Easily one of the best customer service experiences I've had in quite a long while. I had not been properly fit for running shoes in years and so I decided to drop in here while in town from Minneapolis last month. Tom helped me out and I really felt taken care of. Measured, put on a treadmill to see my steps and then recommended a larger size than I had ever bought. He told me I needed to accommodate the larger of my two feet more than my sizing had in the past. He brought out about 4 different pairs/brands and I tested them all out on the indoor track. Eventually we settled on a pair of Saucony. This was a brand I had never bought before and so I was hesitant. But I'm now a month into running with them and they're easily the best running shoes I've ever owned. Price was pretty standard at 150 or so but they're totally worth it. Will be back when visiting my family in Milwaukee. That's how much I loved the store. read more

I always like coming here for shoes and assistance when I'm looking for a refresher about my gait. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, as well as being able to assist with trying a variety of shoes. I like how you individually work with a staff member to assess, try on, and explore different shoe types. They will also go out of their way to look up additional colors, sizes, etc. both online and stores nearby. Went in on a Saturday afternoon to buy new running shoes, and the place was super busy! After a bit of a wait, I was attended to by a very helpful sales person who had me show him my walk and do a short run on a treadmill, which was recorded for analysis. After learning more about why I was there and what I was looking for, he gave me four different shoes to try on. He was very knowledgeable and honest about each brand, without pressure or bias. The Brookfield PRO location was highly recommended to me by a couple of friends, but the Shorewood one is right in my neighborhood. Kellie helped get me set up by asking a few questions about my running habits and finding my size in a neutral shoe. I took a lap on the track inside the store (a treadmill was also an option) so she could take a video for analysis of how I jog. This helped her choose some stability style shoes for me to try out and test on the track. This company has a shoe fitting process that is such an insightful, in-depth, and articulate experience. I walked in 99% sure I knew what shoe I was going to purchase; an hour later, I narrowed it down to three pairs of trail running shoes. Staff gives you personal and experienced suggestions. They ask you all kind of questions and facts that deal with the weight of the shoe, grip, arch support, material, technology used with each shoe, heel to toe drop, and suggestions. This location has a treadmill used to see your running technique, and a small walkway to test the shoes. They have sample running socks, if you forget yours. Performance Running Outfitters is my go to place for running gear. For the past couple years, the "Easter Bunny" brought new shoes. If you ask me, I would choose that over candy any day! The staff is always helpful and offers suggestions based on how you use the products. They have an indoor track to give them a test run, as well as a treadmill where they can video how you run and assess if another shoe may work better for your style. They also have a great selection of athletic clothing, sports watches, socks, shoe inserts and accessories. My favorite running socks are also from Performance Running and I am sure one of these days I will stop dreaming about a watch and make that happen too. Sign up at the register and receive in store credit after reaching a reward level on purchases. I am also happy that Performance Running partners with my employer, so I receive another 10% off everyday! Performance Running is also very visible in the community. They are often pickup points or sponsors for local runs and also organize groups for beginners to pros, and everywhere in between. After having had a painful/strange experience at the gym, I was looking to trouble shoot. So, I figured that I'd start with the easiest and most likely thing first. Although I do have two pairs of gym shoes that I alternate each day, I've had them for about 2 or 3 years. Yeah, I know, all of you running buffs are probably thinking that I am lucky that I've only recently started to feel the effects of waaayyyy too old shoes. So, I started researching and found this place. The website stated that you get a thorough assessment of your feet and your gait so that the salesperson can suggest the best shoes for your feet. As I looked further at the website, I thought that I was going to have to go to Brookfield, which would not have been a problem at all. However, I was thrilled to find that there was a location in Shorewood, which is much closer. When I walked in, I was greeted right away. The salesperson asked me if I knew what I was looking for, and I told her that I needed new running shoes but have never been assessed to find the perfect shoe. So, she had me take my shoes off and roll my pants up. She had me just stand, and then squat, and then stand on one foot and squat. Then she sized my foot. Once she got a good idea of what type of shoe I would need, she brought a pair out and had me get on the treadmill. I jogged/ran for a minute or two while the floor level camera recorded my feet/legs running. Then we watched the recording and she assessed my gait and the stability of my feet in the shoes. I ended up buying two pairs of shoes, as I always do. I like to switch each day. It was a great experience. Although, I must say that I felt like a doofus when I was asked to stand on one foot and squat because I was swaying like a drunk person and almost fell. And watching a recording of my legs/feet running was a bit embarrassing because I've watched myself run in the mirror and it is not pretty! My left leg looks like it belongs to a different person than my right. Also, I'm not a big fan of shopping, in fact, I hate it with a passion. So, it was great to be told what I needed and not have to look for it. When I am in the market for a new pair, or two, of running shoes, I will return to this place. I guess that I'm supposed to get new ones about every 6 months (I've read every 300-500 miles in some sources). read more

