Once she was stable, the hospital's palliative care team recommended discharging her to hospice care. I spent a lot of time coordinating with the hospital hospice representative only to be told a day before discharge that their agency could not care for my wife since she had an open and infected surgical wound plus another open healing wound. None of the other major hospice companies would help us either. As you can imagine, this caused us a great deal of stress and anxiety. After making a few calls, the doctor found Burbank Hospice Care who stepped up and took on the challenge This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Burbank Hospice team took on my wife's case energetically, managed the difficult wounds with a "wound vac" and pic line, and monitored her lingering pneumonia and other infections. Slowly, over time, my wife rallied with this excellent care despite the fact that the doctors only gave her days to two weeks to live after she was sent home. Burbank Hospice staff provided all of the necessary equipment, supplies and prescriptions, which was monitored by regular visits from the agency's nurses. Whenever I have a concern or a worry, the Burbank Hospice team responds quickly and with compassion. Recently, my wife had another setback after a procedure and spent three weeks in the hospital. Again, Burbank Hospice was there after discharge to oversee her care and she is now resting comfortably. My wife's battle with this chronic illness has been an isolating experience with few visits from family and friends. The Burbank Hospice team is now like family to us. Their care, compassion and responsiveness have taken a lot of stress out of a very stressful situation. We are grateful for their support and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking hospice care for a loved one.

My father passed away 2 months ago, and I feel I must write an update to my original review to show…read morethe impact the Agape nurses made on my father's last days. Excuse me if this review is long, but there are things I feel must be said. My father had 2 nurses visiting him every week for approximately one year. His primary nurse Susan and hygienic nurse Mei. I not only appreciate them for their friendly and professional care, and compassion, the way they interacted with my father returned some dignity that got lost ever since he became very ill. Doctors and nurses at other establishments stopped speaking directly to my father even though his hearing and mind are all there, and they turn to me for all questions and answers. They gave me all the forms and went through our meetings in an almost mechanical manner as if my father wasn't there. It is not their fault, but it broke my heart and felt my dad was slowly robbed of his dignity around medical professionals due to the illness itself. Agape was different from the rest. Susan and Mei both made conversations with my father like familiar friends, asked him questions, and when he was able, had him sign forms. If he can do it himself, why not do it? They built trust and confidence in my father, and he looked forward to their visits every week. Words cannot describe how much I appreciate the staff of Agape Home Health. Thank you!!

Our experience with Agape Home services went from good to disappointment. My mother was…read morehospitalized in January and discharged home with fluid overload in her lungs, edema and heart failure. She had a nurse coming to follow up with her and was on IV treatment at the beginning. She received therapy and was supposed to apply for her DME, walker and shower chair who never arrived. We waited 4 months and nothing. Nurse wouldn't know and that home health will follow up. I never received any single call. We obtain a prescription from mom's PCP after tireless waiting and got it in the same day at a pharmacy. After few months while we were at work, the nurse was still coming once a week and will constantly received all the organic veggies that my mom gave her. We have a garden and is her life and part of her daily routine for years. We didn't know about this until mom will complain to us that she is tired and that the nurse doesn't do much but talk to her about personal life and complained that she didn't have good stuff to eat and wouldn't cook. Seems more like taking advantage of her generosity! We understand the care for patient, but It's not professional from a nurse to receive gifts from her patients, even if the patients insist. Especially from seniors that have other disorders. I reported this to Jessica the administrator and apologized, but sent us another nurse who didn't have her stethoscope, blood pressure cuff or glucose check. Our family is very disappointed with the unprofessional services received by the nurses and the DME that we never got with their help. We will not recommend this home health to friends or family.

I'm hoping my experience is solely my own, however, this was unfortunate enough that I contacted…read morePatti and my doctor's assistant immediately about my experience, and I was told by both her and my doctor's office that I would receive a follow-up, and have not received it after 3 weeks. Most of my reviews are about healthcare because I believe that we have to look out for each other. So here are the things that went wrong 1) I was at Prive because my doctor has an interest in the facility. So my first problem is, I was promised I would be billed, then received a call on a Thursday, when my surgery was on a Tuesday morning, that I had to pay upfront. So, if you need to be billed, have it done at a hospital. 2) The aftercare takers are home health specialists. Which means, you don't have the same type of care or knowledge from most of the caretakers as you would from an RN at a hospital. One of the main problems is they didn't explain my medications, or proactively care by interpreting my needs (ice pack, water) 3) my first caretaker, I believe her name is Shelly, asked me how much pain medication I should have. Not how much pain, but asked me to tell her how many pills. The problem is I had no idea what dosage of my pain meds were, and more importantly, I'm not a doctor or nurse. 4) this same caretaker, told me, After I requested pain meds, water, ice packs, and help to the bathroom, but she forgot the ice pack and/or water, and I hadn't gone to the bathroom yet, so when I reminded her, she said "you need to ask for everything at once, I now have another patient". On her return, she repeated it. Because she made me feel so uncomfortable, I asked my father to help me get out of bed (I had spine surgery) to go to the bathroom, asked my father to keep those leg massaging things unplugged (because my hands were too weak too plug and unplug). 5) she left, and the light of stay Debra came to my aid. She brought chocolate to me and took very good care of me. 6( however, the weirdest thing to happen was while I was all doped up at 5:30 am, Joan told me about a skin cream they had at the office. I told her I didn't have money but it sounded great. She got my chart, asked if my email on the chart was my correct email, and then emailed MULTI LEVEL MARKETING videos, not a cream that the office sells. 7) when I called Joan from my room to get ibuprofen, she said I didn't have any. I told her I did, because I already had it. She said, without putting me on hold, that she didn't see it. I said well I have a prescription I brought with me, but didn't know if it would be okay if I took it. She said get your own. To recap: Alright, the pluses: there is free candy, yummy food from Kreation, a gorgeous room, and Debra. Give her a raise. The negatives are if you have a major surgery like two artificial discs and shaving down bones in your neck, at least in my unfortunate experience, they are not capable of caring for you properly. So, I advise you to stay in a hospital after this type of surgery.

