well, and the sauce with capers was decent. The farfalle pasta itself, however, was complete mush. Al dente does not seem to be a concept the kitchen cares about, yet at $40 for a pasta dish, I have to say I expected properly cooked pasta at the very least. My partner said his mahi mahi was a bit overcooked but otherwise fine. It is disappointing that in an area of the world with excellent local seafood, few of the fish dishes they offer feature local fish. Service was...relaxed. For example, we ordered cocktails early on (15 min after we arrived, when the staff finally took notice of us), and they arrived well after our appetizers and just before our mains. Fortunately they didn't seem fussed about the time limit stated when we reserved. All in all, we're unlikely to return when we're back on Salt Spring.

We found the food unremarkable - standard fish, standard chips, standard coleslaw, standard tartar sauce. All fried food is pretty standard, pretty greasy, but not any better or worse than many fish & chips shops. So why a 3-star rating rather than 4-stars? First, there is there menu and pricing: What is called a 1-piece fish & chips comes with 2 pieces - all identified fish comes with one extra piece. It's a gimmick, and mostly just annoying. 2nd, there is a charge for everything -- Want tartar sauce? There are three sizes, three prices. Want to substitute onion rings for the fries? Can't do it, even with an up-charge, though you can order fish and you can order onion rings, each separately, each with its own price. Coleslaw? Yes, but not instead of fries. And the coleslaw is pricey - a good sized portion, but a substantial price none-the-less. The portion sizes are reasonably large, but the incessant a-la-carte with each item with a price - one feels nickled and dimed to death. The atmosphere - ok, 1950s-ish, nothing special. The staff, friendly and attentive, but young and inexperienced. And then there was the problem with the cooking -- we got 5 pieces of fish (ordered 2 and 1, which is really 2+1 and 1+1 = 5). Four of them were pretty standard. One was undercooked - cooked on the outer edges (under the fried batter), and raw and translucent on the inside. Yes, they took that off the ticket, so I didn't have to pay for it, but biting into a piece of raw fish with the outside so hot it almost burned my mouth and the inside uncooked - not so pleasant.