Confession...I've run in more 5, 10, 15 k marathons than I can remember. But the fancy shoes and gear always intimidate me. I always take a sort of granola-y free spirit approach to running (this may explain why my right knee is killing me as I write this....anyhow...) I'll usually pick up whatever Nike is on sale at kohls, never going out of my way to have THEE perfect gear and footwear But I had to pick up a 5k race packet here and stopped to investigate footwear after I found a $10 off coupon in my bag. First off, the staff was really really helpful and not at all judgmental of my torn up asics with Dr. Scholls heel cups. I asked loads of annoying questions ("if i have a big foot and want support which shoe would you pick?" "But I still like it flexible" "ooh, you don't have this in a 10 1/2 in the aqua and pink?" "Why do I feel like im falling backwards in these ones?") Maaaan, I would've cut me off after the second shoe but they were patient and knowledgeable throughout the process. Some tips: --I was worried it would be wildly expensive but shoes I looked at were pretty reasonable ranging from $68 on clearance to $140. --they will do a full foot assessment (they have a treadmill and video camera and some sort of way to determine your ideal shoe.) I didn't feel like going through the whole deal but they did offer. --they have a track you can try shoes out on. --they sell everything you need from socks to gel packs to sprinting track shoes with spikes in the soles to slick looking clothes to those "runner girl" bumper stickers --loyalty program! For every $250 you spend, (they take your name and keep track) you get $25 gift card. I found a pair of saucony's that seemed good to go from the start (no "breaking in" period with blisters or aching feet after the first wear). Found this store when researching minimalist / zero-drop running shoes for people with wide feet. The store was easy to find, the people were very nice and helpful. They were equipped with the proper technology to ensure that the shoes fit correctly. A treadmill and pseudo-running track was available to test out the shoes. They had lots of brands for "normal" feet (Newton, Nike, Merrell, Brooks, Five Fingers, etc.), and I was happy to find their selection of wide shoes accommodating. I chose the Altra Instinct 1.5, and hope that it meets my expectations. I would definitely visit this store again, as their prices are in line with other stores, the selection is great, and the people are friendly and helpful. Update: The Altra Instinct 1.5s are quite nice, and yet still similar in desired capabilities/features to the VFFs. read more

My physical therapist first sent me to Performance Running Outfitters in Brookfield around 5 years ago. I've been a loyal customer ever since! They put you on a treadmill and analyze your gait, which leads you to a fantastically fitting shoe. They have a solid selection and will happily order a size for you, in case there are other people with awkwardly large feet like myself. I've run 6 half marathons in shoes that I've purchased from here, which is a lot of shoes. They also have a great rewards/loyalty program. I buy tons of running apparel and gear from here because they carry a broad selection. This is definitely a store of running experts, but they were great when I've brought my non-running family and friends in. Got decent customer service so far. Their inventory for running shoes are not as large as you would expect from a specialty type of store. The prices are relatively high. But over all my experience was ok. I felt that the staff are not really as expert as they should be however. I don't know yet how they would work with their alleged return policy. In general I would probably go back to shop here. On second visit I had a better experience. They accepted the return with no issues and I was helped by a better experienced employee. read more