All hospice agencies are NOT the same. My mom's doctor referred us to an agency when Mom's health…read morewent into a steep decline, and we signed up. I wasn't thrilled with them, but I had nothing to compare them to and in fact didn't even know that I could switch to a different provider. After a short time, the director of Mom's assisted living took me aside. We were having a lot of trouble getting phone calls returned, medications delivered, RNs to show up on the right day at the right time and so forth - just a generally frustrating experience. The director recommended that we switch to Procare, and I took her advice - she deals with hospice every day and knows who is good and who isn't. We switched to Procare that day, and the difference was huge and immediate. Procare had someone there within an hour. Some of the things that Procare provided that the other hospice did not included: -Great communication, both on the phone and in person. -Very fast response when there was a crisis - no more waiting for hours while Mom was in pain or agitated. There is no excuse for that! The other agency failed to deliver the medications for two days after the doctor prescribed, and then sent the wrong one. No such problems with Procare. -24 hour care at the very end when Mom could not be left alone (the other hospice would not do this, I asked). -"Yes, we will find a way" was the answer to everything we needed. This is so much better than "No, the law/the agency/the doctor/the whatever doesn't allow that". Of course there are rules, and they're there for a reason, but the mindset at Procare is that we will do everything in our power to help as opposed to looking for an excuse to do as little as possible. The nurses are the best ever. Jennifer is fantastic at what she does, extremely adept at both patient care and care of the anxious and upset family. When we had questions, or if medications needed to be changed, Jennifer would call the doctor immediately, and he actually answered the phone - no messages, no "I'll get back to you", none of that. Things were handled on the spot. THAT is caring, and I can't thank Procare enough.

These folks took spectacular care of my Dad. They were kind, patient, knowledgeable. They didn't…read morejust drop by, take his stats and leave. They sat with him and talked to him for a half hour, forty-five minutes about whatever came to his mind BEFORE they began to talk to him about his health (look for Laurie. They're all great, but you can't do better than Laurie). It helped with my dad because he trusted the medical people so little, but it's easier to have someone you're already kind of friendly with to start taking your stats. We became very attached to them. When someone is taking care of your loved one, it helps to have that sense of attachment and bonding. It makes it easier to trust them, which is why it's nurtured, I'm sure. My dad didn't like to take pills. Was very suspicious of them, but ProCare worked with me so that the Xanax he wouldn't ordinarily have taken because 'blood sugar meds' or whatever we had to say to get the medication in him. The doctor was always easy to reach, and med adjustments were instant. A lot of agencies tend to treat caretakers like pesky annoyances to be swatted out of their way so the REAL MEDICAL GODS can step in and save the day. But with ProCare, my concerns and ideas were taken very seriously, if I said something wasn't going to work, they never questioned me, just did what was best for my dad. They didn't treat my suffering father like a junkie looking for a fix, as so many doctors do. If he or I said he was in pain, they gave him pain meds. Any medications related to the hospice diagnosis, supplies or devices we needed, ProCare arranged at no cost to us. They (the nurses, LVNs, social workers, doctors, whoever) usually came two or three times a week to check on him, but an on-call nurse was never hard to find and usually there within an hour. When the end was near, they were here every single day, and three times a week, they arranged for people to come in and take care of him for a few hours so I could sleep. When my father passed away, they handled everything. We had washed his body and dressed him in his favorite clothes by the times they got there, so they didn't need to help us with that, but they would have. They called the funeral home and had them come out to get him while we sat with him and tried to take in what was happening. A very sweet chaplain named Vincent was there to try to help us with the shock, and he wasn't preachy at all (for those of you who hate preachy). Made me wish he had a church of his own. You really can't get a better team of people for your loved one. The one snag involves me, and I didn't take a star away for this because they were there to take care of my dad, not me. My one caveat is not to expect any support from them once your loved one passes. It's been almost two weeks, and I haven't had a call or visit from anyone. It's hard, because you get attached and it would have been nice to talk to the people who knew him so well at the end, who worked so closely with you, who were in cahoots with you for the care of your loved one. But they don't get attached to you, so don't expect post-death support. And I know why they have to distance themselves- if they stay close to every family they care for, they'd be drowning in contacts. And they have to be available to care for the patients they can still help. I get that. Still, have a separate support system in place if you can, because ProCare can't be that for you.
