Mike and Jeff were the only outfit that was willing to make the trip up to get this done. It's bad, folks. Even Yelp doesn't recommend hardly any Milwaukee companies because they frankly don't want the business. They want to make friends. And they're sensitive. It's infuriating. Because as long as I get what I want and the service is upper level, I'm perfectly willing to pay...but I want what I want. With Excel, that's what you get. Mike was clear: if he comes up, he has to charge for the trip. And that's fine. Transparency is key. It's not a problem as long as you're upfront about it. Upon arrival he had options ready to choose from, and I'm not new to tinting overall, but I wanted a specific look both in and out. Both of the sample cards looked really nice, but the Llumar seemed better suited for the future exterior appearance. Didn't take too long before I had all windows fully tinted (see photos) and they cleaned up 99.9% of what was left (just a bit of water, no big deal). I advised them, once I can find a non-sensitive vendor to replace the rest of the windows I'd be more than delighted to have them back to tint those with the same Llumar. It was refreshing to work with a company that actually WANTS business and is willing to do quality work after so many frustrating encounters with Wisconsin companies. Meanwhile...just some notes. I can't stress enough: reflective film completely changes the look of the windows. Even high-end windows don't look 100% if they don't have reflective. You do need to be mindful about how it changes interior lighting, and plan accordingly. Some people are a bit shell-shocked at the decrease in natural light; that's the tradeoff for privacy (which was my primary goal). At night, you still get a measure of privacy, because unless you've got full-blast lighting inside and white walls, it's dim looking in and you can't really make out full details. So you can even control nighttime privacy by going with more earthy colors on the walls so that light refraction is minimized. Drapes are when you want to maximize privacy, obviously. But now you only need to draw them at night vs. using them to block natural light.

I had a little bit of sticker shock from the first quote so decided this would be worth getting multiple quotes on. And Home Build was one of them due to their stellar Yelp reviews. I called them and they were able to send Oscar out right away. They told me to save 60 -90 min for the consultation, which seemed like a lot of time considering every other company just needed 5-10 min of my time. However, i was willing to invest the time for the right doors and right price. Oscar and i met for over an hour. He was super friendly and knowledgeable about all my door options. He brought along a presentation (via his ipad), as well as materials so we got it all done within that hour. The other companies took a lot less, but resulted in a few trips to my house and lots of back and forth via email. I honestly probably prefer the latter since less time all at once. In the end I went with a different company due to price, but thought this company offered a good product at competitive pricing so would be worth looking into them.

I have an old Chicago house that's probably about 110 years old…read more I used Chicago Window & Door Solutions to replace wood windows from the 1960s that had stopped working and several vinyl windows (8 years old) that had started to fall apart. I was really mad about the vinyl windows because the former owner had installed them pretty new, but they literally were about to fall out of the wall. We had to lock them to keep them in place. The previous owner had the original windows replaced, but the installer of the vinyl windows did not insulate around the frame and cold air kept leaking in. The wood windows would rattle on a windy day. I found out about Chicago Window & Door Solutions through a recommendation from another contractor who was repairing my original wood windows - he said he wouldn't work with anyone else - so that tells you something! Sue & Greg came out to meet with us, took measurements and talked about our options. They install Marvin windows. Know that they aren't the cheapest option. For that you can go anywhere, but know in about 8 years, you're going to be replacing them. But I found that they listened to what we were looking for - which for me was energy efficiency as a top priority. I liked that there was the chance to get a wooden interior on the windows. It allowed us to match the stain on sill and border opening - so now these windows look like they belong and do not look like replacements. We opted to stain the windows ourselves and they gave suggestions of how to do it. More importantly, they came out twice (next day!) when we had questions/concerns. Justin came to do the install and he removed and installed six windows and fixed a sill in a day and a half - plus he cleaned up after himself! If you've ever had workmen come into your house, you know what a mess they can leave. I am really happy with the new windows. They are beautiful, they are much more energy efficient than what I had and really block out the noise. I live on a two-way street in Chicago & they have made the house much quieter than the windows I had before.