I had never been to a shop with the extensive knowledge and techniques they use for fitting people in running shoes. I don't remember the reps name but she had me walk ten paces and then back so she could get an idea of my stride and then she checked out the wear on the bottom of my current shoes. She brought out five pairs of shoes to try on and after finding a pair that incredible and unlike any other shoe I'd ever worn. I then went on the treadmill they have set up with a cam corner to record my running stride just to make sure the shoes were hitting the ground properly. The shoes were right in my price range and I couldn't be happier with how they feel. The staff even helped me find a few races I didn't know about for this year. For the serious and not-so-serious runners - I heard about Performance from a friend who was marathon training in 2012. When I decided to get back into running shape and actually get fitted for a pair of kicks, she recommended I check out this place. I wasn't sure how this whole "fitting" process would work - I'm sure everyone has seen those measuring plates at shoe stores that no one uses. This is far from it. I was definitely impressed even after my first time when Performance took an ample amount of time to make sure I got fitted properly - they'll start you off by watching you walk and checking to see which way your knees bend. Then, they'll bring out 3 or 4 different pairs/brands of shoes for your try. Once you've found a pair that are comfortable, they'll video record your running gate as your run on a tread mill, then explain how the shoes are helping you run. Oh! I should mention - getting fitted is all free! It's soooo cool! I've had the opportunity to go back twice since the beginning of the year and each experience I've had with their sales team has been extremely positive. They're all very knowledgeable and well versed about their business! Definitely check them out if you're in the market to take up running or get fitted for some new running shoes! read more

I bought my 2nd or 3rd pair of running shoes here and after a couple runs decided I wasn't a huge fan of them. They let you return them within 30 days even if they've been worn a few times and you get store credit, so I was able to just order the same style that I'd had for my last pair of shoes. read more

They are so helpful here. I bought shoes in February and my boyfriend on Friday. Both times they have been great. If you're a new runner, I suggest checking it out because you will get a free running "analysis" and they can suggest shoes for you to try. Yes, running shoes are expensive, but I have had no problems with my shoes or hip/leg/knee pain as I have in the past. The only complaint I have is that I purchased Zulu no show socks and the elastic lost its stretch after 2 wears. I'm super disappointed for $15, I wish I'd been able to wear them more. I did contact Balega and the President wrote to me. My disappointment resulted in replacement socks, but the wrong cut. I'll wear them with pants, although, I wish they'd sent the proper cut. I truly don't like these. Not PRO's fault, but the socks were not returnable to PRO. Bummer. read more

I've once driven by this Small Gem sometime in the past, and noticed it thinking "Oh, how nice. A store for runners". However, when I actually walked in, I was greeted by fellow runners of a professional caliber. I've told them that I'm in the market for a new pair of running shoes for general training. The Gentleman (I forget his name) evaluated the motions of my feet and told me that I needed a lot of arch support. He sampled three pairs of shoes and let me test them out each on their treadmill, The camera in the back is for further evaluation of the running motion. I could tell that The Gentleman was highly knowledgeable in running, and was heavily reliant on his professional opinion based on his experiences. Anyways, one of the pairs of shoes was a pair of Nike's. I've always been partial to that particular brand and bought them on the spot. I was pleased at the level of service that I didn't even care about the 10% Military Discount that was available. I didn't even know about it until he mentioned it. Regardless, I'll be going there again for my running needs. read more

As a newer runner, I appreciate that the staff is willing to spend time with you to get fitted for an appropriate pair of running shoes, whether that means jogging on the treadmill, running the track along the wall, or bringing out several pairs of shoes in your size. The staff is super friendly and laidback, often sharing good insights into local races or events they're training for themselves. They don't even judge you when you say, "This shoe feels good... but do you have any that look cuter?" Doesn't matter which Performance Running Outfitters you go to, everyone at all of the stores knows an unhealthy amount of information about shoes. They can tell you the heel drop or the amount each shoe weighs to the very ounce on almost every shoe without looking it up. They will sit through you trying on ten pairs of shoes and watch you run in each of them. They will make sure that the shoes fit your running style and also give you suggestions when weighing pros and cons. The only knock on this place is that it can get a bit pricey. But, you get what you pay for. read more

Walking to the back of the store to pick up my race packet, I had 2 different employees offer me help, and 1 on the way back through.
