Some specific notables for this gym? 1. The techniques are very.... technical, as they should be. Michael Proctor really does know the art. He knows how important the little details are and he instills that knowledge in our training every day. Also - a side note with Michael and his techniques: If Michael sees one person needing help on specific escapes, positions, or submissions, he will cater the class' curriculum for that person. He does this for everyone, not only his shining stars. 2. VERY CLEAN FACILITIES. Michael makes sure the mats are always clean. I wouldn't be surprised if he told me that he mops the mat multiple times after just one training session. He takes a lot of pride in the team's hygiene, emphasising the importance of handwashing, shoe-wearing, and gi-washing. 3. The energy in the room is always positive. It is not uncommon for the class to start off with a few jokes. Michael keeps it light and it makes a fun environment to train in. People feel like family when they come in because they are treated as family. I highly recommend this gym to anyone who has a bellybutton.

In 1 game I saw several injuries from kids slipping on wet spots, 2 in the middle of the court where the manager tried toweling off the court several time during the game, and 1 at the end of the court. One kid broke his wrist, another severely sprained an ankle, another kid slipped and did the splits, pulling his groin. In an earlier game a kid slipped and hit his head on the gym wall causing a concussion. I realize good wood floors are expensive, but this is more dangerous than just having concrete.

I had a wonderful experience with her personal training sessions. She is down to earth and unlike any other fitness coach I have met. She was realistic, organized, punctual, readily available, encouraging, flexible, and informative. Amanda knows her stuff. There were times in the beginning, when I started eating the way she suggested and I started freaking out feeling like it was unmanageable but she would talk me through it and I came through the experience with a much better understanding of food. I finally, after 44 years, feel at peace with food without tracking and counting calories. No longer do I obsess over certain foods. Amanda teaches you what your body needs (and it isn't cutting entire food groups out). She taught me awesome weight lifting exercises and body strength exercises too. What she taught me I can use at home or any gym. She didn't lead me on trying to hook me into buying more sessions - she simply taught, gave me copies of what she taught, and moved on to the next session. She explained a lot about stretching, taking care of your body after workouts, and more. Amanda delivered everything promised and more. I walked away with a new understanding of how to fuel my body, without going hungry, and what the best workouts are. She kicked my butt in the gym but was encouraging the entire time - she made me want to push myself but not in a mean way. Her gym is awesome - everything you need to get fit. I can't say enough good things about Amanda. I would highly recommend her. She is very personable and friendly yet professional. Definitely a good personal trainer for any age or gender. She knows her stuff and will get you in shape if you listen to her and work hard. I am down several lbs, clothes are looser, feeling good about myself, getting strong, and no longer obsessing over counting calories or the latest fad diet. Preparation: She had everything I would need (disposable undies, hair net, scrunchies!) and her setup was beautiful and professional. Ambience: She plays music if you like and it's of your choice. In addition to celebrating just showing up, Marcus has also celebrated my sobriety with me... When he sees me, he asked me "how many days?" and at first I thought he was talking about my workouts, but then I realized he remembered that I had gotten sober and he was Checking in with me for encouragement. This is not just a gym... It's a little bit of family. They all want to see you succeed. It's not the least expensive option, in fact it's not even close to it... But it's worth every penny. I started with OrangeTheory Fitness (OTF) Tacoma, before the University Place branch studio opened, and my husband joined UP OTF as a new grand-opening-member. We used to go to the 5am classes together until Covid shut everything down. UP OTF kept calling me on the phone to rejoin, and after many bad-habits (overeating, drinking, late-night snacking, lack of exercise, binge-watching and sedentary-habits) formed and I was embarrassed of my weight-gain, I rejoined OTF UP last May. The thing I love about Orangetheory is, you really don't need to think: just show up! The coaches take over and when you leave, you'll be a sweaty mess! I can never get THAT good of a workout (burning 500 calories) on my own at a gym in under an hour (50 mins) in comparison. So, I've been showing-up, and guess what happened? My inner-athlete came out! My old-college-athlete, buried deep within my now post-50-year-old body, came out. My desire to improve and change took over. It was buried DEEP within me, under those layers of extra 35 pounds I'd gained post-COVID, plus another 20 pounds post college, but it became awakened! Orangetheory Fitness says, if you show up with the desire to change, you will burn 500 calories every class! I also joined Noom, an app on my phone to track and teach me about my dietary habits, as I knew I wanted to improve my nutrition habits. The combination of eating healthy + OTF, in the past 9 months I've successfully lost 37 pounds! And I'm stronger and healthier! I love the coaches encouragement and the music, at OTF. What they do is research evidence-based, so they will call you out by your name! They will push you to use heavier weights or run harder and faster. I needed that! I needed the push from people who care to help get me across my finish line of personal goals. I wasn't able to lose the weight on my own: I'd tried for years! I didn't stop exercising during Covid, but walking my dog isn't the same as being told to lift heavy weights. And when was the last time I'd chosen to run hard on a treadmill at another gym? I never chose the treadmill! And I would never get on a rower for 20 minutes! But at OTF I do! It's that herd-mentality of if the entire group is doing it, I will too! And at OTF I do what I'm told, and I love the results!
